All announcementx for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOB OF TJIE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAKD, LONDON, S. W. Particular s concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force: Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of • tolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. Gd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense • f engraving on wood. livery announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. Announcements conccrning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. S. Announcements of all persons tobe apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, wdl be wholly responsible for any proceedings which mag result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noonon Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition notlaterthan Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Sew Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street, Postal Order, or in Stamps. . 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James » tiling, lto, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boronphs therein, arrangod is striot alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTB bey ® nd the number at present supplied will be forward od on aoplioation in the form sot forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in tbo date of delivery of the POLIOI GAZETTE, may be at onoe notified to the Editor. < 0> The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. Tho Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of tha Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be c'early ixpressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable, ( o) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. g. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be poeted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. I- — D Division. — For stealing £ 265 — WILLIAM H. STOREY, age 19 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 7 in, complexion sallow, hair very dark, eyes dark brown, wart inside corner of left pye and behind left ear, slight impediment in speech ; dress, black jacket and vest, blaish- grey tweed trousers, black hard felt hat'; of smart appearance and good address. A native of Farn- ham. May endeavour to leave the country. 2.— D Division.— For embezzling £ 24 7s. 4fd. — EDMUND ADAMS, age 54, height 5 ft, 7 in, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark, thin beard and moustache, eyes dark brown. Has the appearance of being a heavy drinker; dreHS, dark grey overcoat with velvet collar, b;- own tweed jacket, 2 vests, high silk hat, low shoes. Warrant issued. 3. — E Division.— For obtaining £ 1,250, by false pretences — ELIZABETH MARTHA HODGES, age about 50, medium, height, com- plexion and hair ( turning grey) dark. A native of Freshwater, Isle of Wight. She represented she had unencumbered property and railway 6tock in the Isle of Wight. Supposed to be staying at Bristol. Warrant issued. 4. — J Division— For stealing, 29th ult, a lady; ' s brown mixture mackintosh, 3 capes attached ; 1 brown golf mantle with hood; 2 hats ( I black felt, trimmed black tips and ribbon; the other brown felt, trimmed brown and green ribbon) ; 5 brooches ( 1 gold, diamond shape, with pearl in centre small, silver, horseshoe in centre; 1 long, silver, Larrie " thereon ; 1 silver, open shape, white etone in centro ; and 1 old- fashion mourning) ; 2 wa'ches ( 1 lady's gold, " Coventry" on dial; the other a gentleman's old- fashioned double case, silver) ; 3 dress rings.— JOHANNA ROGERS, age 22, height " ft. 3 in, stout build, complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes blue, scar on upper lip, no3e deformed. A native of Portsmouth. — MINNIE COOPER, age 27, height 5 ft. 5 in, slight build, complexion fair, hair brown, eyes blue, delicate looking. A native of Southsea, lately resided at 35, Port- street, Piccadilly, Manchester. Both wearing blue dresses with white spots, and supposed part of the stolen property. 5— p Division.— For stealing, 11th inst, at Norwood, a brown mare pony, about 13 lands, small white star on forehead, thick mane, short tail, rather bent on forelegs; in good condition — THREE MEN: 1st, age 23, height 5ft. 4in, hair and mous- tache light; dress, blue melton jacket and vest, olive- green cord trousers, bird's- eye neckerchief, lace boots, hard felt hat. 2nd, age 20, 1 eight 5 ft. 6 in. complexion and moustache dark; dress, blark coat aad vest, o'ive- green cord ( roisers, bird's- eje nejkerchief, hard felt hat. 3rd, age 18, height 5 ft. 4 in.; dress, long brown overcoat, grey tweed trousers, blue silk neckerchief, blue cloth cap, wear- ing slippers. Appearance of costermongcrs. 6. — T Division. — For embezzlement, 12lli inst.— HENRY JONES, sga 18, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion pale, hair light, eyes blue; dress, dark brown jacket and vest, dark striped trouserp, dark skull cap. Native of Falliam. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Warrant issued. 7. — v Division. — For embezzlicg £ 30 — HENRY WOOLFORD, age 23, height 5 ft. 2 in, complexion fair, hair dark, eyes blue, scar back of head, has an impediment in Liis speech, very erect; dress, light suit, hard felt hat. A baker's assistant; native of Ilackfield, Hants. Warrant issued. 8.— v Division. — For embezzlement — WM. HARRIS, alias WILLIAM PALMER, ago 35, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in, complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) and moustache light; dress, dark tweed suit, old dirty cloth cap. A sergeant of the East Surrey Militia Regiment. Formerly served 12 years in Royal Irish Lancers, and as a constable in" V" acd " B" Divisions of Melropolit- n Police. Native of London. Was seen at Oxford on 5th inst, tramping the country. May be found in casual wards. Seo Case No. 4, 8th March last. Warrant issued. 9— V Division.— For embezzling £ 5,; 12th! ult. — JAMES RICHARDSON, age 32, height 5ft. 7in, complexion fresh, hair acd heavy moustache light; wore light brown overcoat, brown soft felt hat. Has tho appearance of a horse dea'er. 11.— Y Division.— For stealing, 5th ult, a pony, cart, harness, & c. ( recovered)— GEO. HILLIEH, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in, complexion fair, hai*, whiskers, and moustache light ( inclined to ginger), eyes blue, very red hands; dre3S, dark overcoat, light tweed trousers, black hard felt hat. CITY OF LONDON. 12— For falsifying the books of the Scottish Employers' Liability and Accident Insurance Co., Limited— GEORGE SCOULAR FRANCE, late of " Homelyn," Gisburn- road, Horneey, age ' 26, height about 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion very fair, hair very light, slight side whiskers inclined to sandy, delicate looking, prominent teeth, wears eyeglasses; dress, light grey jacket suit, round black felt hat, drab colour covert overcoat. A cashier; native of Aberdeen, and speaks with Scotch accent. Warrant issued. 13— For stealing £ 202 15s. 9d. — ARTHUR H. PRATT, a clerk, late of 98, Lyndhurst- road, Peckham, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion, hair, and small moustache dark; of Spanish appearance ; dress, grey newmarket overcoat, black frock coat suit and silk ha t, or light jacket and vest, dark brown speckled knickcrs, brown shoes, soft felt hat. Carried a black bag and a silk umbrella with black handle and silver mount. Had in his posession two £ 20 Bank of England notes, Nos. 75317— 8, dated 24tb January, 1895, and one £ 10, dated 21st January, 1895. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. ANGLESEY. 14.— Menai Bridge ( County).— For larceny, 9th inst.— JOHN C. ROWLANDS, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., rather stout build, complexion fresh; dress, dark clothes, brown felt hat, brown boots ( have been blacked, much worn). A clerk. Warrant issued. BEDFORDSHIRE. 15.— Luton ( Borough).— For failing to report— License Holder THOMAS JOHNSON, alias GEORGE EDWARDS, and JOSEPH WARD, Office No. 47837, age 70, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexsion fresh, hair grey, eyes blue, scar centre of forehead, on left cheek, left groin, inside right upper arm, across left knee, 3 on left and 1 on right shin, 2 moles on left side and 1 on right side of neck, raptured both groins. Sentenced at Bedford Assizes, 7th Jnly, 1888, to 7 years penal servitude, for uttering counterfeit coin. Licensed 19th March, 1895. D I 0 351. Information to Chief Constable Teale, Luton. BERKSHIRE. 16.— Maidenhead ( Borough).— For stealing a tricycle ( recovered). COOKE, alias PEACE, age abont 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion reddish blown, hair ( shoit), moustache and eyes dark, well bnilt; of military appearance ; dress, blue jacket, grey mixture trousers, light scarf, salmon colour cap, brown shoes. A rag and bone collector. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Maidenhead. 17.— Reading ( Borough). — For obtaining a blank cheque by false pretences— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair and moustache dark brown; dress, dark cloth jacket and vest, dark mixture trousers, black hard felt hat with flat top. He called upon a tradesman on 22nd ult., and asked him to oblige a professional gentleman in the neighbourhood with a blank cheque, and thu obtained one on Messrs. Simonds, Reading Bank, No. G. 224274, and shortly afterwards presented a cheque ( supposed the same) for £ 7 10s., at several places of business and endeavoured to get it cashed in the Dame of a solicitor, but was unsuccessful. He also attempted to obtain another black cheque from a corn- dealer under similar representations. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. CHESHIRE. 18.— Chester ( County).