All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOB OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAED, LONDON, S. W. ' J. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted- in one issue of the POLICE UAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given. and the exact conditions be clearly stated. t. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of lbs. per portrait, and of Is. Gd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. tr. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature . of anofficcr of not less rank tnan Superintendent; and, if the name of such person berequiredto be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed hy the chief I officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed bu an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, a,. i are » alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once tranmiit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later tham noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday miming. They mutt be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Cnarmg Cross, Postal Order, or i* Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond fche number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. The following ia a copy of the order which governs the efreulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. ( 5) The conditions on which it is payable. ( o) The person by whom it will be paid. (< Q That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. S, No expression must be used in such an advertise- nwnt, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken Of disposed of, holding out any expectation that the Mward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. D.; 1 gold locket, set lapis lazuli; 1 small crystal locket; 2 ladies' gold watches; 1 gold brooch, twisted pattern; 3 gold chains ( 1 long, 2 short); 1 watch key, shape of a hand, turquoise enamel; 1 gold heart- shaped locket, with carbuncle in centre— A MAN, age 25, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion pale, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes brown; dress, dark brown coat and vest, black trousers, white collar, black silk tie, button boots, hard felt hat. 2.— E Division. — For obtaining £ 9 10s. by means of a fictitious cheque — CHARLES WRIGHT, age 27, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache very dark ; dress, blue beaver overcoat, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 3.— E Division.— For embezzling £ 4 and other sums— THOMAS HOPKINS, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair light; dressed in dark clothes. Warrant issued. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 4.— Bottisham ( County). — For assaulting a patient at the Fulbourn Asylum, on 5th Novem- ber last — WILLIAM JAMES AINSBURY, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown ; dress, dark clothing, low black felt hat. An asylum attendant; supposed native of Ireland. Has been in the Surrey Asylum, and resided at 11, Princes- street, Richmond. Is known in Dublin. Plays the cornet. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Redhouse, Bottisham. HERTFORDSHIRE. 5.— Ware ( County). — For sacrilege — HER- BERT CHEVALLIER ( supposed false), age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., clean shaved ; dress, dark blue overcoat with velvet collar, black hard felt hat, gold albert watch chain; carried a walking stick with ivoiy handle, silver band around it. His modus operandi is to apply to the church caretaker for the loan of the keys of the church, stating he has been sent by the vicar, as he wishes to take a sketch of the interior, and intends returning in a week to photograph it. ( See Case No. 27). Information to Capt. Wymer, Supt., Ware. 6. — Watford ( County). — For obtaining £ 11 10s. by means of a fictitious cheque, on 21st ulto. — FRANCIS MILES BROWN, alias FRANCIS MONTAGUE BROWN, & c. ( See Case Na. 20, 16th December last), age about 26, height o ft. 8 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark, round features; of gentlemanly appearance, and good address; dress, dark suit, short jacket, black hard felt hat. A native of Norwich. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Pearson, Watford. KENT. 7. — Sandgate ( County).— For stealing, at Elham, 12th ult.— A black ribbed cloth overcoat, a pair of gloves, a white and blue check shirt, a white flannel ditto, 1 white and 1 red cotton handkerchief, 1 white collar, and 1 pair white cotton stockings— A MAN, age 48, height 5 ft. in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes bine, scar under left eye, D tattooed on left side of right forearm, P and other marks on right forearm, five dots on wrist, ship and blue marks on left forearm ; dress, dirty white twill jacket, fustian sleeved vest, guernsey under, navvy's cap, heavy lace boots, may be wearing the stolen overcoat. Will probably seek employment as a carter. Information to Supt. Waghorn, Sandgate. LANCASHIRE. 