John Gray and Co., confectioners, Glasgow— FOR- REST SUTHERLAND, age 33, height 5 ft 9 in, complexion ruddy, hair and mousiache brown, high cheek- bones, prominent nose ; dress, generally grey tweed suit and black hard felt hat, occasionally wears a long brown ulster. A native of London. 2.— Central Office. — For fraud — WILLIAM SCHALDIN SMITH, age " 45, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., very stout, complexion dark, moustache ( slight) black ; dress, frock coat and gaiters. Was formerly Major in 3rd Battn. Hampshire Regim » fct. Is supposed to have been at Southampton about a week since. May be found in the Channel Islands. Warrant issued. 3.— G Division.— For stealing and receiving jewellery ( see case No. 45, 38th January last)— WILLIAM HOLLAND, age 45, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair, side whiskers, and moustache, sandy ; dress, dark brown overcoat, check suit, bowler hat. A bookmaker; native of Birmingham ; may be found at race meetings.— EDWARD MICKEL, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair and moustache black ( turning grey; dress, long overcoat, black clothes, hard felt hat. A native of Clerkenwell; may be found at race meetings. Warrant issued. 4.— V Division.— For stealing, 15th inst., a strawberry roan horse, 7 years, 16 hands ; a set of brass mounted harness, and a 4 wheel covered van, " Robert Hall, 47, Wyr- street, Battersea" on cover and van— GEORGE HALL, age 29, height 5 ft. 8j in., complexion fair, hair and eyes ( slightly crossed) brown, lost top joint of right forefinger ; dress, brown mixture water' proof, black diagonal coat and vest, light tweed trousers, black hard felt hat. Previously convicted at Reading for stealing horsecloths ; supposed to have been seen there 18th ult., with a pony and cart. May be found at Brighton. 5.— Y Division— Woodcut portrait and descrip- tion of HENRY HIRST, whose apprehension is sought for embezzling £ 78 14s. 6d., the moneys of the Camden Town Building Societies; age 53, height 5 ft. 4 in., broad and stout build, complexion pale, hair ( turning grey) dark, very bald, eyebrows dark, beard and whiskers turning grey, eyes hazel, high forehead, full face, aquiline nose, firm set mouth, dirty finger nails, is asthmatical, and of restless manner; dress, dark overcoat, black morning coat, grey vest, dark tweed trousers, wrapper round throat, high silk hat. Ab- sconded 20th January last. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, Great Scotland- yard, London, S. W. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE £ 1 REWARD. 6.— Fenny Stratford ( County).— For deserting his wife and family- THOMAS JAMES COMTESS, alias COUNTESS, age about 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache grey, eyes light hazel, smart and good- loouing ; dress, dark cloth coat and overcoat, brown cord trousers, lace boots, black hard felt hat. A painter; haa worked at Leicester, Wolverhampton, and other large towns. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Newport Pagnell Union for his apprehension. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 7.— Bristol ( City).— For failing to report— Super- visee GEORGE TAYLOR, alias WILLIAMS, Office No. 31679, age 23, complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, scars left eyebrow and left forefinger, eye- brows meet. Sentenced at Dorchester, October, 1885, to 12 months'hard labour and 2 years' police super- vision for larceny. 1255. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 8.— AI d e rsh Ot f County).— Yor larceny- FREDE- RICK AUGUSTUS SYLVESTER, a sailor, age about 28, height 5 ft. 10 in., hair dark, scar bridge of nose, mole right temple; dress, brown tweed suit, military boots, brown felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Brinson, Aldershot. KENT. 9.— Folkestone ( Borough).