All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE TIUITOK OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought trill be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15 » . per portrait, and of Is. ( id. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must he signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concemiio stolen property must be guaranteed by an "{ peer of not less rank than Inspector, or n » a1nnnv* therein 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and at alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted iu the POLICB GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transin t to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion IJ> the next isne. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, KiU be wholly responsible for any proceedings whi, h mat, t result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noonon Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not laterthau Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, aud accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Xew Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond $ Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OP PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identifica- tion by the Metropolitan Police the Photo- graphs and descriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from Bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door ; stealing bale of silk ; van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1. — Criminal Investigation Depart- ment — Portrait and description of JOHN ARTtlUtt HAuES, wuose apprehension is sought for obtaining £ 6,137, by conspiracy and fraud— Age 45, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers, and moustache dark ( turning grey), rather large red nose; of slightly Jewish appear- ance ; is fond of drink and horse - racing; dress, generally shabby. A solicitor; native of London. Is supposed to have taken a cafe or tea gardens in Devonshire or Cornwall. See Case No. 2, 15th inst. Warrant is3ued. 2. — Criminal investigation Depart- ment.— For embezzlement— EDWIN PDRKISS, age 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, small round deep scar left cheek; well dressed. Supposed native of Bournemouth. Late in the employ of the Joint Stock Banking Company, Woodford, Essex. Has friends at Bournemouth and Bridgwater. Warrant issued. 3.— A Division.— For being concerned with William Stanley, alias Thomas Harris, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 j in., complexion fresh, pug nose, hair dark brown, eyes grey, several boil scars on body; dress, bluo melton overcoat, dark mixture jacket suit, black hard felt hat; respectable appearance. Native of Lambeth, who is committed for trial, at Central Criminal Court, 9th prox., for stealing, 9th inst., a dark giey gelding, age 4 years, 14 hands, cat- footed fore feet, lump on near fore leg - JOHN HARRIS, alias ALLEN, and ATHERTON, age 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, bair brown, moustacht giDger, pointed at ends, dress, blue melton coat, dark mixture suit, black hard felt hat; respectable appearance. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 4 — D Division.— For obtaining £ 3 3s, by^ means of a worthless cheque on the London and South Western Bank, Limited ( Fenchurch Street Branch), payable to G. F. Belcher, Esq., signed Wm. Morley & Co. — Supervisee TRJMAS THORNTON, uliHf U0H1," HL1, RT AGATES, JOHN HENRY WOOD C0ATE8, JOHN COATES, HARRY WATSON, DONALDSON, DAVISON, LOWTON, LOUTAB, and BEL- CHER, Office No. 44101, age 58, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair, moustache, and beard grey ( bald), eyes blue ( cast in left), slight build, pigeon- breasted, scar rt forearm, it shin, discoloured scars on breast, wart between shonlders, varicose veins left leg; dre.- s, black frock coat, dark tiousers, high silk hat, black kid gloves. Carried an umbrella; respectabie appearance. He orders goods, and tenders cheques for a larger amount and draws the change ; on the goods being sent the fraud is discovered. ( See Gazette, 5th July, 1895, Case No. 3, and 2nd August, 1895, Case No. 81.) Sentenced at Manchester, 11th March, 1887, to - 5 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision foi- fraud. Licensed 17th December, 1892. Warrant issued. 5. — N Division. — For embezzlement — FRANK KINDRED, age 20, height 5 ft. 3 in, complexion fresh, round face, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes snpposed grey ; dress, bine serge suit, black hard felt hat. A baker's assistant; native of Doverconrt. May be found at Birch, near Col- chester, or Dovercouit. 6— R Division. — Escaped from custody of Police, after being sentenced to 1 month's imprison- ment for felony— JOSEPH REED, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair brown, clean shaved ; dress, long dark tweed overcoat with cape, black vest and trousers, dark tweed cap, bine tie ( white spots), lace boots. Native of Croydon. 7.— T Division,— For disobedience of summons under the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894, Section 112— WILLIAM WILSON, alias GOOD- WIN, age 55, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, com- plexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark brown; military appearance; dress, bine serge suit, high silk hat. Wairant issued. 