All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be addressed to THE EDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, GEEAT SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S." W. • 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4 In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the pay- ment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature 6f an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Insveetor, or analogous thereto. A T I O N S. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and ar- alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particidars concerning delinquents, or stolen property to be inserted in the. POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in t- henext issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will le wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. - J 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should beforwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Great Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond § Co.," lust Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. SPECIAL NOTICE. JAMES MONRO, Esq., having been appointed Assistant Commissioner of Police for the Criminal Investigation De- partment of the Metropolitan Police, it is requested that in future all letters relating to Criminal matters be addressed to him. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. The Editor desires to call attention to the fact that all photographs of prisoners in custody, trans- mitted to the Convict Branch of the Metropoli- tan Police Office, for purposes of identification, are seen by the police or warders who visit all prisoners under remand, in the Metropolitan Police District three times a week. This system, esta- blished in 1879, has been the means of ascertaining the previous convictions of 7000 prisoners, and affords great facilities to Chief Officers of Police, and the Governors of Her Majesty's Prisons. Such photographs are also compared with the albums in the Convict Office con- taining the portraits of all Convicts liberated in the Kingdom, which are further open to the personal examination of any police officer or warder. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1,— Central.— Woodcut engraving of the hand- writing of a man known as J. E. PAYNE and other aliases, whose apprehension is sought for fraud. He advertises in provincial newspapers, stating that he has a bicycle for sale for £ 10, and that its original cost was £ 26; gives full particulars of its make, ( fee., and usually obtains in payment a banker's draft on a county bank, payable in London 21 days after date ; negotiates the same, but does not forward the bicycle. It is requested that the fac- simile of the hand- writing be shown to the proprietors of newspapers, and if any information be obtained likely to lead to his arrest, that particulars of the same be forwarded at once by telegram to Chief Supt. Williamson, Metro- politan Police Office, Great Scotland Yard, S. W. Warrant issued. VM - V- - V ia V — V * £ 50 REWARD. 2.— Central.— Woodcut portrait and description of EDWARD WARD, a lieutenant of the Army Hospital Corps, who arrived in London from Singa- pore via Colombo and Plymouth in s. s. Thames in October, 1882, whose apprehension is sought for em- bezzlement— Age 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., eyes grey, straight nose, hair ( curly), moustache, and whiskers light brown; gentlemanly appearance and of good address ; walks erect ; a native of Canterbury. Friends reside at Cheltenham. The above reward will be paid by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department, to any person ( other than a police officer of the United Kingdom) who shall give such informa- tion as shall lead to his arrest. W. 3,— Central.— For embezzlement, at Barmen, Germany— WILHELM DEH, an errand boy, age 20, tall and slender, small, round face, long thin legs, large feet; dress, brown suit ( new), or black and white check ditto, swings his arms when walking, and has a down- cast look. 2 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. TUESDAY, JULY 15, 1884. 4.— Central— Absconded 4th inst., stealing about £ 50— THOMAS GORMAN, prison warder, age 42, height 5 ft. 11 in., medium build, complexion fair, face flushed, hair ( cut short) turning grey, moustache ( slight) light; dress, dark pilot jacket, trousers, and vest, or light summer suit; speaks with an Irish accent; has been in the army, and was employed as assistant warder in Lancaster Prison. May endeavour to go to America. .5.— C. Division.— For embezzlement— GEORGE ALBANY ROGERS, a clerk, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion pale, hair and eyes dark brown; dress, black suit, brown hard felt hat. Warrant issued. £ 20 REWARD. 6— C Division— For embezzling £ 13 19s. 2d., the moneys of the Guardians of the Poor, St. George's, Hanover- square, Middlesex— HENRY WILLIAM ATTNEAVE, age 40 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 5j in., complexion, hair, side whiskers, and moustache ( turn- ing grey) dark, eyes hazel, wears spectacles; dress, dark clothes, high hat, respectable appearance. His wife resides at 41, Agard- street, Derby, and friends at Eaton Villa, 233, Humberstone- road, Leicester. A native of Hoxton, Middlesex. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by William J. Fraser, Esq., 2, Soho- square, London, for his apprehension. 7.— G Division.— Woodcut portrait and descrip- tion of B. J. BARKER ( see Case No. 4, 20th ult.), whose apprehension is sought for embezzlement, age 33, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair and mous- tache light brown; dress, dark reefing coat, plaid trousers, black hard felt hat. A native of Holland, and may endeavour to leave the country. 8.— R Division.— JOHN PERRY, Case No. 5, 18th inst., not to be apprehended. 9.— T. Division.— For embezzlement— THOMAS LEVETT, age 32, short, complexion florid, hair ( curly) black, eyes blue, anchor, serpent, and T. L. in blue ink on left forearm, ring on third finger right hand, small stars on back of left hand ; dress, snuff- colour jacket, cord trousers, white straw hat, trimmed black band with three red stripes. 10.— W Division, — Woodcut portrait and de- scription of WILLIAM MORRIS, whose apprehension is sought for stealing £ 32 gold and silver, 20th ult., age 55, height 5 ft. 7f in., complexion and hair dark, eyes grey; dress, light tweed coat and vest, dark speckled trousers, white shirt, turn- down collar, black silk scarf, black hard felt hat. A native of St. Saviour's, Southwark, Surrey. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, 4, Whitehall- place, London, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. £ 50 REWARD. 11.— For fraudulent bankruptcy— JAMES CHAPMAN, age 38, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair, whiskers, and moustache, light brown. A solicitor, has resided at The Homestead, Shooter's Hill, Kent, and Clacton- on- Sea, Essex. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Messrs. Munns and Longden, solicitors, 8, Old Jewry, London, E. C., for his apprehension. Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective De- partment, Old Jewry, London. BERKSHIRE. £ 2 2s. REWARD. 12.— Windsor ( Borough).— For obtaining by false pretences, on 11th ult., a gold, open- face, English lever watch, No. 4583, " C W. Seymour, 27, High- street, Windsor," engraved on top plate— HENRY MARTIN SATCHELL, slight, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., melancholy features, large sleepy grey eyes, face blotched, stoops slightly, hair brown, moustache slight. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. W. S. Cantrell, Fernlea, Windsor, for such information as shall lead to his apprehension and conviction. Information to Supt. Hayes, Windsor. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. f 13.— Beaconsfield { County). — For stealing a brown horse pony, 12 hands, 8 years old, black legs, thick mane, long tail— TWO MEN, 1st, age 34, height 6 ft., stout, complexion fresh, full face, clean shaved ; dress, dark suit, black hat; 2nd, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion and moustache dark ; dress, dark jacket, tight cord trousers, hard felt hat. Had with them a cream- coloured cob, and spring cart, with a grey pony behind. Information to Supt. Dunham, Slough. 14.— Chesham ( County).— For stealing from a field at Amersham, 13th inst., a brown nag mare, 14 hands, 6 years old, broken knees, 4 black legs— TWO MEN, 1st,- age 35, height 5 ft. 9 in., slender build ; dress, light plaid suit, black hard felt hat; 2nd, age 25, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout; dress, grey suit, black hard felt hat. Had in their possession a small brown pony and costermonger's barrow, with canvas cover. Were last seen between 10 and 11 p. m. 13th inst. passing Chorleywood in the direction of Watford, accompanied by a woman and one or two children. Information to Inspector Webb, Chesham. 15.— Slough { County).— For stealing £ 11 from a gipsy's van— CHARLEY —, age 19, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fail-, hair light, boyish appearance; dress, light coat, cord trousers, new shoes, hard felt hat. A native of Forest Road, East Grinstead ; friends reside at Stratford, Essex Information to Supt. Dunham, Slough. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 16.— Newmarket { County).— For embezzlement— HENRY WOOD, age 26, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion, hair ( curly), moustache, and whiskers ( slight), and eyes dark, shows his teeth when laughing, walks badly; dress, dark mixture coat or jacket, light trousers and vest, lace boots ( new), black hard felt hat. Father resides at Witham, Essex, and a brother at Enfield. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Long, Newmarket. 17.— Cambridge { Borough).— For stealing a cash box containing some books and about £ 3— A MAN, age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., medium build, com- plexion very fair, hair and moustache ( slight) light; dress, black diagonal coat and vest, dark cloth trousers, low felt hat, wore a ring on each hand, and talked of horse- racing. This man left Cambridge for King's Cross Railway- station by the 8.30 a. m. train, and returned the box same day, giving the name of sender as Kirby, Brixton- road, London. Information to Chief Constable Turrell, Cambridge. CHESHIRE. 18.— Stockport [ Borough).