All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should he addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and Hie exact conditions be clearly stated. 8. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. Sd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to I be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed bu an officer HEG- TJLA. TIONS. than Inspector, or analogous thereto. officer of not less rank 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted t » the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whizn may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forxarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They mutt be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Co.," Post Office Order payable at Cnarmg Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- ations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of erime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( à) The amount of the reward. ( á) The conditions on which it is payable. ( o) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 3. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan " Police Force at which Notices cm be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— B Division.— For stealing, 22nd inst., a dark brown portmanteau, " Captain Walsh, 22nd Cheshire Regt." on side ; 7 white linen shirts, " W. P. H. W." on tails; 2 pairs boots, " Samuel Winter" stamped inside; and some handkerchiefs marked " W. P. H. W."— CHARLES DUNKLEY, age 23£, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown; dress, dark grey jacket, light trousers, black hard felt hat. A groom ; native of Church Brampton, Northampton. Is a deserter from 2nd Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. Attempted to commit a larcony at Lewes on L8th inst. 2. — F Division.— For obtaining, during the past six weeks, several sums of money by false and fraudulent pretences— GEORGE WILLIAM BUR- RIDGE, alias PAGE, late of 37, Hereford- road, Bayswater, age 45, height 6 ft., stout build, com- plexion sallow, round full face, hair dark, but very bald on top, remarkably heavy long dark moustache, eyes dark, long straight nose ; dress, snuff- coloured tweed morning suit, or dark coat and vest, grey trousers, high silk hat. Usually carries a black bag. — ISABEL BURRIDGE, wife of the above, age 50, height 5 ft. 8 in., very stout build, rather red face, brown eyes, teeth projeot in front; dress, brown stuff dress, trimmed brown velvet, brown bonnet, trimmed brown wings, or a black turn- up hat, trimmed black velvet and yellow flowers. Has the appearance of being addicted to drink. These persons open what they term a domestic agency, advertise in the " Daily Telegraph " for lady clerks to learn the business, obtain premiums from them, generally about £ 10, and then abscond. They recently kept a registry office in the name of " Rose," in the vicinity of Victoria Station. Are now believed to be moving about in the provinces. Warrant issued. 3.— N Division. — For stealing 1 black skirt; 1 black silk bodice; 1 black f cloak; 1 walnut writing desk, with initials A. G. on lid, containing the marriage certificate of S. W. Crapnell and Agnes Gordon ; 6 electro- plated dessert spoons ; 6 electro- plated tea spoons ; 6 electro- plated forks; 2 fish knives and forks with pearl handles; 5 dessert knives and forks with bone handles; 4 silver tea spoons; 2 silver salt spoons with " G" on handles; 1 silver sugar sifter— AMY STEADHAM, age 27 or 28, medium height, hair and eyes dark, mole right side of chin, may be wearing some of the stolen clothes. Is likely to be heard of at 7, Abbey- road, Torquay. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 4.— For stealing £ 72, 20th inst. — ISAACS alias DOLLAR, a Jew, native of London, age 42, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, hair black, eyes dark, large nose; dress, brown check coat and vest, striped trousers, black hard felt hat, or in new clothes. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. 5.— For fraud— JOHN BRENNAND CHAFFER, known as CAPTAIN CHAFFERS, late of 13, Bywater- street, Chelsea, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 10 in., thin build, hair, long beard, and moustache brown; dress, brownish coat and trousers, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. £ 50 REWARD. 