METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 58.— The attention of police is directed to the proceedings of a man who writes letters from Barce- lona, signed " MARTIN GALA," to gentlemen in dif- ferent parts of the country. He represents that, through political affairs, he was compelled to fly from Spain, but that on his return he made the acquaint- ance of Mr. Brown, an English gentleman, who a short time before his death entrusted him with the delivery of diamonds of great value to a lady residing in England. Failing in his endeavours to discover her, he was requested by Mr. Brown to write to a certain gentleman, who would assist him in his inquiries ; but if unsuccessful the property was to be delivered to him. He adds that on arriving in Spain he was arrested for sedition, and the parcel containing the diamonds is detained at his hotel; but should the recipient of the letter remit the cost of forwarding the treasure, he would be handsomely rewarded for his services. He tells other stories regarding his troubles, but all generally end, sooner or later, with a request for money.- The proceeding is an attempt to procure money by what is called " The Spanish Swindle." Thou art not very far from the Kingdom of God ! Thou hast heard the sweet call of the King ; Thou hast met the glad messengers speeding abroad His free- hearted welcome to bring. And that Kingdom looks fair,— but, the world is so dear, With its labour, and pleasure, and sin,— And yet it were sad to have seen it so near, And never to enter therein. Thou art not very far from the foot of the Cross, Its shadow is falling on thee ; And the blood that redeemeth the sinner from loss Is flowing so rich and so free ; The Cross of Atonement, that ransoming blood, Is a saving or sentencing sight. It is death at the foot of the Cross to have stood If thy robes were not washed and made white. Ah ! many were once as near Heaven as thou, But they lingered and lost their day ; They are wailing, and weeping, and wandering now On the coasts of the far- away. They are far from the kingdom, and far from the Crown, From Christ and nis ransoming Cross ; Oh, infinite sadness ! No tears but His own Can weep such a fathomless loss. Yes ! " not very far " is a station of grace, But, beware, oh ! sinner, beware, For " not very far" is a perilous place ; Thou art lost shouldst thou linger there. A. It. COUSIN.
