All announcements for insertion in the POLIOS GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THH EDITO* o » THI POLIOH GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15 » . per portrait, and of 7s. Gd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief * officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, amd art alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZBTTB, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whicA may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on IPednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be T'N advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLIOS GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form sot forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in tke date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. ( C) ( d) NOTICE. " Scotland Yard, London," has been regis tered at the General Post Office as the abbreviated address for telegrams for the Assistant Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Criminal Investigation, whose offices are now at New Scotland Yard, London, S. W., instead of 21, Whitehall Place. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of critr> e. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering n reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited," with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly . expressed in relation to the following points — ( a) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- > meat, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.- Convict Supervision Department. — For failing to report— License Holder CHARLES ARMSTRONG, alias LITTLE SOLDIER, Office No. 40527. ( See woodcut portrait and description in Case 84, Gazette 28tli Nov. last, to which special attention is called.) This man is a notorious attic and portico burglar.^ Information to the A sistant Commissioner, Con- vict Supervision Department, New Scotland Yard, S. W. 2. — B Division. — For stealing £ 10 — F. R. KING, alias RITCHIE, age 32, height 5 ft. G in., complexion, hair, and eyes dark, large circular scar left of forehead, 2 large teeth in front ( 1 broken), thick lips; dress, dark clothes and overcoat with cape, hard felt hat. Native of Glasgow. An assistant theatrical manager. 3.— E Division. — For obtaining books by false pretences— JAMES O'BRIEN, age 22, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, no hair on face, eyes grey, promiuent nose; dress, dark clothes. May seek an engagement as a step- dancer with inferior theatrical companies. Has friends at Croydon, where he may visit with his wife, age 19. Native of London. Warrant issued. 4.— K Division — For obtaining £ 20 by false pretences— J. F. JAMES, age 4- 5, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache ( turning grey) light, eyes blue ; dress, light tweed suit, and brown hard felt hat. He advertised for a manager of a clothier's shop, receiving the £ 20 as security, and subsequently absconded, taking his stock with him. Warrant issued. * * 5— P Division.— For stealing £ 14 at Norwood, 1st inst.— JOHN BOURNE, a tailor's assistant, age 17, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair brown, usually carries his hands in his trousers pockets, slovenly gait and appearance; dress, dark tweed suit, polo cap, and old boots. Has friends in America, where he may endeavour to go. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. 6.— T Division.— For stealing, 1st inst., a cash- box, containing £ 15 gold and silver— HENRY YATEMAN, alias DAVIS, a coachman, age 36, height 5 ft. 9 iu., complexion and hair fair, slight side whiskers, eyes hazel, smart appearance; dress, brown overcoat, dark morning coat under, dark stripe trousers, dark felt hat, lace boots. Has been in the Army. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 7. — Woodcut portrait and description of THOMAS GWILLYM WILLIAMS, a clerk, lata of 19, Thorpdale- road, Hornsey, whose apprehen- sion is sought for absconding from his bail, charged with embezzlement ( see Case No. 7, 21si November last), age 26, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fair, hair light, moustache saudy, eyes brown; dress, black frock coat and vest, dark stripe tweed trousers, and high hat. Warrant issued. 8.— Woodcut portrait and description of GEORGE THORPE, late of Shepperton House, Lee- road, Lee, Kent, whose apprehension is sought for larceny and embezzling large Hums of money— Age 52, ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., hair dark and smooth, parted in centre, slight straggling whiskers, full face, walks lame and stoops, slouching gait, stout build ; 2 THE POLICE GAZETTE. Me William, 26, Old Jewry, B. C. AYRSHIRE. 9.— Ayr ( Counti/).— For violent assault at Kil- winning— JAMES LEE, a furnaco labourer, age 23, height 5 ft. 5 or G in., complexion fresh, full round face, hair dark, may have small dark moustache, stout build, slouching gait, speaks with a mixed Irish and Scotch dialect; dress, grey tweed jacket and vest, grey tweed or dirty moleskin trousers, heavy lace boots, dark tweed or black silk single- peak cap. Absconded on 22nd ult., accompanied by his brother, William Lee, stating that he was going to make his way into the county of Cumberland, where he has been previously employed at ironworks. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Ayrshire, Ayr. BERKSHIRE. 10.— Reading ( Borough).