— For stealing a bicycle ( recovered)— SAMUEL WILKIE, age 25 ( looks 30), height 5 ft. 4| in., rather stout build, com- plexion fresh, hair auburn or light, eyes blue, scar right side back of head, faint scar 3 in. below left nipple, and one over spine, rather prominent front teeth ; dress, when last seen, in loose blue fatigue suit of the Cheshire Regiment, and field- service cap. Speaks with strong Scotch accent. States he is a native of Larbert, Stirling. He enlisted in King's Own Scottish Borderers in 1892, deserting on the 2ud Sept. of that year, and was arrosted at Chester for deserting on 25th March last, when ho was transferred to the Cheshire Regiment. When arrested at Chester he was travelling with Day's menagerie. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cheshire Constabulary, Chester. DENBIGHSHIRE. 19.— Wrexham ( County).— For rape, 2nd inst. — THOMAS HUMPHREYS, age about 22, height about 5 ft. 5 in., hair and slight moustache light, gruff voice, walks with short quijk steps. A labourer. May endeavour to enlist. Warrant issued. 20.— Wrexham ( County).— For stealing a lady's fawn- colour cape, with hood, green- aud- rcd plaid liuing— ELIZABETH JANE HAYES, age about 50, height 5 ft. 3 in., very stout build; dress, black skirt and imitat: on sealskin jacket, velvet hat with wing. Is accompanied by her husband, age 50, height 5 ft. 5 in., hair dark, rather heavy moustache, deeply pock- marked, who is a member of the Ironfounders' Society, and is well known at Blackburn. They hawk the country with small ware3, which they carry in a tin box. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Vaughau, Wrexham. DERBYSHIRE. 21.— Derby ( Borough).— For failing to report— License Holder GEORGE WEBB, alias BENJA- MIN PARKER, Office No. 47870, age 35, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, large srar between eyebrows, star and bust of female in wreath left of chest, flower in pot outside upper right arm, bust of female in circle, and V R. inside ditto, roses and sailor with flag in left hand outside right forearm, ship outside left upper arm, bust of female and wreath inside left forearm, sailor on anchor with flag in left, and sword in right band, coat- of- arms outside left wrist. Sentenced at Derby County Sessions, 28th June, 1893, to 3 years penal servitude for housebreaking. Licensed 27th March, 1895. M T 586. Information to Chief Constable Delacombe, Derby. FORFARSHIRE. 22.— Dundee ( City).— Portrait and description of DAVID DALSON, or DAWSON, alias HECTOR MUNRO, a vanman, whose apprehension ia sought for uttering a forged document, also for stealing a dog- cart ( recovered) :— Age 24, height 5 ft. 5 in., hair light brown, eyes blue, scar left cheek and inside left forearm, wart left shoulderblade. A native of Dundee. See No. 972, Criminal Register ( Scotland), 1894. His modus operandi is principally to obtain bicycles on hire, and dispose of them. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. Warrant issued. 23.— Dundee ( City).— For embezzlement anc stealing 8 gentlemen's silver lever watches Nos. 68335, 10195, 60333, 59399, 46100, 46929 20711, 43928; 1 do. Waltham lever, No. 5456271; 2 do. Swiss watches, Nos. 118- 564, 167136; 1 lady's Swiss watch, plain dial, No. 37381; 2 do. opal dials, Nos. 38479 and 384130; 1 lady's Swiss do., No. 36348 ; 2 lady's 9- carat gold keeper rings ; 2 9- carat gold wedding do. ; and 5 gem rings. Most of the watches have " Benton & Co., Birmingham," on dial, and nearly all are new— JOHN ARCHER, age about 40, hoight 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., very corpulent, hair, light brown, moustache light, eyes blue; dress ( generally) navy - blue cloth suit, blue over- coat, soft felt hat. A watchmaker's agent or can- vasser. Came here from Liverpool about 10 months ago. Has been in America and speaks with American accent. Is very talkative. May be accompanied by his wife, supposed native of Man- chester, age about 28, tall, stout ( enciente). He left Dundee for Perth on 5th March last. Will probably seek employment at watch manufacturers, book publishers, & c. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Dewar, Dundee. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 24- Bristol ( City). — For stealing, 15th ult,, 1 lady's half- hoop gold dress ring, set 7 diamonds in a row; 1 15- ct. gold keeper riDg, much worn; 1 wedding ditto; 1 lady's gold open- face geneva watch, dark mark near figures 7 and 8, initials on back ( supposed) " C. W." ; 1 metal keyless Water- bury watch, plain back ; and a malacca walking stick, 6ilver band, dog's head carved in ivory— A man who gave the name of HOPE SEBFER MONTEITH, nge about 33, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, thin features, hair ( bushy) brown, long light sandy moustache, eye3 sunken, I upper tooth deficient left side of jaw, long cut scar over right eye; dress, dark serge coat and vest, light check trousers, black soft hat ( dent in crown), nearly new brown leather lace boots with square tors, woollen socks, marked " T. H," or " F. H." in red wool. Wore a black- and- gold colour link chain with black enamelled locket, containing hair, " In memory of " thereon. Left behind a brown brief bag containing wearing apparel. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 25.— Bournemouth ( County).— For obtaining money by a fictitious cheque, signed " Edward Jack- son "— A MAN, ago 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion, whiskers and moustache dark; dress, dark speckled jacket, cord trousers, black hard felt hat. Knapton, Bournemouth. 26.— Southampton ( Borough)— For stealing a gold wedding ring— FANNY VICKERY, age 30, height 5 ft. in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes hazel, slightly pockmarked; dress, black jacket, green dress, bright red shawl, black straw hat. Warrant issued. 27.— Southampton ( Borough).— For forging and uttering an endorsement on a banker's cheque on the City Bank, Old- street Branch, No C/ M 11645, for £ 4 16s. 9d , signed " Edward Jackson"— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion pale, hair, moustache and side whiskers dark brown ; dress, dark jacket, light trousers, black hat. KENT. 28. — Canterbury ( City). — For obtaining money by a fictitious cheque, No. M 74034, on the Westminster Branch of the Imperial Bank, Limited, signed " Edward Jackson" — A MAN, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache dark ( tun. ing grey) ; dress, black coat, dark brown trousers, black hard hat or dark cloth cap. Has the appearance of a labourer. See Cases Nos. 25, 27, 30, 47, 48, 49, and 50. Information to Chief Constable Farmery, Can- terbury. 29.— Folkestone ( Borough). — For embezzle- ment— ROGER THWAITES, late of 54, Bourne- i mouth- road, Folkestone, a brewer's traveller, age , about 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ia., complexion dark, , hair and moustache turning grey; dress, blue FRIDAY, APRIL 26, 1895. THE POLICE GAZETTE 7 reefer coat, black hard felt hat. Had with him a nut- brown leather kit bag, about 24 inches lonp, 12 incbes broad, and 16 inches deep. Is known at Finchley. Absconded 15th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Folkestone. 30.— Rochester ( Borough). — For obtaining money by fictitious cheques, Nos. 74027- 8, on the Westminster Branch of tho Imperial Bunk, Limited signed " Edward Jackson "— A MAN, age about 40 height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion, whiskers, and moustache dark ; dress, black frock coat, dark brown trousers, black hard felt hat. Has the appearance of a paiuter. Supposed wanted elsewhere for similar offences. See Cases Noa. 25, 27, 28, 47, 48 49, aud 50. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Broadbridge Rochester. 31.— Tunbridge Wells ( Borough).— For steal- ing £ 5— TOM MANN, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 or8 in., stout build, complexiou fresh, hair ( turning grey) and heavy moustache browD, eyes dark, walks with short quick steps; drees, blue serge jacket and vest, brown cloth trousers, black hard felt hat. A hotel luggage porter. Likely to seek employment as outside porter at railway stations and hotels. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Prior, Tunbridge Wells. LANCASHIRE. 32.— Hurst ( Oounty). — For stealing, 30th ult, at Denton, a very dark bay horse, about 10 years, 14 band?, star on forehead, weak on near fore knee long mane and tail ( rattier vicious) ; a spring curt, long body, low sides, wheels 3 ft. high, p- iinted red and recently re- hooped, spoke in near wheel fastened to felloes with wire, tailboard fastened with rope, shafts made from part of an old wooden bedstead, 4 Edward Horsfield, Broker, William- street, Ashton- under- Lyne " on side — A MAN, age ab ut 54 height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and whiskers grey; dress, grey jacket and vest, cord trousers, light pea'r cap, lace boots. Supposed wanted for similar offences elsewhere. Information to Supt. Hewitt, Hurst. 33. — Lancaster ( Oounty). — For failing to report- Supeivisee JOHN DALTON CASSlDY Office No. 453 48, age 21, height 5 ft. 4 in , com- plexion fresh, hair brown, eye* grey, scar on rig* t eyebrow, back of right elbow, both sides of left wrist, and iuside 4th left finger. Sentenced at Preston Sessions, 4th January, 1893, to 9 mouths hard labour and 3 years police supervision for ware- honsebreaking. 3004— 21. Information to Supt. Barnett, County Police Office, Burnley. 34.— Leigh ( Oounty).— For obtaining £ 6 by false pretences at Earlestown, on 4th inst.— ISAAC BOND, age 42 height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion pale, hair brown, whiskers and moustache sandy; smart appearance; dress, dark mixture tweed suit and cap, or hard felt hat. A potato dealer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt.
