GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JANUARY 6, 1893. VOL. X., No. 942. REGULATIONS. 2. All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications vpon them should be addressed to THE KDITOB OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAM, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning perxonswhose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 1. In all cases where a reward is offered the name ana address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and ihs exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. C\ d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. S. livery announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to bexnserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. T. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be c^ rehended or of stolen property bear a number, a,. d art alphabetically arranged by counties. g. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which mat/ result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be for warded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They mutt be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Brummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Cnar, ng Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the simulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— I. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of erime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, ou the application of private persona, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly .• impressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable. ( o) The person by whom it will be paid. (<£) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 1 No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to pi operty stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the . reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1. — Y Division-— For larceny ( lodger) and stealing a gentleman's 14- carat gold open- face key- less lever watch, No. 49167, crystal glass, " No. 260" scratched inside case — ARTHUR TRACEY MATTHEWS ( may assume the name of Conway), age 24, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, no whiskers or moustache, eyes hazel, cross- flags and shield tattooed on left forearm; dress, dark blue frieze Newmarket overcoat, dark reefer suit, white wrapper round neck, side- spring boots. A native of Stoke Newington. Has served in the 4th Hussars. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BERKSHIRE. 2.— Reading ( Borough). — Far obtaining 10 quarters of wheat and 20 sacks, by false pretences, on 30th November— JOHN FREDERICK WIL- SON, age 26 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion rather pale, hair and slight moustache dark brown, eyes hazel, oval face ; dress, short blue beaver overcoat with velvet collar, grey and black check suit, white collar, blue necktie, lace boots, black hard felt hat; cf gentlemanly appearance and address. A corn merchant; native of Whitchurch, Bucks. He represented that he was in business as a corn merchant at Aylesbury, and by this means fraudu- lently obtained the wheat and sacks. He has not resided at Aylesbury for the last 9 months, but has been living at 31, Sydney- terrace, Richmond, Snrrey. His father resides at Whitchurch, near Aylesbury, and he has a brother, a tobacconist, at Kingsbury, near Aylesbury. He was arrested on the above charge and remanded on bail, but failed to appear. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. CARNARVONSHIRE. 3. — Bangor ( County). — For attempting to commit an unnatural offence on a retriever bitch—- WILLIAM BEAVER LEACH, age 52, height 5 ft. 7£ in., complexion sallow, hair and eyes grey, slight birthmark under left eye, scar across right of forehead, scar about one inch long on lower lip, prominent cheekbones, star tattooed on left hand; dress, brown coat and vest, blue serge trousers, blue cap. A native of Llangefni. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Prothero, Bangor. DEVONSHIRE. 4. — Exeter ( City). — WILLIAM BEWEN, Case No. 11, 23rd ult., not to be apprehended. DUMFRIESSHIRE. 5.— Dumfries ( County). — For rape and rob- bery— JOHN McCULLOCH, age 28, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., hair brown, very small ginger moustache, swinging, slovenly gait, cross flags and star between flags tattooed on left arm, tattooed on right arm; had a black eye and scratch down left cheek on 30th ult.; dress, black corded jacket, vest, and trousers, glazed cap, knitted wool muffler. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Gordon, Dumfries. DURHAM. 