All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOE OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15i. per portrait, and of Is. & d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. . Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not lessrankihan Superintendentand, if the name of such person berequired to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed bii the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank , than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, tcill be wholly responsible for any proceedings whicn. may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noonon Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edit ion not later than Saturday morning. They mutt be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " DrummondSf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through ilr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It ia particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in - the date nf delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. NOTICE. " Scotland Yard, London," has been regis- tered at the General Post Office as the abbreviated address for telegrams for the Assistant Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Criminal Investigation Department, whose offices are now at New Scotland Yard, London, S. W., instead of 21, Whitehall Place. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, - or. reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Pdlice, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of • the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points- fa) The amount of the reward. .( b) The conditions on which it is payable. <( c) The person by whom it will be paid, ( i) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. JOSEPH ADAMS, late of 142, Gipsy- hill, Nor- wood, coffee- house keeper and transfer agent, whose apprehension is sought for conspiring, with others in custody, to defraud insurance companies— age 56, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) brown, whiskers ( long) and mous- tache iron- grey; usually dressed in long ulster overcoat and high hat; wears a heavy gold albert chain, diamond rings and gaiters, and carries an umbrella. A native of Oxford. Is known at Hastings, Guildford, Redhill, Woking, Southend, and Oxford. Has a brother a mechanic at Oxford. Warrant issued. 2— C. I. Department.— For stealing, forging, and uttering cheques— FRANK EDWIN MASLEN, age 27 ( looks much younger), height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion and hair dark, no whiskers or moustache; dress, pilot cloth jacket, brown tweed trousers, side- spring boots, hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 3.— G Division. — Woodcut portrait and de- scription of HARRY CLARKE, landlord of " The Queen's Head " public- house, Wharf- road, City- road, a cooper by trade, whose apprehension is sought for being concerned with others in custody charged with 60 cases of housebreaking^ burglary, and receiving, age 26, height 5 ft. 8^ in., complexion fair, hair and slight moustache very light, prominent cheekbones, upper fart of month rather projecting. He has been connected with others in custody for the past twelve months in committing burglaries in the provinces and suburbs of London. lane, Kingsland, N. E., also for indiarubber stamps, and on finding a house left unattended, broke into the same. They were in the habit of driving out with a cream- colour pony and gig, also a brown pony and cart with yellow wheels, frequently accompanied by a man riding a bicycle. A large quantity of stolen property has been recovered, and can be seen at King's- cross- road Police Station between 10 a. m. and 4 p. m. 4.— K Division. — For stealing and receiving shirts described in Case No. 78, 6th inst.— C. F. HAUSIG, agent, & c., of 11, Cyril- street, Beresford- street, Walworth, age 34, height 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion fair, hair light, eyes blue; dress, dark tweed suit, black hard felt hat. A German. 5.— x Division. — For larceuy ( bailee), on 4th Nov., 18 ' 0— WILLIAM WEYMOUTH, alias WM. FIELDING, age 34 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) dark, mutton- chop whiskers, heavy dark moustache, eyes dark; long scar back of one hand, stoops slightly when walking; dresses generally in a light tweed suit, wears a gold albert with gold pistol pendant at- tached. A native of the neighbourhood of Totnes, Devon. Has been a traveller for agricultural imple- ments and manure manufacturers through Surrey and Hampshire. Supposed known at Guildford and Basingstoke. CITY OF LONDON. 