— For stealing 2 guns ( recovered) — JOSEPH ' CAREY, age 31, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., thin build, complexion sallow, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes grey, long roman nose, bandy- legged; dress, dark suit, hard black felt hat. Was sentcncod at Reading, to 3 months imprisonment, 22nd October, 1888, for larceny. A waiter. May seek employment at hotels, dining- rooms, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. BRECONSHIRE. 11.— Crickhowell ( County). — For deserting his wife and family— WILLIAM GARDNER, late of Cwmda, Crickhowell, age about 48, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., hair and whiskers dark, partly bald from erysipelas, eyes grey, rather high forehead, Very noisy when in drink. Supposed working at some colliery in Rhondda Valley, Glamorganshire. Last heard of working at the Maritime Colliery, Pontypridd. Supposed under a false name. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Winterson, Crickhowell. 12.— Crickhowell ( Comity).— JOHN E. CHAP- MAN, Case No. 11, 19th ult., not to be apprehended. Warrant withdrawn. DUMFRIESSHIRE. 13.— Dumfries ( Burgh).— Woodcut - portrait and description of JOHN BLAIR, a seedsman's clerk, whose apprehension is sought for forging and utter- ing a cheque for £ 46 on the Commercial Bank, age 30, height G ft., complexion fresh, hair ( inclined to curl) and moustachc dark, eyes brown, no whiskers, long full face, walks erect, smart respectable appear- ance, good- looking ; dress, dark tweed jacket suit, and dark round felt hat; may have a drab- colour dust- coat. His father is said to reside in Rothesay. May endeavour to leave the country. A Scotchman Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Malcolm, Dumfries. Oflico No. 40194, ago 46, height 5 ft. 4 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, scar left side of left eye, boil scar outside above right knee, and scar outside right thigh. Sentenced at Worces- ter, 25th April, 1885, to 7 years penal servitude for receiving. Licensed 26th September, 1890. L 351. Information to Supt. McRae, Cheltenham. 15.— Gloucestershire ( County).— For steal- ing a Bible and a Prayer- Book, " Dear Mrs. Scobell " written on front leaf of both— A MAN, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey), dark, clean full face ; appearance of a clergyman ; dress, black overcoat, dark trousers, soft felt hat, broad bottom boots. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Chipp, Gloucester. HEREFORDSHIRE. 10s. REWARD. 16.— Ledbury ( County).— For deserting his wife and family— WILLIAM SCRIVENS, age 40, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair and whiskers dark, scar on nose and left cheek, white lock of hair top of head; dress, dark coat and vest, white cord trousers, and brown hard felt hat. A farm labourer. Native of Eldersfield, Worcestershire. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Ledbury Board of Guardians for the apprehension of Scrivens. Information to Supt. Cope, Ledbury. 17.— RoSS ( County).— For stealing a gold medal ( recovered)— JAMES EDWARDS, a labourer, age 27, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair, small side whiskers and moustache brown, eyes ( full) hazel, sharp nose; dress, dark clothes, old brown overcoat, black hard hat; the appearance of a groom. Native of Kempley, Gloucester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Smith, Ross. 18.— Weobley ( County).— For embezzling, 9th inst., £ 10 Is. 9d.— WILLIAM WEAVER, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in. complexion fresh, hair, small side whiskers, and moustache and eyes brown, walks erect, rather fond of drink; dress, dark jacket, vest, and trousers, or may be wearing cord trousers, fur cap, and strong lace boots. Supposed gone to South Wales, and may try to get employment in a coal mine. Native of Lettan, Herefordshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ovens, Weobley. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 14— Cheltenham ( County). — For failing to report— License Holder WILLIAM WHITTARD, LANARKSHIRE. 19. — Glasgow ( City). — For embezzling £ 44 18s. 5d.— JOHN BROWN, age 20, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, hair and slight moustache dark; dress when last seen, dark tweed double- breasted jacket, light check trousers, light felt hat. Takes an active interest in football, and was a playing member of the Clyde Junior Eleven Foot- ball Club. A clerk. Absconded on or about 12th ult. Warrant issued. 20.— Glasgow ( City).— For forging, between 9th September and 9th December, the name of an umbrella manufacturer, to three bills of exchange, amounting to £ 215 16s. 3d., which he discounted in a bank in this city, JOHN W. PATERSON, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, hair, whiskers, and moustache dark brown, sunken peculiar eyes, speaks with a Scotch accent; dress, when last seen, dark clothes and black felt hat. Is married and resided at Muirhead, Chryston, Lanark- shire. Absconded 15th ult., and may endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Boyd, Glasgow. 21.— Airdrie ( Burgh).