SPECIAL NOTICE. FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A case has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests, that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is un- willing to incur any expense, with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communi- cation sent to this Offioe to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for the adoption of such a course will be apparent from the fact that the POLICE GAZETTE is circulated in the Colonies. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. Whenever you hear of a cricket match being played your first question is, " What are the sides 1" If it is Oxford versus Cambridge, or England versus Australia, you expect to hear of a close contest. So, too, if some morning the papers tell us that war has broken out between two Great Powers we expect a teirible strug- gle. If you are really converted to Christ, you too must be ready for a conflict between two strong op- posing sides in yourself. War fs declared between the flesh " and " the spirit," between " the old man " and " the new man." Before conversion there is no war, only a false, dangerous peace. When you first come to the Saviour you receive the new heart and His Holy Spirit. Your old self is not removed. What is done to it? The Captain of our salvation has over- come the mutineer, disarmed him, and sentenced him to death. Is he dead yet 1 No; only bound. As soon as ever you reach the port that old scoundrel will be executed ; but till the port is gained— until death— you have the mutineer under your charge. This is what too often happens. A Christian is off his guard, idle, prayerless, sleepy, and the old rebel gets out of the hold where the Captain put him, and he comes up on deck, and causes a mutiny. What shall be done ? Call to the Great Captain of our salvation. Tell Him all about it. Ask Him once more to put down and bind your old self. Just as at Khartoum the place was captured owing to a traitor being within the walls, so, too, your greatest danger lies in the enemy lurking within your own self. It is useless to underrate the power of this enemy, but it is even worse to under- rate the power of Lord Jesus. Does it sometimes seem as if you were not on the winning side 1 Take courage.
