All Notices intended for insertion in the Hue- and- Cry are to be transmitted under cover, addressed to the Inspector- General, Royal Irish Constabulary, Dublin Castle, authenticated, by a Separate Communication. No Description can be inserted unless an Information shall have been Sworn; but it is not necessary to forward the Informations to the Inspector- General. Notices respecting all Felonies and such Misdemeanours as are of an aggravated nature will be inserted. '• i. DUBLIN, FRIDAY, JANUARY 22, 1886. ENGLISH POLICE. IMMEDIATE AND IMPORTANT. ON the 3rd instant, about 7 A. M , the body of a man ( unknown), described below, was found lying dead on the Nottingham- road, near Chaddesden ( a few yards outside Derby borough boundary), with a bullet wound in his forehead, a small five- chambered pinfire 7 m. revolver, electro- plated, was found at his feet Is 5 feet 5 inches higb, about- 40 years of age, fair complexion, grayish blue eyes, brown hair, cut close, body strong and muscular, about 11 stone, large pockmark on tip of nose, another close to end of left nostril, close shaven, short scanty reddish moustache, had a red vulcanite false pallet in mouth ( owing to defect in natural pallet), has small soft hands, and does not appear to have been used to manual work small feet ( a ring with three patent keys found on person), has the appearance of an Irishman, 8rd and 4th fingers on left hand, old injury. Dressed ir> reddish seed Scotch mixture overcoat, round short fancy cloth tattersall ( black ground with white and brown lines) bound with black braid, brown and green Scotch cheviot mixture vest and trowsers, latter with fly front, black and gray wool socks, inside vest and drawers of gray Scotch wool, latter with scarlet band, stand- up linen collar, patent neck- scarf, blue silk with yellow spots, brown hard round- topped felt hat, light lace- up boots, repaired at each toe. The above deceased was in company with a man unknown ( described below), in Derby, on Friday, the 1st instant ? slept together on tbat night, at a public- house ; were together following day ( Saturday); both called at a gunsmith's about 7 P. M. ; and de- ceased purchased a box of 50 cartridges to fit a revolver ( since) identified as the one found beside deceased. 21 of the above cartridges were found in his pocket, 4 in revolver, and 1 discharged, leaving 24 unaccounted for. A small soft parcel, about 9 inches square, rolled in newspaper, and tied with string, was in deceased's hand when he left the public- house after breakfast, on Saturday, which is unaccounted for. About 5 feet 4 inches high, 26 years of age, light complexion, very slight whiskers, slight figure, dressed in dark blue cut- off jacket, check trowsers, hard black round- topped felt hat, with flat wide brim. Has the appearance of a groom. An inquest has been held, and an open verdict returned. The circumstances of this case are so extremely suspicious that Police Officers are requested to cause immediate inquiry to be made, with the object of identifying the dead man, and tracing the man in whose company he was last seen, and communicate all information as early as possible. S."; lady's long gold thick chain, hollow links; lady's gold buckle keeper ring s- t with t wo small diamonds, enjiaved inside ' T. J. F. to K. S."; lady's very old fr^ B^ ied dead gold ring, set with one large diamond ; gold ring, set with opal in centre snl twelve swall diamonds round ; lady's gold coral and diamond riDg, set with three pale corals in centre and three diamonds at each end : lady's gold mourning ring, black stone in centre, with blue forget- me- not earved on the stone; lady's gold ruby ring, rubies in line and half covered with setting; gent's gold buckle ring, with tongue broken off; gent's gold horse shoe pin, set with six diamonds ; gent's gold signet ring, with " T. J. F." engraved upon it; gold brooch, with fringe hanging from bottom, set with large sapphire stone and two rows of pearls round, used as brooch and pendant; gold brooch, set with large white stone, forget- me- not and stalks let into top of stone; the stalks are of gold, and the forget- me- not is formed of blue stones, two of which are missing ; pair of gold solitaires, chased on front; pair of gold sleeve links, 18 carat, hall marked; large silver locket, " J. S." engraved on one side, and ivy leaves chased on the other; lady's gold diamond and ruby ring, snake pattern, engraved inside " E. Walmsley, from her brother, December 1st, 1883 "; lady's gold ruby and pearl ring, three rubies in centre and pearls on each side ; lady's crystal and ruby ring; one plain silver bangle; two silver clasp bracelets ; one very thin silver bracelet, chased ; set of gold and silver brooch and ear- rings, gold horse shoe in centre and silver whip ; silver brooch and ear- rings, ball pattern, two balls form ear- ring; silver locket and chain, initials on