OONAN DOYLE, Author of " Micah Clarke," & c. " THE FIRM OF GIRDLESTONE." " The Firm of Girdlestone" presents some strongly- drawn: characters, and embodies a narrative of which the interest never for a moment flags. Opening with pleasant pictures< of- the young hero's University days, it quickly branches off into a portrayal of the seamy side of commercial life, especially in shipping circles, as exhibited in the career of an old trader and his son, who, outwardly respectable up to a certain period, are really the evil spirits of the tale, their machinations comprising the despatch of rotten ships to sea and a series of attempts to secure the fortune of a young girl confided to their care. In the last named scheme lies the main feature of the work, the various steps by which it is sought to secure the heroine's money being genuinely sensational and stirring, including, as they do, an endeavour to force her to commit suicide, and an effort to murder her in cold blood. Comic relief is duly pro- vided, particularly in the person of a broken- down Irish mili- tary man, who is able to astist in the eventual exposure of the " villains," and the restoration of the heroine to her lover and friends. The two central figures of the story— tbe trader and his son— are especially well limned, and the scene in which the former meets his fate is quite tragical in its intensity. " rji HE FIRM OF GIRDLESTONE" is running weekly in THE POLICEMAN'S DUTY.
