Every armeuncement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer efnot. less rank than Superintendent; ana, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, end no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of pe/ ice, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. Announcements of all persons to be 6+ prehended or of stolen property bear a number, a.. d am alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted til the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whic/ i may resw't from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forxarded so as to be received not later than HOOK on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanicd by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Cnarmg Cross, Postal Order, or >• Stamps. 13. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the eirculation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering » reward for the discovery of property or the detection of srime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( à) The amount of the reward. ( á) The conditions on which it is payable. ( o) The person by whom it will be paid. ( rf) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. t. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— S Division. — For stealing a dog, on 10th ult.— JAMES GOODE, age 60, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresb, long thin face, hair grey, no whiskers or moustache, aquiline nose ; dress, drab covert coat, light tweed tight- fitting trousers, grey slouch hat. He is a notorious dog dealer, and may be found in the company of dog fanciers, boxing and betting men. A native of London. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 2.— For stealing £ 10 — GOLDEN MAXWELL, a solicitor's clerk, late of 32, Comerford- road, Brockley, Kent, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion pale, hair, small side whiskers, and moustache dark brown, eyes hazel ; is addicted to drink; dress, black cloth overcoat with silk facings, black undercoat and vest, dark brown striped trousers, high silk hat ( large). Has an uncle at Preston, where he may visit. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. ANGLESEY. 3.— Holyhead { County). — For burglary and stealing a heavy dark grey overcoat, and silk umbrella. ( Case No. 33, 13th inst.) — A MAN, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fair, hair ( bald on front) brown, eyes dark, lost one or two teeth front upper jaw, and has two filled in with white gutta- percha; dressed in stolen over- coat, dark tweed coat, dark vest, dark tweed trousers with fly front and that from the upper part buttoning across his thighs, blue cap with peak, hooked down. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Davies, Holyhead. CHESHIRE. 5.— Runcorn ( County). — For obtaining milk to the value of ±' 15, by false pretences, between 8th and 27th ult. — JOHN JAMES TAYLOR, milk purveyor, age 45, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers, and moustache dark, turning grey, eyes grey, nose deformed, as if having been broken. He resided for the last 3 months at Stockport. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Atherton, Runcorn. BERKSHIRE. 4. — Wantage ( County). — For stealing, 4th inst.— 3 men's black diagonal coats, and 3 vests, sizes 4 and 5— A woman who gave the name of . JOHNSON, age 40 to 45, tall and dark, supposed mark under left eye; dress, dark shawl, black dress, black hat; sometimes wears a Paisley shawl. She calls on drapers, outfitters, & c., and asks to be allowed to take clothing for her husband's inspection, giving an address close to the shop. Has committed similar offences in other towns. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Robotham, Wantage. DURHAM- 6.— Durham ( City). — For stealing from his lodgings, 11th inst.— A silver lever watch, gold hands, yellow- coloured dial, 47 first two figures of No., a steel albert attached— HENRY YALLANCE, alias WILLIAM COLLINS, age 24, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, no whiskers or- moustache, eyes grey, rather large nose; bracelet tattooed on right wrist, ten blue spots outside left arm, H. V. | W. C. on back of left hand ; dress, light jacket and vest, grey striped trousers, blue necker- chief, b'ack felt hat. A sailor or ship's cook; native of Sunderland. He served for a short pericd in the Royal Artillery, in 1887. Stated he had been < o sea fjr about 3 years, and had recently arrived from Southampton. Has been convicted at South Shields, Hartlepool, Middlesbro', Newcastle- on- Tyne, Castle Eden, and Houghton- le- Spring for similar offences. May endeavour to enlist in some militia regiment. Information to Chief Constable Smith, Durham. ESSEX. 