locket, " L. W." ; gold brooch, set with pearls and rubies ; gold chased cross, has had a pearl in centre which is missing ; one plain gold brooch ; one brooch and ear- rings, enamelled black and gold ; one large silver brooch ; plain piece in centre s lady's gold ring, set with three rubies and pearls ; one silver brooch, fan pattern ; one silver cross, chased, a small locket on top ; a light brown pocket book in which were five receipts for £ 10 each, from Mr. Buckley ; Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher's marriage certificate a child's birth certificate, and £ i in gold and ten shillings in silver; life policy of Thomas Joseph Fletcher, in the Gresham Life Insurance Company, for £ 500, payable at death or at the age of 50. By a man about 33 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches, well built, square shoulders, sallow com- plexion, dark hair, light brown moustache, dressed in dark brown overcoat, dark billycock hat, very low crown and broad brim, wears a pair of brown kid gloves, and carries a small bright leather bag. Police officers aro requested to make particular enquiries at pawnbrokers, jewellers, silversmiths, arid others for the above described property ; and should any trace of it or the thieves be obtained to communicate without delay to C^ AS. DUBLIN METROPOLITAN POLICE G Division, PARTICULARS relative to convict James Schriber, A 3fi2, convicted at Dublin City Commission, on the 2nd December, 1881, for larceny, and sentenced to 6 years penal servitude:— Hi years of age on con- viction ; single, is a watchmaker, born in Dublin where he resined before conviction, his friends reside in France ; brown hair, grav eye ® , light brown eyebrows, regular nose, medium mouth, s allow complexion, round visage medium make, 5 feet inches high, is pockpitted This man was released on Licence from Mountjoy Prison, 23rd November, 18* 5, and went to reside at 3, Denzdle- street, Dublin, which place he left without reporting same to the Police, and his present whereabouts is unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with under the Act 34 and 35 Vic., See 6, cap. 112. General Prisons Board, January 18, 188( 3. ( 31913 M.— 59& 98. PARTICULARS relative to Convict John Herbert, A 64, convicted at Newry, county Down, at the Summer Assizes, on the 3rd July, 1879, for larceny and previous conviction, and sentenced to 7 years' penal servitude:— 32 years of age, single, is a labourer, born at Monkstown, county Dublin, his friends reside at Rathmines; light brown hair, blue eyes, fair eyebrows, broad nose, " medium mouth, sandy complexion, broad visage, medium make, 5 feet 4 inches high; dot between forefinger and thumb, both hands. This man was released on licence from Mountjoy Prison, 2nd January, 1886, and went to reside in Dublin. He reported himself to the Police on same date, and said he had no settled place of residence, but when he had procured one he would inform them. He has not done so up to the present, and his whereabouts is unknown. In the event of his arrest he should be dealt with « nder the Ae+. 34 & 35 Vic., section 5, cap. 112. January 18, 1886. ( 31913 M.— 59598.) PAP. TICULARS relative to English convict Margaret Ryan, convicted set Bristol, 6th January, 1882, for felony, after previous conviction of felony, and sen- tenced to 5 years' penal servitude, and 2 years' police supervision ; 45 years of age on conviction, married, a charwoman, prison trade— tailoress, born in Ireland, resided before conviction at Bristol:— Gray hair, blue eyes, fresh complexion, round visage, propor- tionate make, 5 feet high ; scar left side of neck, mole upper part of left arm. This woman reported to the Royal Irish Con- stabulary at Waterford, the 16th November, 1885, her intention of going to Carrick- on- Suir, but she has not reported herself at the latter place, and her present whereabouts is unknown. In the event of her arrest she should be dealt with under the 5th section of the Act 34 and 35 Vic., cap. 112. General Prisons Board, December 28, 1885. ( 31390 M.— 59422.) DESCRIPTION of John James Moriarty, late a con- fidential runner in the Hibernian Bank, Dublin, who is wanted on Warrant here, for that he did, on the 29th August, 1885, unlawfully abscond and feloniously steal the sum of £ 2,391 lis. lOrf. sterling, the money and property of the said Bank:— 28 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, slight build, florid complexion, fair hair, no beard, whiskers, or moustache, blue eyes, walks erect; dressed in ( supposed) yellowish tweed suit, and low brown jerry hat. Information to Superintendent WILLIAM REDDY, Detective Department, Dublin, who holds a Warrant for his arrest. WILLIAM REDDY, Superintendent. Superintendent's Office, G Division, September 3, 1885. DESCRIPTION of Robert Farquharson, Joint Manager of the Munster Bank Dublin, and Agent fur tlie royal Exchange Assurance