— For stealing, 21st ult., 1 blue guernsey, 1 pair of fustian trousers, 1 black cloth cap, 1 blue serge jacket, 1 silver Geneva watch, initials " W. B." scratched inside case, gold albert, curb pattern, attached- PRIVATE PAGE, Oxford Regiment, age 19j, complexion fresh, hair dark, eyes brown; dressed supposed in stolen clothe3, military shirt, socks, and boots. A native of South- ampton ; parents reside at 23, George- street, Northend, King's Lynn, Norfolk. Enlisted at Gosport 29th Sept- ember, 1885. Has sailed in the ship " Joseph," cf Whitstable, where he was known as " Toby.' Information to Supt. Taylor, Folkestone. Stated her father is manager of the Queen's Head Hotel, Derby, and that she has a cousin residing in Every- street, Ashton- under- Lyne. Information to Supt. Bent, Old Trafford. £ 10 REWARD. 11.— Manchester ( City).— For stealing£ 75, silver - THOMAS MATHEWS, age 23, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight, complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache light, thin features ; dress, dark cloth overcoat, dark shooting jacket and vest, cloth cap. Absconded 17th ult. Is supposed to have left by Manchester, Sheffield, and Lincolnshire Railway; may endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Not to be apprehended beyond the United Kingdom. The above reward will be paid by Mi. William Nolan, 11, Dawson- street, Hulme, for the apprehension and conviction of Mathews and recovery of the money, and £ 2 for his apprehension only. Hicks, Manchester. 12— Accrington [ Borough).— JOHN and ALICE RUTTER, Case No. 22, 18th ult., not to be appre- hended. 13.— Blackburn ( Borough).— For failing to report - Supervisee THOMAS BARRETT, Office No. 31878, age 47, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair red ( turning grey), eyes blue, scar centre of forehead, over each eye ( large), right cheek, and back of left hand. Sentenced at Preston 6th January, 1886, to 11 months' imprisonment and 3 years' police supervision for lar- ceny. 2674— 14.— License Holder JOSEPH POM- FRET, alias ASPIN, Office No. 31483, age 35, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, scars on head, left eyebrow, right forearm, and base of left thumb. Sentenced at Preston 18th May, 1882, to 5 years' penal servitude and 7 years' police supervision for larceny. Licensed 2nd October, 1886. 1 475. Information to the Chief Constable, Blackburn. 14.— Salford [ Borough).— For larceny ( till)— THREE MEN— 1st, age 24, height 5 ft. 10 in., com- plexion fair, clean face ( may have slight moustache) ; dress, dark melton overcoat, light tweed trousers, stand- up collar and tie, black felt hat, and gold albert. — 2nd, age about 25, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., com- plexion and moustache ( slight) dark, scar on right cheek ; dress, dark blue melton overcoat, light mix- ture tweed trousers, stand- up collar and tie, black hard felt hat; carried a thick malacca cane with heavy silver band and buckhorn handle.— 3rd, age 24 to 26, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark, long features; dress, bottle green overcoat, light mixture tweed trousers, stand- up collar and tie, light blue silk muffler, hard felt hat. One of them enters a shop stating he has dropped a ring through the grating, and asks the shopkeeper to go into the basement with him to look for it. While so engaged one of the others enters the shop and steals the contents of the till. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Salford. OXFORDSHIRE. 15.— Oxford ( City).— For attempted burglary, 26th ult.— TWO YOUNG MEN, height about 5 ft. 4 in , slight build, and wearing black felt hats. Information to Supt. Head, Oxford. SUSSEX ( EAST). £ 1 REWARD. 16.— Hastings ( Borough).— For deserting his wife and family last June- JOSEPH CAREY, age 39, height 5 ft 9 or 10 in., slight, hair and moustache brown, walks erect, tattooed " a mermaid " and " Joseph Carey, A. B., Royal Artillery," and rings on fingers ; dress, blue cloth jacket, fustian trousers and vest, billycock hat. An excavator; served in the Royal Horse Artillery. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. A. Inskipp, Clerk to the Guardians, Hastings, for his apprehension. Information to Chief Constable Glenister, Hastings. WORCESTERSHIRE. 17.— Worcester ( City).