All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTB, and all couimunicati ms upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOR OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, GKBAT SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. iParticulars eoneerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GA/. ETTB, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another ) » rce. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one its fie, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all eases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, ani the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15 » . per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, mutt be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the thief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may I:. 1. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an offieer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 6 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and trt alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. - The. force which causes particulars concerning delinquents, or stolen property to be inserted fat fhe POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to Hit EdiUr notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement fjr insertion in the next issme. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, tcM be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not Mn thin noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They auat be clearly - written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual farm, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Great Scotland Yard, by c& tfm, crossed " Drummond ^ Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. SPECIAL NOTICE. SPECIAL NOTICE. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. EXPLOSION w ESSEX. The Fund established for the benefit of the widow and children of the late Inspector Simmons, of the Essex Constabulary, who was shot by a burglar on the 20th January last, has reached about £ 780, and it is desired it should be increased up to at least £ 1,000. Major Poyntz, Chief Constable's Office, Chelmsford, will be glad to receive towards the Fund any contri- butions which sympathisers with this sad case may he pleased to remit. IDENTIFICATION OF UNCLAIMED BODIES. The attention of the Editor has been directed to the want of any system existing for the publication of descriptions of dead bodies coming into the hands of Police, and which are buried without having been iden- tified. It having been suggested that the particulars should be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, the Editor will be glad to print any information which it may be considered desirable to publish. OODCUT PORTRAIT and description of JAMES GILBERT CUNNINGHAM, alias D ALTON, alias GILBERT, remanded at Bow- street Police- court till Friday, 27th inst., charged with " being concerned, with others, in maliciously causing an explosion at the Tower of London on the 24th Jan, last. Age 22, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion swarthy, broadfeatures, thick upper lip, hair dark brown, worn smoothed, and not disarranged as in woodcut, eyes ( sunken) dark, no hair on face, scar top of third finger right hand, one ditto right forearm; dress, dark brown overcoat, black walking coat and vest, black- and- blue strij mixture trousers, turn- down col light silk scarf, black round felt hat, maker " Spellman, New York;" an Irishman, of Gartnamona, county Cork, Has spent some years in Ame- rica, arrived not long ago from Ame- rica, and may have spent some weeks lately in large towns where Irish congregate. HARRY BURTON, aged 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight, com- plexion fair, hair brown, long sandy moustache, eyes grey, high cheek bones, very hollow cheeks, consump- tive appearance, round shouldered, turns his feet out when walking, speaks with an American accent; dress, black diagonal overcoat, black woollen under do- and vest, " London and Liverpool Clothing Co., New York," on tab, brown trousers with small blue stripe, white stand- up collar, blue tie with brown spots, lace ; boots, black hard felt hat. A cabinet- maker. Born in Liverpool, supposed of Irish parentage. States he went to America when a boy. It is specially requested that any in- formation which may be of service in tracing the associates or antecedents of these men be forwarded by telegram to Chief Superintendent Williamson, Great Scotland Yard, London, S. MARSHALL, a book- dealer, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in,, slight, complexion, hair, whiskers, moustache ( slight) and eyes dark, thin nose and lips, rather long face, low wrinkled forehead, of quiet demeanour, and carries his hands in his pockets, is believed to be an abstainer and non- smoker; dress, black diagonal coat and trousers, low black hat.— B. M AR- SHALL, a picture dealer, age 32, height 5 ft. 7 in., proportionate build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache ( slight) brown, eyes grey, large mouth, full round chin, of dissipated appearance and very talkative ; dress, dark clothes, low felt hat. The above brothers took a shop at 69, Harrow- road, on 25th September last, stocked it with second- hand books and pictures, and left on 18th December. It is possible that some information may be obtained respecting them at second- hand book dealers or auction rooms in the provinces- Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, Great Scotland Yard, London. A native of Ascot, Berkshire. Warrant issued. 