REMEMBER LOT'S WIFE -( continued). Last week we spoke of this memorial stone and learnt from it: ( 1) How dreadful a thing is sin. ( 2) How God speaks to us for our good always. ( 3) What sorrow and ruin little things may bring people into. To- day we will— ( 4) " Remember Lot's wife," and learn how foolish it is to look back. Looking back could not put the fire out. It could not do her any good or anybody else. Some people are never doing anything else— crying over spilt milk. Let her be as sorry as she can, let us grieve over the folly and evil that we have done; but no good will come of merely looking back. . ( 5) " Remember Lots' wife," that we must escape to the mountain. Very likely she thought they had gone far enough now to be quite safe. They had come out- side the gates, and were upon the plain. Who ever heard of a fire hurting anyone at such a distance ? " Escape for thy life ! " How earnestly the angels spoke to them all! " Escape to the mountains lest ye be consumed." The fire that follows sin will surely find us out if we hide anywhere else than in the Mount of the Lord — Calvary our Refuge— the Cross of Jesus Christ our only hiding place. ( 6) " Remember Lot's wife," and tarry not in the plain. Between Sodom and the mount of safety there was a long stretch of level ground. They were not to tarry in this. Very many do tarry there, and many, like Lot's wife, are consumed there ; not in the city of the very wicked people, and not in the mount of refuge, but stopping in the plain of Good Desires, wanting to be saved and to find Jesus; staying there, not getting any further ; or in the plains of Good Endeavours, trying to do right and to find Jesus. Lot's wife had got as far as that, but there she stayed. You see the angel had not to go with them to show them the way. It was very plain and very easy, just like the way to Jesus ; so easy that you can escape to Him to- day.
