Announcement eoncerninq stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analaqou* thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents, or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Great Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummonil § Co.,'' Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in my circular of the 7tli of Nov. last. 3.— It is particularly requested that any complaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. IMPORTANT NOTICE. The Editor has received with satisfaction numerous letters from Chief Officers of Police expressing approval of the New Series of the Police Gazette, and notifying instances of useful information obtained solely thereby, and formerly sought in vain. He will be exceedingly glad to be favoured with any suggestions for its further improvement. He takes the opportunity of stating that the Tuesday edition is transmitted to the Head Quarters of Regiments and to Her Majesty's ships, and is forwarded witli the Friday issue to all the Police Stations in the United Kingdom indicated by Chief Officers of Police. No objection will be made to the extension of this list even to single constables or detached posts, and no charge whatever will be made. The object of the Editor is to ensure the contents of the POLICE GAZETTE being brought home to every Police Officer in the country, and to this end he seeks to enlist the hearty co- operation of all ranks. The POLICE GAZETTE is also transmitted to Her Majesty's Convict Establishments and Local Prisons, the warders whereof thus being enabled to recognise portraits or descriptions of persons in custody and to prove their former convictions. It is also sent to the principal stations in Ireland, and the Channel Islands, India, and the Colonies. The Editor will be happy to receive for notification in the POLICE GAZETTE, information concerning vacancies in the Superior Ranks of Constabulary Forces, and also of appoint- ments therein, as well as of any matter of general interest to the Police. SPECIAL MEMORANDUM. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. Woodcut and description of JOHN McCAFEERTY, an Irish- American, who was convicted of Eenianism in Dublin in 186T, and sentenced to penal servitude for life, age 44, height about 5 ft. 8 in., dark hair ( now cut short), dark small sunken eyes, dark eyebrows, slightly aquiline nose, sallow complexion, scowling visage, long narrow forehead, small beard and moustache, left hand tattooed. Served as a Captain in General Morgan's Confederate Cavalry, and received a gunshot wound above the right knee. This man is supposed to be now in the United Kingdom organising dynamite outrages, and it is requested that if any information be obtained respecting him, immediate communication may be made to Chief Supt. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 2.— B Division.— For stealing, 16th instant, a square black leather valise, with double handles, con- taining 2 ivory hair brushes, monagram G. F. ; a black cloth morning suit, lined black silk, maker " Stevens, 4, Belgrave Mansions," supposed on trousers buttons, and a pair of patent leather shoes— a YOUTH, age 15, height 5 ft., complexion and hair dark; dress, dark jacket suit, black felt hat; respectable appearance. Can be identified. 3.— C Division.— For stealing a gold watch, albert and locket attached, HENRY HAGLEY, age 20, height 5ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion and hair ( lark ; dress, dark blue trousers pea jacket, peak cap ( all old). Has an impediment in sjDeech. Native of Soho. Warrant issued. 4.— C Division.— For stealing £ 48, FREDERICK TERRY, age 23 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion sallow, eyes light brown, hair light, blotches on face ; dress, brown chesterfield overcoat, check trousers, light hat, broad brim. Native of Camber well. Warrant issued. 5.— D Division.— For stealing, 12th ult., £ 30, gold and silver, JOHN DALEY, age 21, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion pale, eyes,' hair and moustache dark; dress, light brown dust; coat, dark striped trousers and vest, black hard felt hat, patent leather side spring boots. Was convicted at Middlesex Sessions 27th April, 1883, and sentenced to six months hard labour for larceny, in the name of JAMES DALEY. May be found at a seaport. 6.— E Division.— For stealing, 17th inst., 1 pair dark brown Scotch Cheviot trousers, strap and buckle behind, " Vertiz and Son, Manchester" on buttons; 1 black twill cloth jacket, 4 pockets outside, 3 inside; 1 plain gold pin, quoit shape; 1 cameo pin, lady's head, gold mounted ; 2 silk ties, one blue, white spots, one black ribbed: 1 paper box and some collars, marked " A. G. Copeland," a H. C. driver, age 40, stout build, red face; dress, dark overcoat, and hard felt hat. 7.— E Division, — For embezzling £ 1000, ROBERT FAYELL, age 60, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout, full face, hair grey ; dress, long light mixture over- coat, grey trousers, black hard felt hat. Formerly resided at 11, Woodsome Road, Highgate Road, and is well known at Eltham and Lee. A clerk and cashier. 8.— G Division.