' ' 2. Particulars concerningpersons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible Jo. the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated, forlraxts of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engraving, of stolen property will be promptly inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of \ hs per portrait, and of 7s. Qd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 8. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature ofanofficer of not less rank than Superintendent; ana, if the nam, of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police or hi, immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. T. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank - than Inspector, or analogous thereto. REGULATIONS. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property hear a number, a,. dan J alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request fir insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which mat/ result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They mutt be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond If Co.," Post Office Order payable at Cnarmg Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1. — C Division- — For stealing a diamond bracelet, set three rows of diamonds in silver half way round, gold back — JOHN SHINE, alias MATLERT, age 63, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair white, eyes grey, very thick grey eyebrows ; dress, grey overcoat, high silk hat. He entered a jeweller's shop with another man, and a quantity of jewellery was shown them, but they left without purchasing, and immediately after the bracelet was missed from the counter. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering ft reward for the discovery of property or the detection of orime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points- fa) The amount of the reward. ( 6) The conditions on which it is payable, ( o) The person by whom it will be paid, ( cf) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 1 No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTB.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. CITY OF LONDON. 2.— For stealing £ 20 — EDWARD SULLIVAN, late of 113, Royal Mint- square, E., age 18, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, freckled face, hair light brown, eyes ( sunken) hazel; dress, dark tweed suit, black hard felt hat. Has been in a reformatory. Absconded 8th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BEDFORDSHIRE. 3. — Bedford ( Borough). — For stealing 19s., and obtaining money by false pretences, on 29th ult. — A MAN, age between 30 and 40, height about 5 ft. 8 in., side whiskers and moustache light, sharp sunken eyes, freckled or blotchy face, long thin nose ; dress, navy- blue overcoat, black trousers, hard felt hat. Stated he was authorized to collect sub- scriptions on behalf of the Bedford Volunteer Fire Brigade, and produced a printed fire brigade sub- scription list. Information to Chief Constable Thody, Bedford. BERKSHIRE. 4.— Newbury ( County).— For stealing at En- borne, 31st ult.— A dark tweed coat and vest with small yellow spots; a pair of light cloth trousers, nearly new ; a red and white muffler; a red handker- chief ; and a black hard felt hat — WILLIAM SMITH, age 19, height 5 ft. 7f in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey, scar right cheek, burn scar left side of neck and chest, and front of left leg; dressed in the stolen clothing. A native of Enborne, Newbury. He deserted on 26th ult. from the 2nd Battalion Royal Berks Regiment, stationed at Portland. His regimentals have been found. He is supposed to have enlisted in the Army Service Corp3. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bennett, Newbury. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 5. — Aylesbury ( County). — For deserting his wife and children in February last, leaving them chargeable to the Amersham Poor Law Union— JOHN EDWARDS, a farm bailiff, age 41, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair and whiskers brown, eyes grey, no beard or moustache, slightly bow- legged. Is supposed to be living with a woman, age 21, whose relatives reside near Grays, Essex. Letters havo passed between him and his brothor at Hinckley, Leicestershire. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Webb, Aylesbury. CARNARVONSHIRE. 