Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, a,. d or* v alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted im the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may resuit from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturdav m rninq. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Brummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at C'nartng Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will bo forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any oom- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- , lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering ft reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points- fa) The amount of the reward. ( 6) The conditions on which it is payable. ( o) The person by whom it will be paid. (<*) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 1. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought, to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— B Division.— For stealing 3 cheques and £ 4 4i. Od. cash— GEORGE WILKINS, age 16, height 5 ft., complexion, hair and eyes dark, has big feet and walks awkwardly; dress, dark brown jacket suit, tweed cap. A native of Windsor. Warrant issued. 2— B Division.— For rape — JOHN MAN- jj LEY PORTER, alias POST, age 47, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion, hair, whiskers and long moustache dark, turning grey; eyes ( weak and sore) hazel, wears a green shade, and sometimes two pairs of spectacles; dress blue witney overcoat, black morning coat and vest, dark striped trousers, black soft felt hat. An American. Warrant issued. 3.— K Division. — For stealing a piano- organ ( recovered)— WILLIAM BROWN, age 22, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown; dress, black jacket, cord trousers, hard felt hat. Supposed native of Essex, and to reside between Chadwell Heath and Brentwood. See Case No. 96, 24th ult. Warrant issued. 4. — N Division. — For rape — JOHN P. BRAND, alias WHITLOCK, an American, age 30, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., very upright, complexion sunburnt, hair dark, slightly bald in front, eyes very dark and piercing; dress, dark pilot coat and vest, grey trousers with dark stripes, black soft felt hat, dented in centre, broad brim. Warrant issued. 5.— W Division.— For obtaining £ 6, by means of a fictitious cheque— JOHN LEACH, age 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes grey; dress, black coat and vest, cord trousers, black soft felt hat. A sailor; native of Leeds. Warrant issued. 6.— X Division. — For indecently assaulting boys and inciting to commit unnatural offences— F. W. WILLIAMS, age 25, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion pale, hair brown, thin features, clean shaved. Supposed native of Brecon or Aberdare. Has been a curate in the Church of England. Warrant issued. 7.— Y Division. — For larceny — WILLIAM BREND, age 25, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes blue ; dress, dark overcoat, brown tweed trousers, alpine bat. A native of Bideford, Devonshire, where his father resides. 8— Y Division.— For stealing £ 5 — JOHN THORNTON, age 21, height 5 ft., complexion fair, hair brown, slight light moustache, eyes blue, scar ' eft eyebrow and sic1^ of nose; dress, dark tweed trousers and vest, supposed dark coat. A native of Newcastle- on- Tyne, where his father resides. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. ABERDEENSHIRE. 1 £ 9. — Aberdeen ( City). — Portrait and de- scription of JAMES WILSON, whose apprehension -" s sought for embezzling £ 303— Age 48 to 50, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., hair dark, whiskers and moustache dark, mixed with grey ( may now be shaved), full face; has large flat feet; dress, when last seen, dark coat and vest, grey trousers, dark brown overcoat, rough grey ulster, and low- crowned hard felt hat. A mill manager and grain merchant; native of Aberdeenshire. Absconded 3rd inst. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Wyness, Aberdeen. BERKSHIRE. 10. — Maidenhead ( Borough). — For stealing, 17th inst— 1 pair grev tweed trousers; 2 diagonal jackets; 1 light vest; 2 black hard felt hats ; 4 pairs of socks ( 1 black, 3 worsted) ; 1 blue and pink striped cotton shirt; 1 blue and white handkerchief; 2 mufflers ( 1 white with red spots, the other black with white spots); and 1 red- and- blue striped shirt— A man, called " TOOR," age 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, eyes blue, peculiar shaped chin; dress, dirty brown holland slop, moleskin trousers, militia shirt, heavy lace boots, soft brown felt hat. A navvy. 11.— Maidenhead ( Borough).