'• What do you mean by these figures 1885 1" asked a Christian man, pointing to the bill just rendered to hiiu by a sceptical tailor. " Mean, sir 1" answered the astonished tradesman—" mean, sir 1 Why the date of the year, certainly." " Date of the year," re- peated his customer, " date of the year, since when ? net since the creation, I suppose 1" The tailor looked at him, then suddenly guessing his meaning, he made no reply, but appeared very embarrassed. " Has it ever occurred to you," the gentleman then proceeded, " what an extraordinary thing it is, that far more than half of the civilised world changed the date of their chronology, and began a new era of time, reckoned from the birth of one who, as a man, was in a low position of life, never travelled fifty miles from his native home, never won a victory in the ordinary sense of the word, never thrilled a nation with his eloquence, but died a young man at the age of thirty- three, a death of shame and torture1?" The man still made no answer, and the customer, taking up his bill, and wishing him good morning, left the shop, his heart lifted in earnest prayer that God the Holy Ghost would use the message ; and so He did. The question fastened itself upon the man's mind. Again and again he thought it over, what could have been the meaning of such a remarkable circumstance ? Had the Lord Jesus been a corfqueror, such as Alexander, who subdued all the known world, one might have understood it; or even one of the proud and tyrannical emperors of Kome might have insisted on such a thing, tnat his name should for ever be handed down to posterity ; but that the birth of Jesus Christ should be the event from which for nearly trwo thousand years the civilised world had reckoned time, he could not understand : he had never thought of it before. Soon he began to feel that there must have been something more than human in Him to account for it. His heart was troubled, and heeagerlv looked out for another visit from the Christian gentleman. It was not long before he came again. One conversation led to another ; the man was induced to study the Bible for himself, and found that there was indeed a power ir^ the life of Jesus which proved Him to be divine. This power became " the power of God unto salva- tion " to the infidel; he accepted Christ as his Saviour and Lord, and became an earnest Christian. Now he no longer wonders that the number of the year should have been changed to chronicle the greatest, the most glorious event which ever happened in our world, when He who " was God" took upon Him our nature, and made Himself as one of us, that, dying in our stead, He might raise us to His kingdom and glory.
