All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THB KDITOK OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, IiOlUDOJf, S. W. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. In all eases where a reward is offered the name and address of some penon responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be. clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15*. per portrait, and of Is. ( id. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. fi. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of anofficer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 1. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or nnaloaous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons tobe apprehended or of stolen property bear anumber, and m • alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted im the PoLIoe GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once tramm't iu the td< ter notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in tie next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, riil be wholly responsible for any proceedings whit h may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. Tkey must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by • covering letter. 12. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identifica- tion by the Metropolitan Police the Photo- graphs and descriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from Bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door ; stealing bale of silk ; van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. A solicitor ; native of London. Is supposed to have taken a cafe or tea gardens in Davonshiro or Cornwall. See Case No. 2, 15th inst. Warrant issued. 2. — E Division. — Woodcut poitrait and description of GEORGE FREDERICK SAVILLE, late of 152, St. Gsorge's- road, Soathwark, whose apprehension is sought for obtaining, 29th alt., by means of a fictitious cheque on the National Bank, Chaxing Cross Branch, 1 gentleman's gold link chain, with spade guinea pendant; 1 gold repeater watch, No. 11395; 3 ladies' go'd half- hoop diamond rings, coronet set, mirked L | R, W | R, and R | a; 1 gentleman's gold keylees crystal calendar watc\ No. 170485; and 18 gold enamelled badges, " SODS of St. George" thereon — Age 45, height 5 ft. 11 in., very stout build, complexion fair, hair and heavy moustache light, eyes blue, prominent nose; speaks very loudly. Military appearance. Late foreman printer at the Constitutional Club, Northumberland - avenue. Formerly resided in America. Warrant issued. 3.— X Division.— For failiDg to appear to receive judgment on conviction for felony — DORCAS SNELL, age 63, height 5 ft. 4 in, complexion fair, hair grey, eyes blue ; drees, b'ack skirt, bine bodice, fawn- coloured shawl, black felt boots. IRVING HAYTON, late of 48, Graham- road, Dalston, a^ e about 28, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion sallow, hair ( cut close) light, slight moustache ginger ( straggling at enfls); well dressed. A clerk. Absconded 9th inst. Warrant issued. 5. — For obtaining 4 horses by means of a fictitious cheque — JOHN H. SANDERS, age about 36, height 5 ft. 6 in., square shoulders, com- plexion fresh, hair brown; appearance of a horse dealer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. AYRSHIRE. 6.— Ayr ( County).— For fraud, at Mauchline and Muirkirk, on 8th July last, and at various places during the past 2J years — JOHN COLE- MAN, alias J. ANDERSON and J. MURRAY, age about £ 0, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, dyspeptic complexion, large features, hair and moustache dark, full dark tyes, prominent nose, smart appearance, walks rapidly, but with a stiffness in his limbs, speaks with English accent; dress, blue cloth jacket suit, hard felt hat. Carried a large black leather bag containing samples of marking ink, liquid gold, and crown cement, of which he represented he was a manufacturer, having business premises at Leeds and London. He undeitook to pay shopkeepers 10s. per month as agents for the sale of his goods, to 2 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2 2, 1895. advertise their businesses in the local newspapers, and to supply show- case3 for exhibition, thus inducing them to purchase quantities of the goods ( which are worthless) for cash. He gave addresses at 16A. Poitland- crescent, Leeds; 2, Willoughby- grove, Willoughby Park- road, Tottenham ; and 4, Emma- terrace, Wanstcad Flats, London, but com- munications to them have been returned through the Post Office. Warrant issued. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 12. — Cambridge ( Borough).— For stealing £ 53 17s. 41.