All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTB, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as lo stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, ani the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may b:. 1. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents, or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, mill be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the ofice, Great Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond f Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are acccpted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 126, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. SPECIAL NOTICE. FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. • L A recent case has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension wa3 sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests, that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is un- willing to incur any expense, with a. view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communi- cation sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for the adoption of such a course will be apparent from the fact that the POLICE GAZBTTE is circulated in the Colonies. SPECIAL NOTICE, PERSONS IN CUSTODY. EXPLOSIONS. Age 22, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion swarthy, broad features, thick upper lip, hair dark brown, worn smoothed, and not disarranged as in woodcut, eyes ( sunken) dark, no hair on face, scar top of third finger right hand, one ditto right forearm; dress, dark brown overcoat, black walking coat and vest, black- and- blue striped mixture trousers, turn- down collar, light silk scarf, black round felt hat, maker " Spellman, New York;" an Irishman, of Gartnamona, county Cork, Has spent some years in Ame- rica, arrived not long ago from Ame- rica, and may have spent some weeks lately in large towns where Irish congregate. HARRY BURTON, aged 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight, com- plexion fair, hair brown, long sandv moustache, eyes grey, high cheek bones, very hollow cheeks, consump- tive appearance, round shouldered, turns his feet out when walking, speaks with an American accent; dress, black diagonal overcoat, black woollen under do. and vest, " London and Liverpool Clothing Co., New York," on tab, brown trousers with small blue stripe, white stand- up collar, blue tie with brown spots, lace boots, black hard felt hat. A cabinet- maker. Born in Liverpool, supposed of Irish parentage. States he went to America when a boy. CHESHIRE. 14.— Altrincham ( County).— For stealing £ 45 at Wincham, JAMES COOKE, alias JEMMY THE LEVELLER, age about 45, rather stout, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion florid, hair and whiskers brown. A boatman, native of Salford or Manchester, supposed formerly employed as night soil man in the neighbour- hood of Salford. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Leighton, Altrincham. 15.— Chester ( City).— For embezzlement— JOHN HENRY GARRETT, age about 32, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion florid, hair dark brown, beard ( pointed) light brown, eyes ( penetrating) dark brown, aquiline nose, raises one side of upper lip when talking ; dress, grey mixture- or brown suit, horsey appearance. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Fenwick, Chester. 16.— Stockport ( Borough). — For stealing, 17th ult., a pair of men's watertight boots, size 7, straight toecaps ( nearly new)— JOHN GREEN, alias WIL- LIAM GREAYES, age about 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., slight, hair and moustache light; dress, black morning coat, brown trousers, white collar and tie, old boots, hard felt hat. A tramping tailor, supposed native of Harrogate, belongs to the Tailors' Society, and will most likely call upon their Secretaries at places where he passes through. £ 5 REWARD. 17.— Stockport ( Borough).— For stealing, 2nd inst., from a branch post- office, a small brown canvas bag, marked outside " 44, G. P. O. M." containing 2 ± 10 Bank of England notes* Nos. may be 25579, 25580 25581, 25582, 25587, dated 22- R Manchester, January 7, 1884, or 702080, dated S. June 23, 1884 ; one of the notes has been torn in two and fastened with gum paper, banker's mark on front in ink, 65 on one and 66 the other; 2 £ 5 Bank of England notes, banker's mark 9634 on one and 9353 the other ; all endorsed on back " H. Heys, received for S. B. B., 2- 4- 85, C. O." ; 1 £ 5 ditto, endorsed " E. A. Morgan, received for S. B. B., 1- 4- 85, C. O." ; all are stamped at back with the office stamp " Heaton Norris, Stockport, C., April 2, 1885" ; and about £ 15 10s. in gdld— A MAN, age about 23, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight, hair and moustache light brown, of gentlemanly appearance and good address, dress light coat ( supposed short dust coat), white tie, high black hat. Can be identified. The above reward will be paid by Christina Oldfield, 67, Wellington- road, North Stockport, for the appre- hension and conviction of the thief and recovery of the money, or in proportion to the amount recovered. DERBYSHIRE. 