All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning personswhose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Tariiculars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. • 1 In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. o. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will Le prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph cr sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 8. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person berequiredto ; be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed bu an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. J. 8. Announcements of all persons to le apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, a.. i art alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whi:/ i mag result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forxarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed ' DrummondSf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Cnarmg Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. ( O < d) The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sancti jb of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( à) The amount of the reward. ( á) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. S. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holdi g out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to tria or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Polico Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— D Division.— For assaulting and carnally knowing a girl, age 17, on 26th ult.— EMILE CLOT, alias MATER and MILOSH, a native of Paris, age 45, height 5 ft. 10 in., stoat build, complexion sallow, hair, whiskers ( cut close) and moustache dark brown ( turning grey), eyes grey, large scar in fleshy part of left forearm, dirty appearance, speaks English very imperfectly; dress, blue serge jacket- suit, black felt hat with square top, invari- ably wears a flannel shirt without collar or tie. Will probably be found in a provincial town in company with foreign prostitutes and bullies. Warrant issued. 2.— E Division.— For stealing a cheque for £ 2 12s. — GEORGE BOND, age 29, height 6 ft., complexion fair, hair and moustache light brown, eyes blue, scar on cheek ( supposed left) ; dress, brown suit, round brown felt hat. A native of London. Warrant issued. 3.— K Division.— For stealing, 14th ult., a silver watch ; black coat and vest; pair of lavender colour trousers ; and a pair of side- spring boots— ROBERT MILLS, age 19, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, hair light, stoops when walking, downcast look, star in red and blue ink tattooed on back of hand ; dressed in stolen clcthing, and P. and 0. cap. A native of Portsea or Southampton. Warrant issued. 4.— p Division.— For stealing, 19th ult.— 7 gold scarf pins, viz., 1 masonic, representing two clowns, surrounded by malachite, 1 coral dog's head, 1 plain pear shape, 1 square, 1 horseshoe, 1 small pearl, 1 safety pearl in centre; 1 silver scarf- pin, pea shape ; 2 sauce ladles ; 3 dessert forks ; 4 table forks; 3 table spoons, with crest ( a griffin), all silver; 2 shirts, viz., 1 white, 1 blue- and- white, " Richardson" marked with red cotton on waist; 2 coats, viz., 1 light covert, 1 blue serge frock, " Baron ven Goechhansen" on tabs; 1 malacca walking- stick, plain gold knob CAFFEN, a foreigner, age 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., com- plexion dark, hair, moustache, and eyes brown, low forehead, prominent nose, one tooth deficient in right upper jaw; dress, light suit, brown felt hat, stand- up collar, lace boots. This man took lodgings at a private hotel and absconded with the articles, leaving behind a common portmanteau containing dirty linen. 3 ; 5.— v Division.— For deserting his children— DANIEL STONE, age 44, height 5 ft. 4 in., com- plexion dark, liair, whiskers and moustache dark brown, lost right leg and wears a cork substitute; is of drunken habits, walks with a stick; dress, long black coat, striped vest and trousers, cloth cap with peak— all old and dirty. A painter and grainer; native of Teddington. Has a brother at Rosherville, near Gravesend, and another at Reading, where he may go. Warrant issued. 6.— Y Division.— For unlawfully withdrawing himself from duty as a Metropolitan Police con- stable— GEORGE BAKER, age 24, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, small side- whiskers, eyes dark ; dress, black reefer jacket and vest, blue striped trousers, white collar, black hard felt hat, lace boots. A native of Sheerness. Has been a waiter in the Royal Navy, and may seek similar employment. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Tard, S. W. AYRSHIRE. 7.— Dun lop ( County).