6. — Carnarvon ( County). — Escaped from H. M. Prison, Carnarvon, on the night of 31st ult., and wanted for burglary committed the same night — FRANCIS ASHBY, age 29, height 5 ft. 8^- in. ( with socks), slender build, complexion swarthy, hair ( scanty on top of head) brown, eyes brown, lost upper front tooth, small mole right side of neck, dot tattooed base of left thumb, burn mark left forearm near elbow. Is said to have been born at Cbristiansand, Sweden. After escaping he committed a burglary, and took away a dark brown tweed plaid ulster; a great coat,. West of England cloth, Chesterfield pattern, dark grey pepper and salt, velvet collar, lined with red satin, good condition ; a black round jacket; a black felt hat, broad brim, square top, old- fashioned pat- tern, nearly new ; a pair of lace boots ; and a front and collar ; a pair of brown gloves, a tobacco pouch, which were in the pocket of great coat. May have since changed the prison blue serge trousers. He visited farm houses and stayed some hours, stating he was a tea dealer, and promising to send the occupiers a packet of tea. He travels a great deal by night. May dispose of the ulster or great coat. ( See Case No. 7, 24th February last.) Information to the Chief Constable, Carnarvon. ESSEX. 7.— Chelmsford ( County). — For failing to report— License Holder THOMAS PERRY, alias MOLLETT, and JAMES HAMMERSLEY MOLLERT, Office No. 44493, age 42, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair brown ( thin), eyes grey, nose inclines to right, scar centre of forehead, between right thumb and forefinger, top of first right finger, on each eyebrow, and left upper arm, left eye weak, mole left shoulder, left ribs and left buttock. Sentenced at Chelmsford, 1st February, 1887, to 5 years penal servitude for burglary. Licensed from Borstal Convict Prison, 20th nit. B N 249. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Chelmsford. 7 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. FRIDAY, MARCH 10, 1893. 8.— Colchester ( County). — For an offence against the Merchandise Marks Act — CHARLES KD13LER, a Gorman, age about 55, height 5 ft. 6 in., hair light brown ( turning grey), eyes grey, full beard and moustache, inclined to be tandy, always wears eyeglasses, is inclined to be bow- legged, large square- looking head, broad shoulders, is very ex- citable, speaks fairly good English; dress, dark overcoat and trousers, round felt hat with rather broad brim. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ackers, Colchester. KENT. 9. — Gravesend ( Borough). — Portrait and description of GEORGE WRIGHT, alias Captain GORDAN CAMERON, LENNOX CAMERON, and LENNOX GORDAN, whose apprehension is sought for stealing furniture to the value of £ 150, whilst acting as caretaker of several unoccupied famished houses ; age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 i » ., complexion fair, hair dark brown, bald on top of head. A native of Alton, Hants, where his wife, father, and brother now reside. Lately resided at 87, Waterloo- road, London. 7* known at the Charity Organization Society, Brighton, and at the Work- men's Rest, Kingston- on- Thames, where he was seen on 28th January last, and at Twickenham, where he was seen on 24th January, and is well known to the police of those districts. He appears to have associated himself a great deal with Christian mission work, and has been a member of the Salvation Army in various towns in which he has been living. Warrant issued. ^ Information to Chief Constable Thornton, Gravesend. LANCASHIRE. 10.—' Wigan ( County).— For stealing at Ashton, 1st inst.— A lady's silver lever watch, silver dial, steel hands, No. 3054- 5, supposed maker " H. Wolfe, Manchester "— A YOUTH, age 17, height about 5 ft. stout build, hair ( cut very short) dark, flat nose: dress, black jacket and vest, dark striped trousers, which had a black patch on one knee and a brown patch on the other, brown cloth cap, boots too large for him. Information to Supt. Bra3sington, Wigan. 11.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report— Supervisee, WM. PEARSON, alias ANDERSON EDWARDS, THOMAS JOHNSON, THOMAS WM. EATON, and JAMES McGUINNESS, Office No. 42918, age 54, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, large ears, aquiline nose, 1st left finger injured, scald scars on breast. Sentenced at Manchester, 20th October, 1879, to 12 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision for receiving. Liberated 12th May, 1892, on a second license, which expired 12th June, 1892. LEICESTERSHIRE. 12.— Leicester ( Borough). — For stealing £ 30 and a quantity of jewellery on 19th ulto.— HAROLD WORTLEY STEWART, alias HENRY LESLIE CURTIS, and THOMAS CHARLES ( see Case No. 19, 24th ulto.) ; age 25, height 5 ft. 3^ in., slim build, complexion fresh, hair black, light or sandy moustache, eyes blue ; dress, light suit, or black coat and vest, light trousers, black billycock hat, button boots, one of which is stitched on side. Information to Chief Constable Duns, Leicester. OXFORDSHIRE. £ 3 REWARD. 