All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOU OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. ' ' Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sovght will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE OTAZETTE, \ if they sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified, k In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. fartraUs Of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, Will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. Qd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed bi/ the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. Announcements of all persons to be a^ rehended or of stolen property bear a number, a,. i ara alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZUTTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whicn mag result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be recei ved not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. • 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Cnarmg Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. (£>) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon, t. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. Note.— There are 177 Station! of the Metropolitan toliee Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— G Division. — For embezzlement — JOHN CROSSEWELL, age 37, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion ruddy, hair and moustache light brown, eyes blue, scar on bridge of nose ; dressed when last seen in light tweed overcoat or ulster, black hard felt hat. A traveller ; native of London. Warrant issued. 2.— K Division.— For embezzling £ 116s. 6d. on 21st inst.— ED WARD ALBERT PAGE, age 19, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, hair light, eyes grey; dress, brown and red check jacket and trousers, lace boots, light cloth cap. A native of High Wycombe, Bucks. Warrant issued. 3.— M Division.— Poitrait and description of JOHN EDWARD MOORE, a cashier, whose appre- billiards, frequents large billiard rooms, and spends money freely. Has in his possession a stolen cheque- book on the London and Westminster Bank, St. James's- square Branch, Nos. 406853 to 406900, 13 of which he has forged and uttered. Invariably nses one of the following names: E. J. Simpson, E. J. Spencer, E. J. Whittle, J. W. Claris, A. J. Miller, A. J. Saunders, and Russell Heyland. The cheque- book was in a gentleman's dressing bag with other articles, and was stolen from Euston j Railway Station on 21st November last. Some of the articles have been found pledged in London by the thief, who may now be operating in the provinces. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. A native of Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, where his father and brother reside. A brother - in - law resides at Mornington - road, Leytonstone. Warrant issued. 4.— S Division-— For obtaining £ 5 by means of a worthless cheque on the London and West- minster Bank— WILLIAM TURNER, alias J. W. RUSSELL HEYLAND ( Case No. 1, 9th ult.), medium age and height, complexion pale, consump- tive- looking, hollow cheeks, large, dark, restless eyes, shaky at knees, turns both feet out when walking ; dressed, when last seen, in dark waterproof mackin- tosh with cape, s^ ft felt hat. He is fond of playing 5.— E Division.— MO XT AGUE, alias JARVIS, and TEDDY MARKEE, Case No. 2, 25th September, 1891, not to be apprehended. Warrant withdrawn. CITY OF LONDON. 6.— For embezzlement — PERCY HERBERT GEORGE, late of 23, Woodstock- road, Finsbury Park, age 24, height 5 ft. 4 in., full face, hair and moustache dark, head projects at back, walks slowly - r dressod in dark clothes.' Absconded 29th November last. Warrant issued. 7.— For stealing £ 10 — GOLDEN MAXWELL, a solicitor's clerk, late of 32, Comerford- road, Brockley, Kent, age 35, height 5 ft 6 or 7 in., complexion pale, hail-, small side whiskers, and moustache dark brown, eyes hazel ; is addicted to drink ; dress, black cloth overcoat with silk facings, black undercoat and vest, dark brown striped trousers, high silk hat ( large). Has an uncle at Preston, where he may visit. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26 Old Jewry, E. C. CHESHIRE. 8.— Macclesfield ( County). — For being an absconded bankrupt— FRANCIS HOLLAND, stone and coal merchant, late of Sutton, Macclesfield, age 48, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair ( long and curly) light brown, eyes grey, full face, clean shaved; dress, dark clothes, brown overcoat, brown felt hat with flat top. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. FRIDAY, JANUARY G, 1893. two outside ; 1 dark grey cloth jacket and trousers ; 3 yards of new red flannel; 4 cotton shirts, check patterns; 1A yards of new French merino, maroon colonr; 3 pairs of women's knitted black woollen stockings; 1 silk neckerchief, red ground, drab flowers; 1 silk neckerchief, drab ground, red flowers; 1 silk neckerchief, light blue, white stripes; 1 silk nockerchief, white horse- shoe pattern ; 3 white silk neckerchiefs ; 1 black hard felt hat, size 7, maker " Burrell, Chester" ; a butcher's blue check slop; a glazier's diamond, short stem, very large stone, unmovable — JOHN RYAN or BRYAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair, moustache, and eyes dark, heavy dark eyebrows; dress, dark coat and vest, white corduroy trousers, blue cloth peak cap with band. Stated he had been a soldier, that he was discharged as an invalid from India, aud was in receipt of a pension of 8d. a- day. Expressed his intention of going to work on the Manchester Ship Canal. Information to Chief Constable Fenwick, Town Hall, Chester. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 10. — Cardiff ( Borough).— For obtaining by false pretences ( with another man in custody), the sum of £ 14 from the Scottish Legal Life Assurance Society — WILLIAM or HENRY MORGAN, a pork butcher, late of 114, Cowbridge- road, Cardiff, age 37 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair black mixed with grey, moustache and small side whiskers, eyes dark, down- cast look, pointed chin, full red lips, shows teeth slightly, has a sneering laugh, talks rapidly and with a slight Welsh accent. Walks smartly, and carries his hands in his trousers pockets. Plays skittles, and is an associate of prostitutes. Generally dressed in dark clothes. Has been a shoemaker. Absconded 19th inst. May endeavour to go abroad. Warrant issued. 11.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For stealing£ 22 19s., on 19th inst.— ARTHUR W. CROCKER, a clerk, age 53 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 6 in., rather slight build, hair dark brown, full beard and mous- tache ; is addicted to drink, walks smartly and quickly, invariably carries a walking- stick ; when . last seen he was shabbily dressed in an old frock coat, and grey mixture trousers, but may have bought new clothing. Was at one time employed by a solicitor in Cardiff. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. HAMPSHIRE. 12.— Bournemouth ( County).— For embezzle- ment H. C. MARTIN, a commission agent, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair, moustache, and slight side whiskers light brown ( inclined to be ginger), rather weak and full eyes, lisps a little ; dress, light brown suit, hard felt hat. Was for several years in the employ of a hay and straw merchant at Reading, and, until about last Christmas, in similar employment at Oxford. Is supposed to have been at Douglas- road, Canonbury, . London, a short time since. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Knapton, Bournemouth. 13.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For larceny— CHARLES DAYKINS, alias KNIGHTON, a clerk, age about 20, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion very pale, hair and eyes dark; speaks with a cockney accent; dresF, b'. ack cloth or serge jacket and vest, brown trousers, stand- up collar, dark blue tie with red stiipes running across it, black hard felt hat, button boots, several buttons missing. His modus operandi is to take lodgings, stating he is a clerk at some bank, and mentioning that a certain tradesman in London is his father. On ono occasion he gave the name of Daykins, tea dealer, St. Paul's Churchyard, and at another gave his own address as Ligudale, Burgoyne- road, Harrowgate Park, London. He sleeps in the house one night, steals whatever he can and absconds. Is supposed to be wanted for similar offences. Warrant issued. 14.