TO THE OFFICERS AND CONSTABLES OF THE COUNTY, CITY, AND BOROUGH POLICE FORCES OF GREAT BRITAIN. My resignation of the office of Director of Criminal Investigations takes effect to- morrow, June 14th, and I desire to avail myself of this opportunity to express to the Officers and Constables of County, City, and Borough Police Forces my deep appreciation of the assistance they have invariably afforded me since my appoint- ment in March, 1878. Many hundreds of prisoners have been arrested and inquiries made on criminal matters in the several Police Districts of Great Britain, on behalf of the Metropolitan Police, and in this District at the instance of Constabu- lary Forces. In leaving the Police Service, which I do with much regret, I may ven- ture to express a hope, that the same courteous intercommunication and har- monious action which I have met with, may long continue, to the certain advan- tage of the public. C. E. HOWARD VINCENT. Great Scotland Yard, London, June 13th, 1834. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. AYRSHIRE. The Editor desires to call attention to the fact that all photographs of prisoners in custody, transmitted to the Director of Criminal Investigations, for purposes of identification are seen by the police or warders who visit all prisoners under remand, in the Metropolitan Police District three times a week. This system, esta- blished in 1879, has been the means of ascertaining the previous convictions of 7000 prisoners, and affords great facilities to Chief Officers of Police, and the Governors of Her Majesty's Prisons. Such photographs are also compared with the albums in the Convict Office con- taining the portraits of all Convicts liberated in the Kingdom, which are further open to the personal examination of any police officer or warder. IDENTIFICATION OF BODIES. UNCLAIMED The attention of the Editor has been directed to the want of any system existing for the publication of descriptions of dead bodies coming into the hands of Police, and which are buried without having been iden- tified. It having been suggested that the particulars should be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, the Editor will be glad to print any information which it may be considered desirable to publish.
