All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should he addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. ° Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. ;( Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the articls in question to be thereby identified. 4 I: i all cases where a reward is offered the name a, ul address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will he prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. Grf. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. G Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must he guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to he inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 1 Announcements concerning stolen property must he guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to he apprehended or of stolen property hear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. . . 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to he inserted i n the POLIC « GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will he wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later thar, noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They mui' be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Xetc Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond S( Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street, Postal Order, or in Stamps. _ 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James h tiling, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who wilt furnish the rates on application. 14. SPECIAL NOTICE. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. THE AMERICAN OXYZONE SYNDICATE. The EDITOR suggests to the Local Police Forces to acquaint any pers > n who may apply to them for the return of money forwirded to tin abive- na- ned Syndicate, that the principal agents in the business are in custody on a charge of fraud, and nothing can be done in the matter until the conclusion of the case. In the event of their conviction, any Postal Orders found in the letters enclosing them, addressed to the Syndicate, will then be returned to applicants through the Local Police. SPECIAL NOTICE. FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A caso has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Polico. Tho prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated ihe dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refuuded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is unwilling to incur any expense with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in tho ormmunication sent to this Office to the effect that, the offender is not to be arrested beyond the Unite 1 Kingdom. 1 ho necessity for tho adoption of such a course will bo apparent from the fact that the POLICE GiiEiiE ip circulated in the Colonies. Department — For stealing a blank cliequc on the Sbioi editch Branch of the London and County Bank, and forcing same, thereby obtaining £ 250," 17th ult.— WALTER BURTON ( supposed false), age about 33, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion fair ( slightly fresh), hair light brown, slight moustache light, eyes blue ; wearing brown or dark overcoat, black felt hat, stand- up collar, lace boots. Also with being concerned in uttering same— Mrs. BURTON ( supposed false), age about 30, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fair, full face, hair ( cut short and frizzy) light auburn ; dress, generally, dark costumo and jacket, feather boa, hat trimmed with green. And a MAN, said to be the woman's brother, a^ e 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., broad shoulders, com- plexion fair; wearing dark ulster with cape, and black felt hat. 2. — E Division. — For larceny ( bailee).— WILLIAM WAKEFIELD, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, clean shaved, small grey eyes, heavy jaw, large mouth ; dress, dark clothes, high silk hat. Warrant issued. 3. — M Division.— For stealing a cash- box containing £ 17 and a cheque for £ 18 18s. on the Royal Insurance Company, drawn by Squires & Sons— FRANK BULUEN, age 16, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes black, heavy dark eyebrows j dress, grey jacket and vest, brown trousers, light cloth cap. A native of Manchester. 4.— T Division. — Woodcut portrait and de- scription of ERNEST SHORT, late of 32, Palmer- ston- road, Wimbltdon, whose apprehension is sought for stealing £ 50— Age 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion fair, hair ( turning grey) light, moustache very light, eyes blue; dress, when last seen, dark grey suit, brown overcoat, black soft felt hat. A clerk ; native of Ely. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Large, Middlewich. 9.— Nantwich ( County). — For deserting his wife and children— ALFRED REDFERN ADAMS, age 34, height 5 ft-. 6 in., complexion and hair dark. Ho left Saudbach 6 months ago. May be carrying on the busiuess of a draper, or travelling the country hawking drupery. Has a pedlar's certificate granted at Middlewich, on 24th February, 1894. DORSETSHIRE. 10.— S h afteS bury ( County).— For night poach- ing, 30th ult.— HENRY HARRIS, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 in , stout, build, complexion fresh, hair brown, small side- whiskers and moustache, eyes blue, anchor and flags tattooed left arm. Is fond of step- dancing in public- bouses. Has travelled with a boxing booth. A notorious poacher, and has been previously convicted in Dorsetshire, also in Glou- cestershire and Wiltshire. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Elford, Shaftesbury. 11.— Weymouth ( Borough). — For failing to comply with an order under the Married Women ( Maintenance in Case of Desertion Ant), 1886 ( arrears due amounting to £ 42) — MICHAEL JAMES GRIFFIN, late of 105, Grange - road, Birkenhead, age about 28, height. 5 ft et 10 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair brown ; som< times wears glasses; generally dressed in light suit. Warrant issued. 15.