THE POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MARCH 20, 1885. VOL. IT., NO. 128. REGULATIONS- 1. All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, GEEAT SCOTLAND YAKD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTB, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. i. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, ani the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may b;. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinqutftts, or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. Great Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond # Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. SPECIAL NOTICE. ESSEX. The Fund established for the benefit of the widow and children of the late Inspector Simmons, of the Essex Constabulary, who was shot by a burglar on the 20th January last, has reached about £ 780, and it is desired it should be increased up to at. least £ 1,000. Major Poyntz, Chief Constable's Office, Chelmsford, will be glad to receive towards the Fund any contri- butions which sympathisers with this sad case may be pleased to remit. IDENTIFICATION OF BODIES. UNCLAIMED The attention of the Editor has been directed to the want of any system existing for the publication of descriptions of dead bodies coming into the hands of Police, and which are buried without having been iden- tified. It having been suggested that the particulars should be inserted in the POLICE GAZBTTE, the Editor will be glad to print any information which it may be considered desirable to publish. WOODCUT PORTRAIT and description of JAMES GILBERT CUNNINGHAM, alias DALTON, alias GILBERT, remanded at Bow- street Police- court till Monday, 23rd inst., charged with being concerned, with others, in maliciously causing an explosion at the Tower of London on the 24th Jan. last. Age 22, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion swarthy, broad features, thick upper lip, hair dark brown, worn smoothed, and not disarranged as in woodcut, eyes ( sunken) dark, no hair on face, scar top of third finger right hand, one ditto right forearm; dress, dark brown overcoat, black walking coat and vest, black- and- blue striped mixture trousers, turn- down collar, light silk scarf, black round felt hat, maker " Spellman, New York;" an Irishman, of Gartnamona, county Cork, Has spent some years in Ame- rica, arrived not long ago from Ame- rica, and may have spent some weeks lately in large towns where Irish congregate. HARRY BURTON, aged 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight, com- plexion fair, hair brown, long sandy moustache, eyes grey, high cheek bones, very hollow cheeks, consump- tive appearance, round shouldered, turns his feet out when walking, speaks with an American accent; dress, black diagonal overcoat, black woollen under do. and vest, " London and Liverpool Clothing Co., New York," on tab, brown trousers with small blue stripe, white stand- up collar, blue tie with brown spots, lace boots, black hard felt hat. A cabinet- maker. Born in Liverpool, supposed of Irish parentage. States he went to | America when a boy. It is specially requested that any in- formation which may be of service in tracing the associates or antecedents of these men be forwarded by telegram to Chief Superintendent Williamson, Great Scotland Yard, London, S. MARSHALL, a book- dealer, age 35, height 5 ft, 6 in,, slight, complexion, hair, whiskers, moustache ( slight) and eyes dark, thin nose and lips, rather long face, low wrinkled forehead, of quiet demeanour, and carries his hands in his pockets, is believed to be an abstainer and non- smoker; dress, black diagonal coat and trousers, low black hat.— B. MAR- SHALL, a picture dealer, age 32, height 5 ft. 7 in., proportionate build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache ( slight) brown, eyes grey, large mouth, full round chin, of dissipated appearance and very talkative ; dress, dark clothes, low felt hat, The above brothers took a shop at 69, Harrow- road, on 25th September last, stocked it with second- hand books and pictures, and left on 18th December. It is possible that some information may be obtained respecting them at second- hand book dealers or auction rooms in the provinces- Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, Great Scotland Yard, London. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— C Division.— For embezzling £ 46 13s., 13th ult.— JAMES BARTLETT, age 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion rather pale, hair, side whiskers, and moustache dark brown, eyes brown, slightly pock- pitted ; dress, dark suit, low black felt hat. A native of Ascott Berkshire. Warrant issued. 2.— G Division — For stealing £ 25, 8th inst.— EDWARD MASON, age 37, height 5 ft 5 in., com- plexion fresh, hair, tuft on chin, and moustache, dark brown, lame left leg ; dress, black diagonal coat, black guernsey under, dark tweed trousers, black cloth cap with peak. A potman ; native of London. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, Great Scotland Yard, London, S. W. BEDFORDSHIRE. 3.— Biggleswade ( County).