6. — Durham ( City). — For stealing a large quantity of tinB ( recovered), 9 silver- plated brooches, various patterns, and 6 pairs of common sleeve- links, on 27th ult.— SOLOMON FRANCIS, alias WIL- LIAM JOHNSON, a tinsmith, or labourer, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, bair dark brown, slight dark moustache, eyes grey, twtr right wrist, small scar back of right hand and on right knee, smart appearance; has been in the Army; dress, dark or blue cloth jacket, fustian trousers and vest, blue neckerchief, cap with peak. A native of Easington- lane. His father, a tinsmith, resides at Thornley, and he has a brother- in- law living in a van in the neighbourhood of Halifax. Was convicted at Pollocksbaws anl Ayr, in July, 1888, for obtaining food and lodgings by false pre- tences, and was arrested in Glasgow in August, 1888, for stealing a horse at Seaham Harbour, and sen- tenced at Durham Sessions to 6 months imprison- ment. Information to Chief Constable Smith, Durham. KENT. 7— Sittingbourne ( County). — For stealing fowls ( recovered)— FRANK POULTENEY, age 24, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel; dress, old dark monkey jacket, old cord trousers, tight fitting to legs, dark cloth cap. A notorious poacher and thief ; native of Sittiugbourne. He sometimes works in brickfields. 8.— Sittingbourne ( County). — For larceny ( person)— MOR R1S PAYNE, age 20, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, hair light, no whiskers or mou- stache. A dealer; native of Sittingbourne. He associates with low horse- dealers. Information to Supt. Lacy, Sittingbourne. LANCASHIRE. 9.— Garstang ( County). — For obtaining 12s. by false pretences at Calder Vale, 20th ult.— J AMES HINDLE ( supposed false), age about 40 to 50, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, long thin face, hair dark brown, turning grey, slight dark moustache ; dressed, when last seen, in blue overcoat, 2 T H E POLICE GAJZF. TTE. FRIDAY, JANUARY G, 1893. dai'k suit, black billycock hat, clogs. Has the appearance of a factory operative. This man calls upon tradespeople in the vicinity of some disused mill, and represents that the mill has been taken by a certain person, and that he ( Hindle) is to be manager, and on the strength of this representation he obtains money. Warrant issued. Information to Sapt. Bourke, Garsting. 10.— Rochdale( Borough).— For stealing pigeons ( recovered)— License Holder WILLIAM KENYON BUTTERWORTH, alias KENYON, Office No. 43437, age 30, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, eyes grey, birth- mark back of neck, scar upper part of left shoulder- blade, 2 centre of back, and 1 base of 4th right finger. Sentenced at Manchester, 1st Feb., 1888, to 5 years penal servitude, and 5 years police super- vision, for larceny ( person). J O 405. For failing to report — Licence Holder JOHN O'HARA, alias ANDREW KEEGHAN, and SHANDLEY, Office No. 43836, age 38, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, scars top of head, each temple, right side of neck, left elbow, right shin, top of left shin, on 2nd left fiager, and 2 on 1st left finger. " D " ( indistinct) left breast. Sentenced at Manchester, 16th July, 1883, to 10 years penal servitude for burglary." D J 596. Information to the Chief Constable, Rochdale. LINCOLNSHIRE. 11. — Barton- on- Humber ( County). — For stealing, 31st ult., a cash- box containing about £ 28, mostly in silver; also a gun licence, dog licence, and spirit licence, all made out in the name of James Branton, New Holland— THREE MEN, 1st, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., slim build, complexion fair, thin face, hair and moustache light; wore a dark snuff- colour overcoat and brown hard felt hat; 2nd, age 25 to 30, complexion, hair, and moustache dark; wore a dark overcoat and black soft felt hat, and had a large light- colour muffler round the lower part of his face and neck; 3rd, age about 25, small of stature, complexion, hair, and moustache dark, wore a light- colour hard felt hat. All are of very smart appearance, and are supposed to belong to Leeds or Bradford. They booked by the 2.30 P M. train, 31st ult., from New Holland to Retford, from whence they booked to Doncaster. Frequent racing and coursing meetings. Information to Supt. Wood, Barton- on- Humber. MONTGOMERYSHIRE. 12.— WeshpOOl ( County).— For stealing a gold ring ( recovered)— GEORGE SHOWELL, alias GEORGE WILLIAMS, age 31 or 32, height 5 ft. 8 in., square build, complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache sandy, otherwise clean shaved, eye3 blue, walks very erect; dress, short brown dust coat, grey trousers, drab leggings, cloth cap, carries a black basf. A tramping clock cleaner ; supposed native of Much Wenlock, Salop. Has served in the 4th King's Own Regiment. Is very fond of fast company and dancing. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Crowden, Welshpool. NORFOLK. 13. — Watton ( County). — For stealing, at Breckles, 1st inst.— A pedlar's basket, containing scrubbing, stove, and clothes brushes, candle- sticks, vases, purses, combs, cotton, rings, & c.— ELIZA- BETH D EIGHT ON, age 24, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion swarthy, hair black, eyes brown, gipsy appearance; dress, black dress and hat, brown shawl. A native of Brentwood or Chickwell. Holds a pedlar's certificate, granted in 1892 by the Chief Constable of Norfolk. Warrant issued. Information to Irspector Read, Watton. OXFORDSHIRE. 14.— Oxford ( County).— For stealing clothing at Cowley, on 29th ult.— HUBERT HENRY FLOWERS, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light, eyes blue, limps a good deal; dressed in coachman's long black overcoat with black buttons, black coat and vest, blue guernsoy, dark grey striped trousers, Oxford shirt, lace boots. A coachman ; native of St. Mary'p, BaDbury. Was discharged from the Army by purchase, 29th October, 1886. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, County Police Station, Oxford. SHROPSHIRE. 15. — Bridgnorth ( County). — For larceny ( dwelling house), 26th ult.— JOHN ANDERSON, age 28 to 30, height 6 ft. 1 in., complexion and hair dark, slight brown moustache, walks very erect; dress, dark plaid cloth suit, black hard felt hat, l « ce boots. A miner; native of Broseley, Salop. Has been in the Army. Is likely to be found at brick- yards or collieries. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Walters, Bridgnorth. SURREY. 16.— Dorking ( County).— For stealing, 1st inst. — A lady's small gold open- face geneva watch, small silver chain attached ; a lady's small silver open- face geneva watch, small gold chain attached ; and a small gold brooch— A MAN, age about 23, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair and slight mous- tache dark, eyes blue ; dress, black overcoat, black diagonal coat and vest, brown striped trousers, hard felt hat, light boots ; carried a walkiDg- stick with silver knob. Information to Supt. Collis, Dorking. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. DORSETSHIRE. 17.— Shaftesbury ( County).— Sentenced to 7 days imprisonment, 4th inst., for vagrancy— WILLIAM NASH, alias CHRISTOPHER ALLEN and WILLIAM SMITH, age 36, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair inclined to be sandy, eyes hazel, cut mark between thumb and finger left hand; dress, old dark plaid coat, dark striped tweed trousers, black bowler hat. A native of Manchester. States he was convicted at Manchester for larceny, in 1890, in name of William Smith. Found in his possession: 1 pair of shoemaker's pliers, 1 pair of pincers, 1 rasp, 1 knife, 2 polishing- irons, 1 hammer, and 1 awl— supposed the proceeds of larceny. Information to Inspector Elford, Shaftesbury. SUFFOLK. 18.— Ipswich ( Borough).— Remanded on bail till 9th inst, for stealing valuable books from an auction, on 14th ult.— EDWARD HERBERT SAWYER, age 27 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 6 in., weight 8 or 9 stones, complexion pale, hair black, eyes dark ; fashionably dressed. A native of Melton, Suffolk. Lately lodged at 6, Cosmo- place, Russell- square, London. He is believed to be an habitual thief of rare books, and to be known, at any rate by name, to many book- buyers. An advertisement of his, addressed " To Book Collectors, " will be found in the " Athecajum " of 24th December, at page 874, under the initials of " H. S , Edinburgh House, Dover." Amongst the valuable books believed to have been in his possession may be mentioned Surtee's " Ask Mamma," original cloth, 1st Edition ; Comic History of Rome, original cloth, 1st Edition; Cartoons, satirical, humorous, & c., coloured plate3 by Doyle, red cloth, 1848; Autographic Mirror, with caricatures by Rowlandson and Thackeray, cloth, 1864; Dicken's Oliver Twist, 3 vols, 1st Edition, and another edition of 1846; Peter Schlemihl, illustrated by Cruikshank. » It is most desirable that this information be brought to the notice of auctioneers, book- buyers, & c., to afford them a very possible opportunity of getting on the track of missing property. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 19.— K Division.