All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, anil all communications upon them should, be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. J. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, ani the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of L stolen property, will be prominently inserted, ivith detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. i) d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analagous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents, or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not latei• than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Great Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond $ Co.," Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements arc accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted as advertisements. C. E. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in my circular of the 7tli of Nov. last. 3.— It is particularly requested that any complaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. IMPORTANT NOTICE. The Editor lias received with satisfaction numerous letters from Chief Officers of Police expressing approval of the New- Series of the Police Gazette, and notifying instances of useful information obtained solely thereby, and formerly sought in vain. He will be exceedingly glad to be favoured with any suggestions for its further improvement. He takes the opportunity of stating that the Tuesday edition is transmitted to the Head Quarters of Regiments and to Her Majesty's ships, and is forwarded with the Friday issue to all the Police Stations in the United Kingdom indicated by Chief Officers of Police. No objection will be made to the extension of this list even to single constables or detached posts, and no. charge whatever will be made. The object of the Editor is to ensure the contents of the POLICE GAZETTE being brought home to every Police Officer in the country, and to this end he seeks to enlist the hearty co- operation of all ranks. The POLICE GAZETTE is also transmitted to Her Majesty's Convict Establishments and Local Prisons, the warders whereof thus being enabled to recognise portraits or descriptions of persons in custody and to prove their former convictions. It is also sent to the principal stations in Ireland, and the Channel Islands, India, and the Colonies. The Editor will be happy to receive for notification in the POLICE GAZETTE, information concerning vacancies in the Superior Ranks of Constabulary Forces, and also of appoint- ments therein, as well as of any matter of general interest to the Police. SPECIAL MEMORANDUM. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. Woodcut and description of JOHN McCAFFERTY, an Irish- American, who was convicted of Fenianism in Dublin in 1867, and sentenced to penal servitude for life, age 44, height about 5 ft. 8 in., dark hair ( now cut short), dark small sunken eyes, dark eyebrows, slightly aquiline nose, sallow complexion, scowling visage, long narrow forehead, small beard and moustache, left hand tattooed* Served as a Captain in General Morgan's Confederate Cavalry, and received a gunshot wound above the right knee. This man is supposed to be now in the United Kingdom organising dynamite outrages, and it is requested that if any information be obtained respecting him, immediate communication may be made to Chief Supt. Williamson, Great Scotland Yard. 2 APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 2. T Division.— For absconding from his bail on a charge of being drunk and disorderly— THOMAS DAVIS, age 38, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, blind right eye; dress, dark corduroy suit, old and dirty, and heavy lace boots; a licensed hawker, No. 2441T. Warrant issued. Information to Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, London, S. AV. CITY OF LONDON. 3.— For obtaining goods by false pretences, THOMAS ABBOTT, age 24, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion pale, very sharp thin features, clean shaved, hair brown, eyes ( piercing) dark ; dress, light mixture overcoat with cape, black frock under, dark vest and trousers, sometimes wears a high black hat. Warrant issued. 4.— For fraud, FOTIO CON STAN TINE YAKINTHES, age about 45, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, thin features, hair ( parted in centre), beard, and moustache ( turning grey) dark; wears a high black hat with mourning band; respectable appearance; native of Greece. Is accompanied by his wife, age about 41, complexion dark, short and stout, showily dressed, and addicted to drink. Warrant issued. 5.— For defrauding Assurance Company, LIONEL BATLEY, alias LIONEL JONES, JAMES LEWIS, Expiree, Reg. No. 14560, late of 7, Albion- road, Lewisham- road, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes grey, oval face, stout build, space between two front upper teeth, lost a lower tooth left side, three small sore marks back of left hand, one back of right hand, three burn marks on left leg, dimple on chin. Kept the " Goldsmith's Arms," Bartholomew Close, a short time ago. Known to Police at Woolwich and Greenwich. Warrant issued. 6.— For embezzlement, WILLIAM LONGMORE, age 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in , complexion pale, hair, moustache, and small side whiskers black; dress, brown overcoat, black frock coat, dark vest and trousers, black felt hat. Warrant issued. 