13.— Henley- on- Thames ( County). — For attempting to carnally know a girl under the age of 13 years, on 28th November last ( see Case No. 28, 27th January last)- WILLIAM POFFLEY, age 49, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion ( inclined to be blotchy) fresh, hair brown ( turning grey), clean shaved, eyes blue, cut scar on back of left hand ; dress, dark coat, black band round right sleeve, dark vest, shepherd's plaid trousers, black hard felt hat. May be found working at his trade, that of a bricklayer. He is well known to travellers, having kept tho Red Lion lodging- house, Henley, for the past ten years. His wife and family now reside at Reading, and he has friends at Newbury and Hungerford, Berk- shire. The above reward will be paid by Mr. Thomas Hamilton, of Henley- on- Thames, for the apprehension of Poffley. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Keal, Henley- on- Thames. SHROPSHIRE. 14.— Whitchurch ( C" mty).— For stealing a silver watch and chain ( recovered)— FREDERICK JO YNSON, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., com- plexion sallow, hair and moustache light, may be letting his beard grow, eyes light blue, rather bow- legged ; dress, black jacket, dark brown trousers, black hard felt hat. A native of Newcastle- under- Lyme, where he has relations. Wa3 lately in the employ of J. B. Joyce & Co., clockmakers, Whit- church. Is well known among railway servants on the L. & N. W. Railway, to which stations he went repairing the clocks. Is fond of attending football matches, where he may be found. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Edwards, Whitchurch. SURREY. £ 5 REWARD. 15.— Reigate ( Borough). — For housebreaking, 12th ulto., and stealing— 1 coral necklace, composed of 3 rows, gold clasp; 1 lady's silver geneva watch, No. 50987, maker " Bennett, London"; 1 silver albert, curb pattern; 1 scarf pin, set imitation diamond ; 1 oblong scarf pin, set turquoise ; 1 scarf pin, shape of a buckle, set turquoise; 1 bronze scarf pin, fox's head, red eyes; I circular silver brooch with raised centre ; 1 diamond- shape silver brooch, set green stones ; 1 silver brooch with glass centre; 1 brown speckled tweed jacket— TWO MEN: ( 1st), age about 26, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fair, believed to have a very small light moustache; dress, white slop jacket, moleskin or dirty cord trousers, heavy nailed boots, brown cloth peak cap, worn at back of head ; ( 2nd), age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., stout build, black whiskers; dress, dark coat, moleskin or dirty cord trousers, heavy nailed boots. One of the men is believed to have several tattoo marks on wrist. Both had the appearance of navvies, and will probably seek employment where new drainage or other works are being carried on. These men were begging in the neighbourhood, and were traced to Banstead and Sutton the same evening. The above reward will be paid by Miss Wilkinson, Redhill, for the apprehension and conviction of the thieves, and recovery of the property. Information to Head Constable Morant, Redhill. SUSSEX ( EAST). 16.— Brighton ( Borough). — For stealing the sum of £ 4 — JOSEPH JEWELL, age 17 ( looks younger), height 5 ft., complexion fresh, hair dark, eyes dark brown, 2 front teeth in upper jaw wide apart; dress, long black overcoat, dark coat and vest, brown cord trousers, black cap. A native of Brighton. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Terry, Brighton. WARWICKSHIRE. 17.— Aston ( County). — F& r stealing bicycles which were advertised for sale on trial— WALTER FOSTER, age 23 or 24, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, no whiskers or moustache, eyes brown, scar over left eyebrow, two moles on left cheek, is supposed to stammer; dress, dark blue suit, brown soft hat, or black hard billy- cock hat. A native of Lewisham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Walker, Aston. 18.— Birmingham ( City).— For horsestealing — GEORGE VAUGHAN, age 38, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, hair brown, small sandy moustache, thin side whiskers, full eyes, hollow cheeks, long face ; dress, light coat, old dark trousers ( rather tight), soft felt hat or cap with peak. May seek employment at stables as a horseclipper or groom. Has been in the Army. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Farndale, Bir mingham. WILTSHIRE. 19.— Marlborough ( County).— For stealing £ 5 10s. 0d., on 30th ult.