— CHARLES EGGLETON, age 24, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown ; dress, when last seen, dark blue serge coat and vest, light striped trousers, blaok felt hat, low shoes; carried a brown paper parcel containing clothing. A booking clerk on L indon and North Western Railway. Absconded 1st inst. Warrant issued. 7.— Ayr ( County). — For assault with intent to ravish, at Newmilns, 29th ult.— HUGH M'LAUGH- LAN, age 40 to 50, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion freBb, hair and m'u, tache light ( mixed wiih grey) fresh cut marks on forehead, left eyebrow covered with flaister, speaks with Irish accent; dres*, light brown tweed jacket, white mcleskin trousers, brown tweed cap, heavy boots. A navvy; likely to seek employment at railway or waterworks. Was traced towards Lanarkshire by way of Strathaven. Warrant issued. 8.— Ayr ( County).— For embezzling £ 18 4s. 8d. at Muirkirk, between 14th May and 4th ult.— JOHN McMAHON, age 24, height 5 fc. 7 in, com- plexion fresh, hair and slight moustache browD, scar right side of neck; smart appearance; speaks Ayrshire dialect; dress, dark corded jacket and vest, light grey t: ght- fitting trousers, light tweed cap. A miner's agent. Information to the Chief Constable of Ayrshire, Ayr. BERKSHIRE. 9 — Maidenhead ( Borough). — For stealing. 13th inst., 2 check suits, 2 blaok jackets anl vests 2 pairs black trousers, " W. Withnall, High- street, Maidenhead," on tabs of coats — CHARLES REEVES, age about 30, height 5 ft. 10 in , stout build, CDmplex'ou and hair dark, eyes hazel; dr, ss, dark coat, vest and trousers, blue spotted shirt hard felt hat. Stated he had recently left the Army. He ordered the clothing to be sent to a house in which he had taken lodgings, met the mesEenger at the door, obtained the goods, and decamped. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Maidenhead. 10.— Reading ( Borough).— For obtaining, lO. h inst., £ 80, by false pretences ( including 4 £ 10 Bank of England notes, Nos. 94775— 78, dated 22nd April, 1895, and 6 £ 5 Bank of England notes)— FREDERICK HOPE HIGGS, age 25, height 5 ft. 8 iD., slight build, complexion pale, long thin fa? e, hair brown, small moustache black, eyes dark brown, tattooed on arms and left shoulder; dress, dark blue ser^ e suit, hard felt hat, and ( supposed) new patent leather boots. A house painter. Has served in the Rojal Engineers, 20th Hussars, East Surrey Regi- ment, and the Barks Militia. Previously convicted at Reading, Oxford, and Devizes. Had in his possession a valuable English concertina, which he may be found playing at harmonic meetings held at public- houses. He obtained the money from a domestic servant, under promise of marriage, stating that ho was a carpenter, employed at a furniture shop, and intended to go into business. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading 13.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For stealing an overcoit, on 28th ult. ( recovered) — A man, known as' FLUTY," and " MADMAN," age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion dark, rather red face, hair dark brown, clean shaved, large scar right'side of neck; dress, black or bine cloth suit, white cricketing shirt with tain- down collar, black felt hat. Supposed native of Leicester. Attends ra: e meetings; well known amongst betting mea. Information to Chief Constable Holland, Cam- bridge. CHESHIRE. 14.— Nantwich ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), 23th ult., at Crewe, a handcart, painted slate colour, low wheels, 2 ft. 9 in. or 3 ft. high, long narrow body, sides and front can be taken off, " No. 9" marked on front board— JOSEPH BIRTLE, age 19 or 20, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair dark; dress, dark cloth jacket and vest, brown corduroy trousers, dark peak cap, supposed old brown overcoat and lace boots. A rag gatherer ; native of St. Helen's or Wigan. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Meredith, Nantwic'i. DERBYSHIRE. 15.— Alfreton ( County).— For shop- br, aking and stealing 2 pairs of boots, 1 pair men's blucher, sizs 8 ( one boot newly soled and heeled, the other heeled and nailed), the other pair recovered — CHARLEY LESTER, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, hair and moustache daik, has lost right forefinger at second joint; dress, dark coat, dark cord trousers ( much worn), red che: k neckerchief, dirty light cap. A tramping labourer; left Bakewell, 14th inst., stitieg he was going to Manchester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Eyre, Alfreton. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 11.— High Wycombe ( Bormigh).