7-— Woodcut portrait and description of WILLIAM EVAN BLAKEWAY, wanted for fraud, age 43, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion ( florid) dark, hair ( bald on top of head and hair brushed over it) dark, moustache ( curled at ends) dark, small dark piercing eyes, small hands and feet; dress, dark ribbed cutaway coat and vest, dark mixture trousers, dark ribbed overcoat, and brown travelling coat, very long patent leather shoes ( new), and brown gaiters. Speaks French well, and appears affected when speaking in company. " Warrant issued. 8.— For obtaining £ 20 " by false pretences, EMMA WATSON, age 34, height 5 it. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, proportionate build ; dress, black silk skirt, long broche silk jacket, and brown felt hat, trimmed black lace and red feather. Warrant issued. £ 50 Reward. 9.— Absconded 18th ult. charged on a warrant with fraudulent bankruptcy, MAURICE ABRAHAM HYMAN, age 38, height 5ft. 8in., stout build, com- plexion pale, hair, whiskers, beard, and moustache light brown ; dress respectable. £ 50 reward will be paid by Messrs. Pritchard, Englefield & Co., Solicitors, Painters Hall, Little Trinity Lane, London, E. C., for his apprehension. Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective Department, Old Jewry, London. AYRSHIRE. 10.— Ayr { County.)— Woodcut portraits ( the one taken in 1S80, and the other in 1882) and description of DANIEL KERR or LAVERTY, alias JAMES T H E POLICE GAZETTE. TAKEN IN 1882. WILSON and CURLY DAN, wanted for house- breaking at Ardrossan on 5th inst., and stealing a tea pot, about 7A- inches high, weight 1J lbs ; a coffee pot, about 10 inches high, weight 2 lbs. 2oz.; a sugar basin, about 5 inches high, weight 1 lb.; a cream jug, 62 inches high, weight 9 J <)•/,., all silver, Queen's pattern, and have the English silver Hall mark, viz., Queen's head, lion, etc. The tea pot and coffee pot have the inscription, " Presented to John Barr, Esq., Ardrossan, 1849" thereon, and the initials " J. B." are engraved on the cream jug and sugar basin.— Also within the Burgh of Kilmarnock, on 8th inst., silver spoons and jewellery ( recovered), a brown mixture tweed jacket, a note book containing first- class passes on North British and Caledonian Railways, in name of Hugh Smillie, and a second- class pass on G. & S. W. Railway, for Company's servant ( no name); a pair of black opera glasses, yellow mountings, some Christmas cards, and sheets of note paper with engineering notes thereon.— And at Skelmorlie Mains, on 16th inst., a lady's brown sealskin jacket, lined brown satin, which is torn on the right side in front, one or two buttons at neck, hooks down front, elastic round neck, fur cuff and trimmings, two pockets inside, mark, suppos < from a burn, on one sleeve, " Arnott k Co. ( supposed) on tab; 18 silver teaspoons ( 12 beaded pattern, 6 fiddle do.), P stamped thereon; 2 or 3 old silver spoons, about £ 34 in £ 5 and £ 1 Bank notes, and about £ 3 in gold, silver, and bronze. Age 36 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 5fin., hair ( curly) brown, eyes blue, large forehead, dis- tended nostrils, thin beard, letters " M. F." on left arm; dress, black corded shooting coat, tweed trousers, black and green plaid scarf round felt hat; is a skilful housebreaker, and has been frequently convicted under the Prevention of Crimes Act. Will probably continue his depredations in districts con- venient to towns or cities in which resetters reside. He was liberated from Glasgow Prison on 2nd inst. Warrant issued. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 11.— Slough ( County).— Further particulars and amended description of JOHN LAMBERT, see POLICE GAZETTE, Case No. 12 of 25th ult.— JOHN GROOMBRIDGE, alias JOHN LAMBERT, also stolen, an olive green coat and vest, a pair of ' black ribbed cloth trousers, a brown silk umbrella, natural ash handle shape of a closed hand, and a polished gorse, silver mounted walking stick. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Dunham, Slough. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 12.— Cambridge { Borough). — For fraudulent bankruptcy, JOSEPH FOSTER, alias CHARLTON, age 60, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fresh, hair, moustache, whiskers, and beard ( bushy) grey, usually wears spectacles with gold rims, and high black' FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 29, 1884 hat, carries a stick or umbrella. An accountant. Of gentlemanly appearance. Wife resides at Lowestoft. Warrant issued. , Information to Head Constable lurrall, Cambridge. 13 Wisbech { Borough).— On a charge of fraud, WILLIAM BALD11EY, alias GEORGE PERKINS, a stone dresser, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., com- plexion fresh, moustache ( slight) and whiskers sandy, has lost some teeth in front upper jaw; dress, coloured clothes, carries a satchel across his shoulder ; accom- panied by his wife and a little boy. Warrant issued. 14,— Wisbech { Borough).— For stealing 40 feet of chain, and a hay- cutting knife ( recovered), ROBERT MORTON FISHER, a seaman, age 25, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, hair and moustache dark ; dress, old blue pilot jacket, fustian trousers ( much worn), cheese cutter cap ; of dirty appearance. A native of Boston, America. Information to Head Constable Sharpe, Wisbech. CHESHIRE. 