FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A case has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests, that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is un- willing to incur any expense, with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communi- cation sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. Natural things are pleasant figures and types to us of spiritual things. A builder digs deep into the ground for a rock or solid basis on which he may raise a structure. He uses powerful tools ; the mattock and pickaxe are driven well into the ground, and all loose rubbish is removed. When he begins to build his tools are changed ; the line and plummet now appear; every stone is laid with care, and strong cementing powers are called for. God, the great master builder, deals thus with human souls. His work begins by striking deeply at the natural depravity of man ; by giving no quarter to moral veneering ; by removing every cloak, every human device, every excuse— all rubbish ; and when we find ourselves nowhere— so to speak— with every refuge taken from under our feet, He lays bare before us the mighty rock— Christ. " Other foundation can no man lay." Then He takes each rough stone and builds it upon the rock, carefully and gently. The hammer of His word, the power of the Spirit, cause these new stones to yield to His moulding. They are heavy, rough, and often very disagreeable; but now no pickaxe must be used. They are stones bought, paid for by the Master ; expensive stones ; they must not be broken, but patiently shaped and chiselled and polished, '' meet for the Master's use." How often they try to evade the plummet line of Christ, reasoning against it, calling it unsuitable to the age in which wr live, unpopular, liable to do more harm than good. But the great Architect carries out His purpose ; applies hammer, chisel, and cement, until each stone is fashioned according to His mind. He that built all things is God . . . whose house are we." " And the house was built of stone, made ready before it was brought thither." THE POLICE WATCH. AS SUPPLIED TO NEARLY EVERY FORCE IS THE UNITED KINGDOM.