6.— For larceny ( servant) — ALFRED THOMAS MARCHANT, late of 12, Crossley- street, Baru.- bury, age 18, height 5 ft. 4 in., slim build, com- APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. Warrant issued. 7.— For embezzling a large sum of money— ALFRED CHARLES BAXTER, late of The Stepney Stores, 1, Bridge- street, Mile End- road, age 29, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, may be growing a beard, inclined to be stout, generally wears his hat on back of head. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26. Old Jewry, E. C. BEDFORDSHIRE. 8. — Leighton Buzzard ( County). — For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— HERBERT POSTLE, alias SMITH, age 24 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache sandy, eyes ( rather large) brown, oval face ; dress, black cloth suit, black bard felt hat. States he is a native of Burton- on- Trent. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Shepherd, Leighton Buzzard. cast in one eye, blinks when talking; dress, grey tweed jacket and trousers, dark cardigan jacket, lace boots, grey cloth cap. CORNWALL. 14— St. Austell ( County).— For failing to re- port— Supervisee JOHN CRIPPS, alias JAMES CRIPPS, Office No. 41556, age 48, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, scar left side of neck. Has a wife and family residing in London. Sentenced at Devonport, 3rd January, 1890, to 18 months hard labour, and 2 years police supervision, for shopbreaking. llo- 12. BERKSHIRE. 9.— Wantage ( County). — For stealing from St. Mary's House, Wantage, 11th inst., a blue check linen frock, linen cap, and underclothing, all marked " St. M. H."— KEZIAH BOOTH, age 21, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes dark ; dressed in stolen clothes, ulster, jacket, and hat. Also for stealing a blue check linen frock, linen cap, and underclothing, marked " St. M. H." — MARY ANN HODSON, age 19, short, complexion sallow, bright eyes; dressed in stolen clothes, ulster, and hat. Friends reside at Brook - street, War- wick. They both left Challon Railway Station by first train, 12th inst., booking to Paddington. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Robotham, Wantage. 10.— Maidenhead ( Borough).— For obtaining, on 4th inst., £ 30 by means of a forged cheque, pur- porting to be signed by J. E. Jessop and endorsed J. Clayton.— JN. CLAYTON, age 21, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, hair light brown, mous- tache slight, eyes hazel; dress, navy- blue overcoat, velvet collar, striped grey trousers, hard felt hat. One £ 10 Bank of England note, one £ 5 note, traced to the Bank ; No. of £ 5 notes not yet traced, C/ 65- 62172, C/ 57- 64076. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Maidenhead. £ 2 2s. REWARD. 11.— Reading ( Borough).— For deserting their families, leaving them chargeable to the Reading Union— CHRISTINA JOHNSON, age 32, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., hair dark brown, fringe on forehead, complexion fair, eyes grey. Her mother resides at Henley- on- Thames. ALFRED SLAYMAKER, alias GEORGE WILLIAMS, age 39, height 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, hair and moustache sandy, otherwise clean shaven, complexion fresh, eyes blue. A labourer or navvy. May seek employment on the G. W. R. Extension Works. Warrants issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Reading Union, to any person arresting either of the above. DERBYSHIRE. 15.— Alfreton ( County).— For failing to report — License holder CHARLES NELSON, Office No. 42051, age 41, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, hair light brown, eyes grey, scar both sides of head blue spot on forehead, mole left of neck ; scar right hip and shoulderblade, scar left calf, back of left hand, and near elbow. Sentenced at Nottingham on the 6th April, 1885, to 7 years penal servitude, and 3 years police super- vision for larceny. Liberated 26th October, 1891, H L 118. Information to Supt. Eyre, Alfreton. DORSETSH RE. 16.— Wimborne ( Coimty).— For assaulting a gamekeeper, 14th inst.— GEORGE SAMMERS, age 23, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light brown, stubby beard, ears pierced, and may be wearing ear- rings, may have scars on head and face. A navvy; native of Verwood, Dorset. Warrant issued. 17.— Wim borne ( County).