— For stealing, 15thinst., a brown shawl, white striped edges; 1 pair of lady's high- heeled leather button boots; 1 silver lever hunting watch, " Lion " engraved on outer case, brass bow ; 1 silver brooch, and 3 £ 5 Bank of England notes, THOMAS and ESTHER CAWBY, alias BENTON ( man and wife); 1st, age 25, height 5 ft. 9in., stoops when walking, complexion and hair dark, clean shaved, slim build, tattooed on both arms; dress, black overcoat, trousers and vest, sidespring boots, black hard felt hat; cabinet- maker ; has been a sailor.— 2nd, age 24, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion and hair fair ( fringe on forehead), medium build; dress, jacket and bonnet black. Has a child 5 months old. 9.— M Division.— For stealing, 15th inst., a silver Geneva hunting watch, flowered cases, maker, " Gardard," 15 carat gold curb albert, oval gold locket attached ; a black and brown reefing jacket, vest, and trousers; pair brown kid gloves, a MAN, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark, full facc, good- looking, carried a pen behind his ear, a^ bundle under his arm ( the straw of which he left under the bed), respectable appearance; dress, black cloth cutaway coat and vest, dark brown trousers, button boots, black felt hat. CITY OF LONDON, 10.— For stealing, 5th inst., an Oxford mixture Melton single breasted Chesterfield overcoat, both shoulders padded ( one more than the other), black Italian silk lining, two side pockets, one ticket, one inside right breast, one outside left, edges double stitched, A MAN. age 23, height 5 ft. 6 k, fair, whiskers and small moustache fair, pockpitted ; dressed in dark clcTthes and hard i'elt hat. Can be identified. 11.— For obtaining goods by false pretences GEORGE LUSCOMBE, age 45. height 5 ft. 10 in.! complexion dark, hair, full whiskers, and moustache dark ( turning grey), shaved under chin, eyes hazel, stout build; dress, brown suit, black hard felt hat. A traveller. Warrant issued. 12.— For defrauding Assurance Company, LIONEL BAILEY, alias LIONEL JONES, JAMES LEWIS, Expiree, Keg. No. H560, late if 7, Albion- road, Lewi sham road, sge 3fi, height 5 ft. 7 in . complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes prey, oval face, stout build, space between two front upper teeth, lost a lower BEDFORDSHIRE. 18.— Dunstable { Borough). — For obtaining by false pretences 31st ult. a portable harmonium in expanding case, since found pledged at Houndsditch, London, CHARLES CONWAY alias MINNEY, age 32, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, full face, hair ( turning grey) dark. Has served in the Army, has been agent to a travelling company, and has friends at New Cross. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable, Dunstable. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 19.— Newport Pagnell ( County).— For embezzle- ment, FRANCIS WOODWARD, age 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, hair and whiskers ( shaved on chin) light brown, no moustache; dress, light tweed suit ( much worn), hard black hat. Native of Beccles, Suffolk. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hall, Newport Pagnell. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 20.— Cambridge ( Borough). — For fraudulent bankruptcy, JOSEPH FOSTER, alias CHARLTON, age 60, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fresh, hair, moustache, whiskers, and beard ( bushy) grey, usually wears spectacles with gold rims, and high black hat, carries a stick or umbrella. An accountant. Of gentlemanly appearance. Wife resides at Lowestoft. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Turrall, Cambridge, 21.— Wisbech ( Borough).— On a charge of fraud, WILLIAM BALDREY, alias GEORGE PERKINS, a stone dresser, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., com- plexion fresh, moustache ( slight) and whiskers sandy, lias last some teeth in front upper jaw; dress, coloured clothes, carries a satchel across his shoulder ; accom- panied by his wife and a little boy. Warrant issued. 22.— Wisbech ( Borough).— For stealing 40 feet of chain, and a hav- cutting knife ( recovered), ROBERT MORTON FISHER, a seaman, age 25, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, hair and moustache dark ; dress, old blue pilot jacket, fustian trousers ( much worn), cheese cutter cap ; of dirty appearance. A native of Boston, America. Information to Head Constable Sharpe, Wisbech. tooth left side, three small sore marks back of left hand, one back of right hand, three burn marks on left leg, dimple on chin. Kept the " Goldsmith's Arms," Bartholomew Close, a short time ago. Known to Police at Woolwich and Greenwich. Warrant issued. 13.— For embezzlement, WILLIAM LONGMORE, age 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in , complexion pale, hair, moustache, and small side whiskers black; dress, brown overcoat, black frock coat, dark vest and trousers, black felt hat. Warrant issued. 14.