The tradesman balanced up his accounts at the end of last month with these • words on his lips, " Where am I V' The sailor asked the same question as he beat down Channel in the dark and stormy December night. The traveller pulled up at the top of the hill, uttering the same words as he peered through the fog for a sign- post. And as we stand together at the beginning of the year, could we ask a wiser question than that prompted by the first question asked of man—" Where am I ?" So much depends on whether we ask it in time. A man lay asleep in his boat as it floated down the broad river Niagara. Fortunately he awoke while the roar of the awful waterfall, towards which his boat was hurrying, was still distant. Where am 11 Taking in at a glance his fearful position, as the stream was getting stronger • every moment, he steered his boat so that it should pass under a tree that overhung the river's bank, and without a moment's hesitation he seized hold of one of the branches and was safe, while the boat was swept onward to be dashed into a thou- sand pieces at the bottom of the falls. That man asked " Where am 11" just in time. There was a funeral one day in the streets of Jerusalem, and a very grand one it was, for the dead man had died leaving a lot of money; and the people, as they looked out of their windows at the long procession, said, " So that wealthy old , inan has gone !" Gone where? The rich man died and was buried, and lifting up his eyes he cried, Where am 1 1 But he asked it too late. " In hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments " At the very beginning of the year one, God asked Adam " Where art thou i and at the very beginning of each recurring year the same question comes to us. Pull up ; before we go another day farther in the new year, and as before God, answer His question. Where art thou 1 Among the forgiven or the unforgiven ? Among the lost or the saved ? Among those living for time or those living for eternity ? Among the servants of God or the slaves of the devil 1 What is the - true, honest answer ?— Where art thou 1 SPECIAL NOTICE.
