GAZETTE. PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1884. VOL. I., No. 12. EEGXJLATIONS- 1. All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THF. POLICE GAZETTE, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, ani the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analagous thereto. POLICE 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen properly bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents, or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from- such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Great Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond # Co.," Post Office Order payable at. Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, london, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied - will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in my circular of the 7th of Nov. last. 3.— It is particularly requested that any complaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the F. ditor. IMPORTANT NOTICE. The Editor has received with satisfaction numerous letters from Chief Otficers of Police expressing approval of the New Series of the Police Gazette, and notifying instances of useful information obtained solely thereby, and formerly sought in vain. He will be exceedingly glad to be favoured with any suggestions for its further improvement. He takes the opportunity of stating that the Tuesday edition is transmitted to the Heed Quarters of Regiments and to Her Majesty's ships, and is forwarded with the Friday issue to all the Police Stations in the United Kingdom indicated by Chief Officers of Police. No objection will be made to the extension of this list even to single constables or detached posts, and no charge whatever will be made. The object of the Editor is to ensure the contents of the POLICE GAZETTE being brought home to every Police Officer in the country, aud to this end he seeks to enEst the hearty co- operation of all ranks. The POLICE GAZETTE is also transmitted to Her Majesty's Convict Establishments and Local Prisons, the warders whereof thus being enabled to recognise portraits or descriptions of persons in custody and to prove their former convictions. It is also sent to the principal stations in Ireland, and the Channel Islands, India, and the Colonies. The Editor will be happy to receive for notification in the POLICE GAZETTE, information concerning vacancies in the Superior Ranks of Constabulary Forces, and also of appoint- ments therein, as well as of any matter of general interest to the Police. SPECIAL MEMORANDUM. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. i — Woodcut and description of JOHN McCAFFERTY, an Irish- American, who was convicted of Fenianism in Dublin in 186T, and sentenced to penal servitude for life, age 44, height about 5 ft. 8 in., dark hair ( now cut short), dark small sunken eyes, dark eyebrows, slightly aquiline nose, sallow complexion, scowling visage, long narrow forehead, small beard and moustache, left hand tattooed. Served as a Captain in General Morgan's Confederate Army, and received a gunshot wound above the right knee. This man is supposed to be now in the United Kingdom organising dynamite outrages, and it is requested that if any information be obtained respecting him, im mediate communication may be made to Williamson, Chief Supt., Great Scotland Yard. 4 ^ RRR T H E POLICE GAZETTE. Warrant issued. 4-— D Division,— For stealing a clock movements and other articles, of which he was the Bailee, 15th October last, AUGUSTUS EDWARD DAVIS, alias HENRY BEAUMONT, and several other aliases, age 24, height 5 ft, 1 in., complexion sallow, hair light brown, high cheek bones, round shoulders, sly looking ; dress, light tweed mixture suit, black hard felt hat A working watchmaker. Warrant issued. 5.— K Division,— Woodcut portrait and descrip- tion of AUGUSTE LINDON, wanted for conspirin- ( with Fritz von Weisenburg, in custodv) and defraucL ing Heinrich Hutsch of £ 600, a German, age 34, height 5ft. 4in., complexion fair, hair sandy, eyes ( large) blue, head slightly inclined to the right' dress black overcoat, brown cardigan jacket, dark trousers and vest, round felt hat. A looking- glass frame maker. Has been in business as a baker at Battersea. Left London lltli ult. ( supposed for Manchester), accompanied by his wife and two children. May have gone to New York. Warrant issued. 6.— P Division.— For embezzlement, ANTHONY FREDERICK DORREK, baker, age 16, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion and hair dark, star and cross 14.— Woodcut portrait and description of WILLIAM EVAN BLAKEWAY, wanted for fraud, age 43, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion ( florid) dark, hair ( bald on top 7— S Division. For absconding from bail on a charge of felony, ELIZABETH IIALLORAN, alias STONE, age 44. height 5 ft., complexion and eyes dark, flat nose; dress, black cashmere cloak, black bonnet trimmed flowers, black crape tic, low shoes, black veil. Widow of Captain Halloran, Royal Navy. Has relatives in Devonshire, and has drawn money from a solicitor at Torquay. • 1 Warrant issued. 