All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. .2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. t. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, ani the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, anil engravings of _ stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. > 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be Apprehended or of stolen property bear u number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents, or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must, be in advance, either at the office, Great Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond § Co.,'' Post Office Order payable at Charing Cross, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements arc accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Witling, 12O, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. £ 100 REWARD. 1.— K Division.—- WHEREAS between 9.45 a. m. and 1.30 p. m. on MONDAY, the 10th DECEMBER, 1883, MRS. ANNIE HANCOCK, was found dead at the foot of the stairs in the passage of No. 34, SUTHERLAND ROAD, BOW, having been stabbed in the neck, and a Coroner's Jury have returned a verdict of Wilful Murder against some Person or Persons unknown. A Reward of £ 100 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person ( other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom) who shall give such information as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the Murderer or Murderers; and the Secretary of State for the Home. Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious IP A. IBL IO O 3& T to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. FACSIMILE OF LETTER. On the evening of Friday, November 9th, 1883, a fraudulent letter was de- livered to the deceased, and, in view of the murder aforesaid, it is desirable to trace the writer thereof. C TY CF LONDON. £ 200 REWARD. 8.— Woodcu and descript'on of JAMH8 DAVIS lato t- tcrelar , to the Lundon and San Fi'ancieco Bank, London, who absconded, i9th November last, stealing securities value £ 50,000, age about 45 ( looks younger , height 5 ft. 9 in., thin, hair black, gentlemanly appearance, when last seen had shaved all hair off his face except at sides ( slight). Left Bognor on 7th inst., where he had been staying in private apartments, Supposed to have the following £ 10 Bank of England notes in his possession : Nos. 22776, 22777, 22778, • 22779, 22782. 22783, 22784, 22785, 22786, 22787, 22788, and 22792, all dated 20th Apri, 1863. £ 200 reward will be paid by the Directors of the Loudon and San Francisco Bank. Information to Inspector Mc William, Detective Department, Old Jewry, London. 9.— For stealing, 21st inst., a hexagon- shapsd glass case, lined red velvet, containing about 28 Catholic rosary j. old rings, pattern various, principal v crosses, beaded ail round, French manufacture, TWO MEN; 1st, ate 21, height medium, pale full face, large nose, lost portion of two fingers left hand; dress, dark coat ;. nd dee'stalker hat; 2nd, younger, slim build; dress dark clothes and deerstalker hat; both of respectable appe nance. First can be identified, who went into a sho > under the pretence of making a purchase, and while the attendant was engaged took the case and decamped. 10.— For obtaining by confidence trick, 21st inst., 13 £ 5 Bank of England notes, Nos. 55467- 79, dated 25th October, 1883, and £ 20 in gold, TWO MEN ; 1st, age 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., dark, fall beard and moustache ( turning grey) ; dress, dark overcoat, high .3 "' " ' •" '"' '. BRECONSHIRE. 11.— Crickhowejl ( County).— For obtaining five shillings from General Campbell, by means of a begging petition, on 14th inst., two men, 1st— age ib'> u£ 40, height about 5 ft. 10 in., hair dark brown, whiskers ( Dundreary style) and mou- tache brown; dress, dark brown clothes, grey cap with two peaks : 2nd— age from 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., iiair, vhiskers, and moustache dark; dress, dark clothes, black soft bowler hat. DEVONSHIRE. ir.— Bideforcl ( Borough).— For stealing, 11th nst., a black ribbed overcoat, pockets at sides and mtside breast, bound black braid; dark plaid jacket, with pockets at sides and inside aud outside breast; lark plaid trousjrs of same material, nearly new; a white silk muffl.' r and a lady's gold Geneva watch ( largo size), gold face aud seconds hand, JOHN HEARD, alias JOHN HENRY RIDD, alias HENRY 11UDD, a lath cutter, age 2n, height 5 ft. 0 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache light brown, whiskers shaved of!', eyes grey, rather high forehead ; dress, in stolen clothes or in a short grey overcoat, dark trousers, black bowler hat, heavy lace boots. Is in the habit of tramping the country, obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences. Was convicted at Exeter Quarter Sessions i7th October last in name of Henry Kudd, and sentenced to six weeks hard labour. Information to Head Constable Morgan, Bidei'ord. 14.