W. 2 Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE 3 Parti the article in question to he thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the pay rent must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15j. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense i - r engraving on woo C> Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature cf an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to he inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may he. 7. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property tobe inserted iu the POLICW GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once trammt to tie Editor notice of the fact, referring to the num'ier of the announcement for insertion la the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, mil be wholly responsible for any proceedings whiih ma / result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday isiue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noonon Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition notlaterthan Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one tide of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. ' 12. A jeweller and traveller. Property sup- posed disposed of at Liverpool, Birkenhead, and Manchester. Warrant issued. W. whoie apsrehension is sought for misappropriating £ 1,250— Age 36, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ID., rather stoat THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identifica- tion by the Metropolitan Police the Photo- graphs and descriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from Bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door ; stealing bale of silk ; van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. Information to the Ch: cf Constable of Devonshire, Exeter. £ 5 REWARD. 7.— Exeter ( City). — Portrait and description of HARRY PEARSE, alias URIAH PEARSE, - and HARRY TAYLOR, whose apprehension is sought for obtaining goods by fraud :— Age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., rather stout build, complexion ruddy, full face, hair dark browD, side whiskers and heavy moustache, turns his feet outwards, awk- ward gait, very talkative, fond of drink and low company; dress, when last seen, light overcoat, new suit, black hard felt hat; carried a mackintosh and brown leather Gladstone bag. A builder's foreman; native of Woodbnry, Davon. Was at one time employed at Sileby Workhouse, Yorkshire. Left Exeter, 24th Oct., by 10.35 a. m. train, London and South- Western Railway, for Waterloo. May be accompanied by a woman, age about 23, tall and slight. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the Unitel Kingdom. The above reward will be paid by Mr. C. G in., complexion dark, hair daik brown ( turning grey), eyes brown, sear left back of head, bridgo of nose, right cheek, right bae'e of neck ( burn), scar front of left shin, left lower cdf, and 2 right instep, crossed flags, cross and other indistinct marks on right forearm, ring on left middle finger. Sentenced at Essex Quarter Sessions, 31st October, 1891, to 5 years penal servitude for larceny. Licjnsed 4: li Novem- ber, 1895. R 260. 10— Colchester ( County).— For falsifying a book, belonging to his employers, at Harwich, durirg September and October last — JOHN TAYLOR, ago about 45, height about 5 ft. 2 in., hair and mcustacho dark brown ( turning grey), eyes dark, rather round - shouldered ; dress ( sup- posed) long black overcoat, dark trousara, black hard felt hat. Ackers, Colchester 11.— Colchester ( Borough).— For obtaining, 25th nit., £ 5 by means of a fictitious cheque on London and County Bank— GEORGE JAMES, age about 51, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, right eyelid drops slightly as if from weakness and shows a redness. Supposed to frequent race- courtes. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Coombs, Col- chester. FORFARSHIRE. 12.— Dundee ( City).— Portrait and description of Expiree ROBERT HUNTER, alias HUTCHIN- SON, and JOHN M'CALLUM, Office No. 31035, whose apprehension is sought on suspicion of attempted safe- breaking, between 30th ult. and 1st inst.:— Age 49, height 5 ft. 5£ in., complexion fre3h, hair ( bald on top) brown, eyes grey, long face, high cheekbones, scar on right, and on both eye- brows, 3 scars left temple, " C. S." inside left fore- arm, speaks with English accent; dress, heavy navy- blue overcoat, dark trousers, high crowned black felt hat. A shoemaker. Sentenced at Glasgow, 22nd August, 1882, to 5 years penal servitude for theft. Reg. No. XI. 159, and Scotch Criminal Register, 457/ 93. He is supposed to have been assisted by A MAN ( supposed WM. KENNEDY), age about 30, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, full face, fair moustache, speaks with English accent; wore an overcoat and tweed cap or felt hat. The thieves left Dundee, 1st inst., by the 7.15 a. m. North British train for the south, one of them carry- ing a brown leather handba?. They left behind a set of burglar's instruments, 1 black leather handbag, 1 black glazed ditto, 1 dark lantern, an umbrella with straight white whin handle, a piece of seshline, a piece of sheet lead, and portions of the " Scotsman " and Edinburgh Evening Despatch " of 29th ulfc. Hunter is also wanted at Greenock for being con- cerned with two men in custody for shopbreaking. Information to Chief Constable Djwar, Dundee. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 13.— Gloucester ( County).— For steaiug about £ 3 in bronze, in packets of 5s. each — JOHN DARTERS, age 22, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair ( curled in front) light brown, eyes blue, slight impediment in speech, native cf Gloucester; dress, brown cloth jacket, corduroy trcuseM, brown cap, lace boots. Has served in the North Gloucester Militia; gets liis living by loitering at stations, carry ing parcels, & c. Is also wanted on a commit- ment warrant for assault. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Philpott, Gloucester. HAMPSHIRE. 14.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For larceny— WILLIAM HULL, alias BREWER, age 37, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion sallow, hair very dark, heavy moustache dark, eye3 dark brown; dress, check tweed lounge coat, dirty brown corduroy trousers, skull cap. May seek work at breweries or docks, and may be found at common lodging house?. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. 