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For forgery— EDWARD BIRD, alias HOWARD, age about 28, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair brown, beard ( trimmed close) and moustache red, eyes brown, peculiar lisping noise when laughing, very pleasant manner, well spoken; dressed, when last seerf, in double- breasted melton cloth overcoat, rather worn, large buttons, sack back, velvet collar, usually wears a brown, suit, and sometimes a fancy vest, dark or black ground with red pin spots, and a brown peak cap! Was accompmied by his wife aud three children : wife— age about 25, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., rather stout and well- built, complexion fair, hair ( fringed in front) dark, good- looking; dress, bine or black serge dress, long jacket, buttons down front, large red felt hat, trimmed with black material; may be wearing a dark or blue serge mantle, lined with red. Children—( 1st), a boy, age about 5, rather stout; dress, sailor suit, and overcoat with capo. ( 2nd), a girl, age about 3j, rather thin and pale; dress, dark blue dress, black or dark blue jacket, trimmed with brown fur. ( 3rd), a boy, ago about 1G months. They were also accompanied by a man who gave the name of William Helm, age about 23, height about 5 ft. 10 in., very pale face, hair supposed dark, slight brown moustache, lame in left leg and limps when walking ; speaks with a cockney accent. Stated he had been a middle- weight boxer, and had his foot injured when boxing. Their luggage consisted of 3 boxes, viz.: 1 middle size, covered with black American cloth; 1 large chest, made of teak, two drawers at bottom, with small brass knob handles ; and 1 small box. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Cosser, Town Hall, Portsmouth. 15.— Southampton ( Borough).— Forobtaining money by means of fictitious cheques on Lloyd & Co.' s Exchange and Discount Bank Company, Limited, Bradford— T. H. WADD, alias G. WEBB, age about 60, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion ruddy, hair, whiskers, and moustache brown, turning grey ; of gentlemanly appearance, but has rough hands, and dirty finger- nails; dress, long dark blue rough cloth overcoat, dark grey trousers, dark necktie, high silk hat, sometimes wears spectacles. His modus operandi is to call upon a tradesman, order goods to the value of about £ 5, and then take from his pocket three or four sovereigns, which he shows, states he has not sufficient cash to pay, and requests the tradesman to accept a cheque already made out for about £ 9, which he tears from a cheque book, draws th^ balance, and decamps. Warrant issued. 16.— Southampton ( Borough).— For abscondin g from her bail, on a charge of obtaining money by false pretences— MARY HURLEY, alias HILL, age 24, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes blue. A native of Winchester. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Berry, South- ampton. HEREFORDSHIRE. 17.— Hereford ( City).— For larceny ( lodger) — JESSIE WILLIAMS, alias ELLEN GODFREY, See., age 27, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, delicate and unhealthy appearance, hair dark brown, eyes dark, mole on left cheek, on left side of nose, two moles on right cheek ; dress, dark dress with deep red marone trimming round bottom, black felt hat, boat- shape, close fitting, trimmed with black and grey fur, long black waterproof cloak ( stolen), double front, pleated at back, brown fur round neck. A native of Fownhope, Herefordshire. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Richardson, Hereford. HERTFORDSHIRE. 18.— Hertford ( County).— Absconded from the Hertfordshire Reformatory on night of 10th inst.— HENRY BLACKFORD LUKER, age 16| ( looks older), height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair and eyes brown, scar under right eye and between left eye and ear, has two webbed toes ; dress, dark navy- blue overcoat, black diagonal jacket and vest, dark grey trousers with blue stripes, light brown peak cap. A tailor ; native of Tunbridge Wells. Information to Supt. Parish, Hertford. KENT. 19.— Chatham ( County).— For stealing £ 170, from Brompton Barracks, on 6th inst. — Lance- Corporal ERNEST VINCENT, age 30, height 5 ft. in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, small dark moustache, eyes blue, Jewish appear- ance, speaks with a drawl; dress, blue serge suit, blue overcoat with velvet collar, black hard felt hat. — ROBERT JOHN MURLEY, age 29, height 5 ft. in., complexion sallow, hair brown, small light moustache, small grey eyes,, prominent nose; supposed dressed in grey overcoat, blue serge suit. Last seen at Bromley Railway Station, London Chatham & Dover Railway, at 10 p. m., 6th inst. May attempt to go abroad. They are also wanted for deserting from the Royal Engineers, see Cases No. 151 and 200, 10th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Acting Supt. Capps, Chatham. 20.— Canterbury ( City).