— For embezzlement at Henlow— GEORGE HENRY GRANT, a brewer's agent, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout, complexion fresh, no whiskers, bow- legged, broad features, very talkative, fond of racing, and has the appearance of a person addicted to drink. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bedlow, Biggleswade. CHESHIRE. 4.— Altrincham ( County).— For stealing a silver watch entrusted to him for repairs— T. A. ASHBEY, age about 38, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache and tuft on chin sandy, im- pediment in speech. A jobbing watchmaker ; lately resided at Altrincham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt Leighton, Altrincham. 5.— Wirksworth ( County). — For embezzling £ 33 3 « .- BENJAMIN PEARSON, age 27 or 28, height 5 ft. 9 in. complexion fair, hair and moustache light. Father resides at 44, Thompson- street, Shipley, Yorks. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Borrett, Wirksworth. 6• Stockport ( Borough). — For stealing, 6th inst., a shepherd plaid shawl ( dirty), small piece of fringe torn off; 1 peach, red- and- white neckerchief ( nearly new); 1 plain calico chemise ; 1 roller towel, pink edges ; a man's cotton shirt, and 2 parrs of spectacles— ANTHONY HENAGHAN, alias BILL LONGSON, age about 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout, hair ( turning grey) dark, round shouldered, deeply pockpitted, woman holding flag, and some letters tattooed left forearm, upper front teeth deficient; dress, black worsted coat, corduroy vest, moleskin trousers ( old and dirty) lace clogs ( heavy), skull cap. Supposed accompanied by a woman and 2 children. A labourer or stoker. Supposed previously convicted. May be found at common lodging houses. 7. Stockport ( Borough). — For stealing, 12th inst., a plain calico chemise, stain mark on breast— SARAH ANN age about 20, medium height, hair dark, fringe on forehead, combed back, abscess marks left side of face and neck ; dress, black skirt and shawl, clasp clogs with brass nails round toes. Stated she was a cardroom hand, and belonged to Pendlebury. 8.— Stockport ( Borough). — For stealing a blanket, 10th inst— ANN COOKNEY, alias JONES, age about 50, stout and short, hair grey ; dress, light skirt, paisley shawl, green centre, button boots, bonnet trimmed imitation wheat. Stated she came from Macclesfield. May be found at common lodging houses. Information to Lieut.- Col. 1 Staples, Stockport. j I CORNWALL. 9.— Helston ( County).— For obtaining a horse ( re- covered) by false pretences— ROWLAND BRANDON, age about 19, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair ( long) light brown, thin face, no whiskers or mous- tache, stammers slightly when excited; dress, dark coat, pockets on hips, blue cloth vest with sleeves, dirty fustian trousers, lace boots, black round felt hat. Has been travelling in Devonshire with itinerant auc- tioneers. May be found employed at public- houses, or endeavour to go to sea. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Grant, Helston. DERBYSHIRE. 13.— Chesterfield ( Borough).— For obtaining goods by false pretences — THOMAS LOCKING, alias COGGLIS, age 23, height about 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion fair, hai^ light, clean shaved, blind right eye, bow- legged ; dress, dark cloth coat, grey vest, fustian trousers, clogs, black felt hat. A farm labourer ; has oeen previously convicted at Chesterfield, Calverton, and Mansfield.- FREDERICK JARVIS, age about 23, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair and whis- kers ( slight) light, cross- eyed, walks erect; dress, dark overcoat, grey suit, lace boots ( strong), light cloth deer- stalker hat. A farm labourer ; native of Mill Lane, Langley Green, near Oldbury, Worcester. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Emery, Chesterfield. DURHAM. 11.— Durham ( City). — For obtaining goods by false pretences, lGth ult.— THOMAS DEWAR, a painter, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., medium build, complexion fresh, hair ( tinged with grey) dark, large blue scar across nose, rather long face. Is well known at Spennymoor, Gateshead, and Newcastle- upon- Tyne, where his father and relatives reside. Warrant issued. It is requested that inquiry be made at painters, paper- hangers, & c. If found is to be arrested, and information forwarded to Chief Constable Smith, Durham. HAMPSHIRE. 12.— Bournemouth ( County).— For obtaining a quantity of electro- plated spoons, knives, forks, < fcc., by false pretences— GEORGE HAMILTON ROE, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., hair ( bald at back) dark brown, whiskers and moustache ginger, eyes dark, stoops slightly, walks quickly, and flourishes his walking stick about; dress, black diagonal suit, felt hat, wore a horseshoe pin with diamond, and a large diamond ring. Had in his possession a gold pencil- case with crest— a squirrel. Stated he came from Melbourne. Was accompanied by his wife, age about 27, rather short and stout, and a child about 12 months old. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Alexander, Bournemouth. HERTFORDSHIRE. 