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— CHARLES HENRY LINCOLN, nge 4", fceight 5 ft. 10 in., complexion dark, hair daik brown, turn-' ng grey, T H E POLICE GAZETTE. TUESDAY, APRIL 18, 1893. heavy dark moustache, eyes hazel; dress, dark serge suit, brass buttons on vest, light necktie, high silk hat. Supposed native of America. He stated that his luggage and horse were at an address in Windsor ( false), and requested that they might be sent for. He left a letter written in cypher for his property to be given up, also a key, and requested that his luggage might be unlocked as soon as it arrived. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Maidenhead. CARNARVONSHIRE. 12. — Carnarvon ( County). — Escaped from H. M. Prison, Carnarvon, on the night of 31st nit., and wanted for burglary committed the same jught— FRANCIS ASHBY, alias WALFORD, BROOKE, PENNESTON and MOXWELL ( see Case No. 7, 24th February last, and Case No. 6, 7th inst.), age 29, height 5 ft. 8jt in. ( with socks), slender build, complexion swarthy, hair ( scanty on top of head) brown, eyes brown, lost upper front tooth, small mole right side of neck, dot tattooed base of left thumb, burn mark left forearm neat- elbow. Is said to have been born at Christiansand, Sweden. After escaping he committed a burglary, and took away a dark brown tweed plaid ulster; a great coat, West of England cloth, Chesterfield pattern, dark grey, velvet collar, lined with black satin, good condition ; a black round jacket; a black felt hat, broid brim, square top, old- fa3hioned pattern, nearly new ; a pair of lace boots ; a pair of brown riding gloves, a tobacco pouch, which were in the pocket of great coat. May dispose of the ulster or great coat at some pawnbroker's between Abergele, Chester and Liverpool. The boots were found at an hotel at Pensarn, Abergele, Denbighshire, where he committed a burglary on 2nd inst., and took away a pair of boots and trousers. His prison trousers were found in a field near Voryd Rhyle. Information to the Chief Constable, Carnarvon. CUMBERLAND. 13.— Cockermouth ( Count//).— For embezzle- ment— JOHN ELLIS HASTINGS, age 31, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion dark, liair, side whiskers and moustache dark brown; dress, black coat and vest, blue serge trousers, black hard felt bat. A native of Carlisle. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Johnstone, Cockermouth. DURHAM. 14.— West Hartlepool ( County).— For shop- breaking and stealing about 100 gold rings ( see Case No. 26)— JACK , age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion swarthy, hair ( turning grey) and moustache dark, eyes blue, speaks with an Irish accent; dress, long dark coat, cord trousers mended between the legs, grey worsted jersey, dark cap, dark spotted muffler. Stays at common lodging houses. Is supposed to have served in the 5th Fusiliers, and to have been sentenced to 5 years' imprisonment for breaking into a public house. Information to Supt. Parkinson, West Hartle- pool. 15.— Durham ( City).— For failing to report— Licence Holder GEORGE SIMPSON, alias JOHN SMITH, GEORGE WALLACE, WILLIAM OGILVIE, and DUNCAN McDONALD, Office No. 44545, age 34, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown ( turning grey), eyes hazel, scrofula scats left side, and boil scar back of neck, 3 stab wounds on It thigh near groin, A. O. M. inside right and JOJJS inside left forearm, blue dot between each thumb and forefiuger, varicose veins right calf. Sentenced at Durham, 1st July, 1889, to 5 years penal servitude for shopbreaking. Licensed 3rd inst.. Has been convicted at Dublin, Edinburgh, and Cupar. Information to the Chief Constable, Durham. felt hat; a pair of light lace boots, kid tops, toe- caps ; and 3 double- bladed pocket knives, one with corkscrew and hook on back — A TRAMP, age about 24, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, round face, no whiskers; dressed in the stolen clothing. He left his old clothes behind, also a velveteen fronted sleeve waistcoat ( supposed stolen). Information to Supt. Elsey, Braintree. HERTFORDSHIRE. 17.— Hitchin ( County).— For stealing a horse, cart and harness ( recovered) when let out on hire— ARTHUR BLYDE, age about 21, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, fringe on forehead, eyes brown, moustache dark, full face; dress, dark tweed suit, and hard felt hat. Sup- posed native of Plaistow, Essex. He is employed as agent for Messrs. A. & G. Taylor, photographers, Ludgate Hill, London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reynolds, Hitchin. ESSEX. 10.— Braintree ( County).— For housebreaking, at Wethersfield, on 17th inst., and stealing a brown plaid jacket, velvet collar, buttons close to chin, two side pockets, one breast and one ticket pocket; a blue silk neckerchief with blue dots; a white wrapper; a pair cf black diagonal cloth trousers ; a blue check shirt; a pair of braces; a black hard KENT. is.