FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A case has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests, that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is un- willing to incur any expense, with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communi- cation sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for the adoption of such a course will be apparent from the fast that the POLICE GAZETTE is circulated in the Colonies, APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. Let us go to a country in the Far East where, probably, Nebuchadnezzar reigned, where Daniel prophesied, where Esther was queen. Very wise and clever men there, fond of watching the motions of the stars. One night they see a new star, very bright; what can it mean ? Who sent this star? Who told them that Judea was the place to look for the new- born King ? Shall they go all that long weary journey ! Yes ; they start at once, never stopped by fatigue or heat, never doubting God, never inquiring " What good is it ? Now they come to Jerusalem. They inquire of the people—" A King born ! why Herod is our king— a dying old man. His sons are grown up. What can you rotan 1" The wise men might well have felt the journey had been in vain, they themselves deceived. And yet, stay ! A summons come3 to them from King Herod. How good he seems ! But, again, how difficult for them to understand that the priests should be able to supply all information about a coming King, without one volunteering to join in the search for Him- that the Jews generally knew nothing, believed nothing, cared nothing. Why should they, the strangers, go on ? But they feel sure that God had spoken ; and wondering that crowds do not come too, they start again, alone ! The star appears once more, and leads them to the very hou& e where Jesus is— a very humble one— but they are not troubled with doubts even now, " and they worshipped Him." Shall they not rise in judgment against the coldness and apathy of thousands in so- called Christian England? At this Christmastide can we be like them 1 God gives us what He save them- a call, a guidance, a reward, success. Let us give Him what they gave Him- devotion. They started, they persevered, they sought Christ aJone : they followed no human device nor their own devices, and when the Christ was found they gave ( hsir best. , , , ., , , , , Shall we find what they found 1 They found less than they looked for— a poor child only ! If we find the Christ, wejshall say, " The half was not told me. " They rejoiced with exceeding great joy. THE FAMILY DOCTOR AND PEOPLE'S MEDICAL ADVISER. WEEKLY, ONE PENNY. MONTHLY, SIXPENCE.