— For stealing, at Chapel hall, 16th Nov., a two- wheeled dog- cart, dark brown painted body, the lower panel divided into three parts, and the upper one sparred, wheels and shafts lined with red, daik blue cushions, both seats shift with a spring from the front, and the foot- board behind is worked by a spring in the centre of it, half- moon shaped silverised handle on each side in front- JOSEPH SMITH, age about 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair, whiskers and moustache light, beard cut to a point on chin, thin features, very small eyes, rather large nose, spoke with an English accent; dress, navy blue serge jacket suit, dark blue waterproof coat, and felt hat. Also his son, age 20 or 21, height about 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., hair light, clean shaved; dress, brown jacket suit, dark blue waterproof coat, and black felt hat. These men were canvassing for a firm of photo- graphers in Glasgow, and hired the dog- cart by the week. The pony was their own. Information to Supt. Hynd, Airdrie. LANCASHIRE. 22.— Burnley ( County).— For failing to report — Supervisee ABRAHAM DONALDSON, Office No. 38395, age 28, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes hazel, scars on fore- head, 3rd and 4th right fingers and thumb, back of 3rd left finger, on left cheek- bone, and on right knee and each shin, right thumb deformed. Sen- tenced at Preston, 20th October, 1885, to 5 years penal servitude, and 5 years police supervision, for housebreaking. L 1034. Information to Supt. Barnett, Burnley. 23.— Chorley ( Counhj).— For failing to report — Supervisee ELIZABETH BURNABY, Office No. 40700, age 20, height 5 ft., complexion sallow, hair black, eyes grsy, white marks above left elbow. Sentenced at Preston, 2nd July, 1890, to 6 months hard labour and 2 years police supervision for larceny. 194/ 6. 24.— Chorley ( County).— For stealing, 2fth ult. — 1 pair acme patent skates, stamped with the Canadian mark, new sole clip on each side of each; also a pair of clog skates— a man who gave the name of JOHN ANDREW McMANN, age about 27, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion pale, hair black, short dark thick moustache, eyes brown, very dark eyebrows, several front teeth deficient in upper jaw, and several are decaying, has very large hands; dress, short dark green overcoat ( faded), with velvet collar to match, dark brown cardigan jacket, light check vest, dark grey striped trousers, lace boots, and fashionable black felt hat, wore a brown silk neckerchief with silver stripes, and brown astrachan kid gloves ; of gentlemanly appearance. He left Chorley on night of 29th ult., taking with him a fawn- and- whito rough haired collie dog, aud was last seen at Wigan, where he obtained lodgings at an hotel, by false pretences. Has frequently represented himself as being a member of the " Lights o' London Theatrical Company." Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley. 25.— Leigh ( County). — For stealing from the person with violence, 23rd ult., between Orford and Houghton, 12s. 6d. silver; a brass beer- barrel key ; a two- bladed pocket knife, buck- horn handle; and a red and white cotton handkerchief— Two IRISH- MEN, 1st, age about 30, tall and stout; 2nd, age about 25, slight build, medium height. Supposed to reside at Warrington. Information to Supt. Iligginbotham, Leigh. 26.— Old Trafford ( County).— For failing to report— Supervisee MARTIN CAVANAGH, alias CAVENEY, Offico No. 34804, age 43, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion dark, hair brown, eyes grey, scars on each eyebrow, bridge of nose, and large white scar back of neck, anchor and M. M. C. on right arm, blue mark, H. M., and blue spots on left arm, B. C. on right side. Sentenced at Salford, 22nd October, 1883, to 5 years penal servitude and 3 years police supervision, for larceny. J. 912. Supervisee ANN MURPHY, alias BURKE and MURRAY, Offico No. 40429, age 54, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion pale, hair grey, eyes blue, nose crooked. Sentenced at Salford, 21st October, 1889, to 12 months hard labour, and 3 years police super- vision, for larceny. S018. 27.— Old Trafford ( County). — For stealing, 29tli ult., 1 lady's gold watch, whito face, broken glass ; 1 lady's gold twist brooch, oval shape, with slide and buckle; 1 pair of gold earrings, with round drop in centre, very old- fashioned; 2 gold rings, 12- carat, set pearl and coral; 1 gold keeper ring, chased ; 1 gold brooch, horse- shoe pattern ; 1 gold bracelet and clasp ; 1 silver bracelet, serpent pattern, gilt with gold; 1 amber necklace, bracelet and brooch to match, oval- shaped links; 1 crown- piece ; 1 black cashmere cloak, circular pattern; 1 black fur- lined silk cloak, grey and white fur; 1 brown felt hat, sailor- shaped, trimmed with brown and red band; 1 steel brooch and earrings to match, crescent shape— A WOMAN, age about 23, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair ( curly) light brown, full features, right oye somewhat peculiar; drsss, light TUESDAY, JANUARY 13, 1891. Bent, Old Trafford. 28.— Manchester ( City).— For embezzlement — JAMES THOMAS MILLER, age 32, height 5ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown ( inclined sandy), whiskers and moustache sandy, eyes blue; dress, rough dark blue pilot overcoat, and black flat top felt hat. Warrant issued. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Smith, Town Hall, Manchester. LEICESTERSHIRE. 29.— Leicester ( Borough).