Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, tf they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. fart iculars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. k In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for t\ e payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. t. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15*. per fortrait, and of Is. ( id. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by thesignature of an officer of Hot less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to he inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. X. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank 11 ~> Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be c+ rrehendei or of stolen property bear a number, a,. i or* alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request f or insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whio/ i may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so at to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They mutt be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotlaml Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond $ Co.," Post Office Order payable at Cnaring Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable. ( o) The person by whom it will be paid. ( rf) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. t. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to pioperty stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. BERKSHIRE. 3.— Wantage ( County). — For stealing, 4th inst.—- 3 men's black diagonal coats, and 3 vests, sizes 4 and 5— A woman who gave the name- of JOHNSON, age 40 to 45, taU_ and dark, supposed mark under left eye; dress, dark shawl" black dress, black hat; sometimes wears a Paisley shawl. She calls on drapers, outfitters, & c„ and asks to be allowed to take clothing for her husband's inspection, giving an address close to the shop. Has committed similar offences in other towns. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Robotham, Wantage. CHESHIRE. 4.— Runcorn ( County). — For obtaining milk to the value of £ 15, by false pretences, between 8th and 27th7ult. — JOHN JAMES TAYLOR, milk purveyor,_ age 45, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers, and moustache dark, turning grey, eyes grey, nose deformed, as if having been broken. He resided foi the last 3 months at Stockport. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Atherton, Runcorn. ESSEX. 5. — Southend ( County). — For stealing a yacht, & c. ( since recovered at Raiuham, Kent), on 18th ult.— J. MARSHALL, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion swarthy, liair brown, slight dirk moustache, no whiskers, eves hazsl; dress, brownish monkey jacket, black trousers, black cloth cap with peak of same material. Wairant issued. Informat; on to Supt. Hawtree, Southend. HAMPSHIRE. 0.— Portsmouth ( Borough). — For larceny— CHARLES DAYKINS, alias KNIGHTON, a clerk, ago about 20, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion very pale, hair and eyes dark; speaks with a cockney accent; dress, black cloth or serge jacket and vest, brown trousers, stand- np collar, dark blue tie with red stiipes running across it, black hard felt bat, button boots, Several buttons missing. His modus operandi is to take lodgings, stating he is a clerk at some bank, and mentioning that a i certain tradesman in London is his father. On one occasion he gave the name of Daykins, tea dealer, St. Paul's Churchyard, and at another gave his own address as Ligndale, Burgoyne- road, Harrowgate Park, London. He sleeps in the house one night,, steals whatever he can and absconds. Is supposed to be wanted for similar offences. Warrant issued. 7.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For forgery— EDWARD BIRD, alias HOWARD, age about 28, height 5 ft. H or 7 in., complexion fair, hair brown, beard ( trimmed close) and moustache red, eyes brown, peculiar lisping noise when laughing, very pleasant manner, well spoken; dressed, when last- seen, in double- breasted melton cloth overcoat, rather worn, large button ® , sack back, velvet collar, usually wears a brown suit, and sometimes a fancy vest, dark or black ground with red pin spots, and a brown peak cap. Was accompanied by his wife aud three children : wife— age about 25, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., rather stout and well- built, complexion fair, hair ( fringed in front) dark, good- looking; dress, blue or black serge dress, long jacket, buttons down front, large red felt hat, trimme' 1 with black material; maybe wearing a dark or blue serge mantle, lined with red. Children—( 1st), a boy, age about 5, rather stout;. dress, sailor suit, and overcoat with cape. ( 2nd), a girl, age about 3i. rather thin and pale; dress, dark blue dress, black or dark blue jacket, trimmed with brown fur. ( 3rd), a boy, ago about 16 months. They were also accompanied by a man who gave the name of William Helm, age about 23, height about 5 ft. 10 in., very pale face, hair supposed dark, slight brown moustache, lame in left leg and limps when walking; speaks with a cockney accent. Stated he had been a middle- weight boxer, and had his foot injured when boxing. Their luggage consisted of 3 boxes, viz.: 1 middle size, covered with black American cloth; 1 large chest, made of teak, two drawers at bottom, with small brass knob handles ; and 1 small box. HENRY BLACKFORD LUKER, age 16 § ( looks older), height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, bair and eyes brown, scar under right eye and between left eye and ear, lias two webbed toes ; dress, dark navy- blue overcoat, black diagonal jacket and vest, dark grey trousers with