— Woodcut portrait and description of WILLIAM EYAN BLAKEWAY, wanted for fraud, age 43, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion ( florid) dark, hair ( bald on top of head and hair brushed over it) dark, moustache ( curled at ends) dark, small dark piercing eyes, small hands and feet; dress, dark ribbed cutaway coat and vest, dark mixture trousers, dark ribbed overcoat, and brown travelling coat, very long patent leather shoes ( new), and brown gaiters. Speaks French well, and appears affected when speaking in company. Warrant issued. 15.-— For obtaining £ 20 by false pretences, EMMA WATSON, age 34, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, proportionate build ; dress, black silk skirt, long broche silk jacket, and brown felt hat, trimmed black lace and red feather. Warrant issued. £ 50 Reward. 16.— Absconded 18tli ult. charged on a warrant with fraudulent bankruptcy, MAURICE ABRAHAM HYMAN, age 38, height 5ft. bin., stout build, com- plexion pale, hair, whiskers, beard, and moustache light brown ; dress respectable. £ 50 reward will be paid by Messrs. Pritchard, Englefield 8c Co., Solicitors, Painters Hall, Little Trinity Lane, London, E. C., for his apprehension. Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective Department, Old Jewry, London. 1 — Ayr ( County).— Woodcut portrait and descrip- tion of DANIEL KERR or LAFFERTY, alias JAMES WILSON and CUKLY DAN, wanted for housebreaking and stealing plate and clothing, on 5th, 7th. and 16th inst., at Ayr, age 36, height 5 ft. 5J in., hairy ( curly) brown, eyes blue, large" forehead, dis- tended nostrils, thin beard; dress, black corded shooting coat, tweed trousers, black and green plaid scarf, round felt hat. Is a returned convict and a notorious housebreaker, and has been frequently con- victed under the Prevention of Crimes Act. He was liberated from Glasgow Prison on 2nd inst. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable McIIardy, Ayr. 23.— Poole ( County).— Woodcut portrait and des- cription of WILLIAM MARSHALL, charged with embezzlment age about 28, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., com- plexion fair, hair brown, eyes blue ; dress ( when he left Poole), dark ribbed coat and vest, black bowler hat. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Hunt, Poole, Dorset. 24.— Wey m O u t h ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 15 15s. and a quantity of goods bv false pretences, HARRY BROWN, alias SOLOMON, a German Jew, age about 50, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, eyes grey, whiskers ( bushy), beard and moustache ( cut rather short) grey, very near sighted; dress, black frock coat, vest, and trousers, black hat, wears a large silver watch and chain. Slovenly appearance, has a Jewish cast of countenance, and speaks with a strong foreign accent. He advertised in various papers as willing to lend money to small amounts, and as a general dealer in stationery, pictures, & c., and obtained a large quantity ot writing paper and envelopes which were made up into packets and styled " The Premier Gladstone \ Y ntmg Paper," and " The Imperial Northcote." lfeleft Weymouth on Istmst., taking a quantity of the paper with him which it is thought he will offer for sale at small shops. At his lodgings were found several luggage cards addressed " Mr. Solomon, to be left at . Norwich Thorpe till called for;" also some addressed Ipswich, Cambridge, and other stations till called for. tie is accompanied by a woman age about 28, whom he called his daughter. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Vickery, Weymouth. AYRSHIRE. DORSETSHIRE. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1884. T H E POLICE GAZETTE. 3 DUMFRIESSHIRE. 25.— Dumfries ( Borough).—- For picking pockets, JOHN STEWART, age 21, height 5 ft. £ in., eyes blue, hair and moustache light, round face; dress, single- breasted light brown overcoat, grey check tweed coat and vest, hard felt hat, necktie with blue and red spots, side spring boots. Savs he is an ostler and a native of Edinburgh.— TIMOTHY BATT, age 29, height 5 ft. 2 J, in., eyes grey, hair and whiskers ( small) black, moustache dark, full face; dress, dark grey overcoat, single- breasted black corded coat and vest, bound braid, dark check tweed trousers, round hard felt hat, black necktie, with yellow and red spots, lace boots; three anchors, " T" and eight spots on left arm below elbow, anchor and " T" back of left hand, T. B." and anchor on right arm. Says he is an artificial flower maker and native of Ireland. The names given are supposed fictitious. Stewart supposed previously convicted at Greenock for larceny in name of ARCHER. They have been travelling the country representing themselves as photographers. Information to Supt. EDINBURGH, 26.— Edinburgh ( City). — On a charge of fraudulently obtaining goods and jewellery by means of worthless cheques, JOHN COCHRANE, age about 24, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in, ordinary build, complexion fresh, hair dark, whiskers and moustache dark brown, mouth slightly twisted ( one side of chin smaller than the other); dress, dark cloth overcoat, dark tweed trousers, black round felt hat; addicted to drink and keeps low company. Left by rail for the South of England on the night of 28th ult., when he had in his possession a brown dome- shaped trunk, a port- manteau, a long ease ( supposed containing two guns), and a gold keyless denii- hunting lever watch, No. 87,878, plain cases, enamelled chapters outside front case, an open curb pattern 9 carat Albert chain weighing If ozs. May endeavour to emigrate and probably pawn the above articles. Particular enquiry is requested at seaports with a view to his appre- hension. ESSEX. 