— For obtain- ing food and lodgings by false pretences— LOUISA WEST ( supposed false), age 60 to 63, height about 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., rather sf out build, complexion sallow, hair grey, eyes light blue, very bad teeth; dress, black serge skirt, blue blouse, yellow flowers, long dark blue cloth cloak, black plain straw hat, boat shape, trimmed black ribbons, bows back and front, wide black lace round neck, laced French kid gloves; wearing a plain gold wedding ring. Calls on clergymen, stating she had been a trained hospital nurse, was the daughter of a farmer of South Wales, widow of a grammar schoolmaster at Bath, and had five sons living there, speaks French fluently ; addicted to drink. Supposed identical with MADAME CHANTRIS, see Case No. 21, 6th September last. Warrant issued. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. Information to Head Constable Sparling, High Wycombe. DEVONSHIRE. 16.— Torrington ( County).— For burglary at Westward Ho, night of 13th inst., and stealing £ 24 IOJ. in gold, £ 1 10s. in silver, an overcoat, and a pair of lace - up boots.— Supervisee THOMAS GENT, Office No. 48J44, age 34, height 5 ft, 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, 5 blue dots back of right hand, T above right wrist, scar bi idge of nose, and boil scar right hip ; supposed dressed in dark brown plaid coat and vest, black- and- grey striped trousers, bowler hat, dark overcoat, lace- up boots with protectors ia bottoms. Sentenced at Barnstaple, 17th October, 1895, to 14 days hard labour, and 4 years police supervision, for stealing an overcoat. 445. 17.— Torrington ( County).— For stealing at Abbotsham ( with another in custody) a quantity of lead pipe ( recovered)— ARTHUR JAMES, age 23, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes blue, may have a very slight moustache, rather round shouldered, has a habit of standing with his hands in trousers pockets and head inclined forward ; dress, dark suit ( small plaid), red sock3, black felt hat and shoes. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Buchanan, Torrington. 18.— Exeter ( City).— Portrait and description of HARRY PEARSE, alias URIAH PEARSE, and HARRY TAYLOR, whose apprehension is sought for obtaining goods by fraud :— Age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in , rather stout build, complexion rnddy, full face, hair dark brown, side whiskers and heavy moustache, turns his feet outwards, awk- ward gait, very talkative, fond of drink and low company; dress, when last seen, light overcoat, new suit, black hard felt hat; carried a mackintosh and brown leather Gladstone bag. A builder's foreman ; native of Woodbury, Devon. Was at one time employed at Sileby Workhouse, Yorkshire. Left Exeter, 24th ult., by 10 35 a. m. train, London and South- Western Rail vay, for Waterloo. May be accompanied by a woman a^ e about 23, ta'l anei slight. Warrant issusd. DORSETSHIRE. 19.— Blandford ( Cour. t ).— For deserting his wife and family - PATRICK WILSON, age 37, height 6 ft, comple. vion sallow, ha; r dark, full beard and moustache black, eyes grey, scar on knee, sup- posed left; dress, light tweed coat and vest, dark striped trousers, hard felt hat, low shoes. Native of Stookport. Has served as master tai'or ia the 52nd Field Battery Rojal Artillery. A good coat hand; may seek employment at large shops. Wai- rant issued. ESSEX. 20.— Saffron Walden ( County). — For ob « ' taining, 14th inst., £ 6 13s. 9d., by means of a fictitious cheque on the London and C junty Bank, Westminster Branch— ALFRED NEWTON ( sup- posed fa'se), age about 45, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion, hair, moustache, short beard, and eyes dark, tl ia features; dress, dark coat, cardigan jacket, durk trousers and cap. Is accompaniei by a man, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., clean shaved ; shabbily dressed. Identical with man described in Cases Nos. 25, 27, 28, 30, 47, 43, 49, 60, 17th May last, Nos. IS and 21, 20th Sep'ember, and No. 24, 15th inst. Warrant issu- d. Information to Supt. Pry ke, Saffron Walden. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 21.— Gloucester ( County).— For stealing, 6th inst., a lady's brown silk umbrella, grey bora handle, horse- shoo shape, with silver- plated band 1 pair lady's L. ce boots, size 3 ; a black dressing comb, — EMMA JANE THWAITES, age about 22, height 5 ft. 1 cr 2 in., complexion, hair, and eyes dark. A domestic servant; native of Port Talbot, Waler. Has been traced to Swindon and Hungerford, and is walking to London. Associates with Salvationists ; will probably call at Salvation Army barracks on her way. Information to Deputy Caief Constable Philpott, Gloucester. HAMPSHIRE. 22.— Aldershot ( County).— Portrait and de- scription of FRANK HALL, a Lance Corporal of the Army Service Corps, from which he is a deserter, whose apprehension is sought for stealing, on 9th inst., £ 15 4s. 5d.; 3 cheques on Cox & Co. ( 1 No. A 410597, for £ 17 19s. lid.; 1 No. A 447256, for £ 14; the other No. 204870, for £ 13 43. 