6. — Woodcut portrait and description of IGNATIUS WIEDER, late of 1, Piccadilly, and Newport House, Great Newport- street, London, whose apprehension is sought for stealing jewellery, age 28, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion sallow, hair ( wavy) brown, eyes grey, large mouth and ears, thick lips, upper lip twitches when talking ; dress, black coat and vest, high silk hat, patent leather boots. A jeweller and practical watchmaker native of Austria. Speaks good English. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Messrs. Lewis & Lewis, Solicitors, Ely- place, London, E. C., to any person giving such information as shall ( within 3 months from 8th inst.) lead to the appre- hension and conviction of Wieder. Information to Supt. Mc William, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. 2 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. TUESDAY, JULY 438, 1892. BEDFORDSHIRE. 7.— Luton ( County). — For larceny ( lodger) — A MAN, age about 40, height about 5 ft. G in , hair ( cut short) turning grey, and moustache dark dress, brown coat, dark striped trousers, hard felt hat, Stated he was employed to erect a telephone at Leagravo Railway Station ( Talse), and obtained lodgings on 14' di inst., and breakfast next morning, when he left, without paying, after stealing the sum of 5s. Ho obtained food and lodgings at two places nt Luton on the same pretence, and left with- out paying. Information to Supt. Tydeman, Luton. BERKSHIRE. 8.— Maidenhead ( Borough). — For stealing a basket containing carpenter's tools ( partly re covered) at Gerrard's Cross — A MAN, age 26, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in , eomplexion fair, hair ( inclined to curl) light brown, small light moustache, eyes light; dress, dark coat and vest, old brown trousers, white apron twisted round waist, hard felt hat. Frequents public houses. Supposed to be a car- penter, and that his father keeps a greengrocer's shop at Hammersmith, London. Information to Supt. Taylor, Maidenhead. 9.— Reading( BoroM^ Ti).— Forstealing, 21st inst., a Gorton cross- framed safety bicycle, front felloe has been damaged and re- braized, pedals much worn, single bell ( dead sound), two transfers on back mud gu^ rd (" Gorton and Co., Coventry and London Road Cycle Co., 82, London Street, Reading"), red tyres, handle bar turned and f. istened with a large clip in centre— A man, who gave the name of " GARRATT," age about 35, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion and hair dark, moustache black; dress, dark clothes, low shoes, black hard felt hat. 10.— Reading ( Borough).— For obtaining money on 9th inst., by means of a fictitious cheque— A man wlo gave the name of RUPERT GREEN, age about 25, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, very slight light moustache, round face; smart and gentlemanly appearance, speaks with slight Scotch accent; dress, dark suit, black hard felt hat. He obtained two blank cheques of the Capital and Counties Bank, Reading Branch, on the pre- tence that they were for a dentist in the town. Having filled in one for £ 11 4s., using the names of two well- known doctors in Reading, he took it to a grocer's shop and asked the manager to cash it for the medical gent'eman whose name appeared on it. He is supposed to have still in his possession the other blank cheque, No. L 11520, and will, no doubt, endeavour to obtain money by it. ( See Case No. 25.) Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 11.— High Wycombe ( Borough).— For obtain- ing money by false pretences— E. HICKS ( sup- posed false), age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., < omplexion fresh, hair brown, eyes light, face some- what flushed as if from excessive drinking; of gentlemanly appearance and good address. This man called on a firm of estate agents and enquired for a house to let, obtained a circular relating to a house, after which he called at a ladies' Keoiinary and stated that he had been sent by the <• fate agents to solicit an insertion in their list for procuring pupils, made a charge of 10s. 6d., for which he gave a receipt on the back of the circular, lie also gave the name and address of Colonel J. F. Owen, 14, Cranley- gardens, Kensington, S. W., for whom he stated he was acting, a statement which has been found to be false. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Sparling, High Wycombe. DURHAM. 12.— Consett ( County). — For embezzling £ 35 16s. 3d., the moneys of the Commissioners of Ir. come Tax— ADAM BRODIE, chartered account- ;; ntandauctioneer, age52, heightabout 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark, full beard ( turning grey), l as a swelling on underside of jaw, walks lame, his i ight leg being bhorter than the left, wears a high- heeled boot with thick sole; dressed in frock u iat and silk hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Oliver, Coneett. ESSEX. 