7. — Southend ( County). — For stealing a yacht, & c. ( since recovered at Rainham, Kent), on 18th ult.— J. MARSHALL, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion swarthy, hair brown, slight dark moustache, no whiskers, eyes hazel; dress, brownish monkey jacket/ black trousers, black cloth cap with peak of same material. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hawtree, Southend. 8.— Colchester ( Borough).— For larceny ( till), at a Post Office— A MAN, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 11 in., complexion swarthy, hair and moustache dark brown, no whiskers, very white hands ; wore a large signet ring with green stones on left little finger; dress, dark brown check ulster with cape, brown cap, white tie. Information to Chief Constable Coombs, Col- chester. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 9.— Pontypridd ( Coutity). — For embezzling £ 37 lis. lid., on 3rd October last— EDWARL) ADAMS, age 45, height 5 ft, 9 in, stout build, 2 T H E POLICE GAJZF. TTE. FRIDAY, JANUARY G, 1893. complexion, whiskers, and moustache dark, very long nose, stoops a little when walking. A native of Methly, :: ear Castleford, Yorkshire ; works as a repairer in collieries. Has worked at Hollington, Byewater Collierv, and Balsis Colliery, Yorkshire. His mother lives in London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Pontypridd. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 10.— Fishponds { County). — For failing to report— Supervisee WILLIAM BRITTON, Office No. 41946, age 21, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, 2 scars on rt arm and 1 on first left finger, W outside right and 9. E. and 1. S. ( faint) outside left forearm, varicose veins right leg. Sentenced at Gloucester, 7th January, 1891, to 9 months hard labour and 3 years police supervision for fowl stealing. 12— 630. HAMPSHIRE. 11.— Lyndhurst { County).— For obtaining by false pretences, 9th inst.— An 18- carat gold ring, plain shank and shoulders, finished dead with single good- sized diamond, set nearly flush in a star; an 18 - carat bright gold ring, pierced shoulders, diamond mounted in raised setting; an 18- carat plain bright gold ring with diamond in gipsy setting ; and a pair of new lace boots, broad toes with toe- caps — A man who gave the namo of SPENCER NELSON, age about 35, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, hair and heavy mous- tache light brown ; of gentlemanly appearance and address ; dress, brown waterproof overcoat, black or dark blue trousers, black hard felt hat. This man gave the name of a lady residing in the neighbourhood, stating he was on a visit to her, and wished to take the rings to show, as he was to make her a present of one, and would return the other two on the following day, when he would pay for the one selected. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Lyndhurst. 12.— Portsmouth { Borough).— For stealing, between 8th and 12th inst., a double- breasted blue melton cloth louDge jacket, hip pockets with flaps, one outside breast and one inside breast pocket, black bone buttons, light check lining in sleeves, nearly new and well made— A man, who gave the name of WILLIAM McKENZIE MONTEITH, age about 29, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair ( very thick and parted on right side) and moustache light, scar over right eye, one tooth defi- cient in upper jaw, is deaf, wears glasses; dret, s, black overcoat with fur collar and cuffs, grey and black striped trousers, black hard felt hat, white turn- down collar, dark silk tie ( rather large bow), low shoes. Is supposed to be wearing the stolen coat. Stated he had been a draper's assistant, and professes to delineate character, and to be very religious. Is in the habit of attending Young Men's Christian Association meetings, and occa- sionally preaches. Warrant issued. 13.— Portsmouth { Borough).