For more than 6,000 years he has been trying to persuade men that God does not love them. He succeeded in making our first parents believe this lie, and he too often succeeds with their children. What prompted God to give up Christ ? What prompted Christ to die if it were not love? " Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friend." Christ laid down His life for His enemies, and while they derided Him on the Cross, He prayed, " Father, forgive them," there was nothing but love in His heart. We are told of the length, breadth, depth, and height of His love. Columbus discovered America, but what did he know of its mountains, rivers, forests, and Mississippi Valley t So manyjof us have discovered something of the love of God, but there are heights and depths that we do not know. If we study His word, we find His love is unchange- able. Just before the Lord Jesus left His disciples, one of whom should betray Him, another deny Him, all forsake Him ; it is recorded " Having loved His own, He loved them unto the end." Not only unchangeable, His love is unfailing : and another thought is, He loved us long before we ever thought of Him. If you ask me why God should thus love us, I cannot tell. In John xiv. we read, " If a man love Me he will keep My words, and My Father will love him, and We will come unto him " and make our abode with him. Would to God that our puny minds could grasp this great truth that the Father and the Son so love us that They desire to come and abide in our hearts, not tarry for a night, but come and abide with us. Let this love of God be shed abroad in your hearts by the Holy Ghost to- day ; it will drive away dark- ness and gloom and sin, peace and joy will be yours.
