All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZBTTB, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZBIIE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning personswhose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15j. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. • 6. Every announcement, iffor the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen properly bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. 9- The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property tole inserted im the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will 7> e wholly responsible for any proceedings whicA man result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. " Scotland Yard, London," has been regis- tered at the General Post Office as the abbreviated address for telegrams for the Assistant Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Criminal Investigation, whose offices are now at New Scotland Yard, London, S. W., instead of 21, Whitehall Place. The following is a copy of the order which governs the • circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing < lelays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering - a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of • crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited,' with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( à) The amount of the reward. ( á) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. W. 2.— K Division.— For obtaining £ 20 by false pretences— J. F. JAMES, age 4- 5, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache ( turning grey) light, eyes blue; dress, light tweed suit, and blown hard felt hat. He advertised for a manager of a clothier's shop, receiving the £ 20 as security, and subsequently absconded, taking his stock with him. Warrant issued. 3.— P Division.— For stealing £ 14 at Norwood, 1st inst.— JOHN BOURNE, a tailor's assistant, age 17, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair brown, usually carries his hands in his trousers pockets, slovenly gait and appearance; dress, dark tweed suit, polo cap, and old boots. Has friends in America, where lie may endeavour to go. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 4. — Woodcut portrait and description of THOMAS GWILLYM WILLIAMS, a clerk, late of 19, Thorpdale- road, Hornsey, whose apprehen- sion is sought for absconding from his bail, charged with embezzlement ( see Case No. 7, 21si November last), age 26, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fair, haii- light, moustache sandy, eyes brown; dress, black frock coat and vest, dark stripe tweed trousers, and high hat. Warrant issued. 5.— For obtaining a quantity of goods ( various), by false pretences, from a number of wholesale houses— SAMUEL BOBBY ( presents himself as son of Mr. Bobby, draper), alias C. W. FISH, of Frederick Fish & Son, Ipswich, and Mr. CRICK, of Bury St. Edmunds, real name supposed H. E. KEMP, of Stidbury, Suffolk, age about 26, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair and slight moustache dark, wears gold eyeglasses, of gentle- manly appearance and address; dress, dark chester- field orercoat, with far collar and cuffs, dark suit, and high hat. Supposed same as described in Case No. 5, 12th September last. May be accompanied by a French woman, age about 26, complexion and hair fair, good- looking, and well dressed, who speaks very little English. Warrant issued. 6.— Woodcut portrait and description of GEORGE THORPE, late of Shepperton House, Lee- road, Lee, Kent, whose apprehension is sought for larceny and embezzling large sums of money— Age 52, ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., hair dark and smooth, parted in centre, slight straggling whiskers, fall face, walks lame and stoops, slouching gait, stout build ; dress, dark beaver overcoat with velvet collar, dark suit, and high hat, smart appearance. Absconded on 22nd nit., accompanied by his brother, William Lee, stating that he was going to make his way into the county of Cumberland, where he has been previously employed at ironworks. BEDFORDSHIRE. - 8.— Leighton Buzzard ( County).— Woodcut portrait and description of RUPERT FINN, whose apprehension is sought for embezzling £ 54— Age 22, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, no whiskers or moustache, but may wear false whiskers and moustache, well built, carries his head forward ; dress, dark rough pilot ovcrcoat, with velvet collar, dark grey coat and vest, grey ehcck trousers, and black hard felt hat. BRECONSHIRE. 9. — Crickhowell ( County). — For deserting his wife and family— WILLIAM GARDNER, late of Cwmda, Crickhowell, age about 48, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., hair and whiskers dark, partly bald from erysipelas, eyes grey, rather high forehead, very noisy when in drink. Supposed working at some colliery in Rhondda Valley, Glamorganshire. Last heard of working at the Maritime Colliery, Pontypridd. Supposed under a false name. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 12.— Gloucestershire ( County).— For steal- ing a Bible and a Prayer- Book, " Dear Mrs. Scobell " written on front leaf of both— A MAN, ago about 50, height about 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., stout bvild, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey), dark, clean full face ; appearance of a clergyman ; dress, black overcoat, dark trousers, soft felt hat, broad bottom boots. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Chipp, Gloucester. represented himself as being a member of the " Lights o' London Theatrical Company." Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley. 17.