Company, Dublin, who disappeared from his residence about mid- day, on the 2 « th instant, and absconded from his office, leaving his accounts in an unsatisfactory state:— He is about 40 years old, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark hair, dark beard, whiskers, and moustache, slightly tinged with gr* y, dark fresh complexion, good dark sparkling eyes, prominent teeth, average build, walks with a stoop, dressed in gentlemanly style, THE POLICE GAZETTE, OK HUE- AnD- CRY, JABUABY 22, 1886. generally wears a silk hat; is a native of Scotland. He is suspected of having embezzled over £ 10,000, property of the said Bank. Information to Superintendent WILLIAM REDDY, Detective Department, Dublin, who holds a Warrant for his arrest. In the above case the Liquidators of the Munster Bank ( Limited) will pay a reward of £ 500 for the arrest of the said Robert Farquharson, on his being delivered up to the Gaol Authorities in Dublin. convict William M'Manus ( failing to report him self), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 11th December, 1885. Convict James Hearty, described in Huc- and- Cry of 8th of last month, has not been arrested. Convict Samuel Robinson ( failing to report him- self), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 5th January, 1886. DESCRIPTION of John Devlin, native of Chapel- hill, who stands charged with having, on the 80th December, 1885 and 3rd January, 1836, in the barony of Lower Belfast, parish of Templepatrick, attempted to commit a rape on Mary Ann Stewart:— Tender eyes, regular nose, fair complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet I or 2 inches high, about 22 years of age, fair hair, light moustache and side whiskors, chin shaved; wore a soft black hat, black coat, patched corduroy trowsers, and black vest; is a labourer. Antrim, January 12, 1886. ( 72501 c.— 24806.) DESCRIPTION of James Graham, native of Temple- patrick, who stands charged with having, on the 17th December, 1885, in the barony of Lower Antrim, parish of Racavan, embezzled the sum of £ 36 3s. the property of his employers, Messrs. Lester, Brothers:— Bare spot on crown of head, walks stiffly, one shoulder higher than the other, coarse voice, dark eyes, regular nose, fresh com- plexion, round face, ft- out mako, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, about 36 years of age, dark hair, no whiskers, dark moustache ; wore a dark cup, dark tweed coat, trowsers, and vest; was formerly at soa, and served in a dragoon rogiment; is a carter. Constabulary at Ballymena hold warrant for his arrest. Ballymena, Dec. 18, 1885. ( 72068 c.— 24165.) Hamilton Black ( embezzlement), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 16th October, 1885. Richard Mayes, native of Lisburn ( charged with having, on the night of the 5th September, 1885, committed a rape), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 15th September, 1885. Belfast. The woman, name unknown, supposed native of about Lisburn, who stands charged with having, on the night of 29th or morning of 30th October, 1885, ID the barony of Upper Belfast, parish of Shankhill, committed infanticide, has not been arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 6th November, 1885. Licensed convict George M'Cullagh ( not reporting change of residence), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 19th May, 1885. Thomas Cullen ( embezzlement), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 13th March, 1885. Carlow. DESCRIPTION of John Gettings, native of Dominga, near Goresbridge, county Kilkenny, who stands charged with having, on or about, the 18th December, 1885, in the barony of Idrone West, parish of Wells, stolen a sheep, the property of John White, of Fenniscourt, near Bagenalstown :— Dark brown eyes, cocked nose, dark complexion, thin face, medium make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 22 years of age, dark hair; is a labourer. DESCRIPTION of two persons, names and native places unknown, who stand charged with having, on the 8rd day of January, 1886, in the barony of Islands, parish of Drumcliffe, broken into the dwelling house of Margaret Loftus, at Market- street, Ennis, at about the hour of 3 o'clock, A. M., and by threats compelled her to give them £ 35 10j., and who also took from her shop four bottles of brandy. Money consisted of two ten pound notes, two five pound notes, five singles, and a half- sovereign. Number of notes and Bank unknown:— 1. Hooked nose, thin face, medium make, 6 feet high, about 40 years of age, dark hair; wore a two- peaked gray tweed cap, long gray frieze ceat, brown trowsers ; spoke with a rough accent. 