27.— Brentwood ( County).— For stealing 30th ult., by burglary at Grays:— 1 cash- box containing £ 7 gold and £ 3 silver ( box recovered), 1 masonic jewel, " Presented , to John Cox, Lodge No. 12," inscribed on back, 1 plain gold mourning ring, " In memory of" in enamelled letters, plaited hair in centre, 1 black cowhide bag, black handles with two brass rings, 3 dozen plain white pocket handkerchiefs, some marked " E. and N. Newman," 6 silk handkerchiefs, blue, and black spotted borders, ( supposed) a MAN who is known as PROCTOR, age 24 or 25, height 5ft. 4 or 5in., complexion fair, hair and moustache ( small) light, eyes light blue, prominent forehead; dress, black diagonal coat and vest, blue striped trousers, side spring boots, patent fronts, black hard felt hat ( worn at back), red and blue striped scarf or wrapper, steel scarf pin. Has spoken a great deal about Wenlock Street and Edgware Road, London. 28.— Grays ( County). — For obtaining bv false pretences 26s., the 2nd ult., HENRY JEFFERIES, alias MERCHANT, age 55, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fair, hair and side whiskers dark, turning grey, medium build, high forehead, has a scar ( sup- posed) right side; dress high black hat, dark cloth double- breasted overcoat, short frock under coat, speckled cloth trousers, side spring shoes, carries a black bag with straps across shoulders under overcoat, and an umbrella. Makes himself thoroughly acquainted with the names of ministers and principal officials of the Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Dobson, Brentwood; or to Inspector Allen, Grays. HAMPSHIRE. 29.— Kingsclere ( County).— For being concerned • with four others ( convicted at last Winchester Assizes) in committing rape and assault, on the 29th December last, at Whitchurch, WILLIAM STAGG, age about 20, height 5ft. 6in., complexion fresh, round full face, hair brown, eyes grey, slight cast in one, sup- posed right; dressed generally as a stablemen or a groom ; has been employed as boots at hotels. Native of Whitchurch.; Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Waters, Iving^ clere. 30.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing, 29tli ult, £ 38, HENRY ROBERT HEAllN, age 24, height 6 ft., complexion fair, hair ( cut short) brown, eyes hazel, small side whiskers and moustache, thin features, long chin, slight build, carries head slightly forward when walking; dress ( when last seen), small check tweed reefing coi> t, vest and trousers, long brown single breasted overcoat, with velvet collar hard black felt hat. Has been a clerk, well educated and of good address; frequents billiard rooms, is of somewhat dissipated habits and spends money freeiv. Information to Chief Constable Cosser, Landport, Portsmouth. HERTFORDSHIRE, 31.— H e rtfo rd ( Borough).— For obtaining by fraud, two brown mixture ulsters, marked 21s. and 25s., and four black cloth jackets marked 14s. lid., 19s. lid., 21s. 6d., and 21s. 6d. respectively, Miss SMITH, age between 18 and 20, height about 5 ft., complexion fair, hair dark, eyes bright, has the appearance of a respectable servant, quick spoken, with a fair amount of confidence; dress, supposed black. Inform ition to Head Constable Jarrett, Hertford. HUNTINGDONSHIRE. 32.— Ramsey ( County).— For stealing 5 fowls and a lead pump, DAVID WOOD, labourer, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion swarthy, shaggy black hair, whiskers, beard and moustache of about two months' growth, stout build, large feet; dress, fustian jacket, dark trousers and vest, dark cloth cap with peak, lace boots, all old; shakes his head when talking, and has a very rough- looking appearance. Supposed previously convicted. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Hibbins, Ramsey. 33— St Neots ( County)— Woodcut portrait and description of CHRISTIAN GOTTLIEB AUGUST HAASE, alias HAUTCII, from Coeslin, Prussia, alias JUNO D'LEONORMADA, charged with stealing a pony, cart, and harness, at St. Neot's on 25th March, 1882 ( not yet recovered), age about 40, height 5ft. 10in., complexion pale, hair ( thin), moustache, and beard light ( if not shaved), walks erect, small scar right cheek and shin bone. Suffers from epilepsy. In the habit of wearing false hair and moustache, and occasionally dresses like a woman. Visits towns and villages, hires rooms and practises '. as a phrenologist, and sometimes as a fortune teller, and gives dancing lessons. Very clever at fancy wool work, at which he is almost always employed. Has followed the occupa- tion of cook or waiter. Has been twice married, and wives supposed still living, and very likely gone through the marriage ceremony with a third woman. Has been convicted in Germany, and about three or four years ago was apprehended at King's- cross, London, for larceny committed near Bacup, Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Copping, St. Neots.