— For stealing, 21st inst, from farmers' traps— 2 overcoats ( found pledged) and a dark blue heavy riding overcoat ( not recovered), grey woollen lining, black bone buttons, small ticket pocket on sleeve— A man, who gave the name of JOHN WOOD, age 25 to 30, height about 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, small dark moustache. Information to Chief Constable Farmery, Canter- bury. LANCASHIRE. 21.— Bolton ( County).— For stealing, 16th inst., at Horwich, a silver geneva watch ( found pledged) ; a silver cup, " Liverpool Rifle Brigade, Private Joseph Roberts, Points 1867 " inscribed thereon ; also a lady's gold chain, very short link pattern— FREDERICK ROBERTS, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, slight moustache and side whiskers, dirty appearance ; dress, dark diagonal striped coat, stripes £ inch wide, another coat under, dark cloth vest and trousers, billycock hat, boots. A marine engineer, supposed native of Liverpool. May have gone to Wolverhampton or Liverpool. Information to Supt. Leeming, Bolton. 22. — Rochdale ( Borough). — For stealing wearing apparel ( partly recovered), from a dwelling- house, between 30th ult. and 4th inst.— GEORGE CLAYTON, alias JOHN or GEORGE SMITH, and JAMES or WILLIAM FIELDEN, age about 33, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair light brown, slight light moustache, eyes blue, slight cast in one, cut mark left wrist, warts ou each hand; dress, black coat and vest, brown cord trousers, brown billycock hat, clogs. A minder or spinner; native of Macclesfield.— EMMA NORTON, alias ANNIE BRIERLEY, SMITH, HAMER, and ELLA FIELDEN, age about 32, height 5 ft., stout build, complexion fresh, full face, hair dark, small lump on left side of mouth; is far advanced in pregnancy; dress, brown dress, blue bodice, light plaid shawl over head, black- and- red plaid shoulder shawl. They were accompanied by a boy named Horatio or Leonard, age about 7, complexion fair, hair light; dress, brown cord knicker suit, peak cap. They are also wanted at Oldham, Stockport, Glossop, Leigh, & c. Information to Chief Constable Wilkinson, Roch- dale. 23.— Salford ( Borough).— For embezzlement— ROBERT INGLIS MUIRHEAD, age 28, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair black, moustache and side whiskers, flat- footed, walks rather stiff- legged. A clerk ; native of Lanarkshire. Absconded 16th November last. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Salford. LEICESTERSHIRE. 24.— Leicester ( Borough).— For stealing £ 58, on 13th iast.— JOSEPH BUXTON, a clerk, age 33, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, hair and slight moustache light brown, otherwise clean shaved; dress, blue cloth overcoat with dark velvet collar, dark tweed suit, black deerstalker hat, turn- down collar, dark tie. Appears dull and reserved. Is fond of billiardB, and is believed to have given way to betting. Warrant issued. 25.— Leicester ( Borough).— For bigamy, on 20th October last— JOHN' or JACK HENDIN, age 27, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair ( curly) brown, slight light brown moustache, other- wise clean shaved, eyes ( deep set) blue; well educated, and of smart gentlemanly appearance; well dressed. Was formerly a clerk in the Civil Service ( Ordnance Survey), and was stationed at Southampton up to about August last. Is supposed to be a native of Southampton. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Duns, Leicester. FBIDAY, J ANUARY 27, 1893. THE POLICE GAZETTE, ft LINCOLNSHIRE. 26.— Alford ( County').— For stealing, as bailee, the sum of £ 29 Gs. 43., 011 29th February last— WILLIAM HENRY JONES, a clerk in Holy Orders, of Mumby- cum- Chapel, near Aiford, age abont 45, height about 5 ft. 7 in., rather stout, stiff build, broad shouldered, rather short neck, com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, beard ( cut Vandyke) and whiskers auburn, heavy moustache. Is very affable and bland in his manners. Left Mumby Rectory about a fortnight since, when he was dressed in a clerical suit. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wood, Alford. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 27.— Newport ( Borough).— For stealing from a ship, on 24th in? t.— A small gold geneva watch, No. 48952, glass deficient; a suit of black clothes; a blue- ribbed guernsey; a federation ticket, and two discbarges in the name of " Raffaeld Tobia"— WILLIAM HANNEWALD, a German seaman, age 2t>, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., hair and moustache light; was wearing a peak cap and black coat. Information to Head Constable Sinclair, Newport. OXFORDSHIRE. 28.