2. Long thin nose, round face, stout make, 5 feet 7 inches high, about 30 years of age, dark hair; wore a blue cloth cap with peak, ear flaps tied on top, pea jacket, blue coat, gray trowsers ; spoke with an English accent. Patrick Quinn ( charged with having been one of a party of men, who called at the houses of several persons and demanded arms and money), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 4th December, 1885. Down. The person, name and native place then unknown, but who turns out to be William M'Kelvey ( sheep stealing), described in last Hue- and- Cry, has been arrested. Dublin. Charles Manly ( robbery), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry 3rd November, 1885. Fermanagh. James Cassidy ( assault endangering life), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 3rd October, 1884. Galway. DESCRIPTION of a person, name and native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 4th January, 1886, in the barony of Dunmore, parish of Tuam, threatened one Thomas Madden, at Drumackin, if he didinot give up his herding:— Smooth face, medium make, 6 feet 2 inches high, about 27 years of age ; wore a long waterproof coat, reaching nearly to the ground. DESCRIPTION of a gun and revolver, the property of Jeremiah Murphy, of Knockacurrane, which were stolen from his house at Knockacurrane, parish of Stradbally, and barony of Corkaguiny, on 19th De- cember, 1885, viz.:— A double- barrelled muzzle- loading fowling- piece, very much worn, brazed on top between stock and barrell, near the hammers; and value for £ 1 10s. A six- chambered revolver with buck- horn handle, nicely browned, in good order, had some name cut on the part over the chamber, but name unknown; and was value for £ 1 5s. Dingle, December 24, 1885. James Farrell ( absconded from Urlingford Union Workhouse, taking with him clothing, the property of the Guardians of said union), has not been arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 15th May, 1885. Patrick Canty ( embezzlement), not arrested; Hue- and- Cry, 11th November, 1884. Limerick. DESCRIPTION of Michael Power, and John power, natives of Kilmeedy, and William Kiely ( mother's surname Irwin), native of Dromminacreena, who stand charged with having, on the 8th January, 1886, in the barony of Upper Connello, parish of Ballingarry, seriously assaulted Catherine Fitzgibbon, and thereby placed her life in danger: 1. Blue or gray eyes, regular nose, fair com- plexion, regular face, medium make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 20 years of age, fair hair; wore a low soft hat, gray tweed coat, tweed trowsers and vest; is a cooper. 2. Blue eyes, regular nose, fair complexion, thin face, slight make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 19 years of age, fair hair; wore a low soft hat, dark tweed coat, tweed trowsers and vest; is a cooper. 3. Gray eyes, regular nose, saliow complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 18 years of age, light brown hair; wore a low soft hat, dark tweed coat, cord trowsers, and dark tweed vest; is a farmer's son Adare, January 16, 1886. ( 72560 c.— 24897.) DESCRIPTION of Daniel Butler, native of Kyle, who stands charged with having, on the 14th December, 1885, in barony of Owneybeg, parish of Tuogh, assaulted Richard Mackey, of Shanballyedmond, by striking him on the head with a blackthorn stick, and thereby placing his life in danger :— Pimples on face, dark eyes, long thin nose, pale complexion, thin face, slight active make, 5 feet 7\ inches high, about 28 years of age, dark hair, wore a dark moustache and no whiskers; wore a dark frieze coat, brown tweed trowsers, and vest; is a farmer. Warrant for his arrest in hands of the R. I. C., at Bilboa. Newpallas, Dec. 23, 1885. ( 72154 c.— 24295.) Margaret Sweeney, ( child desertioi ), not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 17th November, 1885. Henry E. Macann ( indecent assault), not at rested; Hue- and- Cry, 7th April, 1885. Longford. DESCRIPTION of Thomas Brown, native of Kilcurry, who stands charged with having, on the night of 25th December, 1885, in the barony of Shrule, parish of Taghshinny, seriously assaulted Mathew Ryan, of Kilcurry, in conjunction with James Dougherty, who has surrendered:— Good- looking, gray eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 9 inches high, about 21 years of age, brown hair; wore a dark coat, gray trowsers and vest; is a labourer. DESCRIPTION of Robert Peyton ( mother's surname Boughton), native of Westlands, who stands charged with having, on the 16th August, 1884, hi the barony of Carra, parish of Ballyhean, committed rape :— Gentlemanly appearance, sometimes wears glasses; blue eyes, aquiline nose, fair complexion, thin face, medium make, 6 feet high, about 40 years of age, fair hair; wore a dark tweed coat, trowsers, and vest, dark gray overcoat; is a gentleman. Castlebar, Jan. 19, 1886. ( 64718 o.