All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LOXDON, S.\ Y\ 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they we sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and, address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. Gd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. S. livery announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of anofficer of not less ra. ik than Superintendent; and, ifthe name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed bu an officer of not less rank • than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, a,. d art alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted t* the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, tcill be wholly responsible for any proceedings vchio/ i may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Ctiaring Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Jfr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be » t once notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( « ) The amount of the reward. •> ( 6) The conditions on which it is payable, ( c) The person by whom it will be paid, ( oi) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. S. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holdi.. g out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to tria or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Polico Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— C. I. Department.— For fraud and em- bezzlement committed in Germany— WILHELM HAENSLER, age 34, height 5 ft. 5 in., slim build, complexion healthy, full oval face, hair and mous- tache reddish, slightly curved nose, assured de- meanour ; dress, grey jacket, light striped trousers, yellowish straw hat. A leading socialist; native of Karlsruhe, and late of Mannheim, Germany. 2.— B Division.— For violent assault— PATK. REARDON, age 25, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion swarthy, hair, moustache, and eyes dark; dress, dark coat and vest, dark cloth trousers, hard felt hat, lace boots. A native of Chelsea, London. Is supposed to be hopping at Farnham, Surrey. Warrant issued. 3.— E Division.— For obtaining, during July last, a set of four- in- hand harness by false pretences — HOWARD STRATTON, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, slight moustache, small eyes; dress, brown tweed suit, tight fitt ing trousers, black hard felt hat. A horse- dealer; native of Leamington, Warwick shire. Warrant issued. 4.— G Division. — Escaped from custody of Police, 19th ult., when charged with larceny ( shop) — FREDERICK MILLER, alias FREDERICK BERG, age 41, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, light moustache, eyes blue, scar on right side of right eye ; dress, black diagonal over- coat and vest, pepper- and- salt tweed jacket, dark tweed trousers, plaid scarf, white shirt, blick hard felt hat, Wellington boots. Native of Germany. Has been many years in England, and speaks English fluently. A diamond setter, but has led an idle life for the past 4 or 5 years. 5.— M Division.— For stealing £ 872— RICHD. W. MILLAR, age 22, height 6 ft. 1 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes hazel, tattooed on both arms; dress, black coat and vest, dark trousers, stand- up collar, small black felt hat, lace boots. A cashier; native of Notting- hill, London. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. 6— R Division. — For forgery and stealing large sums of money — GEORGE BRYCESON, age 60, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, turning grey, eyes brown, round shouldered; dress, supposed light suit, sometimes wears clerical suit. A native of Woolwich. Warrant issued. 7.— T Division .— For horse- stealing— ALBERT LOVE, alias HARRY, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair and slight moustache brown ; dress, dark tweed morning coat, and vest, cord trousers, black hard felt hat. A farrier and horse- clipper ; native of Shepherd's Bush, London. Warrant issued. 8. — Y Division. — For stealing at Muswel], 2nd inst.— A bay mare pony, 13 hands 3 in., low fore- quarters, one fetlock ( off hind leg) white, a few grey hairs in the other, long mane and dock, hair cut close to dock, scar between hind quarters, had on a leather head stall, piece of sash- line attached. — A MAN, age 40 to 45, middle height, whiskers ( all round chin) sandy, turning grey; dress, dark tweed jacket, light trousers, hard felt hat, apparently too large for him, of shabby appearance. 9.— Y Division. — For attempted murder by shooting with a revolver— WILLIAM TAYLOB, age 26, height 5 ft. 8 m., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light, eyes hazel; dress, black diagonal cutaway coat and vest, striped tweed trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots. May seek employment as a ' bus or tram driver. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. L0.- For stealing fur skins, value £ 110— LUDWIG HENRI STEHR, a German, late of 48, Bevers- brook- road, Holloway, London,' age 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., hair very dark, turning gray, black heavy moustache and whiskers, beard trimmed to a point, consumptive looking, carries his head forward; dress, light suit, soft felt hat. BEDFORDSH IRE. 11.— Bedford ( Borough).— For stealing, 30th ult.— A Premier tricycle, 36- in. side wheels, 26 in. front wheel, band brake, centre steering, plain pedals and bearing axle, transfer on front partly rubbed off.— A MAN, age 26 to 30, height 5ft. 6 in., complexion and moustache dark, impediment in speech; dress, dark grey mixture suit, mourning band round one arm of coat, straw hat with coloured band. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 12.— Isle of Ely( CWty).— For obtaining money by false pretences, 15th ult".— WALTER GRAHAM ( supposed false), age about 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 9 in., full face, hair brown, rather heavy moustache, mili- tary appearance, and of good ad dross ; dress, brown or grey overcoat, brow a check cloth trousers which he generally wears turned up at bottoms, black bowler hat, sometimes wears a light coloured cap. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1892. represents himself as ageut in advance for Lord George Sanger's Circus ( false), and makes contracts for the supply of hay, corn, etc. States that the circus • will visit the town in about eight days, draws his commission, and shortly afterwards decamps. W. G." ; 4 silver knife rests; 1 silver- backed hand- glass; 1 child's silver mug, " H. R. G." ; 1 pair of silver sugar- tongs with cutters; 1 fluted silver sugar basin, gilt mounted, medium size; 1 small silver cream jug; 2 electro- plated walnut pickers; 4 electro- plated table spoons ; 2 electro- plated preserve spoons; 12 electro- plated dessert spoons ; 2 electro- plated gravy spoons ; some electro- plated forks, large and small; 1 electio- plated meat skewer; 1 electro- plated small toast rack ; 1 small banjo- shaped clock with silver open work, on ruby velvet mount; 1 small oval clock of whitish agate, gold and turquoise setting round face ; 1 pair of dress trousers, small size; 1 thick black melton over- coat ; 1 dark- grey stockinette overcoat; I walking- stick with horn handle ; 1 black patent leather brief bag, about 18 in. long, lined with liolland— JAMES DEMPSEY, age about 28, height about 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark, full eyes, large head, dissipated look ; dressed in some of the stolen clothes. Is said to be knowu at Stock- port, Birkenhead, Liverpool, and Soutliport. — JAMES ROGERSON, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7in., hair brown, light brown moustache; dress, dark brown check coat, dark trousers, black billycock hat. Has in his possession a pedlar's certificate, renewed at Chester in 1891, on production of one granted at Newcastle- under- Lyme for 1890. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Chester. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 14.— Bridgend ( County).— For steal ing, at Tyne- month, a silver lever Waltham watch, No. 5101276 ; 3 silver curb- link albert chains ; and a plated gold albert chain, long curb link pattern — ROBERT JACKSON, age about 27, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion pale, hair ( frizzed in front and exposed to view when his hat is on) and moustache light brown, lost upper front teeth, which causes him to speak indistinctly, small lump on throat; dress, dark or grey plaid suit, black bowler hat, Oxford shoes. Carried a ground ash walking- stick with buckhorn handle, and was wearing the stolen watch and one of the stolen chains. A hair- dresser ; late of PoBtycvmmer. Stated' he is a native of Nottingham, and that he came out of the hospital there five or six months ago. Is known to have worked with a Mr. Carter, Market- place, Nottingham. Absconded 28th ult. Warrant issued. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. 15.— Bridgend ( County).— For embezzlement and forgery— JAMES LOVELUCK, age 54, height 5 ft. 6 in., round, fall and very red face, hair, whiskers, and moustache grey, eyes dark, red nose, short neck, thick hands, and long fingers, short lega, is subject to severe attacks of coughing, speaks French ; usually dresses in dark clothes. A ship- broker and merchant; late of Aberavon, which place be left on Ike 18th July last, for Paddington. Warrant issued. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. Information to Sapt. Thomas, Bridgend. HAMPSHIRE. 16.— Winchester ( City).— For deserting his four children— DENNIS LEAHY, alias WILLIAM JOHNSON, born in India, age 40, height 5 ft. 10^ in., complexion fresh, oval face, hair brown ( turning grey), bald on front of head, light brown moustache and beard, eyes hazel, scar on right cheek, bird tattooed on front of left forearm, cupping marks right hip, scar back of left shoulder and centre of back, is very excitable ; dress, black short jacket and guernsey, black hard felt hat. Is likely to seek employment at docks, & 3. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Morton, Win- cheater. 17.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing a silver lever watch, No. 29024; and a gold albert, cable patter*— AMELIA SHAW, alias WEST- BROOK, HAMILTON, and WILLSON, age 25, height 5 ft. 2 in., rather stout build, complexion fair, hair brown, eyes hazel, front teeth decayed ; dressed, when last seen, in marone or chocolate- coloured dress, black hat, white cotton gloves. Carried an umbrella. Occasionally wears a light grey dress. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Cosser, Ports- mouth. LANCASHIRE. 18.— Chorley ( County).— For failing to report — Supervisee JANE JACKSON, alias JANE WALKER, Office No. 24616, age 47, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes blue, scar on right shin, lost several top teeth. Sentenced at Salford, 7th July, 1879, to 7 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision for felony. F 75.— Supervisee THOMAS SEPHTON, Office No. 43507, age 37, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, eyes brown, scar left eyebrow, right kneo, and boil scar centre of back, third right finger deformed. Sentenced at Preston, 17th February, 1892, to 6 months hard labour and 2 years police supervision for larceny. Information to Supt. Norris, Chorle. y. 19.— Leigh ( Count//). — For embezzlement — THOMAS GRUNDY,' a colliery salesman, age 31, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache and small whiskers brown, Roman nose, large scar left side of face; dressed, when last seen, in dark coat and vest, snuff- coloured trousers, brown hat. Ho is supposed to have gone to America. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Higginbotham, Leigh. 20.— Rochdale ( County). — Expiree JAMES MABANE, Office No. 35156, Case No. 18, 19th ult., mot now wanted. 21.— Rochdale ( County).— JAMES MABANE and GEO. or JAMES TAYLOR, Case No. 16, 12th ult., not now wanted. 22.— Salford ( Borough).— For failing to report — Supervisee JOHN ANDERSON, alias CANA- VAN, Office No. 41240, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, scar left shin and left shoulder, mole on right breast and right forearm, anchor outside right forearm, J. C. J. C., cross and square on left forearm. Sentenced at Manchester, 17th April, 1890, to 12 months hard labour and three years police supervision for larceny. MONTGOMERYSHIRE. 25.— Welshpool ( County).— For attempting to carnally know a girl, age 15— PRYCE WILLIAMS, age about 50, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair, side whiskers, aud moustache dark brown, lost third finger of left hand, both eyes blackened, speaks broken English ; dress, black coat and vest, hard felt hat. A farmer; native of Meifod. It is supposed that he will endeavour to go abroad. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Crowden, Welshpool. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 26.— Northampton ( Borough).— For failing to report — Supervisee ELLEN EVANS, alias MARY ANN MOORE, and SARAH LEE, Office No. 43165, age 65, height 5 ft. 1 in. complexion fresh, hair grey, eyes hazel, scar left of head, and left of nose. Sentenced at Northampton, 29th June, 1891, to 12 months hard labour and 4 years police supervision for larceny. SHROPSHIRE. 27.— Wellington ( County).— For stealing, 23rd ult., brass engine fittings ( recovered)— THOMAS BROTHWOOD, alias ROWSON, age 35, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion ( freckled) sallow, hair and eyes brown, moustache ( small) light brown, blinks when talking ; dross, black cloth jacket, very much faded, old light plaid trousers, light cloth cap with dark stripes, dirty white neckerchief. A pnddler ; native of St. George's, Salop. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Supt. Edwards, Wellington. SUFFOLK. 28.— Ipswich ( Borough).— For stealing a gold watch and chain, and other articles — SELINA BLAKELEY, age about 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., weight about 8 stone, complexion swarthy, hair ( wavy) and eyes dark, large nose, rather plain look- ing, slight Irish accent; dress, green dress, velvet sleeves, velvet tabs round skirt, dark green felt hat, trimmed with velvet to match. A domestic servant. Warrant issued. Information to Lt.