2.— G Division — For stealing £ 25, 8th inst.— EDWARD MASON, age 37, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion fresh, hair, tuft on chin, and moustache, dark brown, lame left leg ; dress, black diagonal coat, black guernsey under, dark tweed trousers, black cloth cap with peak. A potman ; native of London. 3.— G Division.— For stealing £ 46 in gold— HENRY ROBERTS, age 42, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark, peculiar twitching of the eyes, turns his feet out when walking, belongs to the Royal Fusiliers Militia ; dress, regimentals, formerly played a tin whistle outside public- houses. A native of Clapham, Surrey. 4.— G Division.— For fraud— SAMUEL BLOOM- FIELD, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion florid, hair brown, moustache light, thin features ; dress, short black overcoat, brown kid gloves, high hat, wears a masonic pin with 5- pointed pearl in centre. A solicitor; native of London. Warrant issued. 5.— R Division.— For embezzlement— JAMES BERESFORD HOPE, a traveller, age 50, height 5 ft. 10 in., stout, complexion fresh, hair, whiskers and moustache ( turning grey) brown, chin shaved, of gentlemanly manner and appearance; dress, dark suit, high black hat. Warrant issued. 6.— W Division.— For embozzling £ 15 19s. 6d.— SAMUEL SMITH, age 52, height 5 ft. 8 in., very stout, complexion pale, hair, whiskers and moustache grey, eyes hazel; dress, dark grey dust coat, black under ditto, double- breasted vest, grey mixture trousers, soft felt hat. A rate collector ; lately resided at 61, Wandle- road, Croydon. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, Great Scotland Yard, London, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 7.— For obtaining goods by means of worthless cheques— MOSES MARTIN, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 11 in., very stout, complexion florid, hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache ( tinged with red) dark, appearance of a butcher; dress, dark clothes, hard round felt hat. Is well known at Etchingham and Frant, Sussex; also at Ware, Herts. Lately resided at Park- lane, Tottenham, and Angel- lane, Edmonton. - PRICE MORGAN, alias DICK MORGAN, GEORGE SHORN, and GEORGE SAUNDERS, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., hair brown, moustache dark, full face, talks husky ; dress, Newmarket overcoat, white handkerchief round neck, black hard felt hat. Supposed native of South Wales. Friends reside at 104, Tony Pandy, near Pontypridd, South Wales. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective Department, Old Jewry, E. C. BEDFORDSHIRE. 8.— Biggleswade ( County).— For embezzlement at Henlow— GEORGE HENRY GRANT, a brewer's agent, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout, complexion fresh, no whiskers, bow- legged, broad features, very talkative, fond of racing, and has the appearance of person addicted to drink. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bedlow, Biggleswade. 9.— Luton ( Borough).— For stealing, 19th inst., a silver Geneva watch ( recovered), a gold- plated chain with compass attached, and 7s. 6d. — EDWARD GEORGE, alias HEDGES, age 25, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fair, moustache light ; dress, dark cutaway coat ( very greasy), dark trousers and vest, lace boots, hard felt hat. A painter ; native of Aylesbury. Has worked in many places in the Midland Counties. Supposed known at Southampton. Was sentenced at Bedfordshire Quarter Sessions in January, 1883, to 12 months' imprisonment for housebreaking. Information to Head Constable Jaquest, Luton. BERKSHIRE. 10.— Maidenhead ( Borough). — For embezzling, 23rd inst., the money of the Maidenhead Rowing Club — JAMES WILLIAM GODSELL, age 30, height 5 ft. 8J in., complexion fresh, hair ( cut short) dark brown, moustache and side whiskers ( slight) light, eyes blue, good looking, is fond of rowing and card- playing ; dress, brown coat, buttoned up to chin, drab trousers, turn down collar with tie, hard felt hat. A lawyer's clerk, and is a good shorthand writer; native of Gloucester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Maidenhead. CARNARVONSHIRE. 11.— Pwllheli ( County).— For obtaining £ 14 5s. by false pretences 16th inst.— A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, whiskers ( slight) and beard ( turning grey) light, thin features; dress, brown plaid cloth jacket, light grey trousers, turn down collar, grey tie, dark howler hat. A Welshman; frequents fairs. Information to Supt. Hughes, Pwllheli. CHESHIRE. 12.— Altrincham ( County).— For stealing a silver watch entrusted to him for repairs— T. A. ASHBEY, age about 38, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache and tuft on chin sandy, im- pediment in speech. A jobbing watchmaker ; lately resided at Altrincham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Leighton, Altrincham. 13.— Wirksworth ( County). — For embezzling £ 33 3s .- BENJAMIN PEARSON, age 27 or 28, height 5 ft. 9 in. complexion fair, hair and moustache light. Father resides at 44, Thompson- street, Shipley, Yorks. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Borrett, Wirksworth. 14.— Stockport ( Borough).— For stealing, 6th inst., a shepherd plaid shawl ( dirty), small piece of fringe torn off; 1 peach, red- and- white neckerchief ( nearly new); 1 plain calico chemise; 1 roller towel, pink edges ; a man's cotton shirt, and 2 paits of spectacles— ANTHONY HENAGHAN, alias BILL LONGSON, age about 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout, hair ( turning grey) dark, round shouldered, deeply pockpitted, woman holding flag, and some letters tattooed left forearm, upper front teeth deficient; dress, black worsted coat, corduroy vest, moleskin trousers ( old and dirty) lace clogs ( heavy), skull cap. Supposed accompanied by a woman and 2 children. A labourer or stoker. Supposed previously convicted. May be found at common lodging houses. 15.— Stockport ( Borough). — For stealing, 12th inst., a plain calico chemise, stain mark on breast— SARAH ANN age about 20, medium height, hair dark, fringe on forehead, combed back, abscess marks left side of face and neck ; dress, black skirt and shawl, clasp clogs with brass nails round toes. Stated she was a cardroom hand, and belonged to Pendlebury. 16.— Stockport ( Borough). — For stealing a blanket, 10th inst— ANN COOKNEY, alias JONES, age about 50, stout and short, hair grey ; dress, light skirt, paisley shawl, green centre, button boots, bonnet trimmed imitation wheat. Stated she came from Macclesfield. May be found at common lodging houses. Information to Lieut.- Col. Staples, Stockport. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 17.— Gloucester ( County). — For larceny — DANIEL FRANKLIN, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache grey, whiskers slight, eyes dark brown, long features, high cheekbones, careworn appearance, hangs his head for- ward when walking ; dress, black Witney overcoat, dark suit ( may be wearing grey trousers), black bowler hat. A solicitor; native of Gloucester. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Chipp, Gloucester. HAMPSHIRE. 18.— Aldershot ( County).— For deserting wife and family- CHARLES CHANDLER, a gardener, age 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, turns his feet out when walking. Warrant issued. 19.— Aldershot ( County).— For deserting family— FREDERICK MILLS, a labourer, age 36 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion and hair dark, clean shaved, turns his feet out when walking. Warrant issued. 20.— Aldershot ( County).— For deserting wife and family— JOHN WOOD, age 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel. A tailor, speaks with German accent; has been in the 52nd Regiment. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Stephenson, Aldershot. 21.— Bournemouth ( County).— For obtaining a quantity of electro- plated spoons, knives, forks, & c., by false pretences— GEORGE HAMILTON ROE, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., hair ( bald at back) dark brown, whiskers and moustache ginger, eyes dark, stoops slightly, walks quickly, and flourishes his walking stick about; dress, black diagonal suit, felt hat, wore a horseshoe pin with diamond, and a large diamond ring. Had in his possession a gold pencil- case with crest— a squirrel. Stated he came from FRIDAY, MARCH 27, 1885. THE POLICE GAZETTE. Melbourne. HERTFORDSHIRE. 22.— Bishop's Stortford ( County).— For stealing two £ 5 Bank of England notes, one dated 18th August, 1884, No. 71865, and £ 5 gold— ELIZABETH TALLIS, alias SAUNDERS, age 39, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark auburn, eyes dark, abscess scars left side of neck, shows two prominent teeth when laughing; dress, dogskin jacket, dark dress, plum colour bonnet; a native of Manchester. 23.— Ware ( County).— For deserting wife and child — CHARLES BURROWS, age 26, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, promi- nent nose, thick bottom lip. A native of Welwyn ; is known at Whittlesea. Warrant issued. -.. Information to Supt. Arrowsmith, Ware. KENT. 24.— Faversham ( County).— For stealing a watch ( recovered)— JOHN WILLIAMS, age 25, height 5 ft. 6' or 7 in., complexion, hair and whiskers ( slight) dark, no moustache, face full and blotched, very delicate hands ; dress, dark coat and trousers, light necktie, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Mayne, Sittingbourne. 25.— Sandwich ^ County).— Woodcut portrait and description of AMOS SHARMAN, whose apprehen- sion is sought for embezzling £ 16 17s 6d, 8th inst., age about 40, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion and eyes dark, hair ( slightly grey) black, tender feet, stoops when walking; dress, long black Witney overcoat, light trousers. A carpenter, but has been employed as clerk for several years at Broadstairs. Supposed native of Northampton. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Kewell, Sandwich. 26.— Tonbridge ( County).— For deserting wife at Speldhurst— WILLIAM WATSON ( supposed false), age 36, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion, hair ( parted in- centre), whiskers ( cut close), moustache, and eyes dark, several scars right leg, testicles swollen, and wears an instrument; dress, brown cloth jacket and trousers, black hard felt hat, carried with him a bundle containing a black coat and vest, and a pair Scotch tweed trousers. A wheelwright and coach- builder ; supposed native of Yorkshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Barnes, Tollbridge. ' 27.