13.— Bishop's Stortford ( County).— For stealing two £ 5 Bank of England notes, one dated 18th August, 1884, No. 71865, and £ 5 gold— ELIZABETH TALLIS, alias SAUNDERS, age 39, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark auburn, eyes dark, abscess scars left side of neck, shows two prominent teeth when laughing; dress, dogskin jacket, dark dress, plum colour bonnet; a native of Manchester. 14— Bishop's Stortford ( County).— For stealing a live pig— FREDERICK OLIVER, age 20 or 21, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache ( slight) light, eyes dark brown, full face; dress, light tweed coat, tight- fitting cord trousers, hard felt hat; a native of Harlow, Essex. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hilton, Bishop's Stortford. 15.— Ware ( County).— For deserting wife and child — CHARLES BURROWS, age 26, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, promi- nent nose, thick bottom lip. A native of Welwyn ; is known at Whittlesea. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Arrowsmith, Ware. £ 2 REWARD. 16.— Ware ( Reformatory).— Absconded from Herts Reformatory School, 23rd ult.— WILLIAM PETERS, age 15, height 5 ft., complexion rather dark, hair dark, eyes blue, walks very lame, large open sore bend of left knee, lately resided at Hitcliin- road, Luton.— PHILIP TONAR, age 15, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion freckled, hair brown, eyes hazel; dress, black jacket and vest, cord trousers, blue striped shirt, worsted socks marked No. 366 and 368 respectively. Lately resided at Gillingham, Kent. Information to Supt. Fish, the Reformatory, by whom the above reward will be paid for their appre- hension. LANCASHIRE. 17.— Bolton ( County).— For stealing, 13th inst., at Farnworth, a small silver Genera watch, engine- turned case, white dial, one hand supposed steel one gold, seconds ditto, maker " Grundy," nickel silver guard, common pattern, with 2 watch keys and a small foreign coin attached— A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., moustache ( heavy) black, hair ( parted in centre and cut short in front) dark, round features ; dress, black pilot overcoat, white moleskin trousers, side- spring boots, black hard felt hat. Information to Supt. Holland, Bolton. 18.— Kirkham ( County).— For failing to report- Supervisee EDWARD LEONARD, Office No. 26318 age 28, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, hair dark FRIDAY, MARCH 20, 1885. Sentenced at Preston on the 3rd January, 1877, to 7 years' penal servitude and 7 years' police supervision for felony. Liberated 17th November, 1884. D 203. Information to Supt. Stafford, Kirkham, Lancashire. 19.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report- License Holder JOSEPH HIGGINS, alias DEIG- HAM, and JOHN JOSEPH DEEGAN, Office No. 26505, age 22, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, blue dot between right thumb and forefinger, anchor between left thumb and fore- finger, cross right arm, star, anchor, and blue mark left arm. Sentenced at Liverpool the 13th December, 1880, to 5 years' penal servitude for larceny. Licensed the 5th December, 1884. W G 1063. — Supervisee ROBERT PRICE, Office No. 23128, age 27, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes blue, squints left eye, ( JJ) . J left arm, anchor and rope and part of bracelet on right, dot between thumb and forefinger. Sentenced at Liverpool the 3rd No- vember, 1879, to 5 years' penal servitude and 7 years' police supervision for larceny. Licensed the 30th October, 1883. F 981. A dangerous shopbreaker; effects entrance by roof or skylight. Information to the Chief Superintendent, Detective Department, Liverpool. 20.— Barrow- in- Furness ( Borough).— For failing to report— Supervisee ELLEN McCARTHY, age 31, height 5 ft 1 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes hazel, proportionate build, mole left cheek and right side neck, scar left eyebrow. Sentenced at Lancaster the 2nd July, 1883, to 12 calendar months' hard labour and 5 years' police supervision for larceny. Information to the Chief Constable, Barrow- in- Furness . 21.— Salford ( Borough).— Tor attempted murder— PATRICK orPARKEY GRANT, age about 20, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair light, moustache slight; dress, black ribbed cloth coat and vest, black cord trousers, white muffler, billycock hat.— WILLIAM MURPHY, age 20, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion dark, tender eyes, squints, full round face, turned up nose ; dress, dark cutaway coat and vest, light cord trousers, hard billycok or slogger cap. 22.— Salford ( Borough).— For failing to report— License Holder JOHN BAMFORD, Office No. 26848, age 37, height 5 ft. 3 in, complexion fair, hair fair, eyes hazel, lost all front teeth but one, moles on cheeks, right elbow contracted, anchor left arm, lost 3rd and 4th left fingers. Sentenced at Manchester on the 9th April, 1877, to 10 years' penal servitude and 7 years' police supervision for larceny. Licensed 3rd January, 1885. Y D 439.