— Southend - on - Sea ( County). — For deserting his wife and children, leaving them chargeable to the Roohford Union, on 1st, August, 1894— CHARLES BROWN, alias CADDY, age 35, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout builJ, complexion fresh, haii light, eyes blue, clean shaved, speaks with broad dialect; is much addicted to drink ; dress, black coat, brown trousers, blue handkerchief with white spots lound neck, black cloth cap or lard felt bat. A parlour maid. Is supposed to be accompanied by a man, age about 23, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in , slight build, complexion fair, lair ( very short) brown, clean shaved. A gardener and coachman. Ho called at a villa, stating he had taken the adjoining one, and asked to be recommended to some good tradesmen, and afterwards used the name of the person on whom he called, on a cheque on the London and South- Western Bank, which was cashed for him by oi. e of the tradesmen. LANCASHIRE. 24.— Rochdale ( County). — For embezzlement — ROBERT ROBERTS, recently clerk to the Chamber Colliery Co., Limited, Hollingwood, age 28, height 5 ft, 6 in., complexion sallow, hair, side whiskers, and moustache brown, 3 white dots on left side of faca; dress, bla. ik worsted jacket and vest, dark mixture trousers, piak cap, and shoes. A native of Ruthin. Speaks wiih Welsh accent. Formerly employed at Westminster Colliery, Dwersyllt, neir Wrexham. Will probably Beak emp'oyment at a colliery office. Warrant issued. CLARK, who stated ha had conic from America, and was looking for some people for whom he had soma presents; age about 38, heig it 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion lair, moustache light, bald top of head; dress, black coat, brown tweed vest, black trousers, brown billycock hat, low shoes. CROFTON ARNOLD, a commercial traveller, age 2/, height 5 ft. 6 iu., slight build, complexion pile, hair light, s. ight moustache, deep voice; well educated, and of plausible mannor; wearing frock coat, hi^ li silk hat, turn- down collar, large bow. He obtains a situatiou as commercial traveller by a forged character, aud, aft. r obtaining samples and an advance of money, absconds. Warrant issued. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 31.— Newark ( Borough).— For stealing about £ 9, 8th inst.- THOMAS SMITH, age about 34, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair light ( turning grey), moustache brown, scar under chin, 2 at back of head, rather flat- footed; dress, black coat ( with tail pockets) and vest, brown cord trousers, red- and- vvhite check scarf, light grey peak cap, blucher boots. Has served in the Army, supposed Medical Staff Corps. A native of Morpeth. Formerly lodged at 28, Canal- street, Derby. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Richards"; 1 silver- platel tea and coffee service, embossed both sides, raised flowers; 6 ronnd ivory- handle dinner knives ; 1 pair ivory- handle carvers ; 3 dozen large electro- plated forks ; 1 dozen small ditto; 2 dozen dessert spoons ; 2 dozen table spoons ; 1 patent plated cheese scoop, white handle, with trigger action ; 1 silver- plated cruet- stand, 4 cut- glass bottles ; 4 silvjr- pla< ed fish knives, with ivory handler— FREDERICK COSTLEY, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., very stout build, complexion fresh, full face, hair and moustache brown, eyes blue, tattoo maik on arm ( supposed right) ; dress, brown- and- black check suit, morning coat, black hard felt hat, brown boots. A clerk. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ainsworth, Handsworth. 39.— Lichfield ( County). — For stealing £ 12, 18th inst.— JOSEPH W. TAAFFE, age about 24, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair ( thin face), hair dark brown, small light moustache, round- shouldered, 2 blind boils right side of neck ; dress, black double- breasted reefer jacket faced with black silk, dark vest and trousers, dark sailor- knot tie, collar turned down at corners, light lace boots. A chemist's assistant. May seek similar employment. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Pilliner, Lichfield. SOMERSETSHIRE. 33.— Ilminster ( County).— For deserting his wife and family- JOSEPH SPENCER, age about 45, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, small side whiskei' 3 and moustache, eyes brown, small Roman nose, shuffling gait, and turns his feet out. A labourer ; nativeof Winsham. Has been in the Navy. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Rawlings, Ilminster. 34— Temple Cloud ( County).— For embezzle- ment- CHARLKS BENJAMIN ELMS, age about 50, height 5 ft. II in, stout build, comp'exion fresh, hair light brown, slight moustache and side whiskers light, eye3 grey, scar undi r lc- ft eye, limps slightly on left leg; dress, suppised blue cloth suit, dark overcoat, short black leather leggings, black bow'er hat. A colliery sales clerk; native of Bath. Has been in the Coventry Police Force, and is known at Newcastle- on- Tyne, Sunderland, Middlesborough, and Bristol. Absconded 11th inst. Warrant issued. SOMERSETSHIRE. 79.— Weston- super- Mare ( County). — 19th ult., washed ashore, the body of a MAN, age ahout 45, length 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, hair dark, slightly bald over forehead, heavy auburn moustache and small side whiskers, good teeth; dress, waterproof ulster, with cape, p'aid lining, " Guaranteed to stand the Australian climate," & c., " BB." and two bees as trade mark, " U. H. S. & Co., London & Melbourne,' stamped on tab, light brown plaid suit, trousers buttons stamped " R. C. Hagon, Sydney," blue \ with white spots, light lace boots. Found in pockets— a plated match- box, 2 storks stamped on each side ; 1 2- blade knife, stainpod " Tho3. Turner & Co." ; 1 pair steel framed eyeglasses. The post- mortem examination showed deceased bad been shot behind the right ear, and a large size revolver bullet was found in the brain. Photograph may be obtained on application. The following articles have been found, which are btlieved to have been the property of the deceased:— A nickel case French watch, with silver chain, fancy fetter pattern, and pendant composed of 4 small pieces of dressed granite, two colours, cut and fitted into a half- iuch square, such as usually worn by granite masons as a specimen of workman- ship; a black American cloth hand- bag, with iron frame and nijkel slides, containing a pocket cork- screw ; an umbrella, with 25- in. Fox's frame, cherry- wood crutch handle; 7 small Australian opals, uncut; a British bull- dog revolver, five chambers, stamped " W. Jeffery & Son, 12, George- street, Plymouth." Information to Supt.
