AH announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOE OF TIIE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are suj/ iaent to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and cite exact conditions be clearly stated. I. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an off).- er of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to le inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank ihan Inspector. or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be c+ yrehended or of stolen property bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. g. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted ta the POLICE GAZEITE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, trill be wholly responsible for any proceedings whi;/ i mag resu't from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forxarded so as to be receired not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond If Co.," Post Office Order payable at Cnu.- mg Cross, Postal Order, or ta Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to tho non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be once notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- ations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( à) The amount of the reward. ( á) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 3. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTI.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan foUce Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— B Division.— For embezzling £ 3 4s. 8d.— ARTHUR WOODHOUSE, age 21, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, tattooed both forearms; dress, brown check jacket suit, brown boots, black hard felt hat. A native of Portobello, Edinburgh. Warrant issued. 2. — D Division. — For non- appearance to a summons, 25th ult., for keeping a common gaming house — HENRY ALBERT GODDEN, age 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, complexion sallow, full round face, hair, side whiskers, and moustache dark brown; dress, dark clothes, black felt hat, brown leather boots. A betting man ; native of London. Will probably be found at race- meetings, and other resorts of sporting men. Warrant issued. 3.— E Division. — For larceny ( bailee)— IGNATIUS WIEDER, age 28, tall and slim, com- plexion sallow, hair brown, slight dark moustache, eyes grey, prominent cheekbones ; dress, black coat and vest, light trousers, patent leather boots, high silk hat. Warrant issued. 4.— K Division.— For stealing, 21st ulto. — A roan mare pony, 11^ hands ; a set of silver- platsd harness; and a square front well trap, picked out red, with brown cushions— A MAN, age 28, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair and slight moustache light; dress, black diagonal suit, hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 5.— P Division.— For stealing, 31st May last, a lady's silver geneva watch, chased back, short silver chain, link pattern, with tassels at end at- tached — WILLIAM WALTERS, age 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( inclined to curl) dark, eyes hazel; dress, dust overcoat, black jacket and vest, light tweed trousers, button boots, light cap; a native of Hastings. Supposed known at St. Leonard's, Forest Horsham, and Maidstone. 6. — p Division. — For obtaining a bicycle which was advertised for sale, by false representa- tions— H. CALLABY, alias CULLABY and VER- NON, age 32, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion and hair ( wavy) dark, front teeth project; dress, dark clothes and hard felt hat. Has been employed in Bristol and other parts of the country as canvasser for Messrs. A. & G. Taylor, photographers, and it is supposed that he is still representing himself as being so employed. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 7. — For stealing proceeds of a cheque for £ 188 16s.— RUPERT STAFFORD STEPHENS, an outside broker, late of 3, Copthall Chambers, City, and 39, Agincourt- road, Hampstead, age about 27, height about 5 ft. 5 in., hair and moustache light, eyes blue; dresses well, and wears patent leather shoes. Is now supposed to be attending race meet- ings as a bookmaker in name of " Sid Freeman." May assume the name of Turnbull or Humphreys. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. AYRSHIRE. 8. — Ayr ( Burgh). — For assault and robbery, 26th ult.— Two men, ( 1st), WILLIAM SMITH, alias THOMSON, age 23, height 5 ft. 4 in., com- plexion fresh, round face, hair brown, inclined to curl in front, no whiskers, slight moustache, eyes grey, soldier tattooed on left forearm, speaks with Scotch dialect; dress, coat, vest, and trousers, all different in pattern, the trouser material being the darkest, bottoms of trousers wide, black silk cap, old brown check shirt, torn at shouldei- 3, steel- grey militia socks with red stripe across end of toes, heavy lace boots, right boot cnt near toe- cap. A labourer; said to belong to Paisley. ( 2nd), JAMES McKENDRICK or ORR, age 22, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion dark, hair light, slight moustache, no - whiskers or beard ; dress, black cord jacket, black moleskin trousers, wide at bottoms, worn, red muffler or handkerchief round neck, black silk cap with peak. A labourer; said to belong to Glasgow. Both work at railways, stay at common lodging- houses, and keep company with loose women. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McKay, Ayr. BEDFORDSHIRE. 9. — Bedford ( Borough). — For stealing a British Star Safety bicycle, coiled spring between seat pillar and back fork, plating worn, one tyre cut through, one new rubber pedal— A man, who gave the name of SHAW, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion and moustache dark ; dress, dark coat, light trousers, light tie with blue stripes. Stated he represented the Prudential Assurance Company. Information to Chief Constable Thode, Bedford. BERKSHIRE. 10.— Maidenhead ( County).— For houses breaking at Cookham, 18th ult., and stealiug a lady's silver watch, " Kendall & Dent" on dial; a gentleman's watch; a silver albert chain, curb pattern ; a half- moon gold brooch, with 3 or 1 stars THE POLICE GAZETTE. DORSETSHIRE. 11.— Wimbourne { County).— For stealing £ 14 at Kinson, 22nd ult.— CHARLES STEVENS age about 44, height 5 ft. 7 in., very stout, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey and getting bald) brown, whiskers and moustache brown, erup- tion left side of face, back of neck and on one arm ; dress, black coat or jacket and vest, grey trousers, black hard hat. A journeyman baker; stated ho is a native of Tunbridge. Is a heavy drinker, takes great interest in racing and betting, and knows London and neighbourhood well. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marsh, Wimborne. ESSEX. 12.— Brentwood { County). — For stealing silver geneva watch, maker " Thomas Roskill, Liverpool," white dial, steel hands ; a lady's small gold watch; a clerical coat, and a white straw hat with black band— A MAN, age 40 to 50, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion and hair dark, small dark moustache, no whiskers; dress, dark cardigan jacket, brown striped trousers, white collar and striped tie, white straw hat or soft billycock. Information to Supt. Dob son, Brentwood. 13.— Chelmsford { County).— For obtaining heifers by false pretences, on 11th June, 1891- HENRY ARTHUR BUNN, age about 25, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair, small side whiskers and moustache dark brown, eyes grey Roman nose, walks with a swinging gait and carries his head forward, i3 very fond of smoking, usually using a wooden pipe, always writes with his left hand. A dealer; native of Rettenden, Essex. Absconded 17th July, 1891. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable, Somerset, Chelmsford, 14.— Southend { County). — For indecently assaulting a girl, age 10 years, at Great Stambridge, on 26th ult.— A man known as " SOLDIER JACK," a labourer, age about 36, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion tanned, hair light brown, eyes grey, clean shaved, tattoo marks on wrists; dress, corduroy trousers and vest with white pearl buttons, no jacket, skull cap with peak, white neckerchief. Has been a soldier. Warrant issued. 15.— Southend { County). — For stealing the sum of 14s., on 21st ult.— AIJICE MARY OLDEN, age 15^, height 5 ft, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel; dress, black lace hat, trimmed with salmon- coloured ribbon, fawn- colour dress, white silk handkerchief round neck, brown kid gloves, button boots; carried a black alpaca um- brella with white bone knob, and a brown paper parcel, containing clothing. A pupil teacher ; native of Shoeburyness, Essex. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hawtree, Southend. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 16.— Chipping Sodbury { County). — For shooting with intent to do bodily harm, at Yale, on 16th ult.— A MAN, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion dark, hair very dark or black, eyes dark, of gentlemanly appearance and good address; dress, dark grey suit, white shirt or front, brown or tan shoes, hard felt hat with straight brim. Supposed to be an Italian. Information to Supt. Critchley, Chipping Sodbury. HERTFORDSHIRE. 17.— Hertford { County).— For committing acts ' A gross indecency with iiiiother malo person at Ofi. sndoD.— EDWARD JOHN EDWARDS, a cler^ ymi. n of the Church of England ( see Case No. 97, 17th ult.), ago 42, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., stout, complexion pale, hair ( cut short) black, no whiskers or moustache, eyes dark grey, thick colour less lips, good set of teeth, broad shoulders, native of Deal, Kent. Warrant issued. Information to Snpt. Parish, Hertford. LANCASHIRE. 18.— Warrington { Borough).