SPECIAL NOTICE. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A recent case has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the despatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be re- funded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests, that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is un- willing to incur any expense, with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communi- cation sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for the adoption of such a course will be apparent from the fact that the POLICE GAZETTE is circulated in the Colonies. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 105.— The attention of Police is directed to the pro- ceedings of TWO MEN, who forward to householders, by post, patterns of damasks, cambrics, linens, & c., with circulars, in which they represent themselves as agents for Messrs. McGregor, Ferguson and Co., St. Andrew's- square, Paisley, Douglas and McKenzie, St. George's- square, Glasgow, Gordon, Paterson and Co., George- street, Edinburgh, Stewart and McRae, Bu- chanan- street, Glasgow, and state that they have very large stocks to dispose of at low prices, in consequence of the depressed state of trade, dissolution of partner- ship, ifcc., and that they will call in a few days with the goods. When they call they have usually none of the goods of which patterns were sent, and endeavour to sell a quantity of worthless articles. One of the men usually enters the house selected, while the other remains outside with a pack, which they carry on foot. Description, 1st, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., com- plexion and hair dark, clean shaved ; dress, light over- coat, dark trousers, patent leather side- spring boots, black felt hat, carries a black stick with silver top ; 2nd, age 25, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair red, moustache light; dress, dark overcoat and trousers, side- spring boots, black felt hat, appearance of travellers. As no such firms as the above- named can be found, there is good reason to believe that the object of the circular is to obtain admittance to houses for the purpose of selling goods of very inferior quality. 106.— The attention of Police is called to the opera- tions of JESSE WILBY, of 130, Great Dover- street, London, S. E. He advertises in the daily and other newspapers under his own name, and that of JULIA FISHER, requesting persons possessed of a sewing machine to communicate with him, enclosing stamped envelope. On receipt of the envelope lie writes to the person sending it, stating that for the sum of Is. Id. he will supply a pamphlet, describing how £ 55 a year was earned by means of a sewing machine; but although the money is generally sent, the pamphlet is never forthcoming. This man also resorts to a form of swindling under the name of " The Novelty Publishing Co." He sends out lists of publications with obscene titles, which he intimates are of a very extraordinary character, and for which he charges high prices. Any customer who is deluded into sending him money receives a pam- phlet of little value, and free from such obscenity as would justify legal proceedings being taken against the vendor. In Enoch's very short history, it is twice recorded that he " walked with God." His name signifies " dedicated, disciplined, well- regulated"— a good defi- nition of a Policeman ! He was called, as we are, to walk with God, to find holiness and reprove sin in a dark and evil world. Was it easier so to do in his days? Had he fewer difficulties and trials? Satan may have improved upon the system, but in the main we find it was the same. He lived in a world fashioned by Cain— a world of cities, civilisation, agriculture, manufactures, arts, and a religion— Cain's religion— an offering denying the shedding of blood, and an earth rejecting God, but bringing forth all that could make it more bearable for men. In this world Enoch was not ashamed to be peculiar— odd. He repeated what God told him in this " walk " con- cerning the ungodliness around, and concerning the Second Coming of Christ.- Jude xiv. 15. A minority of one was easily disposed of ; for they heeded not with Whom he walked. One day the Antediluvians were startled by his absence. No doubt they sought him; but he " was not." God Himself had come for him. Does this sound an idle tale ? or is it not rather a weighty truth helping us to realise in anticipation 1 — Luke xviii. 34- 36. Enoch foreshadowed Christ, " alone, yet not alone, for the Father was with Him," and having honoured God, God honours him, and this day, by the same testimony accorded to His Son— that with him He is " well pleased."— Heb. xi. 5. Pleasing God, Enoch did not please man, for what man highly esteems, God abominates, and what is to God His Central Fact— the Atonement— man tramples on. When men are well pleased with Christ, God and man agree. ENAMELLED IRON CABMEN'S BADGES; CAB NUMBERS, CAB FARE PLATES. NUMBERS FOR DOOR, & o. 0 " POLICE STATION" PLATES.