- Canterbury ( City). — For stealing a collecting box containing about 20s., from an hotel on 28th ult.— A MAN. age 25 to 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown; dress, black morning coat and vest, light tweed striped trousers, black billycock hat. Carried a grey mackintosh, and a small paper parcel. Stated he was a commercial traveller for a firm of paper- bag and string manufacturers. Information to Chief Constable Farmery, Canter- bury. 19.— Folkeston e ( Borough).— For failing to surrender to his bail, on 5th inst., to answer a charge of conspiracy and fraud in . connection with " The Star Portrait Company," " The Imperial Portrait Association," Folkestone, " The Judge Publishing Company," Southend ( Archer & Co.), ' The Crescent Pastel Company," Bournemouth ( John Forrest), and " Frederick Cair," Worthing— GEORGE GOULD, alias BERESFORD, and FORREST, age about 37, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion swarthy, thin oval face, hair, moustache, and eyes dark brown, high cheek- bones, aquiline nose, one finger on left hand has no nail, and the next finger has an imperfect nail, rather bow- legged, walks with a long swinging stride ; good appear- ance, and pleasing address; speaks with an American accent. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Folkestone. 20. — Tunbridge Wells ( Borough). — For stealing a quantity of cloth and tailor's trimming— FRANTZ DE L1NNY, a Frenchman, age about 60, height 6 ft., complexion fair, hair grey, light mous- tache ( turning grey), pockmarked, stoops slightly when walking. A tailor. Was accompanied by his wife, a Frenchwoman, age about 50, very tall, complexion dark; dressed iu black. Both speak broken English. They booked by the 7.10 a. m. train, 14th inst., from Tonbridge to London Bridge. Are supposed to be known at Bradford, Dover, and London. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Tunbridge Wells. LANCASHIRE. 21.— Kirkham ( County).— For stealing at Poul- ton, 15th inst.— 2 pairs of paper hanger's scissors; 1 paper hanger's brush, black bristles ( nearly new) ; 1 apron ; 1 scraper; 1 small pointing trowel; 1 putty knife, black handle with brass band, letters O. P. T. J. M. E. on blade— A TRAMPING PAINTER, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., heavy dark brown moustache, bloodshot eye3 ; dress, old brown check jacket with white linen jacket underneath, dark grey trousers and vest, brown billycock hat, very greasy and without a band. Information to Supt. Cross, Kirkham. 22.— Leigh ( County).— For larceny, 15th inst.— A YOUTH, age about 16, height 5 ft., complexion dark, hair dark brown, round features; dress, dark suit, dirty plaid muffler, black hard felt hat. Information to Supt. Higgiubotham, Leigh. LEICESTERSHIRE. 23.— Leicester ( Borough). — For embezzling £ 28 13s. 9d., on 30thult.— WILLIAMT. CHURCH a clerk, age about 25, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair ( parted at side, plastered down and brushed up in front) dark, very slight moustache, otherwise clean shaved, very near- sighted and wears glasses, is well educated and of pleasant manners ; wears, on Sundays, a dark grey frock coat and silk hat, and, on week- days, a short brown over- coat, pilot shape, and black morning coat. He is fond of music, plays the banjo and sometimes per- forms as a nigger; he is a good baritone singer, and is in great request at smoking concerts. He also sings in amateur operatic performances and may be found in a stage chorus. His favourite songs are " Our ' Armonic Club," " The King's OWD," " Masks and Faces," and " True till Death." He is also a member of the Manx Club. Absconded 30th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Duns, Leicester. LINCOLNSHIRE. 24.- Grantham ( County). — For obtaining 3 pints of beer, and an ounce of tobacco, by false pretences, on 5th inst.— JOSEPH KETTLE, age 53, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, turning grey, whiskers and moustache dark ( turning grey), eyes grey; dreas, dark jacket, grey vest, white cotton cord trousers, lace boots, hard felt hat. A labourer ; native of Gunby. Has been previously convicted of a similar offence and for larceny. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Grantham. 25.— Grimsby ( County). — For housebreaking, at Cleethorpes, between 15th and 23rd ult.— SAMUEL WILKINSON, a gardener, age 46, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair light or ginger, beard and moustache turning grey, rather high cheekbones, bold eyes, walks erect; dressed ( when last seen) in dark coat, grey or brown tweed trousers, blue striped collar and front, no tie, black hard felt hat, lace boots. Has worked at Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Doccaster. Is fond of horse- racing, and may be found in low public houses among betting men. Has been several times convicted of larceny. Is also wanted in Yorkshire for horse stealing. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Stennett, Grimsby. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 26.— Mansfield ( County).— For embezzlement — JOHN GEORGE MART, late of Sutton- in- Ashfield, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, small light moustache; dress, brown jacket suit, turn- down collar, black hard felt hat. Carried a brown mackintosh and black Gladstone bag. Has been a schoolmaster and rent collector. May apply for a situation as clerk. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hcnsley, Mansfield. 27. — Nottingham ( County).— For larceny ( bailee).— WILLIAM TREVELYAN, alias WAL- TER TREVELYAN, age 65 to 70, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., slender build, complexion pale, hair grey, whiskers and moustache, eyes blue, prominent fore- head; dress, black coat, dark cloth trousers, felt hat; usually carries a small black hand- bag. A watchmakcr ; states he is a native of London. He goes round to country villages, collecting watches and clocks to clean, which he pledges and then decamps. Warrant issued. SHROPSHIRE. 28. — Oswestry ( Borough). — For stealing a watch— GEORGE LEWIS^ age 37, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair, whiskers and mous- tache sandy, large eyes, bloated face ; is of drunken habits. A tramping watchmaker; native of Bir- kenhead. Frequents common lodging houses. Is supposed to be in Lancashire or Yorkshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Langford, Oswestry. STAFFORDSHIRE. 29.— Tunstall ( County).— For failing to report — License Holder GEORGE OWEN, Office No. 44243, age 43, height 5 ft. SUSSEX ( EAST). 30.— Hailsham ( County).— For larceny from a draper's shop, at Heathfield, on 10th inst.— TWO MEN : ( 1st), age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers, and moustache giDger ; dress, light plaid jacket and vest, dark cord trousers, light cap With peak. Carried a carpenter's basket. States he is a carpenter; supposed native of Tunbridge Wells. ( 2nd), age about 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion and hair dark, full whiskers and moustache; dress, dark jacket, dark cord trousers, black liard felt hat with narrow brim. States he is a carpenter ; supposed native of Tun- bridge Wells. Information to Supt. Renville, Hailsham. 31.— Hastings ( Borough).— For housebreaking at St. Leonard's, 25th ult. — WILLIAM FOX, age 29, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes hazel, cap, spur, and whip tattooed left forearm, ring middle finger left hand ; dress, grey jacket, cord trousers, hard felt hat, all old and dirty. A rag and bone collector; native of Win- chester. Is known at Eastbourne and Portsmouth. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Glenister, Has- tings. WARWICKSHIRE. 32.— Solihull ( County).— For stealing a horse { recovered) on 12th January last, GRANVILLE P. BANTON, ago Ii0 to 35, height 5 ft. 5 in, com plexion dark, full face, hair dark browD, beard and moustache black, large dark eyes, is rather talkative and speaks as if a little tongucd- tied; of gentlemanly appearance and good address; dress light tweed suit, billycock hat with small brim, or small cloth cap ; carries a heavy malacca cane, silver knob, li G. P. B." engraved thereon; sometimes wears riding breeches and leggings. He was formerly manager of the Grand Hotel, Sunderland, aud pro- prietor of the Winter Gardens, Birmingham. He is supposed to have left the latter place about the beginning of February last. Is accompanied by bis wife, age about 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in, slight build, complexion pale ; and their two children, a. girl age 2, and a boy age 9 months. He took a furnished house and hired horses, agreeing to pay by the week. He sold the horses at Cave's Depository, Birmingham, and left the district. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. YORKSHIRE ( NORTH RIDING). 35. — Thornaby- on- Tees ( County). — For stealing a suit of clothes and a quantity of bed and table linen, on 29th ult. — A man who gave the name of REEMA, alias JOSEPH JACKSON, age 55 to 60, height about 5 ft. 6 in, com- plexion fair, thin face, rather sunken cheeks, hair grey, bald on top of head, no whiskers or mous- tache, red mark and wart on top of head, stoops a little when walking, part of right second finger amputated, speaks with a strong foreign accent; dress, new brown mixture cloth overcoat, dark cloth suit, collar and tie, hard felt hat, new side- spring boots; carried a new brown leather portmanteau and a parcel wrapped in American cloth, and bad a lady's umbrella with him.
