All announcement* for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTB, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOB OP TUB POLICB GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9- The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whicn may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than, noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. Tfisy must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompani i d by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or i » Stamps. 13. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. NOTICE. " Scotland Yard, London," has been regis- tered at the General Post Office as the abbreviated address for telegrams for the Assistant Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Criminal Investigation, whose offices are now at New Scotland Yard, London, S. W., instead of 21, Whitehall Place. NOTICE. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— / ]. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear ( hereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. C. on back; 1 silver and enamel brooch, miniature of a £ 10 Bank of England note; 1 silver brooch, set brilliant, bow shape ; 1 oblong silver brooch ; 1 pair small silver ear- rings, Dutch coins, value Id. each; 1 pair single- stone brilliant ear- rings ; 1 pair silver ear- rings, oblong shape— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark, broad shoulders, large head, appearance of a labourer or mechanic; dress, black jacket, dark trousers, black hard felt hat, heavy lace boots ( new) He obtained access to the dormitories of servants by personating a workman. 2.— V Division.— For fraud under Bankruptcy Act— ALICE ALDERSON, age 23, medium height, complexion, hair and eyes dark; dress, when last seen, brown ulster, led skirt, and brown felt hat. A native of Northallerton, Yorkshire. Her father resides at 2, Bell View- lawn, Cheltenham, and she has friends at Albert- road, Kirby, Sheffield. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitar Police Office, New Seot'anJ Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 3.— Woodcut portrait and description nf GEORGF THORPE, late of Slieppevton House, Lee- road, Leo, Kent, whose apprehension is sought for larceny anct embezzling large sums of money— Age 52, ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., hair dark and smooth, parted in centre, slight straggling whiskers, full face, walks lame and stoops, slouching gait, stout build dress, dark beaver overcoat with velvet collar, dark suit, and high hat, smart appearance. A cashier. Absconded 12th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. G. BEDFORDSHIRE. 4.— Leighton Buzzard ( County).— Woodcut portrait and description of RUPERT FINN, whose apprehension is sought for embezzling £ 54— Age 22, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexio i fresh, hair brown, no whiskers or moustache, but may wear false whiskers and moustache, well built, carries his head forward; dress, dark rough pilot overcoat, with velvet collar, dark grey coat and vjst, grey check trouser3, and black hard felt hat. A native of Canterbury. Has friends at Gravesend. Was employed as manager of a shoe shop. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Shepherd, Leighton Buzzard. BRECONSHIRE. 5.— Crickhowell ( County). — For deserting . lis wife and family— WILLIAM GARDNER, late of Cwmda, Crickhowell, age about 48, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., hair and whiskers dark, partly bald from erysipelas, eyes grey, rather high forehead, very noisy when in drink. Supposed working at. some colliery in Rliondda Valley, Glamorganshire. - 4 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. TUESDAY, JANUARY 6, 1891. Last heard of working at the Maritime Colliery, Pontypridd. Supposed under a false name. Warrant issued. Information to Snpt. Winterson, Crickhowell. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 6.— Gloucestershire ( County). — For steal- ing a Bible and a Prayer- Book, " Dear Mrs. Seobell " written on front leaf of both— A MAN, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., stout bxild, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey), dark, clean full face ; appearance of a clergyman ; dress, black overcoat, dark trousers, soft felt hat, broad bottom boots. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Chipp, Gloucester. KENT. £ 100 REWARD. 7.— Mailing ( County). — The above reward offered by Colonel Holland, of Ivymeath, Snodland, Kent, for the apprehension and conviction of ALEXANDER EDWARD ROLLASON, Case No. 22, 20th January, 1888, is withdrawn. LANARKSHIRE. 8. — Glasgow ( City). — For embezzling £ 44 18s. 5d.— JOHN BROWN, age 20, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, hair and slight moustache dark; dress when last seen, dark tweed double- breasted jacket, light check trousers, light felt hat. Takes an active interest in football, and was a playing member of the Clyde Junior Eleven Foot- ball Club. A clerk. Absconded on or about 12th ult. Warrant issued. 