— For cattle- stealing, 20th and 28th July, and 4th and 11th Aug. last— A MAN, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., hair dark brown or auburn, reddish whiskers and moustache, peculiar eyes, looks down when talking, round shoulders, swaggering gait, has the appearance of a farm servant, shepherd, or drover, broad Scottish accent; dress, dark grey rough tweed jacket suit, trousers strapped below knee. The portrait is that of the following man, whom the cattle stealer is said to strongly resemble, and it is believed that they are ore and the same— ALEXANDER THOM, alias TCDD, JAMES BARBOUR, GEORGE PIRIE, PETER MAC- KAT, and JOHN MACKINTOSH, age 55 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, reddish whiskers and moustache, eyes blue, brown spot on left ' eyeball, large nose, speaks with Highland accent, plausible manner and talkative, of 2 THE POLICE GAZETTE. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1892. respectable appearance. Generally represents him- self to be a shepherd or cattle dealer. A labourer or shepherd ; native of Aberdeen. Was convicted nine times before the Sheriff, and once before the Circuit Court at Aberdeen. Is now wanted on various charges in the Nortk of Scotland. He was last seen on 12th Angust, when he sold one of the stolen cows to a cattle dealer on the road near Hamilton, Lanarkshire, and then went by train to Glasgow. Information to Capt. McHardy, Chief Constable, Ayr. DURHAM. 8.— Sunderland ( Borough). — For embezzle- ment and fraud— GEORGE STEPHENSON LAW- SON, a solicitor, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair very light brown, long light ginger whiskers and moustache, turning grey, eyes light blue, is short- sighted and constantly wears spectacles, walks with a long step, and has a lounging gait; generally dresses in black frock coat and high silk hat, and carries an umbrella. A native of Sunderland. Absconded 5th or 6th ult. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Huntley, Sunder- land. GLAMORGANSHIRE. £ 50 REWARD. 9.— Bridgend ( County). — For embezzlement and forgery- JAMES LOVE LUCK, age 54, height 5 ft. 6 in., round, full and very red face, hair, whiskers and moustache grey, eyes dark, red nose, short neck, thick hands, long fingers, short legs, is subject to severe attacks of coughing; speaks French; usually dresses in dark clothes. A ship- broker and merchant; late of Aberavon, which place he left on the 18th July last, for Paddington. Warrant issued. The ^ above reward will be paid by Evan Evans, Esq., Aberavon, Glamorganshire, to any person giving such information as will lead to the appre- hension of Loveluck. Information to Supt. Thomas, Bridgend. HAMPSHIRE. 10.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For obtaining food by false pretences— GEORGE CRISP, alias PARKER, age about 23, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., slight build, complexion dark, pointed features, hair and small moustache black, otherwise clean shaved, eyes very dark ; dressed, when last seen, in black lounge coat and vest, grey striped trousers, white linen shirt front and cuffs, very old twill shirt, black felt hat, side- spring boots with protectors— all much worn. Stated he had been | a booking- clerk on the railway. Absconded 26th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Cosser, Town Hall, Portsmouth. HEREFORDSHIRE. 11.— Hereford ( County).— For obtaining a soldering iron by false pretences at Kingston, on 29th August last— THOMAS EDWARDS, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, hair, whiskers, and moustache sandy, cast in one eye; dress, old dark jacket and vest, cord trousers, soft black felt hat. Travels the country with a donkey and cart, hawking umbrellas, accom- panied by his wife and two children. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Smith, Hereford. LANCASHIRE. 12.— Ormskirk ( County).— For failing to sur- render at the Liverpool County Sessions on 27th ult., on a charge of felony— RICHARD GRUNDY, age 42, height 5 ft. in., complexion sallow, hair light brown, moustache brown, eyes ( large) grey, very surly- looking, stoops when walking, is fond of pigeon shooting, pigeon flying, and dog racing. A tnative of Crook, Shevington, Lancashire. Has lived at Hoyland, near Barnsley, Featherstone, near Ponte- fract, No3tle, near Wakefield, Newfield, Spcnnymoor, Plawsworth, Thornley, and Bishop Auckland. He is also wanted for indecently assaulting a girl at Skelmersdale. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jervis, Ormskirk. 13.— Rochdale ( County).— For failing to report — Supervisee ROBERT RIGG, Office No. 40282, age 49, height 5 ft. 6 in , complexion fresh, hair sandy, eyes blue, 3rd right finger contracted, small scar front of left shin ; dress, when last seen, work- house clothing, consisting of dark corduroy coat, white fustian sleeved vest, and white fustian trousers. Sentenced at Salford, 4th July, 1881, to 10 years penal sevitude and 7 years police supervision for felony. 13 H 541. Information to Supt. Heywood, Rochdale. 