— 4th inst., by housebreaking— About 100 gold and silver watches, including 1 gold English lever, f- plate, maker, " Abrams "; 1 gold geDcva, new, plain case?, No. 77609; 1 silver lever hunter, No. 2609, maker " Selt," 1 ditto, maker " Hustuck,"! silver geneva, No. 900; 1 ditto, No 53360. about 70 wedding rings ; 40 keepers; 30signets; 100 fancy and diamond rings, various patterns; 1 horse- shoe pin, set seven diamonds ; 12 gold necklets ; 30 gold lockets, various patterns and sizes; about 30 pairs gold en'rings, various patterns, sime long, some short; 40 gold scarf pins; 5 gold and 5 silver pencil cases ; about 60 silver coins, Jubilee, etc.; some 5s. pieces mounted as broocbes ; and about 40 gold and silver alberts, various patterns. 20.— B Division.— Since 20th Octobcrlast— An oval diamoud brooch, large diamond in centre, surrounded by two rows of diamonds, 12 in inner row, and 16 in outer, large and small diamonds alternately. CHESHIRE. 21.— Runcorn ( County).— 29th ult.— A black cardigan jacket; a pair of brown check trousers ; a brown check vest; 13 silk handkerchiefs, various colours ; 1 pair of men's blue woollen drawers; and 1 pair of bine striped woollen drawers. DORSETSHIRE. 22.— Boaminster ( County). — 30th ult., by housebreaking, at Charmouth— A round metal time- piece ; and 2 pairs of ladies' high kid button boots, marked inside " 108, Regent - street, London." GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 23.— Cheltenham ( County).— 31st ult., from the Great Western Railway Station — A brown leather Gladstone bag ( recovered), which contained 1 superfine navy mess vest, gold braided; 1 superfine navy suit; 2 new linen shirts ; 5 black ties ; 4 under- vests; 2 pairs drawers ; 2 pairs socks; 3 pairs kid gloves ; 1 pair house shoes ; 1 pair dress shoes ; 6 pocket handkerchiefs; 2 white silk ditto, " S. B. E." marked in red thereon; 1 hair brush; 1 tooth brush ; I box tooth powder; 1 pyjama sleeping suit; 1 doz. collars; 3 Spanish coins, value 10s. each; 1- silver pencil case. Nearly the whole of the articles are marked " S. B. Evans " or " S. B. E." Supposed by a MAN, age about 20 or 21, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., thin features, hair and slight moustache light, respectable appearance; dress, blue beaver cloth coat, dark trousers, black hard hat. KENT. 24.— Tun bridge Wells ( Borough).— 15th ult, from a private hotel— A lady's gold watch, a gold bracelet for holding watch, maker " Devoy " ; a gold bracelet with pencil fastening ; 3 plain gold bangles ; a gold necklace, plain pattern; a diamond gipsy ring; a diamond and gold ring, snake pattern; a gold seal, set with cornelian stone; a gold seal; a gold spectacle case, chased, " J. E. Leaf " engraved thereon ; a gold mourning ring, " In Memory of William Leaf" inside. Information to Chief Constable Allison, Tunbridge Wells. LANCASHIRE. 25.— Bolton ( County).— 11th ulto.— An English silver lever watch, No. 47329, maker Barrs, Cran- nock, edge of outer case slightly crushed, heavy silver curb pattern albert attached, with silver cross ivy- leaf pattern as pendant; 1 black Cardigan jacket, nearly new; 1 blue serge jacket, black Italian cloth lining, 4 pockets outside, and 1 inside right breast; 1 light grey union shirt, 2 small red stripes running through, forming squires; a box of cigars, " Rezia " brand. Information to Supt. Lce; n'~ g B. lfon. 4 FRIDAY, JANUARY 6, 1893. has committed another larceny, at an Oxford College, on the 1st inst. Description of some of the rings:— 1 blue enamel square top, set with topaz surrounded by pearls 1 with small ivory miniature, " woman weeping at a tomb "; 1 with swivel and motto; 1 with miniature painting; 1 cornelian, with figure impressed thereon ; 1 set with opal and small diamonds ; 1 set with black garnets, name inside; 1 set with five emeralds; several set with coloured stones and pearls, with dates inside ; some gold keepers ; 1 gold chain bracelet, fastens with a padlock set with carbuncles in shape of heart. WORCESTERSHIRE. 32.— Upton- on- severn ( County). — Between July and October last— 1 gold obloDg brooch, round centre, with diamond and 28 pearls, in morocco ease, lined with brown velvet, maker, " Arnold Lewis, late Simmons, St. Ann's- square, Manchester"; 1 gold buckle ring, wide; 1 small gold ring, engraved; 1 gold bracelet, inch wide, set with pearls half way round and a braidiDg of gold on each side, in morocco case, brown velvet, maker, " London and Ryder, Bond- street, London," " October 28th, 1885, London," engraved inside; 1 gold ring with one pearl, set in diamond- shaped gold, slightly engraved ; 1 gold link watch chain, about 6 in. long, with em- bossed gold ball at one end ; 1 pair of eye- glasses in wooden case, maker, " Thomas Armstrong, Deans- gate, Manchester," and " Miss Haden Cope, North Malvern Vicarage," on label attached.