8.— T Division.— For stealing, 29tli ult., a lady's gold open- face Geneva watch, No. 42258, and long gold neckchain, with small oblcfng locket and pencil attached, ROBERT WILLIAM ANNOT, age 24, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes blue, no whiskers or moustache; dress, dark brown tweed suit, hard felt hat. A deserter from 4th Dragoon Guards, see POLICE GAZETTE, 18th ult. 9.— Y Division.— For stealing, 2iul inst, a silver lever watch, " Murdoch and Co.," on works, a pair of brown tweed striped trousers, 1 black diagonal cloth vest, 1 white shirt, " Von Berg, Birmingham " inside collar, 1 meerschaum cigar holder, 1 silver pencil case, 2 alberts ( 1 silver, one plated), 1 pair silver sleeve links, and 1 collar, A MAN, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, hair brown, chin shaved, cross- eyed, bandage on right hand ; dress, grey jacket, moleskin trousers, hard felt hat; gave the name of GEORGE PULTON, and stated lie was a watchman. CITY OF LONDON, 10.— For stealing, 5th inst., an Oxford mixture Melton single breasted Chesterfield overcoat, both shoulders padded ( one more than the other), black Italian silk lining, two side pockets, one ticket, one inside right breast, one outside left, edges double stitched, A MAN, age 23, height 5 ft. 6 in., fair, whiskers and small moustache fair, pockpitted; dressed in dark clothes and hard felt hat. Can be identified. 11.— For obtaining goods by false pretences, GEORGE LUSCOMBE,' age 45, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion dark, hair, full whiskers, and moustache dark ( turning grey), shaved under chin, eyes hazel, stout build ; dress, brown suit, black hard felt hat A traveller. Warrant issued. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, Great Scotland Yard, London, S. W. 12.— For defrauding Assurance Company, LIONEL BATLEY, alias LIONEL JONES, JAMES LEWIS, Expiree, Reg. No. 14560, late of 7, Albion- road, Lewisliam- road, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes grey, oval face, stout build, space between two front upper teeth, lost a lower tooth left side, three small sore marks back of left hand, one back of right hand, three burn marks on left leg, dimple on chin. Kept the " Goldsmith's Arms," Bartholomew Close, a short time ago. Known to Police at Woolwich and Greenwich. Warrant issued. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. £ 100 REWARD. 13 .— For embezzlement, WILLIAM LONGMORE age 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in , complexion pale, hair, moustache, and small side whiskers black; dress, brown overcoat, black frock coat, dark vest and trousers, black felt hat. Warrant issued. 2.— K Division.— WHEREAS between 9.45 a. m. and 1.30 p. m. on MONDAY, the 10th DECEMBER, 1883, MRS. ANNIE HANCOCK, was found dead at the foot of the stairs in the passage of No. 34, SUTHERLAND ROAD, BOW, having been stabbed in the neck, and a Coroner's Jury have returned a verdict of Wilful Murder against some Person or Persons unknown. A Reward of £ 100 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person ( other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom) who shall give such information as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the Murderer or Murderers; and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious PARDON to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like residt. FACSIMILE OF LETTER. On the evening of Friday, ' November 9tli, 1883, a fraudulent letter was de- livered to the deceased, and, in view of the murder aforesaid, it is desirable to trace the writer thereof. Warrant issued. £ 50 Reward. 16.— Absconded 18th ult. charged on a warrant with fraudulent bankruptcy, MAURICE ABRAHAM HYMAN, age 38, height Sft. 8in., stout build, com- plexion pale, hair, whiskers, beard, and moustache light brown ; dress respectable. £ 20 reward will be paid by Messrs. Pritchard, Englefield & Co., Solicitors, Painters Hall, Little Trinity Lane, London, E. C., for bis apprehension. Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective Department, Old Jewry, London. BEDFORDSHIRE. 17.— Dun sta b I e ( Borough). — For obtaining by- false pretences 31st ult. a portable harmonium in expanding case, CHARLES CONWAY, alias MINNEY, age 32, height 5ft. 4in., complexion dark, full face, hair ( turning grey) dark. Has served in the Army, has been agent to a travelling company, and lias friends at New Cross. May endeavour to pledge or sell, the harmonium, or may be found playing the instrument in public houses, See. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable, Dunstable. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 18.— Wisbech ( Borough).-—- On a charge of fraud, WILLIAM BALDREY, alias GEORGE PERKINS, a stone dresser, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., com- plexion fresh, moustache ( slight) and whiskers sandy, lias last some teeth in front upper jaw; dress, coloured clothes, carries a satchel across his shoulder ; accom- panied by bis wife and a little boy. Warrant issued. 