SPECIAL NOTICE. FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A recent case has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the despatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be re- funded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests, that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is un- willing to incur any expense, with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communi- cation sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for the adoption of such a course will be apparent from the fact that the POLICE GAZETTE is circulated in the Colonies. " The Watchmen that go about the city '"— they are frequently mentioned in Scripture. Can you each one say. " I will stand upon my watch, and will watch to see what He will say unto me" ? While faithfully performing the duties to which you have bound your- selves, are you seeking to serve Him who asks for, and has a right to claim, our service 1 You have to guard the property and treasures of others, but you have each a treasure of your own, more valuable than any earthly possession ; for " what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul 1" Is your soul intrusted to His care who is able to keep that which is committed to Him 1 But before we can serve in any profession, we must have been accepted for the service. If a man wishes to be a policeman, it would be no use for him to put on a uniform of his own making and start off on his own account to duty ; he would have no authority, and could be of no use ; he would not be acknowledged at head quarters, though the public might be deceived, and imagine him to be a real policeman. Nothing is accepted by God as service until the preliminaries have been settled between our own souls and Himself. " All have sinned." " The Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all." " Be reconciled to God"; so that, " accepted in the Beloved," we may " serve God acceptably." DR. J. OOLLIS BROWNE'S i CHLORODYNE. CALEDONIAN HOTEL, ADELPHI TERRACE, STRAND, LONDON, W. C.