15.— Chester ( County).— For stealing a reversible mackintosh, light dust coat, silk lining; double- breasted blue serge coat and trousers, dark grey shooting coat and vest ( old), two pairs of trousers ( 1 mixture stripe, 1 light fancy blue stripe), 1 pair racing breeches, and low soft felt hat, " Richards, Chester," inside, and a pair of lace boots, 1 scarf, 1 travelling clock, 1 pair gold sleeve links, 2 sets flat silver stiuls, sleeve links and collar studs, 1 brooch, 3 rings ( 2 gold, 1 in memory of, inscription inside, 1 with crest of Ionian Islands, 1 silver, snake pattern), some Afghan, Ionian, Indian, and Japanese coins, a Spanish gold dollar, an aluminium watch ( old), steel chain attached, a small bunch of keys, label attached, 5s. reward thereon, a pair of red and white braces, a small round purse, a pair of dogskin gloves, a pair of polo drawers and cap, and an umbrella ; some of which have been found pledged at Liverpool— HENRY BLAND, age 22, height 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion sallow, eyes grey, hair brown, cross flags surmounted with a crown on right forearm, rose, thistle, star, and " A. W." on left forearm; dress, ( property stolen), reversible mackintosh, light dust coat, silk lining, dark grey shooting coat and vest ( old), light fancy blue stripe trousers, low soft felt hat, " Richards, Chester " inside, and lace boots. A ship's steward, native of St. John's, Liverpool, and deserted from the 22nd Regiment at Chester Castle on 20th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Superintendent Oldmeadow, Chester. ESSEX. 16.— Brentwood { County).— For stealing 30th ult., by burglary at Grays:— 1 cash- box containing £ 7 gold and £ 3 silver ( box recovered), 1 masonic jewel, " Presented to John Cox, Lodge No. 12," inscribed on back, 1 plain gold mourning ring, " In memory of" in enamelled letters, plaited hair in centre, 1 black cowhide bag, black handles with two brass rings, 3 dozen plain white pocket handkerchiefs, some marked " E. and N. Newman," 6 silk handkerchiefs, blue, and black spotted borders, ( supposed) a MAN who is known as PROCTOR, age 24 or 25, height 5ft. 4 or 5in., complexion fair, hair and moustache ( small) light, eyes light blue, prominent forehead; dress, black diagonal coat and vest, blue striped trousers, side spring boots, patent fronts, black hard felt hat ( worn at back), red and blue striped scarf or wrapper, steel scarf pin. Has spoken a great deal about Wenlock Street and Edgware Road, London. Information to Supt. Dobson, Brentwood; or to Inspector Allen, Grays. 17.— Grays { County).— For obtaining by false pretences 26s., the 2nd ult., HENRY JEFFERIES, alias MERCHANT, age 55, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fair, hair and side whiskers dark, turning grey, medium build, high forehead, has a scar ( sup- posed) right side; dress high black hat, dark cloth double- breasted overcoat, short frock under coat, speckled cloth trousers, side spring shoes, carries a black bag with straps across shoulders under overcoat, and an umbrella. Makes himself thoroughly acquainted with the names of ministers and principal officials of the Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Dobson, Brentwood; or to Inspector Allen, Grays. HERTFORDSHIRE. 18.— Bishop's Stortford ( County).— For embez- zlement— ARTHUR SAMUEL CHURCH, age 36, height 5ft. 8in., complexion fair, hair and eyes ( small) brown, walks very upright, and has a full broad chest; dress, rough brown overcoat, black under do. and vest, dark mixture trousers, and lace boots; a native of Netteswell, near Harlow, Essex. Warrant issued. Information to Dep. Chief Constable Ryder, Bishop's Stortford. KENT. 19.— Mailing {" County).— For disobedience of a justice's order in bastardy arrears — WILLIAM BANFIELD, age 22, height 5 ft. 8 or 9in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey ; dress,, cord jacket and vest ( white buttons), fustian trousers-, soft TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1884. LANARKSHIRE. 20.— Glasgow ( City).— For stealing £ 200, the moneys of his employers— WILLIAM NICOLL, age 19, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair dark, full face, large mouth, prominent teeth, slightly bow- legged ; dress, brown cloth overcoat, dark grey suit under, and round felt hat; is in the habit of chewing tobacco. A native of Glasgow. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable McCall, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. • fil.— Liverpool ( City).— On suspicion of having caused the death of Richard Russell, on 18th December last, KATE WARRENER alias WOR- THINGTON or ELLERY, age about 35, height 5 ft. 4 in., stout build, fresh coloured cheeks, hair dark, eyes ( large) black, long thin nose; dress, generally black or black velvet, and tight- fitting light snuff coloured ulster, sometimes wears a black dolman, or a grey striped shawl, and black hat with red flower. A prostitute. It is requested that every possible inquiry be made, and if found to arrest and wire to Chief Supt. Williams, Detective Department, Liverpool. 22.— Manchester ( City).