— For stealing a number of paint brushes ( recovered)— HARRY NELSON, alias M'CARTHY and STEEL, a painter, age 29 height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., medium build, complexion pale hair ( cut short), light brown, moustache slight; dress, short yellow tweed jacket, tight mixture tweed trou- sers, white muffler, lace boots, hard felt hat; stated he was a native of Rochdale, and friends resided near Oldham, Lancashire. Supposed wanted for deserting family and assaulting police. Was last seen accom- panied by PATRICK KELLY, a painter, age 23, short, hair brown, moustache dark; dress, white slop and muffler, brown trousers, black hard felt hat; and MARIA GORDON, age 19, medium build, complexion ruddy, hair brown ; dress, peach velvet bodice, dark winsey skirt, sidespring boots. Information to Chief Constable Staples, Stockport. DERBYSHIRE. 19.— Derby { County).— For housebreaking at Mickleover, 18th ult., and stealing £ 3 17s. 2d. and one pair lace boots ( size 8)— JOHN BUCKLEY age 18, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 m., complexion fresh, hair brown lump ( as large as a hen's egg) on right elbow, dress ( supposed) dark blue ribbed cloth coat and vest " Rochdale Clothing Co." on tab, brown mixture trousers, and stolen boots ; a native of Staffordshire Information to Deputy Chief Constable Lawson Derby. » EDINBURGHSHIRE. 20.— Edinburgh ( City).- For stealing £ 38, con- sisting of seven £ 5 Bank of England notes, and three £ 1 notes ( supposed Royal Bank of Scotland), a circular letter of credit dated at New York between lst and 4th June, 1884, issued by Brown, Shipley, and Company, New York, on Brown, Shipley,' and Company, London, for £ 300, of which sum £ 120 has been drawn, one payment being at Liverpool for £ 20, and the remainder at Brown, Shipley, and Company's' London— TWO MEN— lst, age 26 to 30, height 5 ft! 8 in., stout, complexion swarthy, face blotched, hair dark, moustache slight; dress, dark coat and trousers round hard felt hat with broad brim, carried an um- brella. Stated he was an American, but spoke with an English accent— 2nd, age about 30, height 5 fc. 9 or 10 in., medium build, long features, dissipated appearance, hair, tuft on chin, and moustache brown ; dress, dark coat, fine black West of England tweed trousers with white stripe, checked shirt, stand up collar to match, fastened with a diamond collar stud ; carried a dark corded summer overcoat, and wore a massive gold albert chain, composed of solid bars about 1 in. long, alternated with small links, and large stone seal attached. It is requested that immediate notice be given to banks with a view to prevent payment of circular letter. Information to the Chief Constable, City Chambers Edinburgh. ESSEX. 21.— Chelmsford.— Escaped from Chelmsford Prison, 2nd inst., whilst undergoing 18 months' impri- sonment— JOHN HAMMOND, age 20, complexion freckled, hair light, eyes grey, full face; formerly re- sided at Rochford, Essex. Information to the Governor H. M. Prison, Chelms- ford. — Colchester ( County).— For stealing 20 five- pound notes on Messrs. Alexander and Co.' s Bank, Ipswich, 24th ult.— SANDER JAN VAN MILL, age about 32, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion, hair, and eyes dark, Jewish appearance, and speaks with a foreign accent; dress, brown overcoat, dark trousers, hard felt hat; a native of Amsterdam, Holland. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Daunt, Colchester. 23.— Colchester { Borough).— For stealing 4 Waltham silver lever watches, 7th inst., Nos. 2399398, 2332949, 2399330, 2399321, open faces, crystal glasses, white dials, engine- turned cases ; and 1 lady's silver Geneva, No. 34250, crystal glass, engraved case— JOHN HENRY SERGEANT, age 18 or 19, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes full, right hand deformed from the effects of a burn, wears a leather band or support round wrist, and writes with left hand ; dress, light tweed suit, black and white straw hat, with black and yellow band. GLAMORGANSHIRE, 24. — Pontypridd { County). — Absconded from Porth, 4th inst., charged on a warrant with stealing 1 silver open face English lever watch. No. 42910; 1 old open face verge, No. 160; 1 silver patent lever, No. 12325; 1 ditto open face railway compensation balance, No. 2469; 1 ditto English lever, No. 39142; 1 ditto ditto compensation balance, No. 21899 ; 1 ditto Waltham, No. 2115912; 1 single case Geneva, No. 230123 ; 1 ditto ditto, No. 4664 ; 1 double case ditto No. 1798; 1 old verge open face, No. 4218 or 8301— RICHARD WEISER, age 24, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fair, whiskers and moustache ( slight) light, small grey eyes. A watchmaker, native of Germany ; friends reside in Porth and Cardiff. Information to Supt. Matthews, Pontypridd GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 25— Cheltenham { County).— For stealing a gold open- face lever watch ( much worn), bow and stud broken off, a pair of cord breeches ( a hole about 1i inches long inside one leg), a pair of gaiters, large at bottom, and trimmed small pearl buttons— JOSEPH SMITH alias STARCH COLLAR JOE, age about 28, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight, complexion very fair, hair light, eyes ( large and staring; grey, large feet, and walks with awkward gait; dress, dark brown cloth coat and vest, cord breeches and gaiters, spotted neck- tie, stand- up collar, hard felt hat. Is well known at Cardiff, Newjwrt, Monmouth, Swansea, Swindon, a » d Bristol, where he was last seen. A groom, and may seek employment at livery stables and repositories. Information to Supt. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 5 HAMPSHIRE. £ 10 REWARD. 26— Newport, Isle of Wight ( Borough).— For stealing, 8th May last, a cheque for £ 26 8s. 6d., pay- able to Messrs. Mew, Langton, and Co., 3 £ 5 Bank of England Notes, one No. oillflfl) dated 24th Septem- ber, 1883, and about £ 25 gold and silver— a MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, hair and whiskers dark ; dress, dark clothes. The above reward will be paid by Messrs. Mew, Langton, and Co., Brewers, Newport, Isle of Wight, for the apprehension and conviction of the man and the recovery of the property. Information to Supt. Blackwell, Newport, Isle of Wight. 27.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing 1 silver watch, castle on dial, 1 silver chain ( old), 1 fancy gold ring set with blue stones, 1 ditto ditto set red and pearls, 1 lady's diamond ditto, 1 silver necklace, locket, earrings, and brooch ( Lizzie), 1 ditto brooch with hair, 1 pair jet bracelets, 1 black dress, trimmed brocaded satin and lace, 1 black dolman with lace and bead trimming— CHARLOTTE COX, alias HESTER, SOUTHBIBY, COCKRAN, and BAKER, age about 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, large scar on back of head, scar on nose ; is of loose habits, and has been previously con- victed. 28— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing £ 33, 13th inst.— FREDERICK PETERS, age about 31; height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top of head) brown, eyes grey ; dress, dark brown speckled tweed coat trousers and vest. Has been a gunner in the Royal Marines, from which corps he is a deserter. £ 25 REWARD. 29.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For forgery and fraud, 19th April last— GEORGE ALSTEENS, age about 50, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, moustache ( small) sandy, eyes grey; dress, dark overcoat, brown suit under, black or brown felt hat ( worn low on forehead), slovenly appearance, and carries his hands in his pockets. A Frenchman or Belgian, speaks broken English with French accent, and gesticulates freely; may endeavour to go to France or Belgium. The above reward will be paid by John Moberly> Esq., Solicitor, Portsea, for his apprehension. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Cosser, Portsmouth. HEREFORDSHIRE. 30.— Hereford ( City).— For stealing a pair of boots ( recovered)— SAMUEL BILLINGHAM, age 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown; respectable appearance; dress, dark coat, trousers and vest, blue, striped shirt, brown cap with peak. Information to Chief Constable Richardson, Here- ford ___ LANCASHIRE. 31.— Ashton- under- Lyne ( County).— For em- bezzlement— JAMES JONES, age 37, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair black, side whiskers and moustache slight, eyes brown, right eye recovered from inflammation, wears green spectacles, slightly lame; dress, brown suit, black hard felt hat, wore a silver hoop on left little finger, and a twisted silver watch- guard, with gold pendant ( shape of a gun car- riage) attached. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Barnett, Ashton under- Lyne. 32.— Kirkham ( County).— For failing to report- License Holder HENRY CARTER, Offiie No. 23709, age 41, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion sallow, hair light brown, eyes hazel, scars back of head, birthmark over left shoulder, small mole on left arm. Sentenced at Preston the 5th April, 1876, to 10 years' penal servi- tude and 7 years' police supervision for felony. Licensed 3rd January, 1884. C. 607. Information to Supt. Stafford, Kirkham. £ 5 REWARD. 33.— Old Trafford ( County).— Escaped from cus- tody, charged with stealing a watch at Belle Vue, Gorton ( see Case No. 70, 13th ult.)— FRANKLIN WILLARD, age 22, height 5 ft. 7 in., medium build, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, sailor and boot tattooed inside right arm, boot outside left; dress ( when last seen), blue striped cloth coat and vest, snuff- colour trousers, side- spring boots. May be in custody for some other offence. Information to Supt. Bent, Old Trafford, by whom the above reward will be paid for his apprehension. 34.— Prescot ( County).— For obtaining a horse by false pretences at Huyton, on 13th ult.— THOMAS CROXTON, alias " LITTLE TOMMY," age about 45, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair, moustache and tuft on chin dark ; dress, dark cloth coat and vest, dark, grey trousers, black felt hat with broad brim. A horse dealer, and attends principal fairs in England; a native of Birmingham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Barker, Prescot. £ 5 REWARD. 35.— Liverpool ( City). — Escaped from Liver- pool Prison, 19th inst., while undergoing imprisonment for housebreaking— JAMES MAHONEY, age 20, height 5 ft. 6} in., complexion fresh, hair ( curly) brown, eyes brown, oval features, clean shaved, small scar on right forehead ; dress, prison trousers and shirt ( paint stained). A painter; has a knowledge of the East- end of London. Information to The Governor H. M. Prison, Liver- pool, by whom the above reward will be paid for his apprehension. 36.— Liverpool ( City).— For obtaining £ 25 by false pretences on 10th inst.— A.