— For larceny— CHARLES DAYKINS, alias KNIGHTON, a clerk, age about 20, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion very pale, hair and eyes dark; speaks with a cockney accent; dress, black cloth or serge jacket and vest, brown trousers, stand- up collar, dark blue tic with red stripes running across it, black hard felt hat, button boots, several buttons missing. His modus operandi is to take lodgings, stating he is a clerk at some bank, and mentioning that a certain tradesman in London is his father. On one occasion he gave the name of Daykins, tea dealer, St. Paul's Churchyard, and at another gave his own address as Ligndale, Burgoyne- road, Harrowgate Park, London. He sleeps in the house one night, steals whatever he can and absconds. Is supposed to be wanted for similar offences. Warrant issued. 14.— Portsmouth { Borough).— For forgery— EDWARD BIRD, alias HOWARD, age about 28, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair brown, beard ( trimmed close) and moustache red, eyes brown, peculiar lisping noise when laughing, very pleasant manner, well spoken; dressed, when last seen, in double- breasted melton cloth overcoat, rather worn, large buttons, sack back, velvet collar, usually wears a brown suir, and sometimes a fancy vesi, dark or black ground with red pin spots, and a brown peak cap. Was accompanied by his wife aud three children : wife— age about 25, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., rather stout and well- built, complexion fair, hair ( fringed in front) dark, good- looking; dress, bine or black serge dress, long jacket, buttons down front, large red felt hat, trimmed with black material; may be wearing a dark or blue serge mantle, lined with red. Children—( 1st), a boy, age about 5, rather stout; dress, sailor suit, and overcoat with cape. ( 2nd), a girl, age about 3^, rather thin and pale; dress, dark blue dress, black or dark blue jacket, trimmed with brown fur. ( 3rd), a boy, ago about 16 months. They were also accompanied by a man who gave the name of William Helm, age about 23, height about 5 ft. 10 in., very pale face, hair supposed dark, slight brown moustache, lame in left leg and limps when walking ; speaks with a cockney accent. Stated he had been a middle- weight boxer, aud had his foot injured when boxing. Their luggage consisted of 3 boxes, viz.: 1 middle size, covered with black American cloth; 1 large che& t, made of teak, two drawers at bottom, with small brass knob handles ; and 1 small box. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Cosser, Town Hall, Portsmouth. HEREFORDSHIRE. 15.— Hereford { City).— For larceny { lodger) — JESSIE WILLIAMS, alias ELLEN GODFREY, & c., ago 27, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, delicate and unhealthy appearance, hair dark brown, eyes dark, mole on left cheek, on left side of nose, two moles on right cheek ; dress, dark dress with deep red marone trimming round bottom, black felt hat, boat- shape, close fitting, trimmed with black and grey fur, long black waterproof cloak ( stolen), double front, pleated at back, brown fur round neck. A native of Fownhope, Herefordshire. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Richardson, Hereford. HERTFORDSHIRE. 16.— Hertford { County).— Absconded from the Hertfordshire Reformatory on night of 10th inst.— HENRY BLACKFORD LUICER, age 16| ( looks older), height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair and eyes brown, scar under right eye and between left eye and ear, has two webbed toes ; dress, dark navy- blue overcoat, black diagonal jacket and vest, dark grey trousers with blue stripes, light brown peak cap. A tailor ; native of Tunbridge Wells. Information to Supt. Parish. Hertford. KENT. 17.— Chatham { County).— For stealing £ 170, from Brompton Barracks, on 6th inst. — Lance- Corporal ERNEST VINCENT, age 30, height 5 ft. in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, small dark moustache, eyes blue, Jewish appear- ance, speaks with a drawl ; dress, blue serge suit, blue overcoat with velvet collar, black hard felt hat. — ROBERT JOHN MURLEY, age 29, height 5 ft. 9^ in., complexion sallow, hair brown, small light moustache, small grey eyes, prominent nose; supposed dressed in grey overcoat, blue serge suit. Last seen at Bromley Railway Station, London Chatham & Dover Railway, at 10p. m., 6th inst. May attempt to go abroad. They are also wanted for deserting from the Royal Engineers, see Cases No. 151 and 200, 10th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Acting Supt. Capps, Chatham. LANCASHIRE. 