18.— Derby ( Borough).— For embezzlement, 6th inst.— THOMAS DEWICK, a coal agent, age about 40, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout, complexion fresh, hair light brown, side whiskers slight, moustache light ; dress, light coloured check suit. Friends reside at South Kilworth, near Rugby, where his wife died in June, 1882. Warrant issued. 19.— Derby ( Borough).— For stealing £ 20, 21st ult. — EDWARD WRIGHT, age 32, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion sallow, hair dark brown, moustache ( slight) dark, eyes grey, lame right leg, walks on front part of foot, and when picking it up appears to throw it forward, ankle has been injured, of dirty appearance and drunken habits ; dress, blue cloth overcoat, heavy lace boots, black hat. A native of Hanley; was lately employed as groom by George Ginnett, circus proprietor, and is well known to travelling circus attendants. Warrant issued. Information to Lieut.- Col. Sentenced at Preston on the 19th August, 1880, to 12 months' hard labour and 4 years' police supervision for larceny ( person). 188.— License Holder ROBERT MORRI- SON, Office No. 23643, age 44, height 5 ft. 4 in., com- plexion fresh, hair grey, eyes dark. Warrant issued. 7.— W Division.— Woodcut portrait and descrip- tion of SAMUEL SMITH, whose apprehension is Office No. 24856, who escaped from H. M.' s Prison Holloway, the 8th inst., while undergoing a term of imprisonment for warehouse breaking. Age 31, height 5 feet, complexion dark, hair brown, eyes hazel, clean shaved, stout build, full face, indistinct tattoo marks all over left arm, E. and C. on left wrist. Dress when escaped, prison clothes, drab waistcoat and trousers, blue stockings, red stripes. Had both heels fractured, which may compel him to seek refuge in a hospital or workhouse. A dangerous and expert burglar. Sen- tenced at the Middlesex Sessions the 18th January, 1875, to 10 years' penal servitude and 7 years' police supervision for larceny, < fcc. Reg. No. B. 110. Known to Detective P. S. Hatse, City Police. 2.— B Division.— For forging and uttering cheques- HENRI BRAUN, alias BROWN, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion very sallow, hair black, eyes dark, clean shaved, thick lips, twitching eyes, large projecting ears, dress dark morning suit, high black hat. A butler, native of Germany. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Warrant issued. 3.— C Division.— For stealing a silver Geneva watch and purse— ALFRED TAYLOR, age 28, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion clark, rhair, whiskers, and mous- tache dark brown, eyes hazel, large nose ; dress, black diagonal cutaway coat, grey trousers, black hard felt hat. A native of Middlesbrough ; was formerly a police constable in the West Riding Constabulary at Wakefield. Warrant issued. 4.— E Division.— For stealing £ 120 in gold, the moneys of the London and Westminster Loan Com- pany, 62, St. Martin's- lane— THOMAS EDWARD RUSSELL, age 34, height 5 ft. 4in., stout, complexion I pale, hair and eyes dark, full face, turns his feet out when walking, speaks with a North- country accent; dress, black diagonal cutaway coat and vest, dark mixture trousers, side- spring boots, high black hat ; a native of Newcastle- upon- Tyne. £ 50 REWARD. 5.— G Divison.— For fraud- SAMUEL BLOOM- F1ELD, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion florid, I hair brown, moustache light, thin features; dress, short black overcoat, brown kid gloves, high hat, wears a five pointed masonic pin, pearl in centre ; a solicitor, lately practised at Moorgate- street. Is well known at Margate. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. Arthur Millington, 3, Arthur Terrace, Margate, for such information as will lead to his arrest. R Division.— Woodcut portrait and descrip- sought for embezzling £ 15 19s. 6d., age 52, height 5 ft. 8 in., very stout, complexion pale, hair, whiskers and moustache grey, eyes hazel; dress, dark grey dust coat, black under ditto, double- breasted vest, grey mixture trousers, soft felt hat. CITY OF LONDON. 8.— For stealing a cheque for £ 95 2s. 3d.— EVAN EDWARD DAVIES, age 26 to 28, height 5 ft. 9 Or 10 in., complexion rather fresh, hair brown, moustache slight, eyes grey, very full face ; dress, respectable, wore a high silk hat with broad brim. A solicitor's clerk ; lately resided at 36, Gordon- road, Stoke New- ington. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Moor- lane Station, E. C- 9.- rFor fraud— BARTLE GEORGE GOLDSMID, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 or. 9 in., rather slight, complexion swarthy, hair, small side whiskers and moustache black, smart gentlemanly appearance, believed to be a German Jew, well dressed. A stockbroker, late of 13, Queen's Gate Terrace, S W., and 3, Drapers' Gardens, E. C. Warrant issued. 