— Leigh ( County). — For stealing from the person with violence, 23rd ult., between Orford and Houghton, 12s. Gd. silver ; a brass beer- barrel key ; a two- bladed pocket knife, buck- horn handle; and a red and white cotton handkerchief— Two IRISH- MEN, 1st, age about 30, tall and stout; 2nd, age about 25, slight build, medium height. THOMAS CUN- CLIFFE. whose apprehension is sought for larceny LANARKSHIRE. 13. — Glasgow ( City). — For embezzling £ 44 ISs. 5d.— JOHN BROWN, age 20, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, hair and slight moustache . dark; dress when last seen, dark tweed double- breasted jacket, light check trousers, li^ lit felt hat. Takes an active interest in football, arid was a playing member of the Clyde Junior Eleven Foot- ball Club. A clerk. Absconded on or about 12th ult. Warrant issued. 14.— Glasgow ( City).— For forging, between 9th September and 9th December, the name of an umbrella manufacturer, to three bills of exchange, amounting to £ 215 His. 3d., which he discounted in a bank in this city, JOHN W. PATERSON, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, hair, whiskers, and moustache dark brown, sunken peculiar eyes, speaks with a Scotch accent; dress, when last seen, dark clothes and black felt hat. Is married and resided at Mfiirhead, Chryston, Lanark- shire. Absconded 15th ult., and may endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Boyd, Glasgow. 15.— Airdrie ( Burgh).— For stealing, at Chapel- hall, 16th Nov., a two- wheeled dog- cart, dark brown painted body, the lower panel divided into three parts, and the upper one sparred, wheels and shafts lined with red, dark blue cushions, both seats shift with a spring from the front, and the foot- board behind is worked by a spring in the centre of it, half- moon shaped silverised handle on each side in front- JOSEPH SMITH, age about 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair, whiskers and moustache light, beard cut to a point on chin, thin features, very small eyes, rather large nose, spoke with an English accent; dress, navy blue serge jacket suit, dark blue waterproof coat, and felt hat. Also his son, age 20 or 21, height about 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., hair light, clcan shaved; dress, brown jacket suit, dark blue waterproof coat, and black felt hat. These men were canvassing for a firm of photo- graphers in Glasgow, and hired the dog- cart by the week. The pony was their own. Information to Suf t. Hynd, Airdrie. LANCASHIRE. 16— Chorley ( County).— For stealing, 29th ult. — 1 pair acme patent skates, stamped with the Canadian mark, new sole clip on each side of each; also a pair of clog skates— a man who gave the name of JOHN ANDREW McMANN, age about 27, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion pale, hair black, short dark thick moustache, eyes brown, very dark eyebrow s, several front teeth deficient in upper jaw, and several are decaying, has very large hands; dress, short dark green overcoat ( faded), with velvet collar to match, dark brown cardigan jacket, light check vest, dark grey striped trousers, lace boots, and fashionable black felt hat, wore a brown silk neckerchief with silver stripes, and brown astrachan kid gloves ; of gentlemanly appearance. He left Chorley on night of 29th ult., taking with him a fawn- and- white rough haired collie dog, and was last seen at Wigan, where he obtained lodgings at an hotel, by false pretences. Has frequently and embezzlement, age 25, height 5 ft. 11 in., com- plexion fair, hair black; dress, blue pilot overcoat, black velvet collar, black Inverness mackintosh. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Smithy Manchester. 19.— Old Trafford ( County). — For stealing, 29th ult., 1 lady's gold watch, white face, broken glass ; 1 lady's gold twist brooch, oval shape, with slide and buckle; 1 pair of gold earrings, with round drop in centre, very old- fashioned; 2 gold rings,. 18- carat, set pearl and coral; 1 gold keeper ring, chased; 1 gold brooch, horse- shoe pattern ; 1 gold bracelet and clasp ; 1 silver bracelet, serpent pattern, gilt with gold; 1 amber necklace, bracelet and brooch to match, oval- shaped links ; 1 crown- piece : 1 black cashmere cloak, circular pattern; 1 black fur- lined silk cloak, grey and white fur; 1 brown felt hat, sailor- shaped, trimmed with brown and red band ; 1 steel brooch and earrings to match, crescent- shape— A WOMAN, age about 23, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair ( curly) light brown, full features, right eye somewhat peculiar ; dress, light cotton check dress, blue check cotton bodice, button boots, and stolen cloak and hat. LINCOLNSHIRE. 20.— Boston ( County). — For stealing ( bailee) a brass cornet, silver mouth- piece, dent near bell, maker, De Lacey, London, in black case— JAMES GARDENER, alias W. J. GARDENER, oge about 48, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., hair and moustache dark brown, military appearance; dress, dark cloth suit and hard hat. A house painter. Stated he had been a bandsman in the Army, and was in India 17 years. A good musician and music writer. Left Boston by train 21st Nov., supposed going to March, having the cornet in his possession. Stays at common lodging- houses or low beer- houses, and calls on bandmasters for relief or employment iu giving music lessons or writing music. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Crawford, Boston. It is supposed that he lias cut marks on hands, and that he may call on chemists • or nnion doctors to have them dressed. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Crowden, Newtown. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 24.— Northampton { Borough).