14. — Manchester ( City). — For failing to report — License Holder THOMAS JONES, Office No. 43349, age 33, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair black, eyes blue, scars on forehead, right thumb, lip, left forearm, left wrist, and left buttock, pockmarked on back and neck. Sentenced at Chester, 26th October, 1885, to 10 years penal ser- vitude for bestiality. Licensed 27th July, 1892. L 624. License Holder JOHN HIGGINS, alias GEO. HARRISON, Office No. 43233, age 33, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, scars back of head, right side of forehead, right eyebrow, knuckle of 4th right finger, on left knee, left muscle, and front of left elbow, anchor front of left forearm, "- J. H." back of left arm, bracelet left wrist, flat feet. Sentenced at Man- chester, 21st April, 1888, to 5 years penal servitude for robbery. Licensed 13th July, 1892. O 181. License Holder RICHARD REYNOLDS, alias RICHARD HAWKINS, RICHARD HA WES, and RICHARD HOWARTH, Office No. 43038, age 35, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh! hair dark brown ( bald), eyes brown, scar back of right hand and left elbow, anchor and " V. R." on right, and " V. R." and crossed flags on left forearm, bracelet on each, and anchor above left wrist ( all indistinct), mole right hip. Sentenced at Manchester Assizes, 21st Jan., 1887, to 5 years penal servitude, and a remanet of a former sentence, for larceny. Licensed 15th June, 1892. Sentence expires 17th July, 1893. H N 288. License Holder JAMES HARDING, alias ENGLISHLEY, Office No. 43301, age 42, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, scar right breast, 4 on right shin, 2 right eye- brow ( blue), B. C. right, and D. left side, crossed- fiags, crown, and anchor left forearm, woman left wrist, ship base of left thumb. Sentenced at Salford, 22nd October, 1888, to 5 years penal servi- tude and 3 years police supervision for shopbreaking. Licensed 21st July, 1892. License Holder THOMAS JONES, Office No. 43062, age 25, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes hazel, scars on head and neck, birthmark centre of back, sailor on right, cross with hammer, pincers and nails, ladder, spear, S. B , and flower on left forearm, anchor, heart, cross, and arrow left hand, woman outside right calf. Sentenced at Fyzabad ( General Court Martial), 7th May, 1888, to 5 years penal servitude for shooting with intent. Licensed 9th June, 1892 O 420. Supervisee PATRICK CONNOR, alias JOHN RILEY, JOHN THOMPSON, and CHARLES JONES, Office No. 38849, age 32, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes light hazel, scars back of head, between shoulders, back of left hand ( burn), above left wrist, and top of left foot, dot on right wrist. Sentenced at Wakefield, 16th October, 1882, to 7 years penal servitude and 5 years police supervision for larceny ( person). Liberated 4th January, 1890. Supervisee THOMAS RATCLIFF, alias THOS. WILLIAMS and WILLIAM LLOYD, Office No. 29583, age 40, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, hair grey, eyes hazel, scar right side top of head, right eyebrow, right side forehead, and scrofula scars from ear to ear, nose fractured and inclined to right, lost 2nd right finger and all top teeth, 2nd left toe overlaps first. Sentenced at Manchester Sessions, 20th October, 1879, to 8 years penal servi- tude and 7 years police supervision for larceny ( person). Liberated 31st December, 1885. Supervise JOHN SWIFT, Office No. 42306, age 42, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, scar left temple, 3 on right cheek, L on each knee, front of left shin, and inside right upper arm ( burn), 4th left finger contracted. Sentenced at Manchester, 11th December, 1890, to 12 months hard labour and 3 jearj police supervision for larceny. Supervisee HARRY BEILBY, alias ARTHUR BEILBY, Office No. 41575, age 21, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, scar on forehead, and blue scar right cheek, mole right collar bone, anchor outside right forearm. Sentenced at Preston, 2nd July, 1890, to 12 months hard labour and 4 years police supervision for larceny. Supervisee GEORGE WILSON, alias JAMES and JOSEPH McCULLOGlI and WARREN, Office No. 40979, ago 35, height 5 ft. 5 in, com- plexion frrsh, hair dark brown ( bald), eyes brown, blue scar outside left forearm, 4th left finger has been broken, and is contracted, Sentenced at Salford, 17th February, 1890, to 12 months hard labour and 3 years police supervision for shopbreak- ing Supervisee SAMUEL SHAW, alias CHARLES TAYLOR, Office No. 43262, age 41, height 5ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, scar left eyebrow, right side upper lip, back of head, bridge of nose, centre of back, and left knee and shin,, small mole top of left shoulder. Sentenced at Manchester Sessions, 8th October, 1891, to 9 months hard labour, and 2 years police supervision for larceny. Supervisee ELIZABETH WILLIAMSON, Office No. 41678, age 26, height 4 ft. 7 in,, complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey, slight impediment in speech, upper front teeth irregular, high narrow forehead, pockmarked. Sentenced at Salford, 20th October, 1890, to 9 months hard labour and 3 years police supervision for larceny. Information to Detective Superintendent Hicks,' Manchester. 15.