— A MAN, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, light brown moustache, otherwise clean shaved, rather large prominent nose ; dress, old brown coat and vest, edges braided, light cord trousers, shows red brick marks on knees, brown bowler hat. A tramping bricklayer, supposed native of Bristol. Information to Supt. Pierce, Marlborough. WORCESTERSHIRE. 20.— Pershore ( County).— For rape, at West- mancote, on 18th ulto. — EVAN HARVEY, age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, slight light moustache; dress, light grey cloth suit marked with paint, dark cloth cap with straight peak. A painter; supposed native of Bristol. Was lately employed at Tewkesbury. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cope, Pershore. 21.— Stourbridge ( County).— For obtaining a revolver, watch, bicycles, & c., by fraud, through the " Bazaar, Exchange and Mart"— A man who gave the name of GEORGE PHILPS, age about 26, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion sallow, hair and slight moustaehe dark, full round face, of good address; dress, blue serge suit, lace boots, black hard felt hat. This man engaged lodgings at Bewdley, on 20th February, which he said he would occupy on 27th. On 28th he arrived, when he received a large number of parcels, 2 bicycles, & c., and left on 1st ulto., stating he was going to Bristol. At that time he was riding one of the bicycles. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pugh, Stourbridge. YORKSHIRE ( EAST RIDING). 22.— Hull ( Borough). — For stealing furniture ( recovered), between 1st Sept., 1892, and 20th Feb. — CHARLES HENRY BLACKBURN, age about 32, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light, respectable appearance ; dress, long dark overcoat, dark suit, tourist hat. An oil miller; native of Driffield. Was employed about 12 months since as goods guard on the Caledonian Railway, Hamilton, near Glasgow, and has recently been a publican in Hull— ELIZABETH BLACK- BURN, age about 30, height 5 ft., complexion very pale, thin face, hair light. Warrant issued. 23.— Hull ( Borough).-— For stealing a silver lever watch, No. 6953— WILLIAM ARTHUR, age about 24, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair ( curly) and eyes dark brown; dress, black jacket and vest, blue serge trousers. A ship's steward, late of 55, Rosamond- street, Hull. Warrant issued. 24.— Hull ( Borough).— For stealing harness — JAMES DUNLAVEY, an Irishman, age 25 or 26, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, slight moustache, military appearance ; dressed in ordinary labourer's clothes and cap. A bricklayer's labourer; late of Middle- street, Hull. May have joined the Army or Militia. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Gurney, Chief Constable, Hull. YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING). 25.— Ingleton ( County).— For stealing, at Aust- wick, on 12th ulto.— A grey mare, aged, 16 hands, well bred, lame on off fore- leg, cross- cut tail; an old riding bridle with snaffle bit; and an old riding FRJTVAV. APRIL 7. 1893. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 3 saddle, repaired on flaps— A MAN, age 28, height 5 ft., hair and moustache dark, no whiskers ; 6peaks with a strong Lancashire accent; dress, black jacket, check tweed waistcoat, fustian trousers, lace boots. A groom or farm labourer. Information to Supt. Guun, Ingleton, near Kirkby Lonsdale. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. DORSETSHIRE. 26 •— Wareham ( County).— Remanded for lar- ceny ( dwelling), at Swanage, on 28th ult.— JAMES RAWLINGS, alius SMITH, of Wandsworth, Lon- don, age 41, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, flat nose, has a squeaking voice, anchor tattooed back of right hand, cross fags and crown left forearm; dress, dark green cord jacket ( such as worn by railway porters), pair of postman's old trousers with red stripe down side, old black cap; wore a white apron round waist. He travels the country mending ware and um- brellas, and carries a carpenter's basket containing old umbrellas and tools. Information to Supt. Carter, Wareham. ESSEX. 27.— Brentwood ( County).— Sentenced to one months imprisonment on 30th ult. for larceny— WILLIAM PURKISS, alias WM. BADHAMS, age 28, height 5 ft. 8i in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes dark, Bear from bullet wound on right thigh, lost first joint of second finger right hand,; dress, black cloth coat, light tweed vest, dark striped tweed trousers, black hard felt hat, heavy lace boots. Is supposed to be wanted for similar offences else- where. Information to Supt. Allen, Brentwood. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 28.