All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOH OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD. LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted m one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is Offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and tue exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15.?. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of anofpcer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed bu an officer of not less rank - than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and an alphabetically arranged by counties. ^ 9. The force ichich causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property tobe inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their avprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whi*. n mai/ re^ u-' t from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be Jorxarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual f orm, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Causing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for ME POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It ia particularly requested that any com- plaints aB to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be once notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- ations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( o) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1. — E Division.— For stealing jewellery and money from his lodgings — DAVID FRASER LOGAN, age 39, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, mole on right cheek, four dots between thumb and forefinger of left hand ; dress, dark check jacket suit, black hard felt hat. 2— c Division.— For stealing £ 250 and £ 5 notes stamped " Junior Army and Navy Stores, Regent Street, London "— ARTHUR ANDERSON ALEXANDER, age 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., com- plexion dark and sallow, hair and eyes black; dress, black diagonal coat and vest, tweed trousers, hard felt hat. A native of Edinburgh. 3.— K Division.— For stealing, 10th inst., a bright chestnut gelding, 6 years, 14 > hands, silver mane and tail, recently docked, long thin neck, wide behind; a set of silver- plated harness, and a well- bottom gig, painted black, wheels and springs dark green, picked out black, blue cushions WOOD, age 40, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion, hair, mous- tache, and eyes dark ; dress, dark grey dustcoat, dark red check tweed suit, high silk hat, lace boots ; carried a black walking stick. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BEDFORDSHIRE. 4.— Luton ( Borough). — For obtaining £ 7, by means of a fraudulent cheque on the Hull Binking Company, 23rd ult.— JOHN ROLAND ROBERTS, alias WILLIAM ANDREWS, age 29, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, small light moustache. ( Same as described in Case No. 3, 15th ult.). Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Jaquest, Luton. BERKSHIRE. 5. — Faringdon ( County). — For larceny at Bourton, on 4th inst.— A MAN, age 30 to 34, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, hair and moustache dark, impediment in speech, walks a little lame; dress, long dark plaid overcoat, dark cloth trousers, old side- spring boots, white collar, white- spotted blue tie with two pins ( one horseshoe, the other a whip), dark cap with double peak. Stated he was going to South Wales. Information to Supt. Butcher, Faringdon. BRECONSHIRE. 6.— Crickhowell ( County). — For stealing a light plaid ccat, drab lining ( torn), usual pockets, dark brown bone buttons, vest to match, and a pair of dark cloth trousers- STEPHEN SIMPSON, alias FRED WILLIAMS, age about 32, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) light brown, light sandy moustache, short side whiskers; dressed in stolen clothes. A farm labourer; native of Calne, Wiltshire, or neighbourhood, where he stated his father was a farmer. Has been in the Army. Supposed previously convicted in Wiltshire. Warrant issued. 7.— Crickhowell ( County).— For stealing a coat ( recovered), and attempted housebreaking at Gilwern, 21st inst,— A TRAMP, age 36 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion, hair and moustache dark, whiskers about a month's growth, walks lame through supposed sore feet; supposed to speak with foreign accent, of dirty appearance; dress, dark or blue coat, old cord trousers, dark cap, lace boots ( much worn). Was seen going in the direction of Abergavenny, on 21st inst. Supposed wanted for similar offences. Information to Supt. Winterson, Crickhowell. CHESHIRE. 8.— Chester ( City).— For stealing a horse and trap ( recovered)— HENRY CLARK, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., hair and moustache dark, otherwise clean shaved ; dress, blue- black overcoat with velvet collar, brown tweed suit, black billy- cock hat; well dressed and of gentlemanly appear- ance. Left Mold for Manchester by 3 p. m. train 4th inst. Supposed to be identical with a man wanted at Nottingham and Leicester for a similar offence. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Chester. DENBIGHSHIRE. 9. — Wrexham ( County). — For failing to report- Supervisee WILLIAM ROBERTS, alias ALFRED FREDK. BARNETT, WM. ALEXAN- DER and WM. ROSE, Office No. 42792, age 61, height 5 ft. 3j in., complexion fresh, hair greyish brown, eyes brown, lost one lower front tooth, scars near end of right little finger, front of wrist, and on left forefinger, 2nd right finger injured and wasted. Sentenced at Wrexham, 17th October, 1890, to 18 months hard labour and 2 years police supervision. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable of Denbighshire, Wrexham. DERBYSHIRE. 10.— Chesterfield ( County).— For stealing, at Temple Normanton, on 7th inst., a silver lever waltham watch, No. 171880, makers " Kendal & Dent, 106, Cheapside, London," on movement— 4 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. TUESDAY, MAY 17, 1892. JOHN RAMSDEN, alias GEORGE WALLACE, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, slight light moustache, no whiskers, of military appearance; dre3S, black coat and vest, brown striped trousers, black hard felt bat, usually wears a blue and white handkerchief round his neck. A labourer; native of Robin Hood, near Leeds. Has served in the 4th Regt. of Foot, from which he was discharged for miscon- duct. Has friends residing at Tinsley and East Ardsley, near Wakefield. He booked from Mansfield to London by train on the evening of 8th inst. Will probably endeavour to obtain a situation as stoker on board ship. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hollingworth, Chesterfield. 11.— Langley Mill ( County). — For failing to surrender to her bail on 12th inst., charged with larceny— KATE BLOOR, age 23, height 4 ft. in. complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown. A native of Derby. Barrow- on- Trent. Warrant issued. Information to Nottingham. Has relatives at Ticknall, and Supt. Lumley, Langley Mill, DEVONSHIRE. 12.— Exeter ( City).— For stealing a gold watch ( recovered) — EDWIN J. SMITH ( probably fictitious), a canvasser, age about 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion very swarthy, hair, small side whiskers, and moustache black, eyes dark and very piercing, high cheek bones, muscular build, supposed large scar on right side, speaks with slight Scotch or north- country accent, smart military appearance ; dress, dark plaid jacket and trousers, vest different material, tnrn- down collar, white cotton tie, lace boots, black hard felt hat. Stated he had been in a cavalry regiment, and was invalided from India on a pension. Has in his possession a photograph case with samples belonging to Mr. Scammell, photographer. May be found canvassing for photographs, or in the company of soldiers. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Court House, Exeter. ESSEX. £ 2 REWARD. 13— Brentwood ( County).—~ For deserting his family— ARTHUR WRIGHT, age 37, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair, whiskers, moustache and eyes dark, ( may have shaved). A labourer; native of Dunton. For deserting his family— JOSEPH WRIGHT, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, moustache light, eyes dark. A baker, late of Brentwood. Is supposed to be on tramp. Warrant issued. The above reward (£ 2 in each case) will be paid by the Board of Guardians of the Billericay Union for the apprehension of the above. Information to Supt. Dobson, Brentwood. 14.— Chelmsford ( County). — For deserting his children on 17th ult., leaving them chargeable to the Chelmsford Poor Law Union — JOHN CARTER, age 38, height 5 ft. 11 in., hair dark- brown, clean shaved except moustache, blind left eye; dress, drabbet jacket, cord trousers, peak cap. He has gone on tramp, and will most probably be found at casual wards. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Somerset, Chelmsford. 15.— Southend ( County). — For obtaining a gold albert chain, 18- carat, fetter and link pattern, by false pretences— COLONEL C. A. CLIFFORD ( supposed false), age 65, height 5 ft. 8 in., rather stout build, complexion florid, rather flabby cheeks, hair and heavy moustache grey, no whiskers, peculiar cast in one eye, very plausible address, and of mili- tary appearance; dress, dark grey overcoat, light trousers, black hard felt hat. Stated he was an Inspector of Ports. He tendered in payment two cheques on Sir Charles R. McGregor, Bart., Co.' s Bank, 25, Charles- street, St. James's- squar^, London, which have been returned endorsed " No account." Cheque- book stolen. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hawtree, Southend. FLINTSHIRE. 16.— Holywell ( County).— For assault with in- tent to ravish— JOHN ROBINSON, age 26, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache sandy, eyes brown, downcast look ; dress grey tweed jacket and trousers, dark felt hat. A native of Nan- nerch, Flintshire. Warrant issued. 17.— Holywell ( County). — For stealing £ 6 Us. 3d.