— For an unnatural offence with a cow, on 30th ult. — EDWARD FOOTE, age 24, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion, hair, and small moustache dark, rather slouching walk, round features. A labourer; native of Stickland, Dorset. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marsh, Wimborne. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 18.— Cheltenham ( County). — For embezzle- ment— GEORGE KING ENGLAND, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion ruddy, hair light brown, monstache sandy, rather full eyes, stout build, round- shouldered, slightly bow- legged, and lame, tender feet, looks on the ground when walking ; is very fond of skittles and liorse- racing, and may be found at race meetings. A brewer's traveller ; native of Cheltenham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McRae, Cheltenham. jacket, dark cord trousers, grey cap with two peaks. A tramping painter ; may be found in casual wards or common lodging- houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Owens, Weobley. 22.— Hereford ( City).— For embezzling £ 48 10s. — CHARLES ROBERTS, age 20, height about 5 ft. 5 or G in., thick set, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, peculiarity about right eye, which was injured when a boy, and looks a little cross- eyed, full round face ; dress, Newmarket overcoat, brown cloth coat and vest, grey striped trousers, square- toed heavy boots, brown bowler hat. A grocer's assistant; native of Peterchurch, Herefordshire. Warrant issued. 23— Hereford ( City).— For failing to report- Supervisee JOSEPH VAUGHAN, Office No. 36438, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes brown, small scar top of head, on right cheek near nose, right thigh, and left shin. Sen- tenced at Hereford County Quarter Sessions, 4th April, 1887, to 19 months hard labour, and 7 years police supervision, for fraud. 461. 24.— Hereford ( City).— For failing to report— Licensc Hjlder GEORGE EDWARD RICHARDS, alias THOMAS EDWARDS, Office No. 41879, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, small scar left temple, right knee, left shiu, inner side of left calf; vaccination marks both arms. Sentenced at Hereford County Quarter Sessions, 17th October, 1887, to 5 years penal ser- vitude and 7 years police supervision, for house breaking. Licensed 22nd September, 1891. N 422. 25— Hereford ( City).— For failing to report— Supervisee WILLIAM HINTON, alias THOMAS JONES, Office No. 41504, age 39, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, scar right eyebrow, blue mark right wrist, cut mark second right finger, blue mark left elbow, cut mark second left finger, cleft palate, weak knees. Sen- tenced at Hereford Assizes, 23rd January, 1891, to 5 calendar months hard labour, and 5 years policy, supervision, for larceny. 276. Information to Head Constable Richardson,. Hereford. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 12. — Chesham ( County). — For deserting his five children on 13th ult., leaving them chargeable to the Amereham Union— JOHN COMPTON, a . shoemaker, age about 53, height 5 ft., complexion sallow, hair ( very thin on top) dark brown; dress, shabby dark- grey suit, and black hard felt hat. Is accompanied by his wife, who is much younger, and three children. Is well known in Northampton- shire and Croydon, where he has worked. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Clarke, Chesham. CHESHIRE. 13.— Altrincham ( County).— For stealing a p'nsrle- breasted drab melton chesterfield overcoat— ROBERT DRDRY, age 23 or 24, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes dark, slight HAMPSHIRE. 19.— Bitterne ( County).— For cruelty to a horse at St. Mary Extra, on 8th ult.— JAMES SAUN DERS, a gipsv, age about 60, height 5 ft. 8 to 10 in., hair grey; dress, long dark coat and fur cap. Travels the country with an old pony and cart, collecting rags, bones, & c., and hawking crockery, accompanied by a woman, age about 40, very stout and dark. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Adams, Bitterne. HEREFORDSHIRE. 20.— Weobley ( County).— For larceny ( bailee) — EDWIN PIKE, age 30, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion and hair ( short) dark, clean shaved; dress, dark jacket and vest, light plaid trousers ( dirty), hard hat, and red and black woollen scarf. A collier; native of Merthyr Tydvil. Warrant issued. 21.— Weobley ( County).— For deserting his two children, leaving them chargeable to the Weobley Union— WILLIAM MITCHELL, age 40, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion pale, hair dark, mous- tache sandy, consumptive- looking; dress, black HERTFORDSHIRE. 