— For neglecting his wife and family — EDWARD ARTHUR ASHTON, age 42, height 5 ft. 10| in., complexion fresh, hair brown, well dressed, of gentlemanly appearance. A comedian, of London, where ho is well known amongst comedians playing at theatres He acted quite recently at the Elephant and Castle Theatre, London, for a week. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Hunt, Warrington NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 19.— Kettering { County).— For embezzliug £ 6 2s. 0d., 24th ult.— HARRY BERTRAM, age about 25, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fair, hair light, moustache of a few weeks' growth, otherwise clean shaved, eyes grey, large head, prominent fore- head, walks with slouching gait, blue ring tattooed on one finger ( supposed right hand); dress, old black cloth jacket, black diagonal vest and trousers, all too large for him, black felt hat, lace boots ( nearly new). A clerk or porter, supposed native of Manchester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hensher, Kettering. 20.— Peterborough { City).— For uttering worthless cheque, No. 26639, upon the National Provincial Bank of England, St. Martins- le- Grand Branch, and obtaining money and goods to the value of £ 5 17s. 6d., on 23rd ult.— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., thick- set, complexion, hair, whiskers, moustache, and eyes ( full) dark; dress, dark jacket and vest, dark striped cloth trousers, turn- down collar, striped tie, heavy lace boots, black felt hat; had the appearance of a mechanic, and called himself an electrical engineer. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Lawson, Peter- borough. 21.— Northampton { Borough).— For obtaining a staff- sergeant's belt by false pretences, on 17th ult. A man who gave the name of HARRY ALEX ANDE R age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair ( cut short) tnrning grey; dressed apparently in naval uniform, with crown, star, and cross- flags on coat, and crown on cap. Stated he was warrant officer on H. M. S. " Swiftsure," lying at Portsmouth, and requested a sergeant at the Militia Stores to lend him a belt for the purpose of having his portrait taken. He also produced some papers, pur- porting to show that he was entitled to a large sum of money from the Army Pay Department. He also apparently visited the Military Depot at Bed- ford, on same date, where he obtained a sword and jacket, and is supposed to have left about 11 a. m., 18th, for Leicester. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Mardlin, North- ampton. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 22.— M an sfi e I d { County).— For obtaining money by false pretences — JOHN BOULTON, age 31, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, long brown moustache, eyes hazel. Served in the Royal Marines, and, uutil recently, was recruiting sergeant at Mansfield. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Tomasson, Mansfield. SHROPSHIRE. £ 2 REWARD. 23— Wellington { County).— For stealing, at Chetwynd, lUth ult, a diamond frame model F. Premier safety bicycle, No. 43457 on handle bar, no brake, two lamp rests, one on head and one on hub, may have one new lamp, ordinary tyres, black ena- melled all over, makers— Hillman, Herbert & Cooper, Coventry— ROWLAND TOWERS, age 18, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, rather large head, hair dark brown, peculiar walk, turns his toes in ; dress, black jacket and vest, light brown mixture trousers, black hard hat, strong lace boots; a printer's apprentice ; may seek employment at that trade. The above reward will bo paid by Mr. Thomas Pritchard, Chetwjnd, to any person giving such in- formation as will lead to the apprehension of the thief and recovery of the bicycle. Warrant issued. SOMERSETSHIRE. 24.— Frome { County).— Portrait and description of DAVID MARCHANT, alias FISHER, DRAKE,. and DAVID, whose apprehension is sought for obtaining money by false pretences at Radstock, 25th May— Age 68, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build,, complexion fresh, hair, whiskers, moustache, and eyes grey, shaved on chin ; dress, black coat buttoned at top, white vest, plaid trousers, high silk hat. Late of No. 10, Monmouth- place, Bath. Reprepresented himself to be employed by Nelson & Son, publishers, of Bristol, and obtainoil money under the pretencc of appointing a person as their local agent. Was convicted at Warwick, in July, 1879, for forgery ; at Leeds, iu July, 1881, of fraud; at Wilts Quarter Sessions, Michaelmas, 1884, Salisbury, in April, 1885, Glou- cester Assizes in 1887, and Warwick Quarter Sessions in July, 1890, of fraud. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Williams, Frome. STAFFORDSHIRE. 25.— Burton- on- Trent { County).— For steal- ing, 15th ult., a Raleigh safety bicycle, F pattern, No. 5985 on handle- bar, " J. F. McGrah, agent, 165, Harninglow- street, Burton- on- Trent," in gold letters on frame, 30- inch wheels, |- in. solid tyres, usual parts nickel- plated, no mud- guard to front wheel, nearly new— GEORGE SMITH ( supposed false), age about 25, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., com- plexion fair, hair and slight monstache light, smart appearance; dress, light brown cloth suit, black hard hat. Carried a pair of yellow kid gloves. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Gilbride, Burton- on- Trent. £ 2 REWARD. 26.— Burslem { County).— For absconding from Warrington Industrial School, 14th ult.— JOSEPH BRIAN, age 15, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair light, eyes blue, faoe and neck very freckled; dross, white calico jacket, cord waistcoat with brass buttons, cord trousers, Scotch cap, lace boots. A native of Longton. Has friends at Manchester. May have joined the Army. Information to Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem, by whom the above reward will be paid for Brian's . apprehension. SURREY. £ 2 2s. REWARD. 27.— Reigate { Borough). — For deserting her child— ELIZABETH WALLACE, alias WILSON and PARRY, age 27, height about 5 ft. 4 in., com plexion pale, hair light, eyes groy, large prominent teeth; generally fashionably dressed in black, and long cloak with high collar ; of lady- like appearance. Is likely to be found in the Strand or in the neigh- bourhood of Victoria Railway Station. Warrant issued. The above reward will bj paid by the Reigate Board of Guardians for her apprehension. Information to Head Constable Morant, Reigate. FRIDAY, JULY 1, 1892. THE POLICE GAZETTE SUSSEX. 28.— Hastings ( Borough). — For stealing, 27th nit., a " Psycho" tricyle, 1- in. solid tyres, handle for adjusting seat in place of ordinary bolt, 40- in. driving wheels, enamelling and plating much worn— A man who gave the name of T. DOCK, age about 27, height 5 ft. 6 in., small light moustache, shows his teeth when talking; dress, black faded coat, fawn- coloured check vest, givy and black striped trousers, black hard felt hat. Information to Chief Constable Glenister, Hastings. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. DEVONSHIRE. 29.— Exeter ( County).— Committed for trial at the ensuing Devon Assizes, on three charges of burglary— JAMES KEARLY, alias LONGRAY, age 22 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion sallow, slight whiskers and moustache, eyes grey, " L " tattooed left forearm, and 0 " between thumb and forefinger right hand; dress, old rnsty black jacket, brown check vest, small pattern plaid trousers, lace boots, black hard felt hat. A tramp ; native of Liverpool. 30.— Exeter ( County).— Remanded for burglary. JAMES SMITH, age 61 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) brown, moustache light, eyes grey; dress, dark tweed suit, striped cotton shirt, yellow cotton socks, blucher boots ( much worn). A native of Liverpool. 31.— Exeter ( County).— Committed for trial at the ensuing Devon Assizes for stealing, from a dwelling house at Dawlish, on 3rd May, a gold watch and lady's dressing- case — License Holder JOHN ROBERTS, alias LAMBETH, SMITH, and SCHMIDT, Office No. 40611, age 65, height 5 ft. 9£ in., complexion fresh, hair, long moustache, and eyes grey, oval face, small mole front of neck, cup- ping marks back of neck, scar bridge of nose and right knee, mole and scar above right hip, mole right of ribs and back, double- ruptured ; dress, blue cloth overcoat, slate- colour summer suit, black bowler hat or white helmet, white canvas shoes ; carried an umbrella. A native of Strasburg. G L 326. Same as described in Case No. 10, 15th January last, and No. 7, 13th May. None of the property therein described has been recovered. He is strongly suspected of having stolen, at Ilfracombe, on 28th August, 1891, the following articles:— A black leather jewel case, lined with violet velvet; a jet brooch ; a locket and bracelet of yellow Roman beads ; a gold locket and chain; a silver watch and gold chain; a silver locket and chain ; 3 gold rings ( 2 wedding, 1 cameo) ; 2 silver brooches ( 1 round, the other bird's claw) ; a gold dagger with sheath and small chain at end ; a lava brooch; a black leather jewel case, cantaining a gold ring with opal in centre and diamond at each side; a gold Italian chased ring with " S. P. E. S." thereon; a gold ring, set turquoise and pearls; a gold ring, set with flowers of pearls and turquoise ; a gold ring, rather eld, turquoise discoloured ; a gold brooch, set with small pearls in shape of abroad arrow ; a Paris diamond brooch, size of a penny, silver setting; a Paris diamond comb; and a lady's silver geneva watch, glass chipped. Also, on 24th May, at Ilfracombe— A lady's gold watch, gold face; long gold chain, curb pattern ; and a pair of gold- framed eyeglasses. Had in his possession a gold double- case keyless watch, No. 9407 or 9107 ( the second figure obli- terated), maker " Shepheard and Reed, 104, Regent- street, London, W.," white dial, gold hands; a gold pencil case and compass; an 18- carat gold ring, set sapphire and 2 diamonds ; and a gold horseshoe pin, set with pearls. Information to the Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter.