— Great Torrington ( Borough).— Absconded from Torrington in January, 1880, leaving his wife and family chargeable to the common fund of that Union, also wanted for night poaching, ROBERT POLLARD, alias JOSEPH SNELL, a navvy, age 33, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion, hair and moustache light, eyes grey, a mole near one ear, seams on back of one hand and thumb, injured ( supposed right) caused by an accident in a threshing machine, walks stiff in one leg, dressed as a navvy. Native of Great Torringtoii. Supposed working on some railway. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Quick, Great Torrington. ESSEX. 15.— Braintree ( County).— For stealing watches entrusted to him to repair, kc.. the property of Charles Brock and others, S. WEBB, a watch and clock cleaner, age 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., com- plexion dark, hair and moustache dark brown, chin shaved ; dress, old black cloth hard felt hat. Is ac- companied by his wife aud two children, one a boy age about 8, and an infant 4 months. Supposed a native of Bristol. Frequents low lodging houses and beer houses. Warrant issued. FLINTSHIRE. 16.— Whitchurch, Salop ( County).-^ Yorcutting the hair from the tails of 33 cows ( recovered) during night cf 17tli inst., a man, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion and hair dark, cut on chin; dress, fur cap with ear flaps, drab jacket, moleskin or corduroy trousers, lace boots. He is also wanted for similar offences in Cheshire. Information to Supt. Bolton, Ilanmer, Whitchurch, Salop. KENT. 17.— Tunbridge Wells ( Borough). — For embezzlement, EMILY LOUISA PhTERS, age 18, height 5 ft. in.,, complexion fair, hair light; dress, black velvet and black jacket, black fur tippet, black high crowned straw hat with black feather. Was a shopwoman at a turnery establishment. Stated she was going to Godstone and then to London. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Tun! ri lje Wells. 4 LANARKSHIRE. 18.— Coatbridge { County).— For stabbing with intent 1st inst., JAMES HART alias " CURLY," age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., hair ( cut short) reddish or fair, curly when allowed to grow, moustache and billy goat, beard ( turning grey) sand)-, stout build; dress, dark blue shooting coat much worn, ( lark trousers, velvet cap ; walks with one hand in trouser pocket, with one shoulder slightly elevated. Is a Roman Catholic, does not attend chapel regularly, suspected of Nationalist sympathies, addicted to drink, and quarrelsome when drunk. An Irishman reared in Scotland, speaks with Scotch accent. Has wife and children in Coatbridge. Well known at Willington, Shotley Bridge, C'onsett, and . Tarrow ( all in Durham), and is likely to seek work there, more especially at Willington. ' Styled a " left- hand puddler," and has lately worked at the Clydesdale, Mossend, and Coat- bridge Ironworks, Lanarkshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Stewart, Airdrie, N. B. LANCASHIRE. 19.— 3acup { County).— For stealing, 21st inst., at Baeup. 1 princess robe dress, marone colour, trimmed marone velvet, small size, nearly new; 2 woollen pettier at purple black stripes, partly worn ; 2 pairs of women's boots, side springs, kid tops, no toe caps, tips on heels, in good repair : 1 bodice, marone colour, trammed marone Velvet, rather worn: 1 shoulder shawl, nsw, white brown, arid orange plaid, ELLEN KELLY, a supervisee, age 17, height 4 ft. 7 in., com- plexion pale, hair brown, eyes blue, scar on right eyebrow, stout build, round face: dress ( supposed), part < f stolen property. fn ormation to 8upt, Henderson, IJacup. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 20. — T redegar ( County). — Further information respecting E. YELLAND,' alias HENRY FISHER ( see POLICE GAZETTE, 12th Nov. last). He was seen at L'artford, Kent, a short time ago, representing himself to be the Chief Superintendent of the Positive Government Life Assurance Company, and giving the name of William Thomas : dress, as described in first information. Has also recently viited Walthamstow, Essex, and represented himself to be an agent of the Whittington Life Assurance Company. He is not known at the offices of either company. Special attention called to this man, who is believed to be travelling about the country as a general swindler. Warrant issued. Information to Captain Parker, Monmouthshire Constabulary, Tredegar. PERTHSHIRE. 21.— Perth { Coumy).