9— Glasgow ( City). — For forging, between 9th September and 9th December, the name of an umbrella manufacturer, to three bills of exchange, amounting to £ 215 16s. 3d., which he discounted in a bank in this city, JOHN W. PATERSON, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, hair, whiskera, and moustache dark brown, sunken peculiar eye3, speaks with a Scotch accent; dress, when last seen, dark clothes and black felt hat. Is married and resided at Muirhead, Chryston, Lanark- shire. Absconded 15th ult., and may endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Boyd, Glasgow. 10.— Airdrie ( Burgh).— For stealing, at Chapel- hall, 16th Nov., a two- wheeled dog- cart, dark brown painted body, the lower panel divided into three parts, and the upper one sparred, wheels and shafts lined with red, daik blue cushions, both seats shift with a spring from the front, and the foot- board behind is worked by a spring in the centre of it, half- moon shaped silverised handle on each side in front— JOSEPH SMITH, age about 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair, whiskers and moustache light, beard cut to a point on chin, thin features, very small eyes, rather large nose, spoke with an English accent; dress, navy blue serge jacket suit, dark blue waterproof coat, and felt hat. Also his son, age 20 or 21, height about 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., hair light, clean shaved; dress, brown jacket suit, dark blue waterproof coat, and black felt hat. These men were canvassing for a firm of photo- graphers in Glasgow, and hired the dog- cart by the week. The pony was their own. Information to Supt. Hynd, Airdrie. wearing spectacles ; dressed in dark plaid shawl, maroon dress, beaded slippers, who said she would hold the baby whilst the girl went on a message for her. The above reward will be paid by Mr. Wm. Norris, Platford Hotel, Stretford- road, Manchester, giving such information as shall lead to the recovery of the child and conviction of the thief. It is requested that enquiry be made at lodging- houses and tramp wards, and any information obtained communicated to Chief Constable Wood, Town Hall, Manchester. 13.— Manchester ( City).— Woodcut portrait and desciiption of BENJN. THOMAS CUN CLIFFE, whose apprehension is sought for larceny Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Chambers, County Police Station, Norwich. and embezzlement, age 25, height 5 ft. 11 in., com plexion fair, hair black ; dress, blue pilot overcoat, black velvet collar, black inverness mackintosh. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Smith, Manchester. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 17— Northampton ( Borough).— For stealing, 19th ult., a dark mixture cloth Inverness overcoat, with cape, black and red check lining, bone buttons, 2 pockets on hips, ticket and breast pocket; 2 pairs grey Shetland lamb's wool pants ; 2 woollen shirts, 1 grey ground with black stripe ( check), the other a blue ground with black stripe ; and 1 pair of red and black woollen gloves— A man who gave the name of TAPPER, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, moustache and eyebrows dark, sharp nose, Jewish appearance; dress, dark overcoat, dark trousers, black hard hat, may be wearing the stolen overcoat. He went to a large shop and selected the above articles, directing that they should be sent to an address in a better class locality, and that he would pay on delivery. The goods were sent, and after keeping the man, who delivered them, waiting for a considerable time, Tapper came to the door and said that some of the things did not match, and would see the man again in a minute. He theu went into the house, turning out the gas, and was not seen again. His footprints were traced in the garden, having got over the wall into an adjoining street. The house proved to bo an empty one, he having obtained the key from a house agent, to whom he stated he was unmarried and lived with his sister. Also gave the name of LAWSON. Warrant issued. LINCOLNSHIRE. 14.— Boston ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a brass cornet, silver mouth- piece, dent near bell, maker, De Lacey, London, in black case— JAMES GARDENER, alias W. J. GARDENER, age about 48, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., hair and moustache dark brown, military appearance; dress, dark cloth suit and hard hat. A house painter. Stated he had been a bandsman in the Army, and was in India 17 years. A good musician and music writer. Left Boston by train 21st Nov., supposed going to March, having the cornet in his possession. Stays at common lodging- houses or low beer- houses, and calls on bandmasters for relief or employment in giving music lessons or writing music. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Crawford, Boston. OXFORDSHIRE. 18.