blue stripes, light brown peak cap. A tailor ; native of Tunbridge Wells. Information to Supt. Parish, Hertford. KENT. '•'•— Chatham ( County). — For stealing £ 170, from Brompton Barracks, on 6th inst. — Lance- Corporal ERNEST VINCENT, age 30, height 5 ft. in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, small dark moustache, eyes blue, Jewish appear- ance, speaks with a drawl; dress, blue serge suit, blue overcoat with velvet collar, black hard felt hat. — ROBERT JOHN MURLEY, age 29, height 5 ft. in , complexion sallow, hair brown, small light moustache, small grey eyes, prominent nose; supposed dressed in grey overcoat, blue serge suit. Last seen at Bromley Railway Station, London Chatham & Dover Railway, at 10 p. m., 6th inst. May attempt to go abroad. They are also wanted for deserting from the Royal Engineers, see Cases No. 151 and 200, 10th inst. ' Warrant issued. Information to Acting Supt. Capps, Chatham. CURLEY, Office No. 43843, Case 93,4th Nov., 1892, not now wanted. 11.— Old Trafford ( County).— For stealing a horse ( recovered), at Clifton, on 2nd inst.— TWO MEN : 1st, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., com- plexion fair, walks la- lly; is wearing large blue military overcoat. Was recently employed at Sanger's Circus, Manchester. 2nd, height about 5 ft. 5 in., clean shaved, rather sharp features; appearance of a hawker. Information to Supt. Bent, Old Trafford. 12.— Wigan ( County).— For failing to report— License Holder WM. TOMLINSON, alias JOHN HOLT, Office No. 42854, age 43, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, scars on right ear, left side scalp, outside left forearm, 2 outside right elbow, 1 on each shin, and left knee, blue marks outside left forearm, back of right hand, and left side neck. Sentenced at Salford, 9th July, 1888, to 5 years penal servitude and 7 years police snpe- vision for larceny. O 293. Information to Sopt. IS.— llminster ( County).— For stealing from his lodgings— 2 gold rings ( recovered); a blue cloth overcoat, lined with small red and plaid material; a light red muffler, mixture of silk and cotton; and a black bowler hat — JOSEPH TAYLOR, age about 44, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, scar on right side of neck, Indian woman wearing head- dress of feathers tattooed on right forearm, man stripped withglofes on in the attitude of boxing on left forearm ; dress, drab slop, lining burnt near shoulder, light cloth vest, green cord trousers, heavy lace boots, left one cut near big toe ; may be wearing the stolen overcoat, muffler, and hat, A native of West Chinnock, Somersetshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Rawlings, Ilminster. STAFFORDSHIRE. 19. — Burton - on - Trent ( County). — For stealing from his lodgings, on 19th ult. and 4th inst.— A lady's silver geneva watch, No. 464614, chased back, nearly new; a gentleman's silver geneva watch, " C. C." scratched inside case • THOMAS JOHNSON, alias GEORGE CART- WRIGHT, and CARTER, age 28, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, ha^ r. and moustache dark brown, no whiskers, cut on cneek, recent injury to right eye, and may be wearing a bandage over it; dress, short blue overcoat, double- breasted, velvet collar, blue serge coat and vest, dark corduroy trousers, white collar, black tie, black hard hat, light lace boots. A native of Derby. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Gilbride, Burton- on- Trent. SUFFOLK. 20.— Ipswich ( Borough).— For larceny ( trick) — GEORGE FORBES ( supposed false), age about 45, height 5 ft. 11 in., square build, weight about 13- j stone, complexion swarthy, hair and rather heavy moustache dark, turning grey, other- wise clean shaved, eyes dark, reddish nose, hands hard and brown; speaks with a decided Scotch accent; military appearance ; dress, overcoat ( sup posed dark blue), thick greyish brown Scotch tweed suit. Stated he had been two years in Egypt. This man called on a firm of agricultural imple- ment makers, on 28th ult., and gave an order for several hundred pounds worth of machinery, paying for what was ready for immediate delivery with a cheque written on plain paper, for £ 178 16s., drawn by George Forbes, on the Wick Branch of the National Bank of Scotland. There is no Wick Branch, and the drawer is unknown at the head office. Before leaving, he stated he had not sufficient money to carry him home to Wick, in Scotland, and so obtained £ 7 for that purpose. Warrant issued. Information to Lt.- Col. SURREY. 21.— Dorking ( County).— For stealing, 1st inst. — A lady's small gold open- face geneva watch, small silver chain attached; a lady's small silver open- face geneva watch, small gold chain attached ; and a small gold brooch— A MAN, age about 23, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair and slight mous- tache dark, eyes blue ; dress, black overcoat, black diagonal coat and vest, brown striped trousers, hard felt hat, light boots ; carried a walking- stick with silver knob. Information to Supt. Collis, Dorking. 22.— Guildford ( Borough). — For embezzling £ 42 6s. Id.— WILLIAM HENRY WARNE, age about 33, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion, hair, moustache, and eyes dark; speaks with a broad accent; dress, dirk suit, black hard felt hat; rather shabby appearance. A native of Southampton. Absconded 24th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Worlock, Guild- ford. WESTMORELAND. 23.— Appleby ( County).— For larceny ( bailee) of a lady's gold- plated geneva watch, No. 1296, No. 80395 on case - JOSEPH ROBINSON, age 38, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion, hair and moustache dark, eyes brown ; dress, brown check or black serge coat, black or brown trouser?, hard felt hat, lace boots. A native of Keswick, Cumberland. Has served in the 5th Dragoon Guards, and is now in the Army Reserve. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Graham, Appleby. WILTSHIRE. 24. — Chippenham ( County). — For fowl- stealing— JAMES DICKS, age 25, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue. A chimney sweep ; native of Paulshot, Wiltshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Barrett, Chippenham. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. DORSETSHIRE. 25.— Shaftesbury ( County).— Sentenced to 7 days imprisonment, 4th inst., for vagrancy— WILLIAM NASH, alias CHRISTOPHER ALLEN and WILLIAM SMITH, age 36, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair inclined to be sandy, eyes hazel, cut mark between thumb and finger left hand; diess, old dark plaid coat, dark striped tweed trousers, black bowler hat. A native of Manchester. States he was convicted at Manchester for larceny, in 1890, in name of William Smith. Found in his possession: 1 pair of shoemaker's pliers, 1 pair of pincers, 1 rasp, 1 knife, 2 polishing- irons, 1 hammer, and 1 awl— supposed the proceeds of larceny. Information to Inspector Elford, Shaftesbury. HAMPSHIRE. 26. — Bournemouth ( County). — Remanded for having housebreaking implements in his possession — A man who gives the name of GEORGE WILLIS, age about 24, height 5 ft. 1\ in., complexion fair, bail- light brown, eyes grey, scar on left side of neck, cross tattooed on right arm. States he is a clerk and native of Dublin. Is supposed to be an expert burglar. Had in his possession a black patent leather hand- bag about 15 iu. long, also 5 sovereigns sewn in his coat, which are no doubt the proceeds of a larceny. Information to Supt. Knapton, Bournemouth. HUNTINGDONSHIRE. 27. — St. NeotS ( County). — Remanded till 19th inst., for forgery and fraud— JAMES HENRY BROOKS, alias WRIGHT, BELL, and MAY- FIELD ( see Cases No. 15, 16th May last, and No. 12, 12th August last), age 48, height 5 ft. 4J in. without shoes, weight 9 st. 3 lbs., complexion pale, hair brown, whiskers and moustache a shade lighter than hair, moustache of longer growth than beard or whiskers, eyes blue, rather prominent nose, thin arms thickly covered with hair; speaks with an accent that would seem to indicate his association with Germans; dress, long brown striped overcoat with large cape, rough black coat and vest, light drab trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots. States he is a draper, and that he belongs to Truro. Had in his possession a new pocket knife with pearl handle, several blades and appliances, in case marked " Thos. Renshaw & Son, Sheffield"; a similiar knife with tortoiseshell handle; a small common two- bladed knife with pearl handle; and a new cigar cutter with tortoiseshell handle— supposed stolen. His modus operandi is to call upon rag merchants and others, representing himself to be the agent for some large paper manufacturer, agree to pay ex- orbitant prices for rags, & c., draw a commission, or obtain money by worthless cheques which are generally written on blank paper. When arrested he TUESDAY, JANUARY 17, 1893. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 3 had one of these rheques for £ 5, dated January 5th, 1893, on Lloyd's Banking Co. Limited, Cardiff, and signed Thomas Owen. Has undergone 18 months imprisonment for fraud at Leicester. Is supposed to be identical with man wanted in various parts of the country for similar offences. Information to Supt. Copping, St. Neots. KENT. 28. — Sevenoaks ( County). — Remanded till 18th inst., for larceny ( person)- JOHN JOHNSON ( supposed false), age 39, height 5 ft 4 in., com- plexion fallow, hair,- whiskers, and moustache brown, scar on both forearms ; dress, Inverness cape, lined with black salin, black ribbed coat and vest, black cloth trouseis with blue stripes, side- spring boots, white front and collar, black tie, white cuffs with links bearing the masonic emblem, black soft billy- cock hat; wore a gold ring, and carried a silk umbrella. Has the appearance of a clergyman, and attends weddings, & c. Supposed previously con- victed. Information to Supt. Waghorn, Sevenoaks. 29. — Tunbridge Wells ( Borough). — Com- mitted for trial at the Maidstone Assizes, for larceny ( till) — RICHARD NICHOLLS, age 29, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion pale, hair, whiskers, and moustache black, eyes hazel, birthmark inside right thigh, two indistinct marks tattooed on right fore- arm ; dress, blue serge jacket, brown check trousers, black hard felt hat. A tailor ; native of Bath. Was sentenced, on' 4th January, 1888, to 3 months hard labour for indecent exposure ; on 16th April, 1888, to 1 month hard labour for till larceny ; on 16th July, 1888, at Maidstone Assizes, to 6 months imprisonment for stealing a sovereign from Graves- end Post Office ; on 20th February, 1889, at Maidstone Assizes to 12 months imprisonment for stealing a sovereign at Tonbridge ; in April, 1890, at Maidstone Borough Quarter Sessions, to 15 months imprisonment for till larceny ( 2 cases) at Maidstone; in January, 1892, at Brighton Quarter Sessions, to 12 months hard labour for stealing money at Brighton. Information to Supt. Allison, Tnnbridge Wells. OXFORDSHIRE. 30.— Woodstock ( County).— Committed for trial at the next Oxford Quarter Sessions for committing an unnatural offence — GEORGE PRATLEY, age 20, height o ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes hazel ; dress, dark jacket and vest, light corduroy trousers, black leggings, heavy nailed boots ( much worn), wearing a cap. A native of Church Hanborough, Oxford- shire. Information to Inspector Sorrel, Woodstock.
