Particulart concerning p ersons whose apprehension it sought will be iiuerted in one iitue of the Poliob Gazette, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. I. Particulart at to itolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4 In aU cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. B. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of Itolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. Gd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. t. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature ofanofficer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. T. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank Han Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted im the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Edittr notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by • covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond ! f Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or im Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the Police Gazette through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2 — Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in ihe form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. NOTICE. " Scotland Yard, London," has been regis- tered at the General Post Office as the abbreviated address for telegrams for the Assistant Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Criminal Investigation Department, whose offices are now at New Scotland Yard, London, S. W., instead of 21, Whitehall Place. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward biils, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crirre. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and addr ess of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender beiDg brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1— Convict Supervision Department. — For a breach of the conditions of his license— ANDREW WOOD, a criminal lunatic, age 24, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair black, eyes blue, collar- bone projects on left side, scars on forehead. Sentenced at Edinburgh, 4th June, 1888, to be detained during Her Majesty's pleasure, for attempted murder, and liberated conditionally 6th September, 1S90. Father resides at 4, Tweed- place, Galashiels, and brothers at 30, Quilter- street, Bethnal- green, London, where he may visit. Information to the Prison Commissioner for Scotland, Edinburgh ; or to the Assistant Commis- sioner, Convict Supervision Office, New Scotland Yard. 2.— A Division. — For uttering a forged and stolen cheque— ALICE BRONDIER, age about 28, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes grey, smart appearance; supposed to be wearing a grey cloak or ulster. A native of Brussels. Warrant issued. 3. — J Division. — Woodcut portrait and description of MAJOR SLUCE, wl is sought for embezzling £ 40— age 25, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair, moustache ( slight), and side- whiskers ( small) dark, rather long nose, smart appearance, of good address, and fond of music ; dress, black diagonal coat and vest, dark tweed trousers, black felt hat. A butcher; native of Clapton, Middlesex. Warrant issued. 4.— K Division. — For obtaining money and clothing by means of seamen's worthless advance notes— HENRY CLASEN, alias CLAUSEN, age 33, height 5 ft. G in., complexion fair, hair and mou- stache ( long) light, eyes blue ; dress, blue serge suit, black hard felt hat. A German. Warrant issued. 5. — P Division. — For horse - stealing — WILLIAM BONNER, alias BALCUMBE, age 50 to 60, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion, hair and whiskers ( turning grey) dark, moustache black; dress, black cloth suit, black hard felt hat. A coachsmitli. Supposed to have worked in Tun bridge. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. 6.— S Division. — For stealing, 23rd nit., a silver- plated cornet, No. 43934, maker, Beeson, Euston- road, and a silver albert chain— THOMAS* MENDEWS JONES, alias WANDSBOROUGH, and ADAMS, age 22, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes bine, appears nervous, fond of playing draughts, and attending provinc'a! rr ce meetings ; dress, black * erge jacket and vest, light tweed trousers, light brown felt hat. Native of Weston- Supsr- Mare. CITY OF LONDON. 7. — For stealing, 24th ult., 750 Danish crowns entrusted to him to change— JOHANN ANDER- SON, a Dane, age about 40, height 6 ft., complexion, hair and heavy moustache dark, eyes hazel; dress, blue serge jacket suit, soft black felt hat ( dent in top). Warrant issued. 8.— For forgery — THEODORE BOCK, a Ger- man, late of Crosby- buildings, Crosby- square, and 11, St. George's- avenue, Tufnell- park, 50, height 5 ft. 5 in., hair, whiskers, and slight mou- stache dark, thin face. Stoops and turns his toes in. Has a peculiar expression about the mouth ; dress, frock coat and high hat, old and greasy. Warrant issued. 9.— For stealing £ 200 — HERBERT PHELPS, age 20 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion and hair fair, blind left eye ; dress, tweed suit ( new), and hard felt hf t. Had with him a leather hat case. Absconded 22nd ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewrv, E. C. ANGLESEY. 