19.— Wisbech ( Borough).— For stealing 40 feet of chain, and a hay- cutting knife ( recovered), ROBERT MORTON FISHER, a seaman, age 25, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, bail- and moustache dark ; dress, old blue pilot jacket, fustian trousers ( much worn), cheese cutter cap ; of dirty appearance. A native of Boston, America. Information to Head Constable Sliarpe, Wisbech. DORSETSHIRE. 20.— Poole ( County).— Woodcut portrait and des- cription of WILLIAM MARSHALL, charged with embezzlment age about 28, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., com- plexion fair, hair brown, eyes blue : dress ( when he left Poole), dark ribbed coat and vest, black bowler hat. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Hunt, Poole, Dorset. EDINBURGH. 21. — Edinburgh ( City). — On a charge of fraudulently obtaining goods and jewellery by means of worthless cheques, JOHN COCHRANE, age about 24, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in, ordinary build, complexion fresh, hair dark, whiskers and moustache dark brown, moufh slightly twisted ( one side of cliin smaller than the other); dress, dark cloth overcoat, dark tweed trousers, black round felt hat; addicted to drink and keeps low company. Left by rail for the South of England on tlic night of 28th ult., when he had in his possession a brown dome- shaped trunk, a port- manteau, a long case ( supposed containing two guns), and a gold keyless demi- hunting lever watch, No. 87,878, plain cases, enamelled chapters outside front case, an open curb pattern 9 carat Albert chain weighing If ozs. May endeavour to emigrate and probably pawn the above articles. Particular enquiry is requested at seaports with a view to his appre- hension. ESSEX. 22.— Brentwood ( County).— For stealing 30th ult., by burglary at Grays:— 1 cash- box containing £ 7 gold and £ 3 silver ( box recovered), 1 masonic jewel, " Presented to John Cox, Lodge No. 12," inscribed on back, 1 plain gold mourning ring, " In memory of" in enamelled letters, plaited hair in centre, 1 black cowhide bag, black bandies with two brass rings, 3 dozen plain white pocket handkerchiefs, some marked " E. and N. Newman," 6 silk handkerchiefs, blue, and black spotted borders, ( supposed) a MAN who is known as PROCTOR, age 24 or 25, height 5ft. 4 or 5in., complexion fair, hair and moustache ( small) light, eyes light blue, prominent forehead; dress, black diagonal coat and vest, blue striped trousers, side spring boots, patent fronts, black hard felt hat ( worn at back), red and blue striped scarf or wrapper, steel scarf pin. Has spoken a great deal about Wenlock Street and Edgware Road, London. Information to Supt. Dobson, Brentwood. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 23.— Chipping Sodbury ( Courtly).— For house- breaking and stealing :— One pair blankets. One twill sheet. A black and white striped shirt. A lady's black cloth jacket, false pockets on hips. A black corded sleeveless jacket, trimmed black velvet, and beaded fringe. A new brown linsey skirt, two frills round bottom, and black velvet band. Flannel petticoat, without strings or button. A nightdress. A pair of side spring boots. A child's black cloth jacket, with fringe. One half- dozen 4- pronged forks ( common metal). A silver brooch with stone in centre, And a large piece of flowered chintz. A MAN ( unknown), age 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion, hair, eyes and whiskers dark. Information to Supt. Critchley, Chipping Sodbury, Gloucester. HAMPSHIRE. 24.— Kingsclere ( County).— For being concerned with four others ( convicted at last Winchester Assizes) in committing rape and assault, on the 29th December last, at Whitchurch, WILLIAM STAGG, age about 20, height 5ft. 6in., complexion fresh, round full face, hair brown, eyes grey, slight cast in one, sup- posed right; dressed generally as a stablemen or groom ; has been employed as boots at hotels. Native of Whitchurch. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Waters, Kingsclere. 25,— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing, 29th ult, £ 38, HENRY ROBERT HEARN, age 24, height 6 ft., complexion fair, hair ( cut. short) brown, eyes hazel, small side whiskers and moustache, thin features, long cliin, slight build, carries bead slightly forward when walking ; dress ( when last seen), small check tweed reefing coat, vest and trousers, long brown single breasted overcoat, with velvet collar, hard black felt hat. Has been a clerk, well educated, and of good address; frequents billiard rooms, is of somewhat dissipated habits and spends money freely. Information to Chief Constable Cosser, Landport, Portsmouth. HUNTINGDONSHIRE. JUNO D'LEONORMADA, charged with stealing a pony, cart, and harness, at St. Neot's on 25th March, 1882 ( not yet recovered), age about 40, height 5ft. 10in., complexion pale, hair ( thin), moustache, and beard light ( if not shaved), walks erect, small scar right cheek and shin bone. Suffers from epilepsy. In the habit of wearing false hair and moustache, and occasionally dresses like a woman. Visits towns and villages, hires rooms and practises las a phrenologist, and sometimes as a fortune teller, and gives dancing lessons. Very clever at fancy wool work, at which he is almost always employed. Has followed the occupa- tion of cook or waiter. Has been twice married, and wives supposed still living, and very likely gone through the marriage ceremony with a third woman. Has been convicted in Germany, and about three or four years ago was apprehended at King's- cross, London, for larceny committed near Bacup, Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Copping, St. Neots. KENT. 27.