All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOK OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAHD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to znable the article in question to be thereby identified. • J. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and tin exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost oflos. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chicf officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. RSG- ULATIONS. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, a,. dart alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted ta the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request f ir insertion of any announcement, trill be wholly responsible for any proceedings wh i m may re wt from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be J jr curded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday miming. 1' hey must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotlaml Ya'd, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Cnunng Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 11. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. < C) < d> The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing suoli notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points- fa) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable, ( o) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 1 No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment^ in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holdi g out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to tria or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Polico Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— F Division. — For maliciously assaulting another police constable.— FREDERICK WILLIAM MALLETT, P. C. 180 E Division, age 24, height 6 ft. complexion fair, hair light, eyes blue, prominent nose, scar in. long on left side of face ; dress, dark clothes, black bowler hat. A native of Devon- port. He is a smith by trade, and will probably apply for work at shipbuilding yirls ia the North. Warrant issued. 2.— T Division.— Woodcut portrait and des- cription of WILLIAM HUGH FALVEY, alias THOMAS CORNISH, and ELDON, late of No. 72, Church- street, Chelsea, and No. 16, Tokenhouse- yard, City, whose apprehension is sought for conspiracy, & c., age 34, height 6 ft., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, beard and whiskers ( full, cut short, and pointed) and moustache light, two scars back of head, scar over left eyebrow, hair on chest, crown, shield, banner, 2 cannons, pile of shot, and wreath tattooed on front of right arm; dress, black vicuna frock coat, white vest, light striped trousers, high silk hat. Smart gentlemanly appearance. Was convicted at Central Criminal Court on 29th July, 1890, and sentenced to 18 months hard labour for conspiracy, & c., in connection with stamp frauds at Somerset House. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 3. — For embezzlement — THOMAS JOSEPH HUNT, a solicitor's clerk, late of 24, Maldon- street, Landor- road, Clapham, London, age 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion, hair ( straight aiid cut short) and moustache dark; dress, dark morning coat and vest, coloured striped trousers ( badly fitting), brown hard felt hat. Absconded 16th inst. Warrant issued. 4.— For embezzlement — J0 HN ROWLANDS, late of 11, Brook- read, Stoke Newington, London, age 34, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fair, hair, beard, and moustache light, one front tooth, deficient; dress, bli- ok twill cloth coat and vest, grey striped trousers, black silk hat, side- spring boots. A native of Manchester. His wife resides with friends at Peel- street, Salford. Absconded 22nd ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. AYRSHIRE. 5. — DunlOp ( County). — For cattle - stealing, 20th and 28th July, and 4ih and 11th ult.— A MAN, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., hair dark brown or auburn, reddish whiskers and moustache, peculiar eyes, looks down when talking, round shoulders, swaggering gait, has the appearance of a farm servant, shepherd, or drover, broad Scottish accent; dress, dark grey rough tweed jacket suit, trousers strapped below knee. The portrait is that of the following man, whom the cattle stealer is said to strongly resemble, and it s believed that they are one and the sam— ALEXANDER THOM, alias TODD, JAMES BARBOUR, GEORGE PIRIE, PETER MAC- KAY, and JOHN MACKINTOSH, age 55 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, reddish whiskers and moustache, eyes blue, brown spot on left ^ eyeball, large nose, speaks with Highland accent, plausible manner and talkative, of T H E POLICE GAZETTE. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 18 92. respectable appearance. Generally represents him- self to be a shepherd or cattle dealer. A labourer or shepherd ; native of Aberdeen. Was convicted nine times before the Sheriff, and once before the Circuit Court at Aberdeen. Is now wanted on various charges in the North of Scotland. He was last seen on 12th August, when he sold one of the stolen cows to a cattle dealer on the road near Hamilton, Lanarkshire, and then went by train to G lasgow. Information to Capt. McHardy, Chief Constable, Ayr. BRECONSHIRE. 6. — Crickhowell ( County). — For obtaining money by false pretences— A MAN, ago about 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair, and eyes dark ; dress, dark suit, much worn, black cloth cap, red neckerchief. Carried a small black bag containing clock cleaners' tools. This man calls at houses and represents himself to be a clock cleaner, and states he has been sent by a watchmaker residing in a neighbouring town to repair clocks. Stated he was a native of Mertbyr Tydvil. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Winterson, Crickhowell. CHESHIRE. £ 10 REWARD. 7.— Birkenhead ( County). — For embezzle- ment— HERBERT GILMAN HAWKES ( see Case No. 74, 9th inst.), late relieving officer of the Wirral Poor Law Union, age 51, height about 6 ft., weight about 18 stone, complexion fresh, full face, hair, whiskers ( all round face),- and moustache brown, may now be clean shaved, short neck, double chin, high stomach, speaks with rather rough coarse voice and slight Irish accent, has the appearance of a rough farmer or cattle dealer ; dressed generally, in dark ' grey tweed suit and dark hard felt hat, invariably wears, in wet or cold weather, a light- coloured mackintosh or dark grey Irish freize ulster. Is supposed to be a native of county Wexford, Ireland. Absconded lst inst., when he was accompanied by his wife, age 38, rather short stature, complexion fresh, rather sharp nose inclined to be red, pleasant countenance, smart and intelligent, also his five children, viz: 2 boys, age 10 and 7 respectively, and 3 girls, age 11, 8, and 6 respectively. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Wirral Poor Law Union to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension of Hawke3. 8.— Birkenhead ( County).— For embezzle- ment, at New Brighton, 10th inst. — HARRY WILSON, age 21, height 5 ft, 2 in, slender build, complexion fresh, thin face, hair dark ; dress, dark coat and vest, striped trousers, white tie, black hard felt hat. A native of Birkenhead. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Supt. Hindley, Birkenhead. 9. — Middlewich ( County). — For indecent assault at Sandbach, 15th inst.— A MAN, age about 25, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., stoat build, complexion sallow, hair, moustache, beard and eyes dark, bow- legged ; dress, dark cloth bine jacket, dark trousers ( supposed corduroy), dark cloth cap of same material as jacket, leggings. Had tho appearance of a groom or stableman. Wanant issued. 10.— Middlewich ( County).— For shopbreaking at Middlowich, and stealing a quantity of Birming- ham jewellery, consisting of silver rings, Canadian gold watch chains, white metal watch chains, and seals; a lady's gold watch ; silk handkerchief, dark tweed suit; and 3 pairs of tweed trousers and 3 vests — MICHAEL GRANT, a rag gatherer, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion tallow, black curly hair, dark moustache.— THOMAS WELSH, age 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache dark, eyes brown, seal on left temple. May be wearing some of the stolen clothes, as their old clothing was left behind. A labourer; native of Middlewich, Warrant issued. 11.— Middlewich ( County). — For stealing a tricycle ( recovered)— GEORGE JONES, age 25, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, moustache sandy; dress, light plaid jacket, blue serge trousers, clogs, and hard felt hat. Information to Snpt. Large, Middlewich. DERBYSHIRE. 12.— Be I per ( County).— For stealing at What- standwell, 5th inst.— A silver Bro> k'y lever watch, No. 1135438; a silver guard with a medallion, " W. A. Flint" engrave 1 thereon; and a silver brooch, thistle pattern — JOSEPH WALKER, age 2t>, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, rings tatt loed on fingers of both hands, women on both torenrms, man and flags on breast; dress, tneed suit. A native of Milford, Belper. Has served in the Army. Recen'ly worked in a limestone quany. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McDonald, Bulper. ESSEX. 13 — Grays ( County).— For stealing, atChadwell St. Mary, lOih inst., a black diagonal overcoat, a brown hard felt, hat, 2 pairs of woollen pants, 2 shirt front-!, 5 neckties, 1 white woollen scarf, 2 pawn tickets for a wauh f. nd a cl ain pawned at Lismore Crescent, Kentish Town- JOHN LONDON, age about 42, height 5 ft. 11 in., slight build, hair and mous( ache grey, no whiskers; dress, dark tweed suit, while rieckercl. ie', " P. & O" cap, of military appearance. A native of Woolwich. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jordan, Gray*. IP— Basingstoke ( County.)— For housebreak- ing 12th inst, at ShenfieW, and stealing— 1 blown p'aid jacket; 1 pepper and sa't coloured vett, small hook in armhole to hold watch chain; 1 pair red check tweed trousers — GEORGE WILLIAM ARMSTRONG, a private in the OxfordsH- e Regi- ment, No. 3609, age 19, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, 2 scars leit hand, Informatiou to Supt. Kinshott, Basingstoke. HERTFORDSHIRE. 17.— Ware ( County).— For embezzlement at Tonwell— HERBERT ALLAN, ago 26, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes grey. Supposed to be a native of Dorsetsli: e, from which place he was sent to Bengeo Reforma- tory on conviction for arson. Absconded 26th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Wymir, Supt, Ware. FORFARSHIRE. 14.— Dundee ( City).— Portrait and description of WILLIAM BREMNER, whose apprehension is sought for breaking out of Dundee Prison, 28th or 29th ult., whilst undergoing a sentence of 12 months imprisonment for housebreaking and assaulting police— Age 34, height 5 ft. 7^ in. ( without shoes), complexion frefeh, hair black or very dark brown, eyes hazel, proportionate build, muscular, two scars on back and three on top of head, one on right temple, large scar on right of chin, horse- shoe and hammer tattooed on right forearm, burn mark left forearm, scar on left thumb. When last seen, his moustache was shaved off, and he was dressed in short single- breasted dust coat, light grey tweed vest, dark tweed tight- fitting trousers, grey tweed cap with peak, lace boots. A blacksmith and cart- wright ; native of Forfarshire. He is an expert housebreaker, uses false keys and picklocks, and generally assaults Police when apprehended. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Dewar, Dundee. HAMPSHIRE. 15.— Aldershot ( County).— For larceny ( trick), 22nd inst.— WILLIAM ROONEY, alias CLARK, CHARLES, and LEWIS, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, bald on top of head, heavy brown moustache, eyes blue; dressed, when last seen, at Farnborough, on 25th inst., in black coat and vest, brown or grey trousers, black hard felt hat. States he has served in the Army, and has recently returned from Mel- bourne. He represents himself to be a minister of religion of various denominations; at other times he says he is a dealer in cattle, and agent for an American meat company. He calls on lodging- house keepers, takes rooms, and pretends to pay in advance; obtains money from the proprietors and decamps. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Stephen- son, Aldershot. KENT. ] 8.— Chatham ( County).— For stealing, 13th inst., a bay gelding, 9 years, 16 hands, muscle of right leg swollen in shape of letter A, piece of skin off right side of tail; a chocolate coloured dog cart, picked out red, brown cloth cushions, American cloth underneath, left stop on shaft made of steel, right stop of brass, a set of plain silver mounted harness, off blinker slightly bent.— A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, very red face, high cheek bones, hair, whiskers and mous- tache dark brown; dress, grey Scotch tweed suit, black hard felt hat. Had the appearanco of a steward in the navy. Information to Supt. Coppinger, Chatham. 19.— CranbrOOk ( County).— For housebreak- ing, 12th inst., at Frittenden, and stealing a silver chronograph watch and albert ( recovered) ; 1 metal albert chain ; 1 meerschaum pipe in dark red case ; 1 brown velvet tobacco pouch, " Tobacco " in silk on front, with gutta percha lining ; and a suit of light- brown clothes— A man, who gave the name of JOHN CREWSON, age 30, height about 5 ft. 8 in,, complexion fair, hair brown, slight light moustache; dress, light coat and vest ( supposed those stolen), black cloth cap with peak. The watch and chain were found pledged at Ashford. Information to Supt. Bartlett, Cranbrook. 20.— Dover ( Borough).— For stealing, 2lst inst., an Excelsior cushion - tyre safety bicycle, " 5208 " on neck, " Shamrock" and ' 7" on handle- bar, makers, " Baylissand Thomas, Coventry."— A MAN, age about 23, height 5 ft. 3 in., moustache, no whiskers; dress, black lourga coat, grey trousers, black hard felt hat. Information to Supt. Sanders, Dover. 21.— Margate ( Borough).— For obtaining money by means of a fictitious cheque, 19th inst.— A MAN, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, rather heavy dark moustache; dress, dark suit ( short jacket), and black hard felt hat; smart appearance. He obtained two blank cheques on Lloyd's Bank, Limited, Margate, on the pretence that they were wanted for a medical gentleman in the town. Having filled in one for £ 7 12s., in favour of Mr. Thornton, drawn by Henry Woodward, and endorsed " Bertram Thornton," he took it to a confectioner's shop, and asked the assistant to oblige Mr. Thornton by cashing the cheque, as it was past banking hours. Is supposed to have in his possession the other blank cheque, No. 96 a/ k 1228. ( See Cases No. 9, 5th ult., and No. 12, 2nd inst.) Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Buck, Margate. LANCASHIRE. 22.— Kirkham ( County).— For failing to report — License Holder JAMES HENNESSEY, Office No. 42886, age 41, height 5 ft. 7\ in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes blue, several scars on eye- brows, 3 on nose, and scars on forehead, under right eye, on right cheek and under chin, blue mark front of left arm, pockmarked. MERIONETHSHIRE. 24— Dolgelly ( County). — For breaking into the Station of the Great Western Railway Company, 14th inst., and stealing a canvas bag containing £ i 4s.— JOHN BURTON, age 32, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark b? owu, eyes ( sore) b'ue, moustache dark brown, walks tenderly; dress, sailor's coat, new light corduroy trousers, brown felt hat, new lace boots. A sailor or ship's cook; native of London.— HENRY HYLAND ( supposed false), age 29, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache light, eyes blue ; dressed in brown clothes, with cloth cap. A sailor. Both were traced to Chester, 17th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Dolgelly. NORFOLK. 25.— Norwich ( City).— For indecent assault— McDONALD WRIGHT, age 45 to 50, height about 5 ft. 7 in , complexion swarthy, moustache and few whiskers on side of face turning grey, round full features, short thick neck. A native of Boston, where he has a brother residing. May seek em- ployment as a chemist's manager or assistant. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Hitchman, Nor- wich. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 26.— Nottingham ( Boi- ough).— For failing to report— Supervisee JOHN EDWARD GILBERT Office No. 41951, age 24, height 5 ft. I in., com- plexion sallow, hair brown, eyes blue, mole left breast, " T" and blue dot bask of left forearm Sentenced at Nottingham, 1st October, 1890, to 12 months hard labour, and 2 years police super- vision, for larceny. Apprehension also sought for larceny. License Holder GEORGE WELSH, alias MER RIDAY and WILHANN, Office No. 43019, ago 37 height 5 ft. 4£ in, complexion fresh, hair brown eyes grey, scars on left eyebrow, light side of throat ( abscess), left thumb, inside right forearm, right thumb, and 3rd right finger, outside left forearm 4th left finger, and left shin, mole left ribs and left side of belly, pockmarked. Sentenced at Notting- ham, 23rd July, 1888, to 5 years penal servitude for wounding. Z I 0 250. Information to the Chief Constable, Nottingham. SUSSEX ( EAST). 2).— Hove ( Town) — Poitrait and description of HENRY PEARCE, whose apprehension is sought BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 33.— Chesham ( Ccmnty).— Sentenced to one month's imprisonment for vagrancy— FREDERICK HILLIER ( supposed false), age 26, height 5 ft. in., complexion dark, hair black, eyes dark brown, oval face, cross, heart, anchor, and bracelet tattooed on right arm, varions flags, crown, and bracelet on lett arm, cataract in left eye; dress, daik brown mixture cloth jacket and vest, cord trousers, black hard felt hat, coloured handkerchief round neck, nailed blucher boot?. States that he is a tailor, and was born in Kentish Town, London, but refuses his address. Had in his possession a pawn ticket, No. 2268, for a pair of boots pledged with M. Jacobs, 52, Liverpool- road, Islington, 20th June, 1892, in the name of Joe Button. Is supposed to he wanted for other offences. Information to Inspector Summers, Chesham. for an offence against Section 5 Criminal Liw Amendment Act, 1885, on 24th July, age about 43, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair light ( turning grey), whiskers and moustache sandy, shaves the chin, may now be clean shaved ; dress, when last seen, black coat, light plaid vest and trousers, black Oxford hat. A labourer; native of Littlehanipton. Has been in the Army. Ab- sconded 18th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Major Teevan, Chief Constable, Hove. CARNARVONSHIRE. 34— Bangor ( County).— Committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions, for indecent assault— ROBERT POUND, age 48, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, bald on front and ( op of head, nose crooked and injured, cupping marks left breast, wart on upper part of right forearm, bubo left groin, hairy chest. A native of Manchester. He tramped the country about 2 years ago, prior to his residing in this district. 35 — Bangor ( County).— Committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions, for horse stealing— JOHN THOMAS, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eye3 blue, lost two upper front teeth and one tooth left side, mole on right upper arm, C.