8. — Ormskirk ( County). — For obtaining a " Phoenix Patent Alarm Cash Till" by false pre- tences— THOMAS MUDIE, age about 45, height 5 f.. 6 in., complexion fair, hair, beard and mous- tache light brown ( interspersed with grey), eyes fciue; dress, old bleck morniDg coat and vest, blue diagonal trousers ( rather tight fitting), strong lace boots with tcecaps. A Scotchman. Is supposed to have a wife and family living in Glasgow. He is a canvasser for photographic portraits for J. < fc J. Taylor, Photographers, Manchester, and the Wigan Photographic Co., Wigan; also, for " Cassell's Illus- trated FamilyBible," " Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Bible," and the " Phoenix Patent Alarm Cash Till." In the evenings he hawks cheap pictures. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jervis, Ormskirk. Appears dull and reserved. Is fond of billiards, and is believed to have given way to betting. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Duns, Leicester. LINCOLNSHIRE. 11. — Spalding ( County). — For stealing a copper furna^ ( recovered) 23rd ult.— WILLIAM ASHER, late of Grantham, age about 22, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., hair brown, clean shaved; dress, black coat, blue vest, dark cloth trousers, black hard hat ( all dirty), lace boots. Sometimes works as a drover, and with horse- slaughterers, and swinging boats. n i Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jarvis, Spalding. 12.— Lincoln ( City).— For failing to report- Supervisee HENRY REES, alias THOMAS WILSON, Office No. 44288, age 32, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, [ hair brown, eyes grey, medium build, mole back of nefck. A groom. Sentenced at Lincoln, 8ch January, 1892, to 12 months hard labour and 1 year police supervision for horse- stealing. Information to the Chief Constable, Lincoln. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 13.— Monmouth( County) .— Expiree ALFRED CROMWELL, Office No. 29619 ( Case No. 36, 19th February, 1886), not now wanted. 14.— Newport ( Borough).— For stealing from a ship, on 24th nlto.— A small gold geneva watch, No. 48952, glass deficient; a suit of black clothes; a blue- ribbed guernsey ; a federation ticket, and two discbarges in the name of " Raffaeld Tobia"— WILLIAM HANNEWALD, a German seaman, age 26, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., hair and moustache light; was wearing a peak cap and black coat. Information to Head Constable Sinclair, Newport. PEMBROKESHIRE. 15.— Haverfordwest Castle ( County).— For stealing £ 70 cash— FRANK BANFOY MERLIN, age 29, height 6 ft., complexion fresh, slightly freckled, hair ( cut short) light brown, eyes blue, upper jaw projecting, lisps slightly, walks erect, keeps his hands in trouser3 pockets ; is a great smoker; dress, fawn- colour jacket, vest, and trousers ( new), lace boots, black hard felt hat, wore a gold signet ring with initials. A clerk; native of London. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Haverford- west Castle. STAFFORDSHIRE. 16. — Wolverhampton ( Borough). — For obtaining £ 11 10s., by means of a forged cheque, on 12th ulto. — FRANCIS MILES BROWN, alias Lieutenant BROWN, RALPH HAMPSHIRE, E. MORRIS, & c., age about 26, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, round features, hair and mous- tache dark ; of gentlemanly appearance and address. In this case he called upon a tradesman, and stated that a well- known medical man desired the cheque cashed. He has been identified as the person wanted at Margate. ( See Case No. 21, 25th Nov. last.) Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Burnett, Chief Constable, Wolverhampton. SURREY. 17.— Guildford ( County). — For stealing at ibdalmiiig, 20th ult.—- 1 gold demi- bunter watch j- pcoverea), 1 Silver lever' watch, 1 silver'centre- ' decondsM^ titch, and I Canadian gold keyless watch— WALTER WITT, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion, hair, and heavy moustache dark, very upright build; dress, brown overcoat, short black jacket, dark trousers, hard felt hat. SUSSEX ( EAST). 18. — Hayward's Heath ( County). — For larceny— WILLIAM WILMER, age 50 to 55, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache light ( turning grey) ; dress, old grey jacket and vest, cord trousers, nailed boots, light cap with peak. A tramping baker; native of Cuckfield. Is supposed to be making his way through Dorking or Leatherhead, Epsom, Banstead, Sutton, and Thornton Heath. Information to Supt. Denman, Hayward's Heath. 