10.— For obtaining goods by means of worthless cheques— MOSES MARTIN, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 11 in., very stout, complexion florid, hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache ( tinged with red) dark, appearance of a butcher; dress, dark clothes, hard round felt hat. Is well known at Etchingham and Frant, Sussex; also at Ware, Herts. Lately resided at Park- lane, Tottenham* and Angel- lane, Edmonton. — PRICE MORGAN, alias DICK MORGAN, GEORGE SHORN, and GEORGE SAUNDERS, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., hair brown, moustache dark, full face, talks husky ; dress, Newmarket overcoat, white handkerchief round neck, black hard felt hat. A painter ; native of Aylesbury. Has worked in many places in the Midland Counties Supposed known at Southampton. Was sentenced at Bedfordshire Quarter Sessions in January, 1883, to 12 months' imprisonment for housebreaking. Information to Head Constable Jaquest, Luton. Attends meetings of the Salvation Army at Clapham. Information to Supt. Dobson, Brentwood. 22.— Thorpe { County^.— For obtaining, 31st ult., by false pretences, a single tricycle, wooden seat, brown velvet cushion, front steerer, steerage on left hand, plated rail round brass plate on frame to mount by— HENRY WYLDE, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair brown ; dress, long ulster ( old), dark hard felt hat. JE5 REWARD. 23.— Holywell { County).— Woodcut portrait and description of MARTIN BROWN ( Case No. 27, 17th February last), whose apprehension is sought for forging a Bill of Exchange for £ 100 on the London and Provincial Bank, Limited, age 30, height 6 ft., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown, whiskers shaved off, eyes grey, rather squeaking voice, stoops slightly, lost a tooth near front of upper jaw ; dress, dark cloth jacket, tweed trousers. A brewer ; native of Riawtenstall, Lancashire. Has been staying in Swansea for some time, and is supposed to have left for Cardiff on I4th inst. It is requested that inquiry be made at shipping offices, outward bound vessels, hotels, billiard rooms, & c. The above reward will be paid by the London and Provincial Banking Company, Limited, for his appre- hension. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Supposed native of Brighton. 29.— Bournemouth { County).— For stealing, 31st ult., a small gold Geneva watch, engraved back, No. 22- 300, Maker, Motter— A MAN, age 40 to 50, height about 5 ft. 8 in., whiskers and moustache grey ; dress, grey dust coat, dark tweed trousers, boots with cloth uppers ( old), hard felt hat. Information to Head Constable Alexander, Bourne- mouth. 30.— Lymington { County).— For embezzlement— HARRY HARVEY, age 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion florid, hair light brown, moustache slight, eyes light, full face, looks down when spoken to. HEREFORDSHIRE. 31.— Hereford { County).— For stealing, 17th inst., at Longtown, a brown plaid jacket ( faded), 2 pockets outside, black bone buttons, a black cloth vest, 2 pockets outside, 1 inside breast, black buttons, and a pair of brown speckled trousers, patched on left hip— A MAN, age 46, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sun- burnt, hair and beard ( long) brown, eyes grey, tender feet; dress, stolen suit, white scarf, lace boots ( heavy), black hat, left behind an old suit, a discharge from the Royal Marine Artillery in name of Henry Williams, blacksmith, Saint Michaels, Gloucester, dated 16th September, 1875, and a rabbit net. Information to Deputy Chief Constable, Cope, Hereford. 32.— Ross { County).— For stealing, 29th ult., a heavy dark grey woollen shawl, light grey border, plaid squares at corners, dark grey fringe, small hole ( repaired) near centre— A WOMAN, age 35 to 40, rather short, hair dark, full face, shows her upper teeth; dress, black jacket, black woollen crossover dark dress, black close bonnet, trimmed black velvet, kid gloves, of respectable appearance ; carried a small parcel wrapped in a newspaper. Information to Supt. Smith, Ross. 33.— Weobley { County).— For obtaining food and a passenger ticket by false pretences at Dorstone— GEORGE THOMAS LANGFORD WHEELER, age about 26, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion florid, hair and moustache ( heavy) dark ; dress, blue serge suit ( such as is worn by petty officers}, cap with peak; stated he was a ship's steward or mate, and was making his way to Newport, Monmouthshire. A native of 79, Kingsley- road, Princes- park, Liverpool. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ovens, Weobley. S. inside, buttons marked Reformatory, Neath. Information to Supt. Phillips, Neath, by whom the above reward will be paid for his apprehension.