26. — Bishop Stortford ( County). — For obtaining £ 5 by means of a fictitious cheque on Messrs. Molineux, Whitfield, Whitfield & Molyneux, Bankers, Lewes— H. BENTON, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, mutton- chop whiskers and close clipped moustache sandy, first joint of little finger right hand deficient, little finger left hand contracted, usually wears kid gloves to hide these defects ; dress, dark grey over- coat, light tweed jacket, dark tweed trousers, black hard felt hat. This man represented to a tradesman in the town that he was going to make a new - road at Bishop Stortford, and that he had a number of navvy barrows, some of which wanted repairing. He also ordered a number of stakes and straight o edge. Having obtained the tradesman's confidence by giving him these orders, he enquired which was the best bank as he would have to pass his cheques, through one. He then asked the tradesman if he would exchange cheques, as he ( Benton) was short of silver. The tradesman then gave him £ 5 in cash for one of his cheques, which was afterwards found to be worthless. He also takes private lodgings and leaves without paying or pays with fictitious cheques. He is very talkative and is fond of showing a couple of cards, one representing a rose, and the other a shamrock and rose, which he says he cut out. He is identical with man described in Case No. 25, 16th ulto. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Tripp, Bishop Stortford. KENT. 27 — Mailing ( County).— For housebreaking at Ightham, 12th inst., and stealing a lady's gold geneva watch, gold face, makers, " Kendal & Dent"; a gentleman's silver geneva watch, " H. D." scratched with pin on outer case ; a lady's silver albert, long twisted links with a bar through them, tassel and jubilee three- penny piece attached; and a gold engagement ring, set 3 pearls, " Ashdown & Bartlett, Maidstone," on case— a man, supposed named RICHARD DAFT, age about 20, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., very thin build, complexion fair, hair light, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2,0, 1891. Lane, West Mailing. 28.— Folkestone ( Borough). — For stealing. 7th inst., a number of watches entrusted to him to repair— DANIEL SWOFFER, alias HARRIS, alias WALKER, age about 38, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fair, hair ( cut short) and moustache light, no whiskers; dress, short dark mixture tweed coat and vest, brown striped trousers, tight fitting, lace boots, hard felt hat. A jobbing watchmaker, native of Mersham, Kent. Is accompanied by his wife, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion sallow, thin face ; dress, black jacket, dark blue serge dress, black hat with feather, and black veil. Had with them their three female children, aged 12, 9, and 4. Will probably take furnished lodgings. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Folkestone. LANCASHIRE. 29.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report- License Holder JAMES MORAN, alias JAMES HUNTER, Office No. 41411, age 40, height 5 ft. 5 in, complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes dark grey, scar left crown of head, right cheek, left side, back of neck, and right breast, wart left breast, 2 vaccin- ation marks left arm, M. and cross- swords inside left forearm, blue line back of left wrist, bracelet and pendant left wrist, dot between left thumb and finger, burn- sear left instep, bracelet, anchor, and dots right hand and wrist. Sentenced at Liverpool Assizes, 11th November, 1882, to 10 years penal servitude, for burglary. Licensed 5th June, 1891. B I 68'. Information to the Chief Supt, Detective Depart- ment, Liverpool. 30.— Manchester ( City).— For failing to report — Licence Holder THOMAS WHITTLE, Office No. 41973, age 41, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, scar right elbow, first joint left thumb, below left elbow, knee, and wrist. Sentenced at Manchester, 29th October, 1883, to 10 years penal servitude for rape. Licenced 9th October, 1891. J 993. 31. — Manchester ( City). — For failing to report — Supervisee CHARLES HOGAN, Office No. 414G9, age 34, height 5 ft. 7 in, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, H. outside left forearm, scar each eyebrow and right buttock. Sentenced at Manchester Sessions, 9th October, 1890, to 8 months imprisonment and 2 years police super- vision, for shopbreaking. 32.— Manchester ( City).