— Accrington ( Borough). — For stealing, 4th inst., 4 pairs of lady's boots, viz.:— 1 pair glove- kid tops, glazed- kid vamps, long- legged and buttoned, size 3; 1 pair kid lace, plain, size 4; 1 pair glazed- kid buttoned ; 1 pair kid buttoned, " La Sanitaire " written on inside tops— all new— A WOMAN, age about 24 or 25, height 5 ft. 1 in., hair ( fringed in front) dark; dress, fawn- coloured jacket, navy- blue skirt trimmed with navy- blue and white- striped ribbon, dark slato- coloured cotton gloves, white silk handkerchief round neck. This woman called at a shop and asked for several pairs of boots to be sent to her lodgings for her sister and herself to try on. An assistant at the shop accompanied her to her lodgings with the boots and was taken into the parlour, when the woman made an excuse to go upstairs, taking the boots with her, but, instead of doing so, absconded with the boots. She had obtained the lodgings only a few hours pre- viously, when she stated that her husband would join her later on. x Information to Chief Constable Beattie, Accring- ton. LEICESTERSHIRE. 16— Melton Mowbray ( County).— For em- bezzling £ 2 12s. at Somerby— THOMAS COOPER, age 34, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion, hair, and eyes dark, walks with a slight springing gait; dress, dark overcoat ( burnt on right side near bottom), dark tweed cloth coat, vest and trousers, black felt hat, lace boots. Is supposed to be a native of London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bott, Melton Mowbray. NORFOLK. 17.— King's Lynn ( Borough). — For stealing clothing ( recovered) from ships— JAMES JOHN BUNTING, age 21, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in, com- plexion dark, hair dark brown, full dark eyes, thick lips, splay- footed; dress, shabby sailor's clothes, cheese- cutter cap with sloping peak. A sailor; native of Lynn. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Ware, King's Lynn. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 18— Daventry ( County).— For stealing £ 23 at Weedon, on 24th ult.— ARTHUR JONES, alias GEE, private 16th Battery Royal Artillery, age 26, height 5 ft. in, slender build, complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes blue, scar on right cheek, right side of forehead, and fourth finger right hand, dot tattooed left forearm, impediment in speech; dress, new brown cloth jacket suit, lace boots, grey cloth cap. A native of Leicester. He is also wanted for desertion. ( See Case No. 48, 4th inst.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Botterill, Daventry. SUSSEX ( EAST). 19— Hastings ( Borough).— For embezzlement — WILLIAM HENRY WARD, age 22, height FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1892. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, small light moustache; dress, black reefer jacket, grey trousers with dark stripes, black hard felt hat. A journeyman baker ; native of Bourton, Ashford, Kent. Absconded 17th ult. Information to Chief Constable Glenister, Hastings. WARWICKSHIRE. 20.— Aston ( County).— For obtaining £ 5 by false pretences— ABRAHAM ISAAC, a tailor, age 19, height 5 ft., thin build, complexion, hair, slight moustache, and eye3 dark ; dress, slate - coloured suit, dark billycock hat. A Polish Jew. Has been in England for about three years. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Walker, Aston. 21— Birmingham ( Borough).— For stealing a horse, trap, and harness ( recovered)— ALBERT SHIPWAY, alias FORD, and JONES, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 6 in., very thick- set, com- plexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes ( supposed) blue, very badly pockmarked; dress, light shabby jacket and vest, dark trousers, collar and tie, black hard hat. A fish salesman ; native of Birmingham. Is fond of the company of prostitutes and loose characters, and is well known to police of London, Liverpool, and Manchester. Warrant issued. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 22.— B Division.— Committed for trial at the Central Criminal Court, 17th inst., for burglary— JOHN SMITH, alias WALTER CHRISTOPHER KAVANAGH, age 18, height 5 ft. in , com- plexion fair, hair light brown, eyes blue, flit nose, scar over both eyes, pigeon- breasted, " P" and 2 dots tattooed on left forearm, and a hat on right arm ; dress, black vicuna coat and vest, light twead trousers, lace boots, black hard felt hat. A native of St. Luke's, London.— HARRY LEONARD, alias FISHER, age 30, height 5 ft. in., complexion swarthy, hair and moustache brown, eyes blue, lame right leg, and wears a pad ; dress, light dust over- coat, black vicuna coat, black diagonal trousers and vest, patent leather Bide- spring boots, brown felt hat. A native of Portsmouth. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, SW. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 23— Whittlesey ( County). — Committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions, 19th inst.— WIL- LIAM HUTCHINSON, alias JOHN McDONALD, SMITH, etc., age 70, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair grey, eyes hazel, tattooed on chest, belly, arms and legs.