19.— Lewes ( County). V— For deserting his wife and thjee children, leaving them chargeable to the Newhaven Union— JOHN GREEN, age 39, height 5 ft. 7f in., complexion dark, hair and whiskers black ( turning grey), eyes blue, nearly bald top of head, bracelet tattooed both wrists, church with the words " In Memory of my brother William" left arm, wear3 silver ring on left hand. A ship's fire- man ; native of Newhaven, Sussex. Warrant issued. 20.— Lewes ( County).— For stealing a cheque for £ 33 17s. 5d., on 26th ult.— JOHN WAGHORN, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers, and moustache turning grey, eyes blue, bald top of head; generally dressed in dark suit and high hat. A brewer's agent; native of Seaford, Sussex. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Coppard, Lewes. 21.— Hove ( Town).— Portrait and description of THOMAS HENRY ROGERS, clerk and collector, whose apprehension is sought for stealing £ 14, on 17th ult., age 21, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair, slight moustache, and eyes dark, black specks on face, bruise on right cheek, teeth discoloured, one front tooth broken in upper jaw, anchor tattooed on inside of one wrist, large toe on right foot stiff, walks quickly; dress, long slate- colour overcoat, dark coat and vest, dark brown tweed trousers, lace boots, black Oxford hat. A native of Leeds. Looks older than photo. Warrant issued. Information to Major Teevan, Chief Constable, Hove. WORCESTERSHIRE. 22.— Pershore ( County).— For stealing a horse ( recovered) at Evesham, on 19th ult.— A MAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair light, inclines to be sandy, small side whiskers, beard about a fortnight's growth, carries his head on one side; wore a long grey overcoat, and soft' billycock hat. Had with him a dark cob about 14 hands, short tail, supposed broken knees and wearing knee- caps, and a light spring trap with light - coloured body. Stated his name was HEMMING, and that he lived with bis- father atHinton, near Evesham { false). Information to Supt. Cope, Pershore, YORKSHIRE ( EAST RIDING). 23.— Beverley ( County).— For housebreaking and stealing a verge watch; black cloth jacket and Test; 1 pair brown cloth tronsers, battens stamped ft Fattison, Withernwick!,'.; 3. union shirta; 3 white flannel shirts ; 2 figured neckerchiefs; and £ 2 13s. cash— FRANK CLARK, age 28, height 5 ft.. 9 in., hair ( parted in centre) and moustache light browh, long narrow features, walks very erect; dress, printed moleskin jacket and vest, small brown cord trousers, dark cloth cap with ear- flaps, or may bo wearing blue pilot jacket and black felt hat. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Wood, Beverley. 24.— Bridlington ( County). — For embezzle- ment, on 13th ulto. and other dates— WALTER WALKER, late of Filey, age about 42, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, rather bloated appearance, hair, moustache, and slight side- whiskers brown ( turning grey), lost end of left forefinger, scars over both eyes ; dress, dark overcoat and undercoat and vest, light tweed trousers; had with him a port- manteau. Is well known at Wakefield, where he worked for several years with an Aerated Water Manufacturer. May now seek similar employment or at drug stores or warehouses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Winpenny, Bridlington. 25. _ Hull ( Borough). — For fraud — J. H. FOSTER, age 22 or 23, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., com- plexion sallow, hair ( cut short) light brown, eyes blue; dress, brick- colour jacket suit, very large plaid; wears a very heavy silver albert, fetter link pattern. A horse coper ; native of Leeds. This man advertises in local papers a horse or mare for sale, and sells same as sound on condition that if the animal does not suit, it is to be returned, and the money refunded. The animal will certainly be unsound, and is returned in consequence, but no money is refunded. Warrant issued. Is likely to be accompanied by Harry Holmes, another horse- coper, who is not wanted, age 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion dark, hair black, eyes hazel; of gipsy appearance ; dress, dark suit, very large plaid, blue neckerchief; wears a very heavy silver albert, fetter link pattern. Information to Captain Gurney, Chief Constable, Hull. YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING). 