— For failing to report — Supervisee SARAH ANN HOLT, Office No. 40426, age 45, height 4 ft. 11 in, complexion ruddy, hair sandy, eyes grey, pockpitted, small mole near left nostril and left jaw. Sentenced at Manchester Sessions, 24th October, 1889, to 12 months hard labour and 3 years police supervision for larceny. 2205. Supervisee JAMES SULLIVAN, Office No. 39713, age 43, height 5 ft. 7 in, complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes brown, scar each side of forehead, each eyebrow, and centre of forehead, boil- scar back of neck, scar right chin, back of right hand, each knee, 2 moles each cheek. Sentenced at Manchester Sessions, 12th December, 1889, to 6 months hard labour and 2 years police supervision for possessing counterfeit coin. Information to Deputy Chief Constable, Man- chester. MONTGOMERYSHIRE. 33— Welshpool ( County).— For obtaining a postal order for 20s. by false pretences on 21st ult.— GEORGE BAILEY, alias SAMUEL RICHARDS, late of 131, Hinley- road, Dudley, age about 55, height 5 ft. 10 in, hair, whiskers, and beard turning grey, no moustache; dress, dark mixture tweed jacket, shepherd plaid vest ( small pattern), brown or yellow broad cord trousers, strong lace boots, black hard felt hat, usually wears a check or mottled muffler. Has the appcarance of a gamekeeper, and speaks with a broad Gloucestershire accent. His modus operandi is to go from town to town and take lodgings for a few days, and advertise poultry, & c, for sale in the '' Exchange and Mart," receives a number of letters and remittances, and then decamps. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Lake, Welshpool. WESTMORELAND. 36.— Kendal ( Borough).— Forobtainingclothing from clothiers by false pretences— a man, who gave the name of EDWARD WILLIAMS, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 4 in, stout build, complexion fresh, moustache dark, otherwise clean shaved, full face, hair brown, walks rather pigeon- toed, of respectable appearance; dress, short blue overcoat, with velvet collar, dark suit, trousers turned up at bottoms showing white lining, hard felt hat, white collar, ruby tie, wore a gold ( or imitation) guard. His modus operandi is to represent himself as the son or nephew of the keeper of some public institute. He visits the shop of a clothier or other tradesman, stating he has been commissioned to buy a number of articles ( overcoats, for instance) for the members of an amateur Christy Minstrel Troupe, which, according to him, is in progress of formation. He inspects the stock, and generally induces the trades- man to let him take away some article as a sample, promising to telegraph to him on the following day. In this manner he obtained in this borough, on 11th inst., a blue cloth check overcoat, with cape, pocket on each hip, ticket pocket in sleeve; and a black cloth jacket and vest, covered buttons. Was last seen on Thursday, 12th inst., in Kendal, when he was examining a time- table, and enquiring the distance to Keswick and Carlisle; he was then carrying three parcels. It. is strongly suspected, however, that he went into the Furness district. At his lodgings he stated he was a mechanic ; and, whilst at Kendal, bought a new pair of boots, which he will be wearing. Frequents race- meetings, fairs, hirings, < fcc. Well known at racing stables, and may be found in common lodging- houses, low public- hou-. es, or may endeavour to leave the country. His modus operandi is to take rooms at first- class hotels, and, when leaving, tender a cheque in pay- ment of account, which, when passed through the bank, is returned marked " No account." Had in his possession a letter bearing the Derby postmark, November 13th, supposed from his wife, cautioning him to be careful to change his name, and to use any but that of Douglas, as the authorities were on the alert, and when replying to her, to send no name or address, but write to Mrs. Murray, 9, Mansfield- place, Pitt- street, Glasgow, who would forward the letters to her. SUFFOLK. 66.— Bury St. Edmunds ( County).— 27th ult., by burglary— A small purse containing £ 7 in gold, a small pocket flask, a gold scarf- pin with blue stone, and a gold ring with forget- me- nots thereon. Entrance was effected by placing a ladder against a bedroom window, and the lower sash forced up apparently with a jemmy or chisel. The bedroom door was fastened by a wedge and gimlet, and copper wire stretched across the paths. Several small hooks were screwed into the lower window sashes to prevent them being opened.