- Col. Russell, Chief Constable, Ipswich. SURREY. 29.— Do r ki ng ( County).— For withholding books and moneys belonging to the Dorking, Leatherhead, and District Starr Bowkett Building Society, of which society he was secretary— HENRY REEVES, a schoolmaster, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, complexion fair, full face, hair, _ whiskers, moustache, and eyebrows black, very active ; dress, black clothes; generally swings his walking- stick, Native of Bristol. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Collis, Dorking. SUSSEX ( EAST). 30.— Hastings ( Borough).— For obtaining money by false pretences— THOMAS SATCHELL, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair light brown, short beard and moustache, crossed flags and crown tattooed on left forearm; dress, dark blue cloth jacket and vest, dark tweed trousers, black hard felt hat with narrow brim. This man represents himself as a pensioned sergeant from the Grenadier Guards, and calls upon friends of men serving in that regiment. Warrant issued. WARWICKSHIRE. 32.— Birmingham ( Borough).— For stealing £ 42 10s. 2d., 27th ult. — AUGUSTUS COS- BOURNE, alias HART, age 18, height 5 ft. 6 in., • complexion pale, hair brown, full grey eyes, pro- minent teeth in upper jaw, peculiar action of upper lip when speaking, bald patch, about the size of a shilling, on top of head ; dress, double- breasted dark serge jacket and vest, dark striped trousers, button boots, wore a Canadian gold chain, fetter link pattern, compass pendant, and a Waterbury watch. A clerk ; native of Birmingham. Absconded 29th ult. Will try to emigrate. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Farndale, Bir- mingham. YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING). 33.— Wakefield ( City).— For failing to report — Licence Holder JOHN THOMAS THORNLEY, Office No. 43343, age 36, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion fresh, hair sandy, eyes hazel ( weak), scar right shin ( wound), left ankle twisted inwards, two lumps on back, bones projecting, freckled. Sen- tenced at Manchester, 29th October, 1887 to 5 years penal servitude for burglary. Licensed 29th July, 1892. I. N. 992. Information to the Chief Constable of Wakefield. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 34.— G Division. — Remanded at Clerkenwell Police Court till noon, 9th inst., for stealing and receiving a van— Expiree JOSEPH CHAFF, alias COOPER, Office No. 37177, age 39, height 5ft. 1 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes grey, deeply pockmarked; dress, black diagonal jacket and vest, brown trousers ( black stripe), blue hand- kerchief ( white spots), hard felt hat, side- spring boots.— GEORGE ROBINSON, a greengrocer, of Limes- cottages, Merton- road, Wandsworth, age 25, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and mous- tache black, eyes grey, very large scars on right arm ; dress, grey mixture tweed jacket and trousers, black diagonal vest, black melton overcoat, lace boots, hard felt hat. Found in their possession, supposed stolen, 2 light spring carts, both apparently recently altered and newly painted. ESSEX. 35.— Chelmsford ( County). — Remanded for stealing a cob, cart, harness, whip, and nosebag ( recovered)— JOHN MUNDAY ( see Case No. 71, 5th ult.), age 61, height 5 ft. 7| in., complexion fresh, hair turning grey, eyes brown, small boil scar on each side of neck, wart back of right shoulder, mole on left shoulder- blade, small scar inside right forearm, scar on left knee and back of right thigh. About 1.15 p. m., on the above date, a well- dressed woman drove to the shop in a cab, and asked to be shown some carriage clocks. The young lady in charge of the shop brought out some clocks, as the woman in the cab stated she was unable to walk through a slight accident. While the young lady was showing the clocks the cabman saw a man go into the shop, and at the same time another man came up and asked the cabman the way to the railway station, thus drawing his attention away from the shop. Tho woman did not purchase a clock, but stated that some one would call later in the afternoon, and then requested the cabman to drive to the railway station; on the way there the woman stopped the cabman, got out and walked away without any sign of lameness. Description of woman— Age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., dark complexion, black hair, rather small features, dark eyes; dressed in a grey dress, with a light hat with narrow brim and light veil.