8.— V Division.— For non- payment of main- tenance arrears — JOHN FREDERICK SON- YILLE, late of Kingston- on- Thames, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark, eyes brown; respectable appearance. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1895 CITY OF LONDON. • 9.— For embezzlement — ALEXANDER REID, late of Morna- road, Camberwell, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light, slight Bide- whiskers ; dress, light brown suit, hard felt hat. A clerk. Warrant issued. 16.— For forgery— T. IRVING HAYTON, late of 48, Graham- road, Dalston, age about 28, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion sallow, hair ( cut close) light, slight moustache ginger ( stra ggling at ends); well dressed. A clerk. Absconded 9th inst. Warrant issued. 11. — For obtaining 4 horses by means of a fictitious cheque — JOHN H. SANDERS, age about 36, height 5 ft. 6 in., square shoulders, com- plexion fresh, hair brown; appearance of a horse dealer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. AYRSHIRE. 12.— Ayr ( County).— For fraud, in October last— J. MILLAR, alias T. KERRIGAN, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, stout build, hair, whiskers and moustache reddish, turning grey, chin shaved ; speaks with Irish accent; dress, grey tweed jacket suit, waterproof coat with cape, brown hard felt hat, strong lace boots ; wore a gold chain. A hawker. He hires a horse and trap and obtains board and lodging for five or six days, and absconds without paying for either. His goods and letters are usually addressed " T. Kerrigan, to be called for," at a railway station or post office. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Ayrshire, Ayr. BERKSHIRE. 13.— Reading ( Borough).— For obtaining, 10th inst., £ 80, by false pretences ( including 4 £ 10 Bank of England notes, Nos. 94775— 78, dated 22nd April, 1895, and 6 £ 5 Bank of England notes)— FREDERICK HOPE HIGGS, age 25, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion pale, long thin face, hair brown, small moustache black, eyes dark brown, tattooed on arms and left shoulder ; dress, dark blue serge suit, hard felt hat, and ( supposed) new patent leather boots. A house painter. Has served in the Royal Engineers, 20th Hussars, East Surrey Regi- ment, and the Berks Militia. Previously oonvicted at Reading, Oxford, and Devizes. Had in his possession a valuable English concertina, which he may be found playing at harmonic meetings held at public- houses. He obtained the money from a domestic servant, under promise of marriage, stating that he was a carpenter, employed at a furniture shop, and intended to go into business. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. DERBYSHIRE. 14.— Alfreton ( County).— For shop- breaking and stealing 2 pairs of boots, 1 pair men's blucher, size 8 ( one boot newly soled and heeled, the other heeled and nailed), the other pair recovered — CHARLEY LESTER, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, hair and moustache dark, has lost right forefinger at second joint; dress, dark coat, dark cord trousers ( much worn), red check neckerchief, dirty light cap. A tramping labourer; left Bakewell, 14th inst., stating he was going to Manchester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Eyre, Alfreton. DEVONSHIRE. 15.— Torrington ( County).— For burglary at Westward Ho, night of 13th inst., and stealing £ 24 10s. in gold, £ 1 10a. in silver, an overcoat, and a pair of lace- up boots.— Supervisee THOMAS GENT, Office No. 48914, age 34, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, 5 blue dots back of right hacd, T above right wrist, scar bridge of nose, and boil scar right hip; supposed dressed in dark brown plaid coat and vest, black- and- grey striped trousers, bowler hat, dark overcoat, lace- up boots with protectors in bottoms. Sentenced at Barnstaple, 17th October, 1895, to 14 days hard labour, and 4 years police supervision, for stealing an overcoat. 445. 16.— Torrington ( County).— For stealing at Abbotsham ( with another in custody) a quantity of lead pipe ( recovered)— ARTHUR JAMES, age 23, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes blue, may have a very slight moustache, rather round shouldered, has a habit of standing with his hands in trousers pockets and head inclined forward ; dress, dark suit ( small plaid), red socks, black felt hat and shoes. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Buchauan, Torrington. 17.— Exeter ( City).— Portrait and description of HARRY PEARSE, alias URIAH PEARSE, and HARRY TAYLOR, whose apprehension is sought for obtaining goods by fraud :— Age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in , rather stout build, complexion ruddy, full face, hair dark brown, side whiskers and heavy moustache, turns his feet outwards, awk- ward gait, very talkative, fond of drink and low company; dress, when last seen, light overcoat, new suit, black bard felt hat; carried a mackintosh and brown leather Gladstone bag. A builder's foreman ; native of Woodbury, Devon. Was at one timo employed at Sileby Workhouse, Yorkshire. Left Exeter, 24th ult., by 10.35 a. m. train, London and South- Western Railway, for Waterloo. May be accompanied by a woman age about 23, tall and slight. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Exeter. DURHAM. 18.— Bishop Auckland ( County).— For steal- ing, 30th ult., a cornet ( resovered).— THOMAS SNOWDON PRICE, late of Shildon, age 29, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fair, hair and slight moustache light, tattooed ship in full sail on chest, chain on wrist, ring on finger, woman, bird and heart pierced by arrow on arm; dress, black jacket and vest, dark striped trousers, dark cloth cap, lace boots, may be wearing a rough blue cloth overcoat ( stolen) ; a coal miner. He pledged the cornet at Newcastle- on- Tyne, and sold the pawn- ticket at Immerwick, near Dunbar, on 8th inst. Is supposed to be tramping the country playing a tin whistle. Is a good musician, and will apply to band- masters for relief or employment. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Banks, Bishop Auckland. ESSEX. 19. — Saffron Walden ( County). — For ob- taining, 14th inst., £ 6 13s. 9d., by means of a fictitious cheque on the London and County Bank, Westminster Branch— ALFRED NEWTON ( sup- posed false), age about 45, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion, hair, moustache, short beard, and eyes dark, thin features; dress, dark coat, cardigan jacket, dark trousers and cap. Is accompanied by a man, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., clean shaved; shabbily dressed. Identical with man described in Cases Nos. 25, 27, 28, 30, 47, 43, 49, 50, 17th May last, Nos. 18 and 21, 20th September, and No. 24, 15th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Prjke, Saffron Walden. FORFARSHIRE. 20. — Brechin ( Borough). — Portrait an i de- scription of WILLIAM TOSH, whose apprehension is sought for embezzling abont £ 300— Age about 50, height about 5 ft. 7 in., very corpulent, complexion fresh, hair light or sandy ( turninggrey), whiskers and moustache cut short; dress, - when last seen, dark grey jacket suit, zig- zag pattern, light overcoat, dark felt hat, and boots. A cloth inspector ; native of Dundee. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Smart, Brechin. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 21. — Gloucester ( County). — For stealing a gentleman's silver geneva watch, No. 21956 — SINCLAIR, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion freckled, hair light, moustache sandy, eyes blue ; dress, grey check suit and cap, turned- down collar. He took lodgings 16th inst., stating he was a stonemason, just arrived from Hereford, and was now employed by a firm in Gloucester. 22. — Gloucester ( County).— For stealing 2 gentlemen's silver geneva watches, and 2 curb- pattern silver alberts— FRASER, age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair, slight moustache, and eyes dark ; dress, short black jacket, dark brown guernsey, dark cord trousers, blue muffler, fireman's blue cap, patent leather peak, rather heavy nailed boots. This man took lodgings, 19th inst., stated he was a carpenter, and just arrived from Portsmouth, to work for a firm in Gloucester. 23.— Gloucester ( County).— For stealing, 6th inst., a lady's brown silk umbrella, grey horn handle, horse- shoe shape, with silver plated band 1 pair ladv's lace boots, size 3 ; a black dressing comb, & B."— EMMA JANE THWAITES, age about 22, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion, hair, and eyes dark. A domestic servant; native of Port Talbot, Wales. Has been traced to Swindon and Hnngerford, and is walking to London. Associates with Salvationists ; will probably call at Salvation Army barracks on her way. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Philpott, Gloucester. HAMPSHIRE. 24.— Aldershot ( County).— Portrait and de- scription of FRANK HALL, a Lance Corporal of the Army Service Corps, from which he is a deserter, whose apprehension is sought for stealing, on 9th inst., £ 15 4s. 5d.; 3 cheques on Cox & Co. ( 1 No. A 410597, for £ 17 19s. lid.; 1 No. A 447256, for £ 14; the other No. 204870, for £ 13 4s. 2d.), all in favour of the Mess President, Army Service Corps ; 1 cheque on the Capital and Counties Bank, Jersey Branch, No. F 102560, for £ 4 6s. 8d., in favour of Lt. Parsons; and other cheques on various banks— Age 27, height 5 fb. 4 in., com- plexion fair, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes grey; speaks through his nose, and has a habit of biting his ficiger nails ; dress, dark blue jacket and FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 29. 1895 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. 3 vest, dark stripe trousers, blue melton overcoat with velvet collar, black tie ; was wearing a gold signet Sj^ ajj^ - 5 ling on left 3rd finger. Had with him a brown portmanteau, and a small clothes box. Information to Supt. Miller, Aldershot. 25. — Basingstoke ( County). — For stealing, 17th inst, at Old Baling— 1 pair of shoes, size 9 ; 1 brown overcoat, brown bone buttons, ticket and hip pockets ; 1 black hard bat, and 1 rush basket— GEORGE SMITH, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion dark, hair black, eyes ( sore) hght blue, clean shaved, wears earrirgs; dress, black jacket, white cord double breasted vest, large white buttons, fustian trousers, wearing stolen hat, heavy nailed boots. A tramping navvy. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Carpenter, Basingstoke. 