26. — Todmorden ( County). — For stealing, 20th ult., a £ 5 Bank of England Note, P/ 62, 92556, dated Liverpool, 28th March, 1890; £ 17 in gold; and £ 2 10s. in silver— EDITH MAUD NORMING- TON, age 16, height 5 ft. 3i in., complexion fair, hair ( about 6 in. long) brown, eyes blue, right hand deformed, having been injured by a machine, causing the thumb to turn inwards and leaving a large scar on back of hand ; dress, grey dress, black and white small check plaid shawl, fawn- coloured straw hat, turned up at back with a plait of light- brown straw in centre of brim, and trimmed with light brown feather trimming and fawn- coloured satin ribbon bow; had with her a black woollen shawl. A native of Halifax, Yorkshire, but has lived at Walsden for ten years. Information to Supt. Fearnside, Todmorden. 27.— Doncaster ( Borough). — For sacrilege, 31st ult.— A MAN, age 26 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 to 8 in., hair dark, supposed slight moustache, scar on right side of face, and dimple on chin ; dress, blue over- coat, white collar turned down at corners, black tie, black felt hat, carried a stick. He obtained possession of the keys of two churches by stating he had permission from the vicar to photograph tho interior ( false). He had apparently forced open the poor boxes by means of a screwdriver ( see Case No. 5). Information to Chief Constable Lister, Doncaster. 28. — Leeds ( Borough). — For larceny, and obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— MAYNARD, age 27 to 30, height about 5 ft. 6 in., thin build, prominent nose, " LOYE " tattooed on back of one hand ; dress, dark serge jacket suit, billycock hat, low shoes, far worn. Warrant issued. 29. — Leeds ( Borough). — For the man- slaughter of Mary Ann Nuttel, aged 3 years, on 18th ult.— JOSEPH HAND LEY, alias JO- E BROWN, age about 45, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, slight moustache, no whiskers, bald on top of head, usually combs his hair from the side over the top, prominent front teeth in upper jaw; dressed, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1893. THE POLICE GAZETTE. > 3 .• when last seen, in dirty light dust coat, light trousers, white muffler, and light- coloured cap. A hawker; may be found in some common lodging . house or workhouse. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Webb, Leeds. 30.— Doncaster ( Borough).— License Holder CHARLES TAYLOR, Office No. 38376, Case No. § 0, 27th ult., not now wanted. trousers, coat and vest, high silk hat. Appearance of a sea captain. Is believed to be a clever bank thief and wanted for similar offences. Supposed native of Canada. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 31. — Convict Supervision Depart- ment.— Woodcut portrait and description of JOHN WOOD, who pleaded guilty at the last South London Sessions to a charge of burglary, and who has been put back for sentence at the Sessions commencing 14th inst., for inquiry as to his ante- cedents ; age 69, height 5 ft. 2 in., 1 complexion fresh, hair and eyes grey, partly bald, nose slightly deformed, large wart right corner of upper lip, small wart right jaw, 2 left side face and 1 on each fore- arm, small scar bridge of nose, 2 moles on back, and 3 on breast, large head and face, stout build, slightly bow- legged. This man refuses to give any account of himself, and is supposed to be an old and expert housebreaker. 32. — Convict Supervision Depart- " ment. — Woodcut portrait and description of BEDFORDSHIRE. 34. — Bedford ( Borough). — Sentenced to 2 months imprisonment for stealing wearing apparel from her lodgings— AGNES BEDFORD, age 18, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, flat face; dress, black cloak, dark stuff dress, straw hat, trimmed with black velvet; some- times wears spectacles. She takes lodgings, stating she is a domestic servant seeking employment, also that she has just buried her father ( false). Supposed wanted for similar offences. Information to Chief Constable Thody, Bedford. DORSETSHIRE. 35.— Sturminster( CWfy).— Remanded till 6th inst., for larceny— HENRY WILSON, alias HENRY HARRIS, age 28, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, ship, cross, and blue dots tattooed on right arm, two anchors and part ot cross on left arm, dots left hand; dress, old soldier's jacket with brass buttons under light coat. A native of Bristol. Information to Inspector Burden, Sturminster. mitted for trial at the next Assizes at Maidstone, for obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— CHARLES CYRIL ACLAND, age 38, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, hair grey, side whiskers and moustache ginger ( turning grey), eyes blue ; of military appearance; dress, dark tweed coat, light brown tweed trousers, violet collar, velvet necktie, black cap with peak. A native of Bexley Heath, Kent. Was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment at West Kent Sessions at Maidstone, in January, 1885, for felony. Information to the Chief Constable, Tanbridge Wells.