— Henley- on- Thames ( County). — For converting to his own use, money which he received for the sale of harness- THOMAS WHITE, age about 38, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, bow- legged ; dress, dark clothes, wears an apron round, his waist. A native of Reading. He travels the, country repairing harness, and carries a canvas bag with his tools. Stays at common lodging- houses and beer- liouses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Keal, Henley- on- Thames. LANCASHIRE. 11.— Leigh ( County). — For stealing from the person with violence, 23rd ult., between Orford and Houghton, 12s. 6d. silver ; a brass beer- barrel key ; a two- bladed pocket knife, buck- horn handle; and a red and white cotton handkerchief— Two IRISH- MEN, 1st, age about 30, tall and stout; 2nd, age about 25, slight build, medium height. Supposed to reside at Warrington. Information to Supt. Higginbotliam, Leigh. £ 10 REWARD. 12.— Manchester ( City).— For stealing, 19th Sept. last, from a girl age 7, in Stretford- road, Hulme, a female child, age 5 weeks, very small for age, dark hair; dressed in long white clothing, white shawl, skin discoloured over nose and left eye, malformation of left ear— A WOMAN, middle age, MONTGOMERYSHIRE. 15.— Newtown ( County).— For attempted rape and inflicting grevious bodily harm— A man, sup- posed named WILLIAM HAMILTON, age 25 to 30, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, mole back of right side of neck, boil marks right knee and leg, blood stains on clothes and wrist bands ; dress, brown jacket, light trousers ( supposed cord), dark cap with peak, wore a strap round waist. It is supposed that he has cut marks on hands, and that he may call on chemists or union doctors to have them dressed. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Crowden, Newtown. SHROPSHIRE. 19.— Whitchurch ( County).— For larceny, at Market Drayton, 12th ult.— JOHN FLYNN, alias BUCK, age 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, blind right eye; dress, blue cloth jacket, light plaid trousers, lace boots, and grey cloth cap; may be wearing a plaid suit. A rag collector and labourer; native of Newcastle- under- Lyme.— JOHN THORNLEY, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair and moustache dark brown ; dress, brown cloth jacket, dark cord trousers and vest, strong lace boots, and brown cloth cap. A rag collector and labourer; native of Market Drayton. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Edwards, Whitchurch. NORFOLK. 16.— Norwich ( County).— For night poaching at Taverham— SAMUEL SHICKLE, aZias DAWDY, age 22, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, freckled, hair light brown, eyes grey, slightly round- shouldered ; dress, grey check suit, bell- bottom trousers, black hard hat, brown cloth overcoat. A native of Costessey. — EVERSON JONATHAN LOVETT, alias SWEAT, age 22, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion, hair, slight moustache, and eyes dark, cut side of left eye; dress, check jacket and vest, corduroy trousers, plaid peak cap. A native of Norwich. — WILLIAM COUSINS, alias DODGER, age 20, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion swarthy, hair brown, eyes blue; dress, brown check suit, rough black overcoat, black hard hat. Native of Costessey. SOMERSETSHIRE. 20— Frome ( County).— For stealing, 17th ult. — A lady's silver geneva half- hunter keyless watch, No. 68687, and a gentleman's silver geneva horizontal open- face watch, No. 38742, with silver chain attached ( found pawned in Frome in name of William Jones, New North- road, Hoxton) — A man, who lodged at the house one night and gave his name as ALFRED MOORE, age about 23, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., rather si ght build, com- plexion fair, intelligent features; dress, dark fawn or dust coat, turn- down collar, with long pointed ends, cloth cap with peak in front, may be wearing a pair of men's merino drawers with bottoms of legs cut off as knickers, which he is al= o suspected of stealing. Stated he had been employed at some ironworks, also that he had been educated and emigrated to America at the expense of some society in London when a boy, that he was born at Frome, but left with his parents when a child. Information to Supt. Williams, Frome. 81.—' Taunton ( County). — For stealing, 20th ult., from the Military Barracks, Taunton— a silver lever watch ( found pawned in Exeter, 22nd inst.) ; and an old gold hunter watch, No. 2235, maker " Hunot," steel hands, coat- of- arms on fro^ t, and the TUESDAY, JANUARY G, 1891. G. on back, with gold chain, having oval links about a quarter inch long— A man who gave the name of MARTIN BROTHROE, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, hair, mous- tache, and whiskers ( mutton chop) light brown, square build, gruff voice, of military appearance; dress, blue overcoat, with supposed velvet collar, red, yellow, and black striped silk muffler, and hard felt hat. States he was employed by a dealer at Clapham Junction. Information to Supfc. Durham, Taunton. STAFFORDSHIRE. 22.— Burslem { County).