FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A case has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests, that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is un- willing to incur any expense, with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communi- cation sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. ARE THEY REAL ? I had to wait a few minutes in the drawing- room. It was near the close of the year, and I was struck with the apparent beauty of two plants near the window. The question came to me—" Are they real ?" They certainly were very like it at a short distance, but tliey were merely imitation; very cleverly done, but with nothing of the beauty of a living plant — no fragrance, nor growth, nor fife. Are they real ? The question may well be applied to many who call themselves Christians. We read of some who have " a force of godliness, but deny the power thereof." We read of the Church at Sardis, that it had a name to live but was dead. We read that " they are not all Israel which are of Israel." " Examine yourselves whether ye be in the faith ; prove your own selves." Are they real? Will they bear close inspection ? Do those who live with them day by day take knowledge of them that they have something of the likeness of Christ ? Can they say—" Lord, Thou knowest all things : Thou knowest that I love Thee." Are they real ? Is there true life ? is there fellowship with the Father and His Son Jesus Christ? submission to God's will? readiness to obey His commands? joy in His services 1 Are they real ? Is there growth ? is there a deepening humility ? more simple and entire reliance on the Word and Work of Christ? Are they real 1 Is there the fragrance of true holiness ? the sweet savour of meekness, gentleness, goodness ? a conduct and life that commend the Gospel and lead others to see the blessedness of true religion? Important questions ! Let us be honest with ourselves before God— are we living, growing believers— Christians in deed and in truth ? " Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the Lord.'' Just as I am, Thy love unknown ' Has broken every barrier down, Now to be Thine, yea, Thine alone, O, Lamb of God, I come !"
