THE NEW SERIES. FfiIDA. 7, JULY 12, 1895. VOL. XII., No. 1204 PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. REGULATIONS. 1. All announcements for i nsertion in the POI. ICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them . should be addressed to THE EDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAHD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought trill be inserted in one issue of the TOLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. ( id. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must he guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. *] Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. A nnouncements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen proper! y bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in Ike next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings lohuh may result from such publication. 11 Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to bereeeived notlaterthan noonon Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. Theymust be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. . , 12. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements! or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime, The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, • r of the Police o' any County or Borough, must be e'early expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable, ( o) The person by whom it will be paid. ( cf) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise • tent, In relation to property stolen, or criminally taker or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on ite return without the offendei being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Mitropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1— Convict Supervision Department. — Woodcut portrait of Expiree HENRY ALKEN alias HENRY ALEXANDER CHAMBERLAIN, and HERBERT SIDNEY CRESSET! SMITH, Office No. 41935, whose arrest is sought in this district for obtaining his livelihood by dishonest means, in contravention of the Prevention of Crime Act, 1871, Section 7, Cause 1: — Age 3G, height 5 ft 11 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes bluish grey, mole back and left of neck and top of each forearm, ruptured right side ; smart appearance. Amongst other aliatrs has used the name? of the Earl of Airlie and the Earl of Shrewsbury and Talbot, and Doctor Sutherland, ar. d has ordered goods in the name of the Earl of Shrewsbury and Talbot, using stationery stamped with a coronet for the purpose. Sentenced at Norwich Sessions, 18th October, 1887, to 5 years penal servitude, in the name of Henry Aiken, for obtaining goods by fraud ; subsequently sentenced, 17th October, 1893, at Winchester, as Henry Alexander Chamberlain, to 12 months hard labour for larceny and fraud; and at Bow- street Police Court, 23rd October, 1894, to 4 months hard labour for failing to report. Chief officers of police are requested to give instructions to their officers for the arre3t of this man, under the section of the Act above quoted, and if arrested to communicate with this office. 2.— D Division- — For stealing a cheque for £ 24 3s. 4c?., 15th April last— MATTHEW McLEAN GOLDIE, age 24 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion swarthy, bloated face, hair and eyes brown ; dress, brown mixture suit, hard felt hat. Supposed native of Edinburgh. Warrant issued. 3— E Division.— For obtaining money by a worthless cheque — SEPTIMUS BRIGHT, age about 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, flabby face, hair and slight moustache dark brown, eyes grey; dress, long black frock coat and vest, dark tweed trousers, high silk hat. He goes to a private hotel, and after staying there a few days induces the proprietor to cash a worthless cheque drawn on the Adelphi Bank, Brown- street, Man- chester, after which he leaves without paying his bill. Warrant issu : d. 4. — W Division. — For stealing money, jewellery, and securities, and for assault— HER- BERT KRAHN, alias ALEXANDER CORRI- LARD, and LAWRENCE, age 3- 5 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 in, complexion, hair, and moustache, and eyes dark, brushes his moustache up at ends; has the appearance of a foreigner; dress, daik suit, high silk hat. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, Now Scotland Yard, S. W. 5. — P Division. — W. A. GILBY, No. 10, 3rd March, lfc93, not to be airested. Warrant withdrawn. Case BEDFORDSHIRE. 6.— Luton ( County). — FOP obtaining £ 2 by mears of a worthless cbpque— A mau who fave the name of G. LOWTON, and VV. H. LOUTON, 125, Prince of Wales- road, Kentish Town, age 55 to CO, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in , thin build, hiir ( ba'd on top), and moustache turning grey, peculiar light eyes ; dress, dark or black coat and vest, light grey plaid or large check troupers, dark necktie, tilk hat; of gentlemanly appearance and good aldress. He agreed to take a public- house, and to pay £ 43 for fixtures, drew a cheque for £ 45, and obtained the balance. The cheque, No. A 627715, waj taken from a book obtained by fraul, from the London and South Western Bank, Kentish Town Branch. He also attempted to take a bftr- house, and has since been endeavouring to find publis- houses which are to let. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Tydeman, Lcton. BERKSHIRE. 7. — Reading ( Borcugh).— For attempting to obtain a situation bv fals1 certificate of character, 18th March last— GEORGE BARTLETT, alias JOSEPH W. TAAFFE, age 21 or 25, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, tbiu face, hair dark brown, small light, moustache, round- shouldered. A chemist's assistant. May endeavour to obtain employment in that capacity. 8. — Reading ( Bormf/ b). — For embezzling £ 9 14s. 2£ d.— ERNEST JAMES TAYLOR, age 33, height 5 ft. 4 in., thin red face, red nose, hair dark 2 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. L » ti in the employ of the London and West of England Yeast Company. 9— Reading( Borough).— For obtaining money by false pretences 3rd inst.— A man, who gave th* name of PRITCHARD, age between 30 and 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion very fair, moustache light; dress, grey cloth suit, hard fdlt hat. He called at a shop, representing himself as an inspectoi of weights and roessures, and pretended to examine the scales, when he stated that now ones would be required, which he would send on payment of 5s. 6d , the balance to be paid monthly. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 10.— SlOUgh ( County).— For stealing, 2nd inst., a brown gelding pony, 12 hands, knees recently chipped ; a set of plated harness, horse- shoe buckles; a small wagonette, black body, chocolate- colour wheels, picked out red ; blue cushions ; mackintosh rug; an imitation skin- rug; and a driving whip— A MAN, ago about 40, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair brown, clean shaved, pro- minent nose, scar bolow bridge ; dress, grey check suit, grey csp, brown shoes. Information to Supt. Sutton, Slough. 11— Chepping Wycombe ( Borough).— For obtaining £ i by tal e pretences, 2nd May last— ALFRED HORLKY, 27 or 28, height about 5 ft. 10 in., hair and moustache light brown — FRANK HICKEY, age about 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in. Both are bookmakers, and attend race meetings. Wat rant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Head Constable Sparling, High Wycomb?. CHESHIRE. 12.— Macclesfield ( County).— For stealing, 16th ult., at Lyme Handley, a chamois leather bag containing £ 19- GEORGE DOBSON, age 35, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in , complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache and S'nall side whiskei' 3 dark ; dress, light grey plaid jaoket, grey cloth trousers ( with a bluish shade), small check clo! h cap, heavy lace boots. Native of Dininton, near Sheffield. Warrant issued, Information to Supt. Downes, Macclesfield. 13.— Oakmere ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a silver English lever watch— GEORGE BUNCE, a travelling watch and clock cleaner, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 8 OP 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, eyes grey ; dress, usually, light tweed suit. Is fond of singing and clog dancing; well known at Ormskirk and Preston. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Johnson, Oakmere. DENBIGHSHIRE. 14.— Denb'gh ( County). — For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences — A man, giving the name of ROBERT JAMES WILSON, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 5 in , moustache and slight side whiskers dark; dress, brown coat with faint green stripes, b'ack waistcoat, brown trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots ( worn), had with him a grey cap, and carried a check Inverness mackin- tosh. He obtained lodgings from the 8th to the 10th ult., under the pretence that he was the son of a contractor at Chester, and had come to make prel miliary arrangements for building a house in the neighbourhood, and that tve workmen would follow in a few dafs. Jone3, Denbigh. 15— Wrexham ( County). — For stealing, 9th ult., 2 nearly new platinum dishes ( weight, 1 about 120 grammes, 1 about 90 grammes); I ditto, about 50 grammes, uS9d a little; 1 ditto, about 10 grammes, old; 2 platinum crucibles, nearly new ( weight, 1 about 30, 1 about 20 grammes); a quantity of old platinum in form of 1 or 2 crucibles, and a large platinum boat, N. B.. 1 gramme 1543 grs. - WILLIAM RICHARD HARRIS, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, complex; on pule, round face, hair light brown, eyes grey, rather pointed chin, rather round- shouldered, curies his head forward and his hand in trousers pocket when walking, good looking. An analytical student. Will probably endeavour to emigrate to India. Had in his possession a large browi leather bag, " Harris " thereon. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Vaughan, Wrexham. DURHAM. 16— Durham ( City).— For stealing, 20th ult, a pair of light Hue cloth trousers, and a black coa< and vest, fine material— ALBERT PEIRSON, alia. WILLIAM SMITH, age 19, height 5 ft. 4| in., complexion fresh, oval face, hair ginger, eyes blue scar left eyebrow and right of forehead, hull o' vaoht tattooel on right fori arm, 5 lines, " love," and dot inside left forearm, indistinct mark back of left forearm, half bracelet and dot left wri^ t, yacht and soar back of left hand, V and 2 marks rigi. t side of chest, sailor, cross, and indistinct mirk inside fore- arm ; dress, blue serge jaoket, light mixtuie vest, light check trousers, blue peak cap ( all much worn) A seaman ; native of Lambeth. Was sentenced to one month's impiisonment at North Shields, 13th ult., for lawny, and has been four times convicted at Lambeth Police Court. Has a soloier's cirtificate of discharge in his possession. Is tramping his way to London. Information to Chief Constable Smith, City Police, Durham. ESSEX. £ 1 REWARD. 17.— Brentwood ( County).— For deserting his wife and children, leaving them chargeable to the BiHeric. y Uuii- n — GEORGE FREDERICK WOOD, a labourer, late of Pitsea, age 31, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in.. complexion fair, hair brown, moustache ard side whiskers light brown, eyes brown, '• G. Wood," sailor and crown, tattooed on one arm. Is supposed to be working on the railway near St. John's Wood. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the above- named Union for the apprehen- ion of Wood. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Allen, Brentwood. 18. — Chelmsford ( County). — For larceny— FREDERICK STRATTON, age 19, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 iD., complexion fair, hair light; dre- s, drabett jacket and trousers, cloth cap, heavy lace boots. A labourer; native of East Hanningfield. Is sup- posed to have enlisted. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Somerset, Chelmsford. 19. — Colchester ( County). — For larreny ( servant), at Cfacton- on- Sea, 28th ult.— WILLTAM WADE, age about 34, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light browD, eyes blue, tattooed on chcst and one wrist; dress, black coat and vest, dark blue trousers, black hard felt hat Has in his possession 2 pairs of breeches, gaiters, and other clothing. Supposed native of Suffolk. Accompanied by a woman, age about 30, height about 5 ft., complexion sallow, eyes dark, scar on nose; wearing a dress of black figured material, bla< k jacket and hat; enciente. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ackers, Colchestor. 20. — Grays ( County). — For robbery, with violence — JAMES STILLIWAY, age 20, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion sallow, hair dark, eye* bazel, tattooed on right forearm, globe with wreath, hani^- in- hand, bracelet with letters " E. R."; left forearm anchor, stars and stripes, cross and nude figure of a female; dress, tight- fi. ting blue serge jacket, blue serge trousers, " P. < fc O." cap with patent leather peak, lace boots with hi< h heels. A ship's fireman; native of Grays. Will probably endeavour to get on boatd ship. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jordan, Grays. 21.— Colchester ( Borough). — For stealing. 6th inst, a gold watch and chain ( recovered); 1 plain go d brooch, with curl of light hair in centre, secured by two pearls, aud £ 2 WOODs ( supposed false), age about 27, height about 5 ft. 6 in , comp'exion pale, bair dark, and slight moustache brown, low forehead, with tuft of hair hanging over, heavy dark eyebrows; dress, dark serge jacket ( much worn), black vest and trouseis, black hard hat. A boot laster. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Coombs, Colchester. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 22.— Swansea ( Borough).— For embezzlement — ROBT. N. MARKER, a tobacconist's traveller, age 32, height 6 fr., slight build, comp'exion pa'e, hair and moustache dark brown; dress, usually, ( ark grey plaid suit, black bowler hat, tennis shirt • vith low collar. Absconded 13th ult., and is sup- posed to have booked to Liverpool. Warrmt issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Capt. Colquhoun, Chief Constable, Swansea. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. £ 1 REWARD. 23.— Cheltenham ( County) — For desertiDg his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Cheltenham Union— HARRY FRANKLIN, age 43, height 5 ft. 8 in., well built, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, rather heavy sandy moustache, eyes brown, military appearance. A tailor; native of Banbury, Oxford. Tb e above reward will bo paid by Rowland Tice- liurst, Esq., Clerk to the Cheltenham Board of Guardians, to any person giving suah information as will lead to the arrest of Franklin. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McRae, Cheltenham. 