EPPS'S GRATEFUL— COMFORTING G O C 0 A. MADE WITH BOILING MILK. THE STAMP ON THE FACE. A famous American preacher, in one of his discourses, supposes the question to be asked concerning one or another in an assembly, ' 1 Whose image and superscrip- tion are stamped on this face? " " Care marked this face," is a frequent answer. " Who marked this one ? " " Fretfulness." " And this ?" « ' Selfishness." " This 1" " Suffering stamped this." " What this?" " Self- will." " And who stamped this face ? " a rare and sweet one. " It is marked by the sweet peace of a contented spirit." Yes— the idea is true in fact— the face is the tell- tale. It bears upon it the out- ward and visible sign of the inward ruling feeling. Whatever may be the state of soul we cherish, it comes out in more or less marked expression on the countenance. Whatever may be the stamp on our face, we ourselves put it there. Thus, then, while the face itself is made after the Divine pattern, it is left to each of us to give it expression. And all unconsciously we are doing it. Words often fail to convey the inward thought; words are sometimes used to conceal thought; the expression will most surely reveal it. Of course it is easy, when on one's guard, and in pre- sence of others, to disguise the true feelings, and to assume an appearance very different from the habitual cast of countenance— but, when alone, the mask is re- moved. Can we rub out the stamp on the countenance ? It is, of course, only the stamp of evil or of distress that we would wish to efface, and can we get rid of such ? If so, we must certainly go down to the seat of the mischief. We must deal with the cause if we would get the cure. If it be selfishness, let us lose ourselves in the love of Christ, who " pleased not Himself." If it be the countenance telling of a heart full of burdens, draw near in faith to the God that " careth for you." When the careworn spirit rests on its God, the lines of care may be softened, the stamp of fretfulness may be changed into restfulness, and even brightened into cheerfulness. " Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us." " Each one resembled the children of a King." TODDY'S HIGH- CLASS TOBACCOS. ALL SMOKERS SHOULD TRY TADDY'S UNRIVALLED MYRTLE GROYE.