15. — Southampton ( Borough). — For in- decently assaulting a male person— MORTIMER HOCOMBE, alias ALEXANDER, and MOR- TIMER, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion pale, hair ( cut slioit) dark ( turning- grey), clean shaved, good teeth ( supposed false), stoops slightly ; clerical appearance. In conversa- he invariably precede? liis remark with " Don't you see?"; dress, black Chesterfield coat, black trousers, high silk hat, black band, wore gold- rimmed pince- nez and a gold double chain. Stated he was a theatrical agent for Alexander's Pantomime Company. Sup- posed identical with REDFERN ALPHONSE, alias HAWKE BRIAN, & c., a notorious theatrical swindler, who was sentenced to 12 months imprison- ment at Manchester, in 1893, and to 10 months at North London Sessions, in 1894, for a series of theatrical frauds. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Berry, South- ampton. 16. — Portsmouth ( Borough). — WILLIAM LEICESTER., alias IVORY, and ELIZABETH WARREN, alias IVORY, CASE No. 23, 21st June last, not to be arrested. Reynolds, Hitchin. 18. — Bishop Stortford ( County). — For stealing, 3rd inst., a dark bay gelding pony, 13 hands, piebald on rump, spotted all over body, recently clipped, hog mane, short tail, in good cotsaition, tosses its head when trotting; a light gig, painted dark, picked out green ; fawn- coloured cushions ; 1 fawn, 1 brown rug ; and a set of silver- plated harness— TWO MEN: 1st, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 7 cr 8 in , complexion fresh, hair, mous- taphe, and eyes dark; dress, dark Chesterfield over- coat, pepper- and- salt vest and trousers. 2nd, age about 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion fresh, light moustache; wore a cap, white collar, brown tie, lace boots. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Duke, Bishop Stortford. KENT. 19.— Chatham ( County). — For stealing, 27th nit., 2 gold keeper rings ( Mizpah on one) ; 1 silver watch and chain; 1 jubilee half- crown brooch; 1 black cloth jacket, side pickets ; 1 pair black- and- white trousers — FREDERICK NEWNHAM, private of the East Kent Regiment, age 19, height 5' ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, hair light; wearing f. he stolen clothes. Has talked of going to London, and of joining tho American Army. Information to Snpt. Lacy, Chatham. LANCASHIRE. 20.— Chorley ( County)— For attempting to obtain goods by false pretences, 14th inst.— A WOMAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 2 in., com- p'cxion fre'h, full face, hair dark brown; dress, black drees, short black jacket, ^ cape ( black cloth one side, grey fur the other), imitation sealskin hat and black veil, carries a black satchel. She orders jackets, bonnets, & o., and, under pre'ence of li ivjng forgotten her purse, endeavours to take the goods with her, giving a false name and address, and promising to forward the money. : Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ncrris, Chorley. 21.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report — Liccnsa Holder ALEXANDER CAMERON, Offica No. 48822, age 36, height 6 ft., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scar under and over l$ ft eyebrow, broad nose, forehead projects, pro- portionate build, a blacksmith by trade ; native of Inverness. Sentenced at Lancaster Assizes, 26th February, 1890, to 10 years penal servitude for buggery. Licensed 16th October, 1595. Q 43. 22.— Liverpool ( City).— For embezzlement— GEORGE PALMER, age about 22, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion dark, hair black, clean shaved; dress, blue coat and vest, dark trousers, hard felt hat, appearance of a gentleman's servant. Supposed native of Bristol. May seek employment as a waiter at hotels or restaurants. Absconded 14th ult. Warrant issued. , Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. LINCOLNSHIRE. 23.— Boston ( County).— For obtaining a large quantity of potatoes by false pretences— WILLIAM FOSTER, alias BLAND, ago 33, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes hazel, several boil scars on forehead, 3 small moles left cheek; dress ( supposed), bine overcoat, velvet collar, dark check lining, grey suit, vest very low in front, light tie, brown leggings, black hard hat, light lace boots. A joiner, has been represent- ing himself as a commission agent and potato sales- man ; native of Holbeck, near Leeds. His wife and family reside at Hull. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Crawford, Boston. 24. — Spalding ( County). — For embezzling £ 15 from the National Provincial Bank — TOM RICHARD ELLSUM, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair, moustache and eide whiskers brown, eyes dark, works his shoulders up and down when walking, rather hollow back, turns his feet out, usnally weirs a brown knicker- bocker suit. A bank clerk; native of Spalding. Absconded 20th ult.; may endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 25.— Spalding ( County).— For fraudulent bank- ruptcy— ROBERT JAMES POCKLINGTON, age about 50, height 6 ft, stout build, complexion ruddy, hair, moustache and side whiskers dark brown, eye3 dark. Walks erect. A farmer, of Moul- ton, Austcndyke. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Osborn, Spaldirg. 26 — Boston ( Borough).— For deserting his wife and children, leaving them chargeable to the Boston Union — CHARLES LOUNDS, age 36, height about 6 ft., complex'on dark, hair dark brown, eyes ( small) grey, high cheekbones, Roman nose, scar on cheek, little finger disfigured at end, turns toes out when walking; dress, blue pilot coat, white moie- tl< in trousers, peak cap, lace boots. Sentenced at Edinburgh High Court, 12th Jane, 1893, to 3 years ponal servitude for housebreaking. Licensed 17th September, 1895. License Holder JAMES MUIRHEAD, alias PETER SMITH, and SCOTCH JAMIE, Office No. 48736, age 42, height 5 ft. 5 in., fresh com- plexion, hair light brown ( nearly bald), eyes blue, pock- pitted, several pockmarks on nose, hairy mole back of left forearm, 3 ditto below elbow joint, small blue dot behind cleft of right thumb and forefinger, superficial scar outside upper left thigli, 2 hairy moles 3 inches below right eye, 2 port wine stains on left chest ( 2 inches below inner enu of collarbone). Sentenced at Edinburgh High Court, 16th March, 1893, to 3 years ( and remanet of 45 days of former sentence) penal servitude and 5 years police supervision for fraud, and wilful imposi- tion, & c.