— For stealing, 20thinst., £ 230 in bank notes, HARRY ELLIS HART, age 19, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown ; dress, dark green coat and vest, dark mixture trousers, and black felt hat; may endeavour to emigrate. It is requested that careful search and enquiry be made at hotels, shipping offices, 8tc. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Manchester, by whom the above reward will be paid for the appre- hension of HART and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered. 23.— Bolton ( Borough).— For obtaining by false pretences, 15th ult., six iron vices, and stealing, on 8th ult., three bicycle bells, WILLIAM HENRY FAIRHTJRST, alias SMITH, a supervisee, age 19, height 5 ft. 5^ in., complexion pale, pimples on face and slightly pockpitted, hair dark brown, eyes blue ; dress, black morning coat and vest, brown tweed trousers, low shoes, black hard felt hat, blue and white necktie with figures of athletes thereon. Has been employed by a dealer in bicycles, and also in a pattern department for ironmoulders. Was convicted at Preston Sessions, 18th October, 1882, for stealing a watch, and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and 3 years police supervision. Frequents music halls. A native of West Derby, near Liverpool. Warrant issued. 24.— Bolton ( Borough).— For stealing, 9th ult., a quantitv of wearing apparel ( greater portion recovered), JOSEPH BORNESS ARMSTRONG, age 35, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion swarthy, eyes grey, hair black ; dress, black cloth jacket repaired in centre of back, black cord trousers patched at left knee and a black cloth patch on seat, red plaid neck scarf ( torn), blue pilot cloth peak cap, and clogs. Three burn marks on left arm, and blue rings, cross, anchor, square and compasses back of left hand. Native of Liverpool. Information to Chief Constable Holgate, Bolton. LINCOLNSHIRE. 25. — S p i IS by ( County). — For obtaining, 12th December last at Skegness, a quantity of poultry and eggs by false pretences, JAMES SERGEANT, age 27, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, small dark side whiskers and moustache, prominent nose, slightly bow- legged. Has been a member of the Worcestershire Constabulary, and was stationed at Dudley, and has resided in Manchester and Liverpool. In December last he resided at 97, Charles Henry- street, Birmingham, and at Sparkbrook. He usually advertises for poultry, & c., offers large prices, and pays promptly for the first two deliveries, afterwards obtains large consignments, which he sells, and decamps with the proceeds. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sowden, Spilsby. OXFORDSHIRE. 26.— Banbury ( County).— For stealing, 28th ult., 3 hemp halters, WILLIAM CLARK, age 25, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair black, slight mous- tache ; dress, dark fustian jacket and trousers, black billycock hat; a dealer in coals, which he vends in country villages ; a native of Bedworth. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wyatt, Banbury. complexion fresh, small light moustache; dress, light dust coat, black hard round felt hat. STAFFORDSHIRE!! 27.— Stoke on Trent ( County).— For stealing, 25th inst., a ring, brooch, and bracelet ( recovered) and a silver ring, set two pearls and one torquoise, ISAAC WALTERS, age 28 to 30, height about 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., 28.— Beverley ( County).— Woodcut portrait and description of HENRY ROBERT LUSCOMBE, wanted for embezzling £ 50, on the 8th inst., bankers' clerk, age 31, height 5 ft, 7 in., complexion, hair, and eyes dark, slender build, sharply defined features, aquiline nose, short sighted ( generally wears glasses), small dark side whiskers and moustache, great toe right foot deficient, which causes him to slightly turn out right foot when walking, gentlemanly appearance; dress long brown Newmarket overcoat, light cloth trousers, grey coat and vest, black felt hat, carried a black leather portmanteau. Born at Springbrook, South Africa, where a brother now resides. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable, Beverley. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 29.— Ely, Isle of ( County).— Committed for trial at Ely Quarter Sessions 9th April next for housebreaking, GEORGE ANDERSON, age 36, height 5ft. 8in., slight, complexion pale, eyes dark, hair bald top of head ( dark) turning grey, moustache and imperial dark, tattoo marks, mermaid, soldier carrying flag, and a woman right arm, Indian coat of arms left, slight scar top of head, mole left side of neck; dress, old black cloth coat, dark mixture trousers, black hard felt hat, sidespring boots ( much worn). A saddler and harness maker. States he is a native of St. Hellier's, Jersey, has served in the 11th Hussars, and worked at Gains- borough, Peterborough, Scarborough, and other towns, during the last four years. Is supposed to have been previously convicted, and only recently discharged. Information to Supt. Anker, Wisbech. DORSETSHIRE. 30.— Weymouth ( County).— Remanded until the 3rd prox., tor obtaining money by false pretences, CHARLES LAMBURN, age 34, height 5 ft. 11 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair, whiskers, and moustache ( small) dark, the lower eyelid of right eye drawn downwards, and eye very bloodshot; dress, brown suit, hard felt hat.