— For stealing, 10th inst, from the Turkish baths, a gold English lever stop- watch, No. 400,18- carat, white face, long gold albert, 9- carat, links of various sizes, with seal appen- dage ; also a levant leather purse, fastens with button, containing about £ 3 in gold and silver— JAMES TURNER, alias THORNTON, GILBERT and WRIGHT, age 32, height 5 ft. 5£ in., complexion dark, hair brown, whiskers and moustache dark, eyes grey, double chin, 2 large pockmarks corner left eye, 3 small scars forehead; wears dark over- coat and opera hat; respectable appearance. Fre- quents baths, reading- rooms, clubs, & c. Supposed sentenced at Manchester in June, 1886, to 12 months imprisonment for stealing overcoats from the Royal Exchange. Information to Chief Constable Duns, Leicester. vest, corduroy trousers, plaid peak cap. A native of Norwich. — WILLIAM COUSINS, alias DODGER, age 20, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion swarthy, hair brown, eyes blue ; dress, brown check suit, rough black overcoat, black hard hat. Native of Costessey. Warrant, issued. Information to Inspector Chambers, County Police Station, Norwich. 34.— Norwich ( City).— For absconding from his bail, charged with breaking and entering a ware house, and stealing 4 hams; 2 rolled shoulders; gammon; 14 lbs. of butter; 1 dead hare; and 1 partridge— ALFRED SMITH, age 30, height 5 ft. • H in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, 3 scratches on right wrist. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Norwich. LINCOLNSHIRE. 30.— Boston ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) a brass cornet, silver mouth- piece, dent near bell, maker, De Lacey, London, in black case— JAMES GARDENER, alias W. J. GARDENER, age about 48, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., hair and moustache dark brown, military appearance; dress, dark cloth suit and hard hat. A house painter. Stated he had been a bandsman in the Army, and was in India 17 years. A good musician and music writer. Left Boston by train 21st Nov., supposed going to March, having the cornet in his possession. Stays at common lodging- houses or low beer- houses, and calls on bandmasters for relief or employment in giving music lessons or writing music. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Crawford, Boston. MONTGOMERYSHIRE. £ 50 REWARD. 31.— Newtown ( County).— For falsification of accounts — SAMUEL MORGAN, age 43 to 45 height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., thick- set, oomplexion sallow, hair ( inclined to curl) and moustache grey, eyes very dark, full features, turns his toes in, and stoops slightly when walking, slightly bow- legged, pleasing appearance, and good- looking; generally wears dark dust overcoat and hart felt hat. May ondeavou to leave the country. Late manager in the Mont gomeryshire Flannel Company, by whom the above reward will be paid for his apprehension and con viction. Warrant issued. 32.— Newtown ( County).— For attempted rape and inflicting grevious bodily harm— A man, sup posed named WILLIAM HAMILTON, age 25 to 30, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes haze', mole back of right side of neck, boil marks right knee and leg, blood stains on clothes and wrist bands ; dress, brown jacket, light trousers ( supposed cord), dark cap with peak, wore a strap round waist. It is supposed that ho has cut marks on hands, and that he may call on chemists or union doctors to have them dressed. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Crowden, Newtown. 4 in. complexion, hair, and eyes dark, keeps his head on one side when speaking ; dresses respectably, and generally wears a blue overcoat with velvet collar, horsey appearance. Native of Yorkshire. Concerned with Abraham Dawson, alias Kellett, who is remanded till 20th inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, City Police, Newcastle- on- Tyne. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 35.— Northampton ( Borough).— For stealing, 19th ult., a dark mixture cloth Inverness overcoat, with cape, black and red check lining, bone buttons, 2 pockets on hips, ticket and breast pockct; 2 pairs grey Shetland lamb's wool pants ; 2 woollen shirts, 1 grey ground with black stripe ( check), tho other a blue ground with black stripe ; and 1 pair of red and black woollen gloves— A man who gave the name of TAPPER, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or in., complexion pale, moustache and eyebrows dark, sharp nose, Jewish appearance; dress, dark overcoat, dark trousers, black hard hat, may be wearing the stolen overcoat. He went to a large shop and selected the above articles, directing that they should be sent to an address in a better class locality, and that he would pay on delivery. The goods were sent, and after keeping the man, who delivered them, waiting for a considerable time, Tapper came to the door and said that some of the things did not match, and would see the man again in a minute. He theu went into the house, turning out the gas, and was not seen again. His footprints were traced in the garden, having got over the wall into an adjoining street. The house proved to be an empty one, he having obtained the key from a house agent, to whom he stated he was unmarried and lived with his sister. Also gave the name of LAWSON. Warrant issued. He pretends he cannot read, and says he has just found the ring and paper on the road, that it is a gold one, and that he will part with it for 2s. 6d., as be is leaving the neighbourhood, so cannot find the person who has lost it.