— For larceny ( bailee), horse, trap, and harness ( recovered)— JOHN BOOTH, a hawker of mats, oilcloth, & c., age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout, complexion fresh, head nearly bald, moustache dark sandy, round- shouldered, blind one eye, lost partial use of right arm ; dress, dark green dust overcoat, small brown plaid coat and vest, dark trousers with light stripe, dark brown hard felt hat. Is accompanied by his wife, age about 30, tall, com- plexion fair, hair light, walks lame ; dress, long black ribbed ulster, trimmed fur, light dress, sugar- loaf hat; and a boy, age about 7. Have with them a man called Dick," who acts as servant. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Sommers, Wor- cester. YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING ) 18.— Leeds ( Borough).— For obtaining goods by false pretences— A. MARTIN, alias W. TOWN SEND and E. STONE, age 38, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) bl- own, moustache and small side whiskers dark brown ; dress, dark over- coat, dark suit, silk hat, sometimes wears a double- peak cap, carries a black leather bag. A native of Birmingham. His wife's relations, named " Stone," reside at 4, Caistor- road, Great Yarmouth. In payment for goods he gives cheques on the Alliance Bank ( Chelsea Branch), where he opened a small account last December, but which are returned dishonoured. Is well known at Winchester, Reading, and Aylesbury. Information to Supt. Taylor, Maidenhead. CUMBERLAND. 20.— Penrith ( County).— Committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions for obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— JOHN MILLER, age 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, hair and eyes brown, moustache slight, nose broken ; dress, grey check suit, soft cap with peak and ear flaps A swill maker ; native of Carlisle. Frequents horse fairs.— JAMES MORRISON, age 25, height 5 ft. 4 in., com- plexion dark, hair and eyes dark brown, moustache slight; dress, brown coat, grey vest, moleskin trousers ( all old and dirty). A tinsmith ; native of Hunslett, near Leeds. Both supposed previously convicted. Information to Supt. Fowler, Penrith. HAMPSHIRE. 21.— Basingstoke ( Borough.).— Committed for trial at Hampshire Quarter Sessions, 5th prox., for house- breaking— ALFRED REYNOLD JONES ( supposed false), age 28, height 6 ft. 9i in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, moustache (. heavy) and mutton chop whiskers of recent growth brown, eyes blue, 7 dots tattooed back of left arm, 3 long scars left hand near thumb, scar left eyebrow and bridge of nose ; dress, long blue overcoat, raised seams, blackjbowler hat.— JAMES THOMAS ( supposed false), age 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, pint cup with ale glass and pipe, " Jim Crow," flags, cross aud 1861, tattooed left arm, heart pierced with arrow and cross right arm, ring middle finger left hand, scar on forehead; dress, dark blue overcoat, black bowler hat. Both supposed to reside in London, and to have been concerned in committing cases of housebreaking in places within easy reach of the metropolis. Had in their possession : 1 gold carbuncle ring, 1 gold horseshoe pin, 1 plated albert, open curb pattern, with gold seal set onyx, and bloodstone and gold key attached, 1 silver Geneva keyless watch, No. 250347, 1 silver Geneva watch, No. 119, long brass guard with brass cannon and scissors attached. 1 malacca cane with silver- mounted handle, Hall- marked, 2 tobacco- pouches, one crocodile, the other india- rubber worked with silk flowe rs, 2 penknives, white bone handles, 1 large red- and- black check silk muffler, and 1 old silk handkerchief, initials " J. T." in corner. Information to Head Constable Hibberd, Basing- stoke. WORCESTERSHIRE. 22.— Worcester ( County).— Sentenced to6 weeks' imprisonment, 22nd ult., for housebreaking— NATHANIEL PARKES alias JOHN WOOD, age 23, height 4 ft. lOi in, complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes dark grey, cut over left eyebrow, mole on muscle of right arm, dot back of left wrist, mole right side of neck and between shoulders; shabbily dressed. A native of Gravesend. Supposed wanted for other offences. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Checketts, Worcester. YORKSHIRE ( EAST RIDING). 23.— Beverley ( Borough). — Remanded till 7th inst. for being found on enclosed premises, supposed for an unlawful purpose— GEORGE DAWE, age 3], height 4 ft. 10 in., slight, complexion ( sunburnt) fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, boyish appearance, anchor, 4 dots left arm, ring right arm, scar on forehead; dress, black coat, blue guernsey, bla^ diagonal vest ( too large), militia trousers, cheesecutter cap. J. Hewitt" scratched in inner case ; 1 lady's silver watch, with beaded guard attached ; 1 lady's silver Geneva watch, hair spring deficient; 1 oval- shaped gold brooch, en- graved round edge and centre, glass at back, pin broken ; 1 pair of earrings to match ; 1 pair silver ear- rings, square drops, with gold bird in centre ; 1 pair long silver earrings ; 1 plain oval- shaped gold locket, small size; 1 gold mourning locket, black enamel front with cross bars, " In Memoriam " on front, plain back ; 1 small oval gold locket, front pink and white stone ; 1 old- fashioned round gold brooch, glass front, contain- ing light and dark hair; 1 gold albert guard and 1 steel guard, curb pattern. ESSEX. 25.— Chelmsford ( County).— 27th ult., by house- breaking ( false key)— A lady's small gold horizontal Geneva watch, No. 65374, gold dial, no maker's name, filigree work on back ; a small black leather reticule bag, containing a bank- book, " Sparrow and Co ," in name of " Miss Bowring," about £ 15 gold and silver; a long silk purse, and a brown leather ditto. 2G.— Chelmsford ( County).— Between 23rd and 24th ult, by burglary— 3 silver dessert- spoons ( one marked " M." or " M. S ," the others " S.") 3 silver tea- spoons marked " C. B." Information to Deputy Chief Constable Somerset, Chelmsford. HAMPSHIRE. 27.— Bournemouth ( County).— Since 20th ult.— A brown leather telescope, about 3 ft. long when closed, with one slide about 12 in. long, maker ( supposed) " Dollond, London," cap deficient. Information to Inspector Alexander, Bournemouth. 28.— Winchester ( City).— 23rd ult.— 2 watches ( 1st, silver, little hand broken, silver dial ; 2nd, German silver, double- cased, very old, glass deficient, silver curb chain, with round silver locket, containing two ladies' photos, attached). Information to Head Constable Morton, Winchester. £ 10 REWARD. 29.— Winchester ( City).— 27th ult., by house- breaking. — 1 gentleman's gold English horizontal hunting watch, enamelled dial, plain case, 1 silver Geneva watch, No. 17933, seconds hand, glas3 broken, 1 gold albert, long plain links, seal with supposed red stone and crest attached, 1 gold albert chain, links about an inch long, 1 lady's long massive gold chain, thick plain links, with small round gold locket chased, small gold pencil- case, white stone at end, small gold seal, set red stone, engraved flowers, and gold watch- key on split ring attached, 1 plated albert, curb pattern, hook / astening, 1 gentleman's old- fashioned gold mourning ring, hair outside, initials and date inside, 2 pairs of eyeglasses ( one gold frames, the other tor- toiseshell), 1 lady's gold ring, set 2 red stones and 2 pearls, 1 lady's silver ring, set 4 blue stones, 1 mourn- ing locket, containing the photo of a female, 1 gold plated brooch, with photo of a female and hair, and £ 11 17s. 6d. gold and silver. One diamond broooh, large stone in centre. M oss- lane Primitive Methodist Chapel Extension "; 1 ditto, " For laying a foundation stone for the Primi- tive Methodist New Schools, Buxton," handles broken off ; 1 silver fish knife and 1 silver fish fork, with twisted ivory handles; 1 small silver knife, 1 small silver fork, 1 smallsilver spoon, 2 silverfruitknives, pearl hafts ; 1 round gold locket, heart in centre; 1 square gold locket, engraved : 1 gold pin, with garnet stone ; 1 silver brooch, heart, crown, and dove engraved thereon; 1 gold sleeve link, 2 diamond studs, and 3 plain gold studs. No. 15. One diamond locket, daisy pattern, and strong flexible gold chain. No. 16. Old Spanish fili- gree gold chain and locket, with monogram and hair, and 2 keys. No. 18.