18.— Bolton { County).— For stealing, 16th inst., at Horwich, a silver geneva watch ( found pledged) ; a silver cup, " Liverpool Rifle Brigade, Private Joseph Roberts, Points 1867 " inscribed thereon; also a lady's gold chain, very short link pattern— FREDERICK ROBERTS, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, slight moustache and side whiskers, dirty appearance ; dress, dark diagonal striped coat, stripes £ inch wide, another coat under, dark cloth vest and trousers, billycock hat, boots. A marine engineer, supposed native of Liverpool. May have gone to Wolverhampton or Liverpool. Information to Supt. Leeming, Bolton. 19.— Bootle { County).— For failing to report— License Holder JOHN PETERSON, alias JOHN SUTTON, Office No. 44050, age 60, height 5 ft. 5 in, complexion fresh, hair brown ( turning grey), eyes grey, 1st joint of 1st right finger deformed, lost part of 3rd left finger ( 2nd joiDt), scar on nose ( between eyes), on knuckle of 2nd right finger, and right shin. Sentenced at Liverpool, 15th January, 1889, to 5 years penal servitude for fraud. Licensed 9th ult. F J P 264. Information to Supt. Walsh, Bootle 20.— Old Trafford { County).— For stealing a horse ( recovered), at Clifton, on 2nd inst.— TWO MEN : 1st, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., com- plexion fair, walks badly; is wearing large blue military overcoat. Was recently employed at Sanger's Circus, Manchester. 2nd, height about 5 ft. 5 in., clean shaved, rather sharp features; appearance of a hawker. Information lo Supt. Bent, Old Trafford. 21.— Liverpool { City).— For failing to report— License Holder PATRICK SULLIVAN, alias CHARLES REYNOLDS, ROBERT WILLIAMS, and SMITH, Office No. 44068, age 30, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, full- rigged ship on chest, anchor right arm, bracelet each wrist. Sentenced at Hants Assizes, 23rd April, 1887, to 5 years penal servitude for larceny { person), and at Manchester, 21st April last, to 6 month's hard labour, 2 years police super- vision, and license revoked for larceuy. Sentenced at Manchester, 23rd November, 1888, to 5 years penal servitude and 3 years police supervision for larceny ( person). Licensed 26th August, 1892. License Holder MARY RILEY, alias CATHE- RINE HARVEY, Office No. 43775, age 48, height 4 ft. 11 in., complexion sallow, hair sandy, eyes hazel, scars left side face ( between eye and ear), outside forehead, aud on each shin, varicose veins left leg, lost all top teeth. Supervisee THOMAS McGLYNN, alias JAMES McDONALD, Office No. 43809, age 31, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair turning grey, eyes blue, scars each side of forehead, outside corner of right eye, left shoulder blade, and 2 outside right forearm, mole right temple, cross inside left fore- arm. Sentenced at Manchester, 16th April, 1891, to 18 months hard labour and 3 years police super- vision for larceny { person). Supervisee MARY ELLEN KIRK, Office No. 42370, age 44, height 4 ft. 10^ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, abscess scar right cheek, and small scar bridge of nose, lame left leg. Sentenced at Manchester, 9th Oct., 1890, to 15 months hard labour and 3 years police super- vision for larceny.— Supervisee HENRY HOG- GARD, Office No. 40487, age 43, height 5 ft. 3± in., complexion dark, hair brown, eyes brown, 2 scars left cheek, one back of neck, left eyebrow and out- side left thigh and knee. Sentenced at Manchester, 6th Feb., 1890, to 9 months hard labour and 3 years police supervision for larceny.— License Holder ALFRED WATERS, alias EDWARD TWYMER, and RICHD. JACKSON, age 33, height 5ft. in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, scars left side of head, back of left hand, side of left ankle, left side stomach, and large scald scar side of navel. Sentenced at Manchester, 15th Aug., 1887, to 5 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision for larceny. Licensed 14th July, 1892, J N 400. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 3 23. — Rochdale ( Borough). — For stealing] wearing apparel ( partly recovered), from a| dwelling- house, between 30th nit. and 4th inst.