13.— Southend ( County).— For stealing, 6th inst,— 1 silver watch, open face, white dial, steel hands and seconds hand ; 1 long black Melton over- coat, black lining, very deep collar, " Mills & Co." on tab ; 1 pair of sidespring boots, size 8, left sole patched with a piece of belt— GEORGE WATTS, a labourer, age 18 to 20, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, full fat face, very much pitted with small- pox; dress, grey mixture tweed coat ( much worn), blue cloth trousers, light c* p,' is wearing the stolen boots, and ( supposed) overcoat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hawtree, Southend. 14.— Witham ( County).— For obtaining £ 6 by false pretences, 7th inst.— Two men, ( 1) J. CROSS ( supposed false), age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, moustache brown, eyes hazel; dress, brown coat, grey striped trousers, hard felt hat, low ankle shoes. ( 2nd), age about 21 or 25, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, com- plexion pale, hair ( inclined to curl) and moustache black, eyes dark ; dress, black coat and vest, grey striped trousers, black hard felt hat, low ankle shoes. These meu travel together hawking an inferior class of cloth. They call at honses, state that they are in the employ of a Mr. Wilson who resides in a neighbouring town, and that they are anxious to obtain a loan, which they promise to return with interest, and leave as security pieces of cloth which are only about one- third value of the amount borrowed. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Allen, Witham. 15.— Colchester ( Borough).— For deserting his wife and two children— HARRY PARRY, a barber, age 43, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion, hair, and moustache ( turning grey) dark, eyes brown. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Coombs, Col- chester. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 16. — Cardiff ( Borough). — For stealing, 22nd inst., a bay mare, 14' 2 hands, well bred, rising 7 years, mark ( size of a shilling) back of near fore- leg at knee, which is slightly swollen; a set of black leather harness, with broad white metal mounts; a pair of newly- plated carriage lamps; a dark blue village gig, with blue corded cushions; a set of black leather pony harness, brass mounted, nearly new; a saddle and bridle, nearly new — JOHN COOPER, alias JACKSON, a low- class horse- dealer, sometimes nicknamed " A 1 " or " Wowser," a* e about 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stoutish build, complexion florid, hair brown, heavy auburn or reddish brown moustache, inclined to be round- shouldered, of dissipated appearance; when last seen was wearing a dark- ribbed suit and light brown hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. HEREFORDSHIRE. 17.— Bromyard ( County).— For failing to report.— Supervisee RICHARD PRICE, Office No. 27524, age 39, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion pale, hair black, eyes brown, nose fractured, scars above right temple, on right shoulder blade, light eyelid ( blue), and several on scalp, mole on right forearm. Sentenced at Worcester, 4th April, 1831, to 5 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision for larceny. H 352. Information to Supt. Lewis, Bromyard. HERTFORDSHIRE. 18.— Hitchin ( County).— For burglary, at San- don, and stealing a dark red clasp purse containing one spade guinea dated 1719 and one- half spade guinea, both with holes in them; 2 old fourpenny pieces with holes in them, 3s. cash, and on 22nd inst., a double- cased old- fashioned silver watch, " Mr. or Wm. Dererell" marked on outside case, maker Pearce, Pelham St., Nottingham"; A BOY, age 15, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eye3 grey, scar about rt ear which shows plainly when hair is short, impediment in speech ; dress dark plaid jacket suit, new dark cloth cap, new thin leather braces stamped with flowers, chocolate coloured socks. A native of Sandgate, Kent. ( Same as described in Case No. 26, 20th May last). Information to Supt. Reynolds, Hitchin. LANCASHIRE. 19.— Blackburn ( County).