26.— Southampton ( Borough).— Forindecently assaulting amale person — MORTIMER HOCOMBE, alias ALEXANDER, and MORTIMER, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion pale, hair ( cut short) dark ( turning grey), clean shaved, good teeth ( supposed false), stoops slightly; clerical appearance. In conversation he invariably precedes his remarks with, " Don't yon see"; dress, black Chesterfield coat, black trousers, high silk hat, black band, wore gold- rimmed pince- nez and a gold double chain. Stated he was a theatrical agent for Alexander's Pantomime Company. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Barry, South- ampton. HERTFORDSHIRE. 27. — Bishop Stortford ( County). — For obtaining £ 6 13s. 9d., by means of a fictitious cheque on the London and County Bank, Westminster Branch— ALFRED NE W TON, age about 45, height about 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion, hair, and beard ( turning grey) dark; wearing a brown cardigan jacket, dark peak cap; had the appearance of a painter's or plumber's labourer. He cashed the cheque at the International Tea Stores, stating he was employed by the builder to whom it » as made payable. Supposed identical with man described in Case No. 24, 15th inet. " Warrant issued. Information to Snpt. Duke, Bishop Stortford. • 28.— St Albans ( City).— For stealing, 17th inst., 1 gold riug, plain setting, large oval- shaped red stone ; 1 ditto, set " gold stone " ; 1 ear- ring, made of a fourpeuny- piece ; 2 old 5s.- pieces, one has been used as a brooch; 2 lion shillings; about a dozen jubilee and a number of old bronze and silver coins— A MAN, age about 30 to 33, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., stiff build, rather bow- legged ; dress, dark coat, light trousers ( supposed cord), soft cap. Information to Head Constable Blatch, St Albans. HUNTINGDONSH IRE. 29— Huntingdon ( County).— Yor obtaining mocey by means of a fictitious cheque— A MAN, ago about 4^, height 5 ft. 4 in., hair and beard dark ( turning grey) ; wore a brown cardigan jacket, and dark cap Appearance of a fitter. Has been a oleik. Has cashed about forty cheques. Information to Supt. Marson, Huntingdon. KENT. 30.— Ashford ( County).— For stealing" a coat and vest ( recovered) McEWEN, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., broad shoulders, complexion, hair and short moustache dark, eyes ( sunken) dark blue or hazel, lump and scar on forehead, high cheek- bones, speaks with Scotch accent; dress, fjrey jacket, dark trousers, cloth peak cap, heavy lace boots ( which appear tew large for him). Stated he was a boiler maker. Fond of talking about football. Has served in the Scots Fusiliers, and played in the football team; has also played for Blackburn Rovers and International England and Scotland. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wenham, Ashford. 31. — Sandgate ( County). — For larceny, 16th inst.— CAROLINE LEADBETTER, age 31, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown; dress, grey dress, trimmed brown velvet, black jacket, black 3traw hat. Native of Standford, Kent. Is accompanied by A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., hair light, moustache ginger; dress, grey check suit, hard felt hat. A bricklayer; has ser/ ed in the Army; and his son, age about 12; dress, brown cord knicker suit, red check scarf, skull cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Waghorn, Sandgate. 32— Sittingbourne ( Couriiy).— For deserting his wife and children, leaving them chargeable to the Milton Union-- JAMES TYLER, age 36, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion, hair, moustache, and eyes dark, small black mark bridge of nose, large scar across back of right hand, which prevents the hand being closed; dress, black jacket and vest, lavender stripe trousers, dark cap, light lace boots. An engine driver. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Capps, Sittingbourne. 33.— Tonbridge ( County).— For carnally know- ing a girl age 14, on 21th September last.— JOHN BURCHETT, age 34, height about 5 It. 2 in., com plexiou lair, hdr dark brown, moustache light; dress, blue cloth jacket and vest, black cloth trousers, black leggings, heavy lace boots, peak cap, similar in shape to that worn by tho Salvation Army, of which be is a member. Carried a bundle con- taining Salvation Army jersey, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. In the meantime, she continues to sell tickets made up into parcels of 21, at a shilling each, and a com- p'imenfcary ticket, and induces respectable persons to dispose of them, promising that they shall be on the platform. When calling at houses she presents a visiting card with " Mrs. O'Carroll, Ely Lodge, Burley Wood," or " Burley Wood, Leeds," printed thereon, and shows a ticket printed—" Irish Art Industry ; home employment for necessitous ladies, miniature landscape painting on riziline, and fine Irish lace. Mrs. O'Carroll will hold a sale of work in the above hall ( giving dales, & c.), from 11 A. M. to 10 P. M., and lecture on Ireland and Irish Industries. Grand concert and theatrical performance will fol'ow. Tickets, one shilling each." To each ticket she has a counterfoil, on which the persons purchasing are induced to write their names.