— Gravesend ( Borough). — For stealing, 18th inst., from Milton Barracks, 6 Egyptian medals, en graved Coglan 29 Cy., Lovelock 33 Cy., Gardener 25 Cy., Sexton 33 Cy., Royal Marines- RIVERS, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion dark, hair and moustache ( slight) brown ; dress, black diagonal coat,' check trousers, blue shirt, Wellington boots, with spur- holes, brown felt hat. Has served in the Royal Marines. Information to Chief Constable Berry, Gravesend. turned case, white dial, one hand supposed steel one gold, seconds ditto, maker " Grundy," nickel silver guard, common pattern, with 2 watch keys and a small foreign coin attached— A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., moustache ( heavy) black, hair ( parted in centre and cut short in front) dark, round features ; dress, black pilot overcoat, white moleskin trousers, side- spring boots, black hard felt hat. Information to Supt. Holland, Bolton. 30.— Old Trafford ( County).— For failing to re- port— License Holder WILLIAM BENTLEY, Office No. 24000, age 54, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair grey ( bald), eyes light blue, scars right side of head and between eyebrows, mole left cheek and 3 on right, mole on side ( large), cupping marks on back. Sentenced at Glasgow the 4th September, 1879, to 7 years' penal servitude for burglary. Licensed 14th February, 1884. E 1292. — Supervisee ELLEN BRETHERTON, Office No. 19059, age 34, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, scar left side of forehead, noso crooked- Sentenced at Liverpool the 2nd November, 1880, to 18 months' hajd labour and 3 years' police supervision for larceny ( person). 2479. Information to the Supt. County Police Office, Old Trafford. 31.— Liverpool ( City).— For forging and uttering a cheque for £ 235, purporting to be drawn in favour of S. Saunders, signed S. R. Piatt, and obtaining two £ 100 Bank of England notes, dated Liverpool, 2nd March, 1883, Nos. 82- m 91281 and 91282; one £ 20 Bank of England note, dated Liverpool, 6th March, 1883, No. 80- m 68701, and £ 15 in gold— A MAN, who gave the name of S. SAUNDERS, age about 28, com- plexion fresh, hair light, clean shaved, may have slight moustache ; dress, respectable. Is supposed to have in his possession a blank cheque, No. 32/ 425449: with which he may endeavour to obtain money. Information to Chief Supt. Williams, Detective De partment, Liverpool. 32.— Oldham ( Borough).— For failing to report- Supervisee JOHN CALLIGHAN, alias SWAN and MATTHEWS, Office No. 22943, age 72, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes grey, scar left side chin. Sentenced at Salford the 8th January, 1883, to 9 calendar months' imprisonment with hard labour, and 4 years' police supervision for felony. 9151. Information to Chief Constable Hodgkinson, Oldham. - i 33.— Salford ( Borough). — For attempted murder— PATRICK or PARKEY GRANT, age about 20, height ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair light, moustache slight; dress, black ribbed_ clot) i coat and vest, black cord trousers, white muffler, billycock hat.— WILLIAM MURPHY, age 20, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion dark, tender eyes, squints, full reund face, turned up nose ; dress, dark cutaway coat and vest, light cord trousers, hard billycok or slogger cap. 34.— Salford ( Borough).— For stealing a watch ( recovered)— ROBERT ATHERTON, age about 28, height 5 ft. 8i in , complexion fresh, hair black, mous- tache dark; dress, pepper- and- salt coloured cloth suit, white collar, black tie, lace boots, high hat. 35.— Salford ( Borough).— For indecent assault— HERBERT MASON, age 18, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., slight, complexion sallow, hair dark brown; dress, black cloth coat, dark tweed trousers and vest, clogs, high hat. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Salford. shirt, black- and- white scarf, low shoes, black hard felt hat. A well- known thief. Was committed for trial at Louth, 27th ult., for stealing a ham. Frequents low beerhouses and lodging- houses; makes wire puzzles, and sells them at markets. May attempt to go abroad in a steamship as stoker or coal trimmer. Has been in the Lincoln Militia. Information to Head Constable Lloyd, Louth. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 37.— Peterborough ( Liberty of).— For stealing, 10th inst., £ Z 10s. gold, £ 4 10s. silver, and a pair of black tweed trousers, lined white calico, fly fronts worn) — ALFRED FISHER, alias JERRY" and POTTER, age 20 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in.,. complexion fresh, hair ( inclined to curl on top) dark brown, moustache ( slight) dark, proportionate build, long visage, two front teeth in upper jaw broken and decayed ; dress, brown mixture overcoat, dark brown worsted jacket, pockets at sides ; blue serge trousers and vest, lace boots ( one with hole at back), black hard felt hat, with large brim. A costermonger ; native of Cambridge, lately resided at Carton End, Peterborough. Attends markets, selling earthenware, oranges, & c. Warrant issued.