— 24990.) DESCRIPTION of Bryan Doonan ( mother's surname Caulfield), native of Ardcul, who stands charged with having, on the 31st December, 1885, in the barony of Costello, parish of Castlemore, committed a serious assault on his brother, Michael Doonan:— Dark eyes, straight nose, pale complexion, thin face, slight make, 5 feet 6 inches high, about 24 years of age, dark hair, and small black moustache ; wore a round hard hat, dark tweed coat, trowsers, and vest; is a labourer. Ballaghadereen, Jan. 4, 1886. ( 72359 o— 94591.) DESCRIPTION of Michael Caulfield ( mother's sur- name Loftus), native of Aughtaboy, who stands charged with having, on the 17th Decemb « ^ L885, in the barony of Costello, parish of Knock, commuted a serious assault on John Egan, of Eden, by sti^ '. ng him on the head with a stone, at Aughtaboy :— Blue eyes, regular nose, fair complexion, round full face, stout make, 5 feet 4 inches high, about 20 years of THE POLICE GAZETTE, OR HUE- AND- CRY, JANUARY! 22? 1886. age, fair hair; wore a gray corduroy sack coat, gray cordlh'owsers, and a Scotch cap ; or a low round hat, frioBbat, sack made, and brown corduroy trowsers. John Bergin ( obtaining money ont alse pretences), • not arrested ; llue- and- Cry, 10th Novomber, 1885. Roscommon. James Flynn ( fraud), not arrested ;, Hue- and- Cry, 20th October, 1885. Sligo. DESCRIPTION of Margaret Burns, native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the 19th day of November, 1885, at Sligo, in the barony of Carbury, parish of St. John's, failed to appear to proseeute on information made by her as to an assault committed on ber by one Thomas Kearns at Sligo, on 22nd June, 1885. She is believed to be purposely keeping out of the way to avoid giving evidence in the case. Her husband is an itinerant musician and she probably accompanies him :— Gray eyes, regular nose, pale complexion, regular face, slight make, 4 feot 3 inches high, about 45 years of age, dark hair; wore a lindsey dress, old gray shawl, old laced boots. Tipperary. \ DESCRIPTION of Michael Brett ( mother's surname Brien), native of Mullinahone, who stands charged with having, on the 2nd day of January, 1886, in the barony of Slieveardagh, parish of Lismolin, unlawfully assaulted and robbed one Edmond Fitzpatrick, of a revolver and some money :— Down- looking, stoops his head when walking, gray eyes, regular nose, fresh complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 10 inches high, about 82 years of age, fair hair; wore a soft hat, the leaf of which he usually pulls down over his eyes, and turned up behind, old twoed frock coat, trowsers, and vest; is a farm labourer. DESCRIPTION of a man, name and native place unknown, who stands charged with having, on the IRth day of December, 1885, in the barony of Upper Ormond, parish of Lisbunny, stolen six head of cattle, the property of Michael Brien, of Curraheen :— Tall, middled- aged, looked like a drover; wore a long dark coat, whitish trowsers, and a red hand- kerchief round neck. DESCRIPTION of a man, name and native place un- known, but calls himself Campbell, who stands charged with having, on the morning of the 17th December, 1885, in the barony of Lower Ormond, parish of Dorrha, stolen a sheep, the property of Mr. Thomas Slattery, and sold it to a butcher in Nenagh, and immediately left in the direction of Limerick:— Dark eyes, flat nose dark complexion, round face, stout make, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, about 45 to 48 years of age, black hair; wore a dark green coat, trowsers, and vest ( tweed), carried on his arm a twilled waterproof overcoat, wore an imitation gold watch chain; speaks with a Scotch accent, and looks like a steward. Two persons, names and native places unknown, who stand charged with having on the night of the 11th December, 1885, in the barony of Upper Ormond, parish of Kilmore, been two Moonlighters, armed with revolvers, who entered the house of Denis Manning, of Ballincur, and forcibly took therefrom a double- barrelled gun, not arrested ; Hue- and- Cry, 15th December, 1885. DESCRIPTION of John Maher, native cf Piltown ( near Clashmore', who stands charged with having, on the 27th December, 1885, in the barony of Decies- within- Drum, parish of Ardmore, committed a rape at Garanaspec :— Prominent teeth, gray eyes, long nose, fresh complexion, thin face, medium make, 5 feet 8£ inches high, about 20 years of age, light brown hair; wore a low black hat, dark tweed coat, tweed trowsers, and vest; is a labourer. DESCRIPTION of James Gammell, native of Kil- coole, who stands charged with having, on the 27th of September, 1885, in the barony of Newcastle, parish of Kilcoole, committed a rape on one Esther Byrne, of same townland, and who failed to appear and take his trial at the Leinster Assizes, at Wicklow, on 10th day of December, 1885, in answer to his bail, and who has since absconded :— Cast in one eye, supposed left, gray eyes, long nose, fair complexion, long thin face, slender make, 6 feet high, about 26 years of age, brown hair; wore a small black hard hat, black cloth coat,. dark tweed trowsers, old brown seal vest; is a shoemaker.