— For stealing a blue cloth overcoat, and a black worsted cord jacket ( nearly new), usual pockets— THOMAS JONES, age about 20, height 5 ft. in., slender build, com- plexion fresh, hair light, sharp features, cut right wrist; dress, brown plaid jacket, railway porter's vest, corduroy trousers, two- peak cap, lace boots. Has been employed by a coal dealer in Salford. Native of Manchester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hill, Burslem. 23.— Burslem ( County). — For stealiug a woman's short brown cloth jacket, trimmed with astrachan, and a pair of woman's plain leather button boots, size 5 ( nearly new)— LIZZIE GOODY ( supposed false), age 24, height 5 ft. 4 in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( cut short) and eyes dark, stout build, full face; dress, black stockinette jacket, fawn- colour skirt, brown felt hat, trimmed with red feathers. Supposed native of Stafford. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem. 24.— Hanley ( Borough). — For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, from 8th to 15th ult., and stealing on 15th ult., a dark green melton overcoat, usual pockets, black bone buttons, light coloured lining, to fit a man 5 ft. 6 in. high ; a pair of men's side- spring boots, size 6 ; a pair of men's lace boots, size 7 ( both pairs nearly new) ; a gentle- man's umbrella, buckhorn handle, engraved silver mount with space for name, Fox's patent frame ( nearly new); 3 stand- up collars, with corners turned down, size 15 ; and 2 odd linen cuffs, size ( one stamped " J. Jousey, Red car "— STANLEY BENT, or EVERETT, age about 35, height 5 ft. in., hair ( bald on top) dark, moustache very dark, eyes dark, speaks very politely ; dress, black worsted morning coat, light plaid vest, brown and grey striped trousers ( very much worn and frayed round bottoms), lace boots ( one burst at side of toe), black hard hat; as an overcoat he wore a double- breasted black worsted frock coat, with patch of drab paint on right shoulder. Native of Warrington. He has been employed as agent in advance by several theatrical companies, and committed the above offences while pretending to be agent in advance for Grace Hawthorne's Theodora Company. He is well known to most managers of travelling companies. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Windle, Hanley. YORKSHIRE ( EAST RIDING). 25.— Hull ( Borough).— For felony — JOSEPH GREEN, alias JOEY, age about 50, heigh Z ft. 8 in., complexion dark, hair and sido whiskers dark brown, crooked nose, slovenly appearance; dress, brown cloth beaver overcoat, pepper and salt mixture trousers, plaid vest and tie, black hard felt hat, all much worn. A night- soil collector. Native of Nor- folk. He sells night- soil to farmers and sometimes does a little cattle- dealing, buying and selling on commission. He is short of money, and may be • working as a labourer. He is well known in Lin- colnshire and Norfolk. Warrant issued. Information to Captain Gurney, Chief Constable, Hull. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. BRECONSHIRE. 26.— Crickhowell ( County).— Committed for trial at next Quarter Sessions, 6 th inst., for obtain- ing a horse by false pretences— ALFRED BRAIN, age 23, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, protuberance between nostrils, small scar bridge of nose, mole left of nose. Native of Cinderford, but has not resided there for many years, and has recently been staying at or near Wednesbury. Supposed wanted for similar offences. Information to Supt. Winterson, Crickhowell. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 27.— Slough ( County).— Committed for trial at next Assizes for arson ( setting fire to a rick of hay) — JAMES BLACK, age 51, height 5 ft. ^ in, complexion pale, broad face, hair ( turning grey) light brown, eyes brown, scar left of forehead, slightly deaf; dress, black coat, dark trousers, black and white check shirt, black peak cap, lace boots, all old. Supposed previously con- victed. Information to Supt. Sutton, Slough. DORSETSHIRE. 28.— Beaminster ( County). — Remanded till 3rd inst., for stealing an overcoat and pair of gloves, at Chidcock— FRANK BENNETT, a tramp, age 21, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes blue, birthmark on forehead ; dress, old blue coat and trousers, old boots, and hard hat. A native of Portsmouth. Information to Supt. Freeman, Beaminster. ESSEX. 29.— Ongar ( County).— Committed for trial at Chelmsford Quarter Sessions, for stealing a hatchet at Ongar Railway Station, 11th ult. — DAN CALLENAN, alias DANIEL O'CONNELL, age 27, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion dark, hair black, eyes grey, very hairy body and legs; dresa light tweed jacket, drab trousers and vest, lace boots, and double - peak plaid cap. A native of Blarney, Ireland. Was convicted 14th July, 1890, at Mistley Petty Sessions for stealing a coat, and sentenced to 1 month's imprisonment; at Ipswich County Sessions, 17th October, 1890, for stealing a spade, and sentenced to 6 weeks imprisonment.