21- Fishponds ( County).— For indecently assaulting a girl— ELLISTON MILNER, age 28, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, htir ( very thin on top) and eyes dark brown; dress, dark brown tweed cycling suit, straw hat, with black band. An assistant schoolmaster. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Mitthews, Fishponds. 25 — Bristol ( City).— For stealing, 21st ult.— A gold lever watch, No. 30362, white dial, gold bands, maker— Meyers, Bristol; and a sing'e^ tono diamond ring, claw setting— A man, giving the name of GEORGE CLEMENT HUGHES, New Kent- road, London, age about 24, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., com- plexion dark, hair, moustache and eyes brown ; dress, brown mixture plaid suit, white straw hat. May be found in the company of racing men. Information to Chief Constable Alibutt, Bribtol. HAMPSHIRE. 26.— Bitterne ( County). — For deserting his children, lGth April last— GABRIEL CHAPMAN, age 34, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light, scar under chin, large lump back of left hand. A ship's plater. Is supposed to be known at Sunderland and Newcastle- on- Tyne. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Matthews, Bitterne. 27.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For unlawfully pledging articles of jewellery ( recovered ).— JENNIE DERRINGER, alias PHELPS, and BROWN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes ( supposed) blue, good teeth; wore dark grey ulster and hlack straw sailor hat. Was accompanied by GEORGE SIMS, alias DERRIN- GER ( supposed to be her husband), age about 45, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in , complexion fresh, hair dark browD, eyes brown. They are well- known at music halls, having travelled the provinces as sketch artists and comedians, and may be found singing on the beach at sea- side towns. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. 28 — Southampton ( Borough).— For stealing an open- face patent lever watch, No. 56043; a long silver neck chain ; and a silk handkerchief— GEO. FORDER, age 22, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion dark, hair and slight moustache dark brown, eyes dark; dress, tweed jacket, diity cord trousers and vest1, striped Oxford shirt, cloth peak cap, heavy nailed boots ( down at beelj. HEREFORDSHIRE. 29— Weobley ( County)— For breaking into a school, 16th ult., at Penny Park, Clifford, and Htealing a lady's open- fa e silver geneva watch, No. 3397, small long gold guard with two lockets a'ta^ hed ( 1 locket containing h man's photograph); 1 lady's dress ring set 3 bine stones, 1 of slightly different shade ; 1 brooch ( half- penny cut out and silvered) ; 1 " Pearson's Weekly " pen ; 1 pendant FRIDAY JULY 12 18& 5 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. 3 containing red automatic silver pencil; 2 threepenny pieced with holes therein ; ivory anchor heart and cross; and ab > ut £ 20— A MAN, ego 20, height 5 ft. 2 in., slight build, sunburnt, hair light browu, weak lsneed; dress, blue monkey jacket, dark trousers, blue or black cap, red muffler. The appearance of a tramping labourer. Information to Supt. Ovens, Weobley. KENT. 30— Chatham ( County).— For stealing £ 40— JOHN CHESTER, age 25, height 5 ft. 4£ in., com plexion fair, htir litcht brown, eyes blue, tattooed sailor danciner on left forearm, dots on right wrist. A corporal of the Army Service Corps, from which ho is a de- erter. Previously employed as a carman; native of St. Giles', London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lacy, Chatham. LANCASHIRE. £ 1 REWARD. 31.— Skerton ( County).— For stealing, 24th alt., at Morecxmbe, 1 " Globe " pneumatic bicycle, Jenatzy tyre, diamond frame, enamelled black with gold lines, pla'ed parts, ball bearings to all parts, no mud guard, 30 in. front, 28 in. back wheel, brake, n. bbe- pedals, front foot rests, hammojk saddle pieiced with holes, common bag contaiaing oil can, double al- irm bell attached ; 1 bicycle, similar to above, without foot rests, brake- lever has been taken off— By two men: 1st gave the name of ISAAC DAY, 13, Pontefract- road, Normanton, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion and moustache dark; wore a light su't; 2nd gave the name of JOE KAY, 112, WakeSeld- road, Normauton, age about 36, hi i J ht 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, beard light; wore light suit. Warrants issued. The above reward will be paid by William Bramh'im, West- street, Morecambo, to any person givirg such information as will lead to the appre- hension and conviction of the thieves and the recovery of the bicycles. Information to Supt. Bryning, Skerton. 32.— Leigh ( County).— For failing to report— License H . Jder PETER TUNSTALL, Offi e No. 48143, age 56, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair grey ( thin on top), eyes grey, scar right side of forehead, outride left upper arm, on knees, long scar outside right knee, 2 burn marks right side of neck.