2d.), all in favour of the Mess President, Army Service Corps ; 1 cheque on the Capital and Counties Bank, Jersey Branch, No. F 102560, for £ 4 6s. 8d., in favour of Lt. He cathel the cheque at the International Tea Store?, ttating he was employed by the builder to whom it was made payable. Supposed identical with man described in Case No. 24, 15th inst. Dake, Bishop StortforJ. 24. — Watford ( County).— F^ r uttering a • fictitious cheque— ALFRED NEWTON, age about 45, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in , complexion, hair and moustache dark, hai recently had his bearl shaved off, thin features; dress, shabby dark clolhes and overcoat, black hard felt hat. Supposed identical with ISAAC or WILLIAM NEWTON, a law writer, at one time enp'oyed fit Colemar- street, to have proceeded to London on 3Ltult., and to have been at Bury St. Edmunds 4tli icst. Warrant issued. 25.— Watford ( County).— For embezzlement — WILLIAM DAY, age 19 or 20, h. ight about 5 It. 7 in , complexion fresh, thin face, hair ( inclined to curl) light brown, clean shaved; dress, rough • dci- k serge coat and vest, daik overcoat, light grey trousers, LEXTOW dark slr'pes, light cap ( all rew). A farm labourer ; native of Welwyn, Herts. Recently discharged from the Army, suffering from vai icose veins. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Wjmer, Deputy Chief Con- state, Watford. 26.— St Albans ( City).— For stealiDg, 17th inbt , 1 gold ring, plain setting, large oval- shaped reel stone ; 1 ditto, set " gold stone " ; 1 ear- ring, made of a fourpenny- piece ; 2 old 5s - piecce, one has been used as a brooch; 2 lion shillings; about a dozen jubilee and a number of old bronze and silver coins— A MAN, age about 30 to 33, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in , stiff build, rather bow- legged; dress, dark coat, light trouEera ( supposed cord), soft cap. Information to Head Constable Blatch, St Albans. KENT. 27.— Chatham ( County).— For stealing £ 11— JOHN HEMMINGS, age about 20, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fair, very blight moustache, slight scar about an inch loDg back of head; dress, when last seen, dark jacket and vest, brown cord trousers, black- and- white neckerchief, brown cap, elastic- side boots. Has worked in Deptford with a coal trolley, as porter at Covent Garden and Borough Markets, and at Ciiffo and Trindesbury as an agricultural labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lacy, Chatham. 28. — Sandgate ( County). — For larceny, 16; h inst.— CAROLINE LEADBETTER, uge 31, height 5 ft. 6 er 7 in , slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown; dress, grey dre; s, trimmed browa velvet, black jacket, black 5tr* w hat. Native of Standford, Kent. Is accompii- ied by A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., hair light, moustache ginger; dress, grey check sa t, hard felt tat. A bricklayer; has ser.- ed in the Army; and his ton, age about 12; dress, brown cord knicker sait, red ch^ ck scarf, skull cap. Warrant issued. Information to Snpt. Waghoin, Sandgate. 29— Sittingbourne ( County).— For deserting his wife and children, leaving them chargeable to the Milton Union-- JAMES TYLER, age 36, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in , complexion, hair, moustache, and eyes dark, small Hack mark bridge of nose, large fear across back of right hand, which prevents the hand being clcsed; drets, black jacket and vest, Lvender stripe trouserp, dark cap, light lace boots. An engine driver. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Capps, Sittingbouine. 30— Tonbridge ( County).— For carnally know- ing a girl age 14, on 24th September last.— JOHN BURCHETT, age 34, height about 5 It. 2 in., com plexion fair, Inir dark brown, moustache light; cress, blue cloth jacket and vest, black cloth trousers, black leggings, heavy lace boots, peak cap, similar in shape to that worn by the Salvation Army, of which he is a member. Carried a bundle con- taining Salvation Army jers9y, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bartlett, Tonbridge. LANCASHIRE. 31.— Rochdale ( Borough).— For indecent exposure— ARTHUR BAMFORD, a> e 25, height 5 ft. 7 in , complexion sallow, hair and slight mous- tache dark, left leg slightly bent; black rough cloth coat and vest, grey mixture trousers, black billycock hat. A mechanic ; native of Rochdale. Warrant issued. 32.— Rochdale ( Borough). — For larceny— ALFRED or ALBERT ASPINALL, age about 33, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and heavy moustache dark sandy; of military appearance. Is fond of singing comic songs in public- houses ; dress, dark brown check coit and trousers, dark vest, light grey soft felt lat. A pa: nter; native of Rochdale. Information to Chief Constable Buck, Rochdale.