— For stealing, 19th ult., a dark mixture cloth Inverness overcoat, - with cape, black and red check lining, bone buttons, 2 pockets on hips, ticket and breast pocket; 2 pairs grey Shetland lamb's wool pants ; 2 woollen shirts, 1 grey ground with black stripe ( check), tlia other a blue ground with black stripe ; and 1 pair of red and black woollen gloves— A man who gave the name of TAPPER, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or .8 in., complexion pale, moustache and eyebrows dark, sharp nose, Jewish appearance; dress, dark overcoat, dark trousers, black hard hat, may be wearing the stolen overcoat. He went to a large shop and selected the above articles, directing that they should be sent to an address in a better class locality, and that he would pay on delivery. The goods were sent, and after keeping the man, who delivered them, waiting for a considerable time, Tapper came to the door and said that some of the things did not match, and would see the man again in a minute. He theu went into the house, turning • out the gas, and was not seen again. His footprints were traced in the garden, having got over the wall into an adjoining street. The house proved to be an empty one, he having obtained the key from a house agent, to whom he stated he was unmarried and lived with his sister. Also gave the name of LAWSON. Warrant issued. OXFORDSHIRE. 25.— Henley- on- Thames { County). — For converting to his own nse, money which he received for the sale of harness- THOMAS WHITE, age about 38, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, bow- legged ; dress, dark clothes, wears an apron round, Iris waist. A native of Reading. He travels the, country repairing harness, and carries a canvas bag with his tools. Stays at common lodging- houses and beer- houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. SOMERSETSHIRE. 26.— Frome { County).— For stealing, 17th ult. — A lady's silver geneva half- hunter keyless watch, No. 68687, and a gentleman's silver geneva horizontal open- face watch, No. 38742, with silver chain attached ( found pawned in Frome in name of William Jones, New North- road, Hoxton) — A man, who lodged at the house one night and gave his name as ALFRED MOORE, age about 23, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., rather si ght build, com- plexion fair, intelligent features; dress, dark fawn or dust coat, turn- down collar, with long pointed ends, cloth cap with peak in front, may be wearing a pair of men's merino drawers with bottoms of legs cut off as knickers, which he is aLo suspected of stealing. Stated he had been employed at some ironworks, also that he had been educated and emigrated to America at the expense of some society in London when a boy, that he was born at Frome, but left with his parents when a child. Williams, Frome. 27.— Taunton { County). — For stealing, 20th ult., from the Military Barracks, Taunton— a silver lever watch ( found pawned in Exeter, 22nd inst.) ; and an old gold hunter watch, No. 2235, maker " Hunot," steel hands, coat- of- arms on front, and the initials R. N. G. on back, with gold chain, having oval links about a quarter inch long— A man who gave the name of MARTIN BROTHROE, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, Lair, mous- tache, and whiskers ( mutton chop) light brown, square build, gruff voice, of military appearance; dress, blue overcoat, with supposed velvet collar, red, yellow, and black striped silk muffler, and hard felt hat. States he was employed by a dealer at Clapham Junction. Information to Supt. Durham, Taunton. WESTMORELAND. 28.— Kendal { County).— For stealing ( bailee), 23rd August last, a lady's silver hunting watch, engine- turned cases, " M. A. Atkinson " engraved on back, and a gentleman's gold albert guard, long link pattern— THOMAS WILSON, age 54 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, delicate looking, hair, whiskers and moustache brown, chin shaved, eyes grey, wears spectacles when reading; dress, light grey tweed suit, black billycock hat. A travelling watch and clock cleaner. Stated he had a wife and two children residing at Penrith, and that he had a private income of 12s. per week, which he allowed his wife to maintain herself and family. Stays at common lodging- houses, and was seen at a common lodging- house at Barnard Castle about 2 months ago. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. ShielJs, Kendal. YORKSHIRE ( EAST RIDING). 29.— Hull ( Borough). — For felony — JOSEPH GREEN, alias JOEY, age about 50, heigh 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, hair and side whiskers dark brown, crooked nose, slovenly appearance ; dress, brown cloth beaver overcoat, pepper and salt mixture trousers, plaid vest and tie, black hard felt hat, all much worn. A night- soil collector. Native of Nor- folk. He sells night- soil to farmers and sometimes does a little cattle- dealing, buying and selling on commission. He is short of money, and may be working as a labourer. He is well known in Lin- colnshire and Norfolk. Warrant issued. Infor mation to Captain Gurney, Chief Constable, Hull. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. CHESHIRE. 30. — Chester ( City). — Sentenced to 6 mouths imprisonment, 2nd inst., for conspiriug to defraud, at the Chester Horse Fair, 20th Nov last WILLIAM SMEDLEY, alias BLOSS, a horse- dealer, residing at 48, Lever - street, Manchester, age 56, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., stout build, com- plexion fresh, hair light brown ; dressed as a well- to- do farmer, and wears a silk hat. Was sentenced at York Assizes, December, 1860, to 6 months im- prisonment for unlawfully wounding; at Salford Sessions, February, 1873, to 12 months, for assault; has also, at Salford, been three times summarily con- victed. Was in custody at Ormskirk, Lancashire, in September last, for conspiracy; also, at Warring- ton, in November, 1879, for feloniously receiving a horse. WILLIAM BENNETT, alias JACKSON CROSS, ALLEN, GALBY, DEVIL'S FOOT, & c., age 43, height 5 ft. 8£ in., stout build, hair and eyes dark, right foot deformed. A butcher and horse- dealer. Sentenced at Chelmsford, loth October, lo73, to 5 years penal servitude for horse- stealing; at Dublin, 6th December, 187!