— Supervisees JAMES SMITH, Office No. 22994, age 61, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes grey, pockmarked, scars on eye- brows, bridge of nose, lost 3 top teeth and 2 bottom, scars on wrist, elbows fractured, fingers fractured. Sentenced at Salford on the 22nd October, 1877, to 7 years' penal servitude and 7 years' police supervision for fraud. Licensed 11th October, 1883. V D 272 — MARY ANN REILLY, Office No. 25608, age 29, height 4 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, " J. H. A. Milton" on right arm, " John Hamilton, M. H." on left. Sentenced at Salford on the 20th October, 1879, to 5 years' penal servitude and 7 years' police supervision for larceny. Licensed 8th August, 1884. F 117.— SUSAN BARLOW, alias SARAH, Office No. 22165, age 56, height 4 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes blue, large scar left side head and'face ( burns), scar on forehead, fingers both hands fractured at first joints. Sentenced at Salford on the 8th January, 1883, to 6 months' hard labour and 2 years' police supervision. 9582. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Salford. caped from custody 27th ult., at Lincoln, age about 28, height % ft. 6j in., complexion swarthy, hair, moustache, and eyes brown, dimple in chin, tattooed second finger left hand, several small scars on chin; dress, short brown or grey coat, grey mixture plaid vest, bound brown braid, old grey tweed trou* ers, white calico shirt, black- and- white scarf, low shoes, black hard felt hat. A well- known thief. Wa* committed for trial at Louth, 27th ult., for stealing a ham. Frequents low beerhouses and lodging- houses; makes wire puzzles, and sells them at markets. May attempt to go abroad in a steamship as stoker or coal trimmer. Has been in the Lincoln Militia. Information to Head Constable Lloyd, Louth. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. * 24.— Peterborough ( Liberty of/— For stealing, 10th inst., £ 3 10s. gold, £ 4 10s. silver, and a pair of black tweed trousers, lined white calico, fly fronts ( worn) — ALFRED FISHER, alias JERRY at. d POTTER, age 20 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair ( inclined to curl on top) dark brown, moustache ( slight) dark, proportionate build, long visage, two front teeth in upper jaw broken and decayed ; dress, brown mixture overcoat, dark brown worsted jacket, pockets at sides ; blue serge trousers and vest, lace boots ( one with hole at back), black hard felt hat, with large brim. A costermonger ; native of Cambridge, lately resided at Garton End, Peterborough. Attends markets, selling earthenware, oranges, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Blackman, Liberty Police Station, Peterborough. NORTHUMBERLAND. 25.— Morpeth ( County).— For assault and robbery, 10th ult.— ROBERT FERGUSON, alias BUBBLY BOB, age about 30, height 5 ft 8^ in., hair dark brown, moustache and eyes ( sunken) dark, thick broad nose, large mouth, thick lips, coarse features, " M. Peel— R. Ferguson, 1873," tattooed on arm, large scar on throat and forehead, several ditto on head, left leg, and right thumb, is much addicted to drink. A pitman ; is well known in Northumberland and Durham. Mother resides at Southwick, near Sunderland. May seek employment at collieries. Warrant issued. Information te Supt. Young, Morpeth. RADNORSHIRE. 26.— Penybont ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences at Llantephan, 3rd inst.— TWO MEN, 1st, age 50 to 60, height 5 ft. 9 in., hair grey ; dress, black or blue coat, cord trousers, peak cap ( all old); 2nd, age 30 to 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., hair light, moustache sandy ; dress, brown mixture coat, round black felt hat. State they are father and son, and expose wounds on arms and legs, caused from injuries received in a colliery explosion in South Wales. Are accompanied by a short woman. All addicted to drink. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Wheeldon, Penybont. STAFFORDSHIRE. 30— Longton ( County).— For shopbreaking, 18th ult.— WILLIAM BROWN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair light, clean shaved ; dress, blue pilot jacket, dark worsted cord trousers and vest, blucher boots, cloth cap - HERBERT MYATT, age about 40, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers, and moustache daik, full face, Roman nose, first finger right hand deficient; dress, dark cloth coat, light cloth trousers and vest, clogs. Supposed native of Hanley.— JOHN ROBERTS, alius FINN, CARROLL, and SMITH, age about 35, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion pale, hair and moustache dark, eyes grey, turns his feet out when walking, has an ulcerated leg, very small foot; dress, blue pilot jacket, brown ribbed cloth trousers and vest, woman's lace boots. A notorious thief and returned convict; sup- posed native of Hanley. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Evans, Longton. 31— Stoke- on- Trent ( County).— For failing to report- Supervisee MICHAEL MOORE, Office No. 24143, age 50, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair turning grey, eyes grey, scars on head and right elbow, lost top teeth, left little finger nail deformed.