— Fishponds ( County). — Sentenced to 3 months imprisonment on 3rd inst., for fraudulently obtaining alms— HERRMANN BERTEL, age 21, height 5 ft. in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes hazel, lost first finger left hand, heart, C. K., 1872, tattooed right forearm, anchor between thumb and finger left hand, mermaid, H, left forearm, burn mark and national emblem tattooed left wrist; dress, light plaid coat, vest and cap, pepper - and - salt trousers, side- spring block front boots, nearly new, A native of Hamburg, Germany. Information to Supt. Matthews, Fishponds. 29.— Gloucester ( County). — Sentenced to 2 months imprisonment, 27th ult., for larceny ( lodger) — JAMES GINKINSON, alias WILLIAM HENRY BATES, and JAMES JENKINSON, age 29, height 5 ft. 2\ in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes grey, slight sandy moustache, small scar right side of forehead and left side of bottom lip, abscess scar left shoulder, burn scar back of left wrist; dress, dark tweed suit, and brown bowler hat. A native of St. Helens, Lancashire. He travels from town to town obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, and decamps the next morning, stealing anything he can lay his hands on. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Philpott, Gloucester. PROPERTY STOLEN. HEREFORDSHIRE. 30. — Bromyard ( County). — Remanded for burglary— A man who gives the name of WILLIAM JONES, age 62, height 5 ft. 3 in., hair dark brown, bald patch, the size of a shilling, on left side of head, tuft of sandy hair on chin, turning grey, lost all back teeth except one on right jaw, birth mark on right hip ; dress, navy- blue monkey jacket, fustian vest with white buttons down front, corduroy trousers, black hard hat, new boots, nailed, and tips on heels. States he was born at Bodenham, Herefordshire, and that he lived in Birmingham for twenty years, but refuses to give any address. Seems to be well acquainted with prison rules. Had in his possession a gold wedding ring, " Live & be happy" engraved on inside; and a white duster, red border, marked " R" in red in one corner. Information to Supt. Lewis, Bromyard. Supposed by THREE MEN, who were seen in the vicinity the previous day, and on the day of the burglary, and who are known to have been staying at Crewe for some days previously: 1st, age 50 to 60, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., medium build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache grey, no beard; dress, fawn- coloured dustcoat, slate- coloured trousers with black stripe, dark brown felt hat. 2nd, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion sallow, black moustache and beard, trimmed to a point, eyes brown; dress, rough black cloth suit and overcoat, black felt hat, black tie with horse shoe pin, studded with pearls representing nails, in- variably wore a brown kid glove on one hand ( supposed right) ; carried an oak sapling walking- stick. Described himself as a hay and straw dealer, 3rd, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 10 in. to 6 ft., com plexion fresh, heavy light brown moustache of a bristly description, stands out from his lip, and looks as if it were clipped, sunken eyes, walks erect, supposed to be slightly pockpitted ; dress, black coat, mixture coloured trousers, black felt hat, bright red necktie with pin, wore a high collar, showing stud behind ; carried a light gorse walking- stick. These men were dressed in better clothes than their appearance and class of life seemed to warrant, and wore linen collars and cuffs, brown kid gloves and lace boots with broad soles. Nos. 2 and 3 were on the up- platform at Crewe Railway Station, on Wednesday evening, shortly after 7 o'clock, apparently watching the arrival of the trains from Manchester or Liverpool, for London. Entrance was effected by placing a ladder to one of the bedroom windows. The above reward will be paid by Baron von Schroder to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thief or thieves, and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Walked with a stick, and carried an American cloth bag, containing articles purchased at Tonbridge, and Oxted. Photograph can be seen on application. Ho must be a trained Fireman, and able to act as Engineer, if necessary, and he • will be required to repair and keep in order all hose pipes. The successful applicant will also be appointed an Inspector in the Borough Police Force and a knowledge of police duties is essential. He will be required to devote the whole of his time to police and fire brigade duties under the direction of the Chief Constable.