— For failing to report— License Holder GEORGE IIANNON, Office No. 42527, age 25, height 5 ft. 7i in,, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, 2 scars on fore- head, 1 right thumb, and several on head, blue dot- outside light forearm. Sentenced at Salford, 5th O I December, 1837, to 5 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision, for larceny. License, 24th Feb , 1892. N 566. Information to Supt, Myers, Blackburn. 20— Church ( County).— For stealing a pair of trousers ( recovered) at Oswaldtwis. le, between 18th and 20th inst.— JOHN SYKES, age 38, height 5 ft. 5^ in., complexion sallow, long face, hair and eyes grey, blue dot tattooed back of right wrist, three burn marks right arm; dress, black coat and vest, light blue striped trousers, light brown hat, lace boots, all much WOID. A chair maker; native of Manchester. Tramps from town to town, frequents low beer and public houses, and may sometimes bo seen selling fly catchers. He is well known in most towns in Lancashire and Yorkshire. Was sentenced to 1 months imprisonment, 2nd May, 1888, for stealing stockings, and to 5 months imprisonment at Goole, on 13th Juno, 1888, for stealing boots, in the name of Peter Cameron; to 3 months imprisonment at Doncaster, in 1889, for stealing coats; to 6 months imprisonment at Wake- field in 1890, in the name of John Hughe3; to 14 days imprisonment for felony, at Blackburn, in July, 1891 ; and to 1 months imprisonment for stealing a coat at Blackburn, in August, 1891, in the name of John Sykes. Information to Supt. Campbell, Church. 21.— Leigh ( County).— For stealing 2 tin boxes, an album, and £ 3 cash— A MAN and WOMAN, lst, CHARLES LEE, age about 28, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved, round face ; dress, plaid coat and vest, grey striped trousers, hard felt hat. A collier, native of Barnsley or Dodworth, York. He took with him 3 picks, 1 hammer, and a wedge, all marked " Baxter, maker, Tyldesley"; 2nd, EMMA BURGESS, age 28, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes grey, good looking; dress, dark blue jacket, with bronze buttons, black dress; she is fond of public houses and pleasure resorts. Are accom- panied by a boy, GEORGE HOWARD BURGESS, age 8 years, complexion fresh, very dark looking, hair dark brown, eyes grey; dress, dark blue knickerbocker suit, round hat, trimmed with mili- tary braid. They are believed to have booked from Manchester to Sheffield on the 18th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Higginbotham, Leigh. 22. — Rawtenstall ( County). — Portrait and description of THOMAS BOYD RIDDALL, a medical student, whose apprehension is sought for stealing, 11th ult.— 9 boxes of cigarettes ; a plated folding stethoscope, which has a small piece chipped off the ear end ; and the sum of £ 6. Age 25, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in,, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache ( heavy) light brown, large brown eyes, good teeth, large scar from burn back of neck at bottom of hair. A native of Ayr, where his father is a medical practitioner. Is known at Glasgow FRIDAY, JJJ. LT 439, 1892. Information to Sapt, Procter, Ilawtenstall. 23— Salford ( Borough).— For stealing, 24th cr • 25th inst., a man's single breasted black worsted jacket and vest, broad striped pattern, usual pockets — nearly new; a gr< y aud white che^ k silk hand- kerchief, a pair of men's lacc boots, size G. stitched, square toe- caps— nearly new ; a lady's black morocco leather hand- bag, about 12 in. long, fastens with brass slide; a pair of lady's side f- pring boots, stitched, levant tops, patent leather toe- caps, size 7 — nearly new ; a vvomin's grey stuff dress, plain make, part worn; a lady's navy blue clothshort jacket, lined with sateen to match, in good condition ; and a lady's black blouse with white spots— JANE HOLMES, a servant, age about 35, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair black, may be wearing some of the stolen property. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Salford. LINCOLNSHIRE. 24.— Lincoln ( City).— For failing to jeport— Supervisee CHARLES WALSHAM, Office No. 43321, age 43, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes grey, scar bridge of nose and over right eye, ring 2nd right finger. Sentenced at Lincoln Lindsey Sessions, 8th January, 1892, to t> months hard labour, and 1 year police supervision, for larceny. Information to the Chief Constable of Lincoln. NORFOLK. 25.— Norwich ( City).— For obtaining £ 9 12s. by means of a fictitious cheque, 26th inst.— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 fr. 9 in., slight build, com- plexion and hair dark, round features, of gentle- manly appearance and address ; dress, black coat and vest, black hard felt hat, was wearing a plain gold ring. This man obtained two blank cheques on Messrs Gurney, Birkbeck, Barclay and Buxton, from a tradesman, representing that they were required by a well- known medical gentleman. He afterwards filled in one of the cheques, took it to a butcher's shop, and asked to have it cashed for the medical gentleman whose name appeared upon it. He is supposed to have the other blank cheque, No D 82725, in his possession, and will no doubt - endeavour to obtain money by it. ( See cases No. 21, 22nd inst., and No. 10 of this issue.) Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Hitchman, Norwich. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 26.— Northampton ( County).— For stealing, from his lodgings, a lady's silver geneva watch, chased back HARRIS, age about 44, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sunburnt, hair and moustache dark ( turning grey), eyes brown, sunken cheeks, pointed chin, dots in form of a triangle tattooed on one hand; dress, black check cutaway coat bound with braid, " Barnsley, tailor," on tab, black vest, brown plaid trousers, stand- up collar with corners turned down, blucher boots, black hard felt hat, ( Same as described in Case No. 8, 22nd inst.) Information to Supt. Alexander, County Con- stabulary, Northampton. NORTHUMBERLAND. 27.— Newcastle- On- Tyne ( City).— For fail- ing to report— License Holder SARAH ORD, alias ELIZABETH ROBSON, Office No. 43055, age 58: height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes blue, scars right eyebrow and right cheek, small birthmark left eyelid, lost three upper front teeth Sentenced at Durham 21st February, 1889, to 5 years penal servitude for felony. Licensed 21st June, 1892. DP, 192. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Newcastle on- Tyne. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 28.— Nottingham ( Borough).— For failing to report— Supervisee FREDERICK BYRON, Office No. 42826, age 37, height 5 ft. 6£ in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes brown, scar corner of left eye, small mole right breast. WARWICKSHIRE. 29.— Leamington ( Borough).— For obtaining money by false pretences— A man who gave the name of PARNELL, age 21 to 25, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in , complexion fair, moustache light, eyeballs protrude slightly; dress, dark coat, light check mixture trousers ; usually wears eye- glasses. Tnis man calls at newspaper offices, and reprcssnts him- self as a reporter, and that his failing eyesight lost him his situation. At Leamington ho represented himself as Mr. Parnell, late of the " Hackney and Kingsland Gazette." Is believed to be the same man who was convicted, iu the name of Selpho, at Northampton last year, for a similar offence. Warrant issued. 30.— Leamington ( Borough).— For obtain- ing money by false pretences, viz., by an advertising swindle and fictitious cheque— A man, who signed receipts in the name of " E. EDWARDS, of 10, Thavies Inn, Holborn Circus, London, E. C." Age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 iD., stoutish build, complexion sallow, long nose, hair dark brown, rather heavy moustache and mutton- chop whiskers, eyes blue; dress, dark coloured overcoat with velvet collar, black morning coat, vest, and trousers, high silk hat with broad black band, black bow necktie, sometimes wears a light grey tennis cap ; had with him a black bag and brown paper parcel. His modus operandi is to call upon tradesmen solicit- ing advertisements for portfolio covers for the " Illustrated London News," " Graphic," " Queen," Punch," " Tit Bits," & c., promising on behalf of " The Union Company" to supply the foregoing papers free for twelve months to all the principal hotels in the town. He has covers of different sizes with him, gets the advertisements printed and gums them on the covers, and draws payments, after which no more is heard of him or the free papers. He lodged at a good hotel, and upon leaving induced the mangeress to change him a cheque for £ 7 5s. drawn on Messrs. Ransom, Bouverie & Co., 1, Pall Mall East ( amalgamated long since with Barclay's), by J. Harding & Co., in favour of E. Edwards, ica returned marked " no account." At the address, 10, Thavies Inn, he has had a small base- ment office for about two months. At first was painted up " The Rosena Company;" this name has been taken down, and nothing now indicates that either Mr. Edwards or the " Union " Co. have offices there.