10.— Holyhead ( County).— For causing erievous bodily harm— HENRY WILLIAMS, alias HARRY BARDSLY, a sailor, age about 24, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion dark, hair ( inclined to curl) black, small dark moustache, eyes supposed brown. May be found in the neighbour- hood of Knightsbridge. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Shepherd, Leighton Buzzard. BERKSHIRE. 12.— Reading ( County).— For assaulting police, 18th ult.— GEORGE MEADE, age30, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel — JOHN MEADE, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in , com- plexion sallow, hair brown, eyes dark.— CHARLES MEADE, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes grey; all are dressed in navvies' clothes. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pocock, Reading. 13. — Reading ( Borough). — For stealing £ 6 3s. 4d.— HENRY WHEELER, age 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair and moustache light, eyes blue. Was lately employed as treasurer of the Reading branch of the Salvation Army, and canvasser for the Pearl Life Assurance Association. Is supposed to be accompanied by ALICE COPAS, ago 19, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., very slight build, and of delicate appearance; dress, dark blue serge dress, trimmed with braid in front, dark blue cloth jacket, lace boots, black hat trimmed with ribbon, was wearing a red woollen wrapper round her neck. He may endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 14.— Slough ( County).— For attempted rape, at Datchet, at 5 p. m. 28th ult.— A MAN, age 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion, hair, and side- whiskers dark; dress, supposed brown jacket, brown guernsey ( torn down front), cord trousers, black- and- white plaid cap with double peak. Information to Supt. Sutton, Slough. CARNARVONSHIRE. 15.— Llandudno ( County).— For embezzlement — HUGH PIERCE, a milk salesman, age 27, height about 5 ft. 8 in., hair dark brown, moustache ( slight) dark, two corner upper front teeth protrude, drivelling when speaking. A native of Denbigh. May endeavour to go abroad. Absconded 8th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Williams, Conway. CHESHIRE. 1G.— Birkenhead ( County).— For committing an offence under the Criminal Law Amendment Act, at Ellesmere Port, on 29th March and 4th April.— CHARLES BLAKE, known as " NOBBY," age 18, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion, hair ( wavy) and eyes dark, very round- shouldered; dress, grey plaid jacket, white cord trousers, double- breasted cord vest with pearl buttons, side- spring boots, black hard felt hat. A labourer, supposed native of Bristol. Was employed as " Wheeler " on one of the steam navvies on the eastern section of the Ship Canal Works, and left there on 8th ult. Will probably be found on one of the other sections of the works. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Supt. Hindley, County Hall, Birkenhead. CORK ( NORTH). 17.— Cork ( City). — For stealing £ 27, and a cheque on Bank of Ireland for £ 7, on 21st ult.— FRANK TAYLOR, age 23, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexiou fresh, hair light brown, eyes hazel; dress, grey tweed suit. Is a private soldier and officer's servant, and is a deserter from Shropshire Regiment. A native of Salop, and has friends residing at Shortheath, near Wolverhampton. Warrant issued. Information to District Inspector Bourchier, Cork City. DEVONSHIRE. 18.— Barnstaple ( County).— For stealing, 15th nit., at Ilfracombe, 2 leather purses, containing £ 11 in gold— ANNIE MURPHY, age 25, short, complexion fair, hair very dark ( has been cut short, and now growing), eyes ( weak) dark; dress, black - and - white stripe bodice, black skirt, plain black stockingette jacket, bound with black braid, black bone buttons half way down in front, small black sailor hat, trimmed with black ribbon, thick lace boots ; wears small pearl brooch. Native of Liverpool. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hobbs, Barnstaple. 19.— Exeter ( City).— For lar3eny ( lodgings)— LUCY GILL, alias ANGEL, age 20 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair ( cut short and parted at side) dark brown, eyes hazel, heavy dark eyebrows, teeth much decayed, cut mark left forefinger; dress, plain black dress, black double- breasted jacket, small black sailor hat, black gloves, boots worn at heels, small black brooch, respectable appearance. Her modus operandi is to obtain private lodgings, by representing that she is the daughter of a well known tradesman of an adjoining town, and has either lost her purse or missed the train. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Court House, Exeter. 20.— Devonport ( Borough).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the parish of Stoke Damerel— WILLIAM HENllY MOORE, age 33, height about 5 ft. 6 in , slight build, hair, moustache, and side whiskers dark, thin face, very red and blotchy, has peculiar eyos, one being black, the other grey, large scar behind right ear, husky voice; dress, dark blue short overcoat, black diagonal coat and vest, striped trousers, black hard felt hat; carried a black mackintosh. Had with him a large yellow tin trunk, a new leather portmanteau, a sugar box, with " Tate's Cube Sugar" thereon, and a basket containing a light brown suit, a suit of 2nd Devon Volunteer uniforn, and two clarionets. Has served in the 11th Devon Regiment, and was lately employed as toll collector in the Devonport Market. Absconded 24th March. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Evans, Devonport. ESSEX. £ 2 REWARD. 21.— Chelmsford ( County). — For deserting his wife and family — THOMAS KETLEY, a labourer, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, hair and whiskers dark brown, no moustache, eyes blue, rather round- shouldered, carries his head forward when walking, bow- legged. Native of Great Leighs. ( See Case No 21, 25th July, 1890.) Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Chelmsford Guardians for the apprehension of Ketley. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Somerset, Chelmsford. 22.— Chelmsford ( County).— For neglecting to maintain his family— JAMES CARNELL, age 47, height 5 f). 3 or 4in., complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache dark ; right arm has been broken ; is addicted to drink. A labourer; native of Boreham. Last residence, Southchurch, Essex. Warrant issued. Information to Dep uty Chief Constable Somerset, Chelmsford. 23. — Saffron Walden ( County). — For embezzlement — HENRY COTTELL, age 46, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers and moustache light brown, chin shaved, eyes grey, thin face, thick lips, fingers ( supposed left hand) contracted; dress, dark clothes and hard felt hat. A coach builder. Native of Saffron Walden. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Simmonds, Saffron Walden. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 24-— Cardiff ( Borough).— For stealing a pony ( recovered) on 19th ult,— HARRY STAMP, alias " JONICHER," a horse- coper, age about 60, height 5 ft. 1 in., slight build, whiskers and moustache grey ( may have shaved), thin face and lips, nose much marked by smallpox, walks lame, the effects of a broken leg. May be found at low public- houses, and in company of low horse- dealers at fairs. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. HEREFORDSHIRE. 25.— Hereford ( City).— For stealing a canvas bag containing £ 57 10s. gold and 30 » . silver— HANNAH REARDON, age 34, height 5 ft. 6£ in., complexion dark, hair very dark brown, large dark eyes, has lost the greater part of front teeth in upper jaw ; dress, black dolman mantle, brown staff dress ( too short for her), strong boots, bonnet and fall. A native of Abersychan, near Pontypool. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Richardson, Here- ford. LANARKSHIRE. 26.— Wishaw ( County)— Woodcut portraits and description of two men, whose apprehensions are sought for housebreaking at Motherwell, 28th March and stealing £ 455 14s. 7d., consisting of £ 359 in one- pound bank notes of the National Bank of Scot- land, £ 49 in half sovereigns, £ 47 in silver, and 14s. 7d. bronze— 1st, ANDREW McDONALD, age 29, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., stout build, hair ( cut short) and moustache ( thick) brown, eyes blue, full round face; speaks with a mixed Highland and English accent; dress, black cord coat and vest, grey striped tweed trousers, lace shoes ( newly soled, patch on one of lace- holes), light brown felt hat, had a light brown mackintosh overcoat with cape. A labourer or barman ; native of Avoch, Rossshire. 2nd, DONALD McDONALD, age 27, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, hair brown, moustache reddish- brown, eyes ( sunken) grey, thin face, speaks with a mixed Highland and English accent; lost first joint of left foreSnger, cul, mark left side of head ; dress, blue melton overcoat, dark brown tweed suit, strong lace boots, brown felt hat. A tailor or cutter; native of Avoch, Rossshire. Both worked in Sheffield for some time prior to 1890; are fond of horse- racing and other sports, and spoke of starting as bookmakers. They may endeavour to go abroad, or follow race- meetings, Absconded from O ' Motherwell on the night of 3rd ult. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Gordon, Wishaw. 27.— Glasgow ( Cihj).— For embezzling £ 979.— DAVID STEPHEN, age 42, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair, beard, whiskers, and mous- tache dark, mixed with grey ( may have shaved), speaks with Glasgow accent. A native of Aberdeen. Resided with his" wife and family at Gowanbank, Shewlands, Renfrewshire. Was employel as agent in Glasgow and the West of Scotland, for Messrs. FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 1891. LANCASHIRE. 28.— Leigh ( County).— For stealing. 