— For obtaining board and lodgings by fraud, a MAN. age. 35 to 40, height about 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, hair fair or brown, whiskers ( short) red, no beard or moustache ; dress, dark tweed jacket, vest, raid trousers, blue pilot over- coat, brown peak cap: speaks with r broad ( supposed Aberdeen) dialect. Had a black collie dog. white spot on breast. His modus operandi is to travel about the country, and calling at cottars' and labourers' houses, represent himself to be a shepherd in employ- ment of some well known farmer, that he is in charge of sheep in neighbourhood, and ask to be aecom- moelated for the night, & c., quietly decamping in the morning. Police are requested to wire if found. Information' to Deputy Chief Constable Maenherson, Ccr.:; ty Police, Perth. 22.— Dunblane ( Connty).-~ For stealing. 0th inst.. from the servants bothy at Luib Hotel, Perthshire, a brown leather pocket book containing two £ 5 notes and seven £ 1 notes, all Bank of Scotland, JAMES BANNERMAN, an ostler or labourer, age about GO. height G ft. 10 in., stout build, scar right side of nose, hair grey, whiskers and moustache, shaved on chin: rlress. dark brown jacket, dirty white cord trousers, dark brown fur cap, leather leggings. Native of Aberdeenshire, addicted to drink; may be found obout hotel stables and public houses, or may endeavour to obtain employment from farmers. * Has been previously convicted at Perth, 19th January, 18S3, and sentenced to three months imprisonment. SHROPSHIRE. £ 5 Reward, 23.— Shrewsbury { Borough).— For embezzling the moneys of Mr. Tnomas Charles ' 1 rounccr and another by whom he was employed. JOHN WILLIAM OWEN, a" brewer's clerk ( formerly a coal merchant at Welshpool and Shrewsbury), age about 33, height 5 ft. 8 in , very stout build, large belly, complexion ( full face) fresh, hair dark, whiskers and board ( short) and moustache ( may be shaved) brown, rather bow- legged, turns feet out when walking; has a habit of carrying his hands behind liini beneath his coat; dress, dark clothes, hard felt hat. Native of Shrewsbury, well known amongst brewers' clerks and travellers, frequents coursing meetings and billiard rooms; well known about Welshpool. £ 5 Reward will be paid by Mr. Trouncer, brewer, Shrewsbury. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Harrop, Shrewsbury, STAFFORDSHIRE. 24 — Brownhills { County). — Absconded after stealing. 2 ith ult.. while lodging with William Powell, at Cannock, an old verge watch, dial cracked ( No. 3068), and a suit of boy's dark clothes, much worn, JAMES UNDERBILL." age 10, height 5 ft., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown ; dress, dark suit, much worn, dark cloth cap with leather peak, and clogs. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Barrett, Brownhills, Walsall. 25.— Burslem ( County).-— For obtaining, 18thult., £ l Is. 8( 1. by representing that he would deliver in a few days three dozen of " Spaulding's Ink Erasers," but failed to do so, G. O. FREEMAN, age between 36 and 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair, beard, and moustache dark ; dress, brown overcoat and trousers, high hat. Gave his address as " 10, South Molton Street, London. W." ( false). Believed to be travelling from tewn to town, selling, or pretend- ing to sell, or take orders for, these " ink erasers." Was at Stafford on 14th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem. SUSSEX. 2G.— Rye { Borough).— For attempting to enter the " Ship" public house by pushing back window fastening shortly before midnight 22nd inst., two men— 1st. age about 35, height 5 ft. 11 in. or Gft., complexion, hair and moustache dark, slight figure, military appearance; dress, long dark single breasted overcoat, blaek hard felt hats— 2nd, age about 32, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in.; dress, dark coat, black hard felt hat, apparently Irishmen. They arc also suspected of breaking into the premises of Mr. Harvey, sail- maker, Strand. Rye, and stealing therefrom 10s. or 12s., and part of a bottle of brandy. Information to Supt. Bourne, Rye. WANTED. 67.— Charged with fraud, and wilful imposition, JOHN ERASER, alias JOHN CLARK, a vagrant, about 67 years of age, 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout make, reddish complexion, eyes weak and red looking, neck short, front of head bald, reddish hair turning grey, large scar on nose, reddish whiskers mixed with grey, dialect mixed Irish and Scotch, very talkative; dress, black hard felt hat, a dark tweed coat, vest and trousers of the same material, scarf round neck, strong boots much worn, has been several times convicted of fraud. He represents that he is a . shipwrecked sailor, and that he has got left arm injured, he is well known to the Police throughout Scotland. If found aoprehend, and secure all documents found in his possession lie has got a begging petition, and a small book in which he enters the money received opposite.