— THOMAS EVANS, alias CARVAEN, age about 26, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark, eyes blue, slightly bald on top of head; dress, blue cloth coat and vest, light striped trousers, dark silk necktie with blue stripe, low shoes, black felt hat. A native of Aberaman, Glamorganshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hughes, Holywell. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 18.— Swansea ( Borough). — For stealing £ 26 16s. on 9th inst.— EDWIN STUTELY, a clerk, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, moustache ( heavy) brown, large broad nose, with pimples from the effects of drink, blinks bis eyes when speaking, very splay- footed; supposed dressed in short blue overcoat, black morning coat and vest, light trousers, and black bowler hat. Prior to 1st January, 1891, he lived at 3, Tranton- road, St. James'- road, Bermondsey, London. Nine years ago he was in the Telegraph Battalion, Royal Engineers, stationed at Bristol. His father is station- master at Brookland Station, Kent. He is fond of betting, and may be found at race meetings. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Colquhoun, Swansea. ANDREWS, THOS. RYAN, and AUGUSTUS MONTROSE, Office No. 40853, age 31, height 5 ft- 2 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, slight moustache, otherwise clean shaved, 2 moles right cheek, and 1 right side of body. A cabinet- maker. Sentenced at Nottingham, 24th October, 1889, to 15 months bard labour and 2 years police supervision for larceny. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Leicester. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 24.— Nottingham ( Borough). — For larceny and failing to report— Supervisee ANN RYAN, age 60, height 5 ft. in., complexion sallow, hair dark grey, eyes grey, scars right side and centre of forehead, 4th right finger contracted. Sentenced at Leicester, 15th October, 1890, to IS months hard labour and 3 years police supervision for larceny. 19008. Information to the Chief Constable, Nottingham. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. £ 10 REWARD. 19. — Cheltenham ( County). — For stealing £ 150 in gold — BERNARD JAMES ROWNEY, age 17, height 5 ft. 8- g in., complexion sallow, sharp intelligent features ; dress, short rough black cloth coat and vest, dark brown trousers with small blue stripe. An acconntant; native of Clapham, London. His parents reside at 85, The Chase, Clapham, S. W. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Cavendish House Co., Cheltenham, to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension of Rowney and recovery of the money. Information to Supt. McRae, Cheltenham. STAFFORDSHIRE. 25.— Wednesbury ( County).— For failing to report— License Holder THOMAS HOLT, Office No. 42101, age 26, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, deeply pockmarked, mole on right cheek and under left eye, burn scars on right shoulder, right shin, each knee, 2nd and 4th right fingers, right buttock, and left side, lost end of 3rd right finger. Sentenced at Stafford, 18th October, 1887, to 5 years penal servitude for larceny. Licensed 31st October, 1891. N 432. Information to Supt. Walters, Wednesbury. SUFFOLK. 26.— Halesworth ( County).— For obstructing police on 23rd inst.— WILLIAM SMITH, a travel- ling hawker and dealer, age 50, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion dark, hair and short whiskers black, eyes dark; dress, dark cloth coat and vest, black hard felt hat.— ADOLPHUS SMITH ( son of the above), age 27, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., com- plexion dark, hair black, eyes dark; dress, dark cloth coat and vest, black hard felt hat. These men are well known in Norfolk and Suffolk, and are now supposed to be in Norfolk. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Andrews, Halesworth. HAMPSHIRE. 20. — Winchester ( City). — Escaped from custody within the precincts of the Court at Southampton, on 18th inst., concerned with two men, Case No. 33, for larceny ( shop)— RICHARD BURDEN ( supposed false), age 38, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion ruddy, hair and moustache brown, eyes hazel, small scar left side of nose, scar right forearm and left knee; dress, black cloth jacket with silk facings, black cloth vest and trousers. A native of Rotherhithe, London. Information to Head Constable Morton, Win- chester. LANCASHIRE. 21.— Kirkham ( County).— For failing to report. — Supervisee MICHAEL BURNS, Office No. 34304, age 54, height 6 ft., complexion sallow, hair dark brown ( bald), eyes grey, scars on scalp, forehead, right elbow, right wrist and inside left forefinger, se fractured, walks lame. Sentenced at Liver- pool, 7th January, 1884, to 5 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision for fraud. T Z K 50. Information to Supt. Cross, Kirkham. 22.— Old TrafFord ( County).— For embezzling £ 2 4s. 2d. on 17th inst.— GEORGE MASON, a carter, age 23, height 5 ft. 7 in., stiff build, com- plexion fresh, slight dark moustache; dressed in dark clothes. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bent, Old Trafford WESTMORELAND. 27.— Kendal ( Borough).— For failing to report — Supervisee GECTRGE BROWN, age 40, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, 3 moles on left cheek, 1 on right muscle and left side of back, left wrist has been broken, birth- mark on left muscle, bubo scar in right groin, cupping marks on left breast. Sentenced at Kendal, 3rd January, 1890, to 6 months hard labour and 3 years police supervision for larceny. Information to the Chief Constable, Kendal. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. BRECONSH I RE. 28.— Crickhowell ( County).— Remanded till 27th inst., for an attempted unnatural offence— JOHN PRICE, age 22, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion and hair dark, slight light moustache, beard about a week's growth, eyes brown; dress, dark coat and vest, dirty moleskin trousers, lace boots. Native of Coalbrookdale, Shropshire. Has lateley worked as a fireman, at Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire. Information to Supt. Winterson, Crickhowell. DERBYSHIRE. 29.— Alfreton ( County).— Committed for trial at the Derby Quarter Sessions, 29th proximo, for larceny ( person), at Clay Cross, on 7th inst.— JOHN TAYLOR, alias ARTHUR TAYLOR, JOHN FOYSON, and ANDREW or ARTHUR SPRAGGINS, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, anchor, cap badge with " 12 " in centre, and heart tattooed left fore- arm, crossed- fiags on right forearm, and other marks back of both hands; dressed as a navvy. States he is a native of Littleport, Isle of Ely. Had in his possession an Army discharge, on which it is stated that he is a native of Mildenhall, Suffolk, FRIDAY, MAY 27, 1892. Was con- victed at Cambridge Assizes in November, 1888, for burglary, and is isaid tc have been convicted three or four times in Norfolk. Information to Supt. Eyre, Alfreton. 30.— Langley Mill ( County).— Committed for trial at the Derbyshire Quarter Sessions on 29th proximo, for stealing a mare ( recovered), at Smalley, on 20th inst.— CHARLES SMITH, age 25, height 5 ft. 3f in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes light blue, abscess mark on left forearm, two inches above wrist ; dress, grey cloth coat, drab cloth vest, woollen cord trousers, hard felt hat. Native of Godalming, Surrey. Information to Supt. Lumley, Langley Mill. ESSEX. 31.— Grays ( County).— Committed for trial at Essex Assizes for burglary— JOSE PH SMITH, alias JOSEPH JOHNSON, and JOSEPH SMIUT DENNISSON ( see Case No. 11, 6tli inst.), age 43 ( looks much older), height 5 ft. in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown ( turning grey), eyes hazel, has a peculiar twitching of the eyes. States he belongs to Derby. Information to Supt. Jordan, Grays. age 18, height 5 ft. 3 jn., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, inflamed right eye over which he wears a green shade; dress, old dark coat with pockets on hips, dirty cord vest and striped trousers, light cap with flaps, old lace boots, all much worn. Native of Lambeth, Surrey; was sentenced to 6 weeks imprisonment at Bristol, on 22nd February last for stealing two coats. Both tramp the country. Information to Supt. Ovens, Weobley. HERTFORDSHIRE. 37.— Ware ( County).— In custody, for stealing a bicycle— FREDK. CLAUD EAVES, alias G. H. BROWNING, age 26, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache dark, eyes hazel, has lost left hand, and wears an artificial substitute which is covered by an old brown kid glove, and kept behind him when speaking, scar on bridge of nose, three sores on left of forehead ; dress, black morning coat, dark striped trousers with hole worn through inside of knee, light- coloured cloth cap or silk hat. Information to Capt. Wymer, Supt., Ware. HAMPSHIRE. 32. — RingWOOd ( County). — Committed for trial at the Winchester Quarter Sessions, for breaking into the Booking Office at Hinton Admiral Railway Station, and stealing j£ 6 I6s. ll^ d.— ROBERT NORRIS, age 41, height 5 ft. 2 in., com- plexion fair, hair grey, whiskers and moustache light brown, eyes blue, right leg about 2 inches shorter than the left, and wears a high heel and thick 3ole on right boot; dress dark tweed suit, coat double- breasted, black hard felt hat, black- and- white scarf round neck, wears imitation gold ring on little finger right hand. Supposed previously convicted. Information to Inspector Hadden, Ringwood. 33.— Winchester ( City).— Committed for trial - at the next Quarter Sessions for the City of Win- chester, for three cases of larceny ( shop)— RICHARD RUSSELL, alias RICHARD BURDON, age 28, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, hair and mous- tache black, eyes hazel; dress, black cloth coat, vest, and trousers, lace boots. A native of Rotherhithe, London. Sentenced to 2 months imprisonment for larceny ( shop) — GEORGE GREGORY, age 41, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair brown, whiskers and moustache dark brown, eyes blue ; dress, black cloth morning coat and vest, dark striped trousers, lace boots.