— GEORGE CLAYTON, alias JOHN or GEORGE SMITH, and JAMES or WILLIAM FIELDEN, age about 33, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair light brown, slight light moustache, eyes blue, slight cast in one, cut mark left wrist, warts on each hand ; dress, black coat and vest, brown cord trousers, brown billycock hat, clogR. A minder or spinner; native of Macclesfield.— EMMA NORTON, alias ANNIE BRIERLEY, SMITH, HAMER, and ELLA FIELDEN, age about 32, height 5 ft., stout build, complexion fresh, full face, hair dark, small lump on left side of mouth ; is far advanced in pregnancy ; dregs, brown dress, blue bodice, light plaid shawl over head, blaek- and- red plaid shoulder shawl. They were accompanied by a boy named Horatio or Leonard, age about 7, complexion fair, hair light; dress, brown cord knicker suit, peak cap. They are also wanted at Oldham, Stockport, Glossop, Leigh, & c. Information to Chief Constable Wilkinson, Roch- dale. 24.— Salford ( Borough).— For embezzlement— ROBERT INGLIS MUIRHEAD, age 28, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair black, moustache and side whiskers, flat- footed, walks rather stiff- legged. A clerk ; native of Lanarkshire. Absconded 16th November last. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Salford. LEICESTERSHIRE. 25.— Leicester ( Borough).— For bigamy, on 20th October last— JOHN or JACK HENDIN, age 27, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair ( curly) brown, slight light brown moustache, other wise clean shaved, eyes ( deep set) bine; well educated, and of smart gentlemanly appearance; well dressed. Stated he was a grocer of Chelmsford ( false). Is supposed to be well acquainted with the working of a solicitor's office, as the forged deeds are drawn up in faultless style. A native of Aberdeen, where he once served as sheriff's officer; also in 1886, as a book canvasser, both to the firm of Blackie & Son, and for Mr. W. Mackenzie. Served in the Royal Artill ry, in Egypt, in 1880, and purchased his discharge. Was, in 1883, a member of the Alexan- dria Police Force. Is a man of good address and clever swindler with a very fertile imagination Understands machinery, & c. Has passed himself off as a banker. Is well known in the Northern counties of Scotland. Was convicted at Aberdeen on 9th June, 1877, and 18th June, 1878; at Glasgow on 28th February, 1885; and at Nairn on 18th October, 1887. This man called on a firm of agricultural imple ment makers, on 28th ult., aud gave an order for several hundred pounds worth of machinery, paying for what was ready for immediate delivery with a cheque written on plain paper, for £ 178 16s., drawn by George Forbes, on the Wick Branch of the National Bank of Scotland. There is no Wick Branch, and the drawer is unknown at the head office. Before leaving, he stated he had not sufficient money to carry him home to Wick, in Scotland, and so obtained £ 7 for that purpose. Warrant issued. Information to Lt.- Col. By these representations he succeeds in obtaining payment for the cigarettes, which afterwards turn out to be worthless. There is no such firm known at the above address as Nettleship & Co. States he is a draper, aud that he belongs to Truro. Had in his possession a new pocket knife with pearl handlp, several blades and appliances, in case marked " Thos. Renshaw & Son, Sheffield"; a similiar knife with tortoiseshell handle; a small common two- bladed knife witb pearl handle; and a new cigar cutter with tortoiseshell handle— supposed stolen. His modus operandi is to nail upon rag merchants and others, representing himself to be the agent for some large paper manufacturer, agree to pay ex- orbitant prices for rag*, & c., draw a commission, or obtain money by worthless cheques which are generally written on blank paper. When arrested he had one of these cheques for £ 5, dated January 5th, 1893, on Lloyd's Banking Co. Limited, Cardiff, and signed Thomas Owen. Has undergone 18 months imprisonment for fraud at Leicester. It has been ascertained that between April, 1892, and 6th inst,., he committed offences such as absconding without paying hotel bills, and obtaining goods and money by frand at Peterborough, Sheffield, Manchester, Retford, Carlisle, Ulverston, Lincoln, and London.