— Henley- on- Thames ( County). — For attempting to carnally kuow a girl under the age of 13 years, on 28th November last — WILLIAM POFFLEY, age 49, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion ( inclined to be blotchy) fresh, hair brown ( turning grey), clean shaved, eyes blue, cut scar on back of left hand ; dress, dark coat, black band round right sleeve, dark vest, shepherd's plaid trousers, black hard felt hat. A bricklayer; native of Henley- on Thames. He is well known to travellers, having kept the Red Lion lodging- house, Henley, for the past ten years. He was arrested on the above charge, remanded on bail, but failed to appear. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Keal, Henley- on- Thames. SOMERSETSHIRE. 29.— llminster ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings— 2 gold riDgs ( recovered); a blue cloth overcoat, lined with small red and plaid material; a light red muffler, mixture of silk and cotton; and a black bowler hat — JOSEPH TAYLOR, age abont 44, height 5 ft. 7 in., co plexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, scar on right side of neck, Indian woman wearing head dress of feathers tattooed on right forearm, man stripped with glomes on in the attitude of toxiDg on left forearm ; dress, drab slop, lining burnt near shoulder, light cloth vest, green cord trousers, heavy lace boots, left one cut near big toe; may be wearing the stolen overcoat, muffler, and hat, A native of West Chinnock, Somersetshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Rawlings, Ilminster. SUFFOLK. 31.— Halesworth ( County).— For obtaining £ 388 10s. by means of forged deeds purporting to relate to property in Anchor Street, Chelmsford ( property unknown)— A man, who gave the name of JAMES CHARLES BOND ( supposed false), age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, no whiskers or moustache, wore a pair of steel- rimmed spectacles, with large size glasses; dress, dark cloth coat, vest, and trousers, black hard felt hat. Stated he was a grocer of Chelmsford ( false). Is supposed to be well acquainted with the working of a solicitor's office, as the forged deeds are drawn up in faultless style. May be known in Oxfordshire, as the name of a lady living at B- impton is forged on one of the deeds. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. FORBES, ROBERTSON, & c., age 45 to 50, height5 ft. 11 in., weight about 13£ stone, complexion muddy, hair ( baldontopof bead), and rather heavy moustache dark, eyes dark, reddish nose, hands hard and brown ; is addicted to drink ; speaks with a decided Scotch accent; military appearance ; dress, over- coat ( supposed dark blue), thick greyish brown Scotch tweed suit. A native of Aberdeen, where he once served as sheriff's officer; also in 1886, as a book canvasser, both to the firm of Blackie & Son, and for Mr. W. Mackenzie. Served in the Royal Artill ry, in Egypt, in 1880, and purchased his discharge. Was, in 1883, a member of the Alexan- dria Police Force. Is a man of good address and a clever swindler with a very fertile imagination. Understands machinery, & c. Has passed himself off as a banker. Is well known in the Northern counties of Scotland. Was convicted at Aberdeen, on 9th June, 1877, and 18th June, 1878 ; at Glasgow on 28th February, 1885; and at Nairn on 18th October, 1887. This man called on a firm of agricultural imple- ment makers, on 28th ult., and gave an order for several hundred pounds worth of machinery, paying for what was ready for immediate delivery with a cheque written on plain paper, for £ 178 16s., drawn by George Forbes, on the Wick Branch of the National Bank of Scotland. There is no Wick Branch, and the drawer is unknown at the head office. Before leaving, he stated he had not sufficient money to carry him home to Wick, in Scotland, and so obtained £ 7 for that purpose. Warrant issued. Information to Lt.- Col. This man calls upon publicans, stating he is agent for Nettleship & Co., 35, Varden- street, Commercial- road, London, " Stramonium Manufac- turers," who are introducing a non- tobacco cigarette, and require district agents to sell the cigarettes by means of an automatic machine, which is to stand at. the door, and for which rent will be paid, but that it is their rule to obtain payment for the cigarettes in advance, when the machine will be forwarded. By tkese representations he succeeds in obtaining payment for the cigarettes, which afterwards turn out to be worthless. There is no such firm known at the above address as Nettlesbip & Co.