— Dover ( Borough).— For deserting wife and family, ROBERT MACKIE, age 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair, whiskers, beard and moustache dark, eyes blue ; dress, tweed suit, black hard felt hat. A shoemaker. Native of Dover. Addicted to drink, and works at gutta perclia as well as leather work. Warrant issued. 28.— Dover ( Borough).— For deserting familv, WILLIE STUART CLARK, age 36, height 5 ft. " 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, h air brown, whiskers, beard and moustache sandy; dress ( generally), dark clothes, and hard felt hat. A carpenter and joiner. Native of Dover. Has a brother in business at Brixton, and was seen at the Adelphi Theatre about ten days ago. Information to Supt. Sanders, Town Hall, Dover. LANARKSHIRE. 29.— Glasgow ( City).— For embezzling £ 120, GEORGE SWORD TURNBULL, an accountant, about 35, height about 6 foot 1 inch, thin make, fair complexion, light yellowish moustache ( worn full and long), short mutton chop whiskers, otherwise clean shaved, fair hair ( worn long and brushed well back from forehead), high forehead, long- sharp nose, large mouth, prominent cheek bones, thin features, lost first joint of one of his fingers ; usually dressed in brown Newmarket overcoat, dark under clothes, wears scarf- pin in shape of girl's boot, satin hat, which he wears a little to side ; nervous manner. Absconded on the afternoon of Tuesday last, 22nd ult., and it is supposed that he will endeavour to go abroad. Police officers are requested to have particular search and inquiry made for accused at hotels, shipping offices, and other likely places, and, if found, to arrest and wire. Warrant issued. LANCASHIRE. £ 20 REWARD. 30.— Manchester ( City).— For stealing 26tli ult. £ 200, ALLAN DAVID PARKS, a bookkeeper, age 29, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion very fair, hair and moustache light, no whiskers, eyes blue, prominent nose, slightly bow- legged, rather nasal tone of voice: dress, light tweed shooting coat, dark trousers, and black hat. Nativfc of Belfast. It is requested that enquiry be made at railway stations, shipping offices, hotels, &. C. Warrant issued. £ 20 Reward will be paid by the Chief Constable of Manchester for his apprehension, to whom information should be given. 31.— Southport ( Borough).— For embezzling £ 4 2s. 6d. on 29th December last, JOHN IIAWORTH, age 45, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, hair and whiskers brown, stout build; dress, dark over- coat, hard felt hat. Native of Southport. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Kershaw, Southport. 26- Neots ( County)— Woodcut portrait and description of CHRISTIAN GOTTLIEB AUGUST HAASE, alias HAUTCH, from Coeslin, Prussia, alias NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. £ 35 REWARD. 32.— Mansfield ( County).— Woodcut portrait and description of SAMUEL DANKS, a bank clerk, wanted for stealing, 21st ult., at Mansfield, about £ 500, v; z:—£ 20116s. 8d. in cash ( mostly sovereigns), £ 290 in notes (£ 145 on various country banks, and £ 145 on Bank of England, nearly all small amounts, N os. unknown), the moneys of his employers, the Nottingham and Notting- hamshire Banking Company, age 16, height about 5 ft. 10 in., spare build, complexion pale, thin lips, lmir ( cut short) dark brown, head set short on shoulders, which appear high, lias a slightly cynical expression when speaking, and is abrupt in liis answers: left handed ( but uses right when writing); resided with his mother at Blue Bell- hill, Nottingham; can play 4 T H E POLICE GAZETT'H,. OXFORDSHIRE. 33.— Oxford ( County).-— For breaking open a bureau and stealing therefrom £ 7 14s., at Hampton Poyle, 1st inst., CHARLES WATTS, alias TERENCE FRANCIS D'LACEY, age 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., com plexion, hair, and moustache dark, eyes grey, scar on third finger left hand from abscess: dress, long dark overcoat, dark trousers, hard black hat, side- spring boots. They represented that a relative had died, and that their uncle had sent a cheque for £ 25 to cover the funeral expenses. They gave the order for burial to cost £ 16, receiving £ 9 from Mr. Munday, as balancc. The cheque which was on the City Bank, Limited, London, is a forgery, the cheque- book having been stolen from a customer. There are similar charges against these persons here.