26th ult., a gentleman's silver chronograph watch, centre seconds, white dial, steel hands; a man's brown, blue, and grey mixture tweed jacket, brown buttons, blue striped cotton lining in sleeves, body lining dark brown; a dark brown plaid tweed vest, brown buttons, black- and- white cotton lining; a black hard felt hat marked " M. T." in ink on leather lining; a pair of men's side- spring boots, broad toes, size 8, newly soled and heeled; a white cotton muffler; and two white pocket handkerchiefs— A man, who lodged in the house and gave the name of RICHARD HODGSON, age about 22, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, moustache ( slight) dark, lost little finger of one hand ; dress, mixture tweed coat ( skirts rather long), black and brown tweed trousers and vest, lace boots ( worn low at toes), either the stolen hat or light plaid cap with peak. Was employed with Sedwick's circus as lamp- man. Stated his father keeps a chip potato, tripe, and oyster shop in or near Bradford. Information to Supt. Higginbotham, Leigh. 29— Old Trafford ( County).— For assaulting police, 12th ult.— J. GURBRIDGE, age 25, height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaved, very much tattooed both arms, very muscular, and walks very erect; dress, short grey frieze jacket, moleskin vest and trousers, cloth peak cap. Has been a soldier. Stated he had served a term in a military prison.— WILLIAM STACEY, age 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slender build, complexion fresh, hair and heavy moustache dark; dress, short grey frieze jacket, moleskin vest and trousers, cloth peak cap. They are supposed to be convicts on licence, and to have been assisted by the Prisoners' Aid Society, and employment found for them on the Manchester Ship Canal, as navvies. May probably be found on another section of the canal, or on public works. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bent, Old Trafford. SHROPSHIRE. 33.— Shrewsbury ( County). — For obtaining money by false pretences- SAMUEL WESTON, age 70 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 3 in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) brown, eyes blue, prominent nose, scars both eyebrows, right cheek- bone, and left elbow, both big toes deformed; dress, drab slop, grey cloth trousers, patched at knees, black or brown hard felt hat, strong lace boots, may be wearing a brown overcoat. A tramping labourer; native of Stanton- upon- Hine Heath, Salop. Has been convicted at Stafford, Fenton, Hanley, and Shrewsbury. May be found working at farm- houses or at auctions as a drover. Warrant issued. Informatio to Supt. Edwards, Shrewsbury. LEICESTERSHIRE. 30.— Belgrave ( County).— For obtaining money by means of forged cheques, at Aylestone Park HUGH TUDOR JONES, age 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, round face ; dress, brown overcoat, dark mixture coat and trousers, black hard felt hat, usually wears leggings. A car- penter or builder ; native of Penrhyn, Wales. Has been a sub- contractor on sewage works at Aylestone Park. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ormiston, Belgrave. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 31— Northampton ( Borough).— For stealing, 16th ult., £ 34 — CHARLES PARR, a cashier, age 25, height 5 ft. 10 in., rather stout, slight light moustache, eyes light blue, respectable appearance, wears patent leather boots. A good football player. Left Northampton on the morning of the 17th iast., booking for Dover, but no doubt changed his route for either London or Liverpool. May endeavour to leave the country or to enlist Enquiries are requested at shipping offices and recruiting depots. Warrant issued. 32— Northampton! ( Borough).— For attempt- ing to obtain property by means of a fictitious cheque— A man who gave the name of PERCIVAL GRANT, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., com- plexion and hair dark, small dark moustache of about a fortnight's growth, otherwise clean shaved, left eye bloodshot; dress, dark clothes, black billy- cock hat, sometimes wears a brown covert coat, and two ( supposed imitation) diamond rings; respectable appearance. This man calls upon refreshment and lodging- house keepers, furniture dealers, and jewel- lers, representing to those who let apartments that he is an agent and manager of the London and Provincial Apartments Agency and Guide, 4A, Fleet- street, London, and produces printed cards to this effect, Upon visiting jewellers and furniture dealers, he makes purchases, and presents a check in pay- ment, and also requests that the change ( if any) may be handed to him. WARWICKSHIRE. 38.— Leamington ( Borough). — For obtaining money by false pretences— PERCIVAL GRANT, alias EDWARD MORYILLE, age 25, height 5 ft. 3 in., thick set, complexion pale, hair light brown, moustache slight, high cheekbones, wide mouth, left eye bloodshot; dress, grey dust overcoat, brown plaid jacket and vest, blue trousers, shabby thick lace boots, brown hard felt hat, and brown kid gloves; wore a steel watch- chain and two large imitation diamond rings; carried an ebony stick with silver- plated knob. This man called at a number of places where apartments were to let, took the same for three months, stating they were for his wife and com- panion, who would follow in a few days. He then produced a cheque- book, saying he would pay in advance, and wrote a cheque for a larger amount than was required, and drew the balance. The three cheques uttered are upon the same bank, viz., L. Barker & Co., Mark- lane, London. Stated he was a private enquiry agent for the Birmingham and Scotland Yard authorities, and Slaters'.
