The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, cmd a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. Tht Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, a* accurate as possible, Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 6984 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1883. NottCC.— It ii requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed fo the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. O. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all lietters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • f Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 8). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by tne persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without khs apprehension of the offender. It Is particularly requested that when, owing either to insufficiency or incorrectness of the address or ether- wise, Copies of this Gazette are delivered to persons, to whom they are not addressed, or who are not now entitled to receive them, such Copies may be at once returned through the Post to " The Editor, Bow Street, London." PRISON and PC LICE AUTHORITIES are requested to be good enough to inform the Editor of the abolition of Gaols, Stations, & c., and of any circumstances rendering the supply of the " Police Gazette" no longer necessary. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Whereas on the evening of the 20th ultimo, a Danish seaman, named Sven Hansen, who was ; second mate on board the s. e. ' Douro,' theu lying iu the South Dock, Sun- derland, was stabbed on his right breast, on the dock side, from which he died about an hour afterwards, A coroner's jury have returned a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against Borne person or persons unknown. Notice ia hereby given, that Her Majesty's Government offer A REWARD of £ 100 to any person ( other than a person belonging to a Police Force in the United Kingdom) who shall give such infor- mation and evidence aa shall lead to the discovery and con- viction of the Murderer, or Murderers, and the Secretary of State will advise the Grant of Her Majesty's Gracious PARDON to any Accomplice not being the person who actually com- mitted the Murder, who shall give such evidence aa shall lead to a like result. Stolen from the person at Swaffham, on 23rd ultimo :— a small silver Geneva Watch; a black leather Purse, Alexandra Palace stamped on the back, containing £ 1 6s. By a man about 30 years of age, 5 feet C inches high, dark hair and moustache ; dressed in old cord trousers, old dark coat and vest, lace- up shoes, very much worn ; old black billyoock hat; has been in the army. Stolen from the person at Burton- on- Trent, on 1st inst. : a gold lever Watch, white dial, gold fingers, engraved on back ' Presented to Joseph Geary, by the servants of Messrs. Stolen from the person at Frome Agricultural and Dog Show, on 26th ultimo :— a gold keyless demi- hunting Geneva Watch, gold dial, No. 17364, maker ' R. Webster, London', ha vin g the monogram'J. H. S.' eDgraved on back. £ 10 reward will be paid for its recovery, in good order, and conviction of the thief. Information to the Supt. of Police, FROME, Somer- setshire.— Bow- street, October 1. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Wrotham, Kent, between 7 a. m. aud 6 30| p m. 26th ub. :— a black Overcoat; a suit of dark cloth Clothes ; a pair of cotton Braces ; a light print Dress ; and six white Aprons, marked ' E. Whitfen' iu one corner in ink. Information to Mr. Supt R. Hulse, Polieo Station, WEST MAILING, Kent.— Bow- st., Oct. 5. Wanted foi breaking and entering a shop ( in company with another young man in custody), between 8 30 p m. 20th and7' 30a. m. 21st ultimo, and stealing therefrom,— 5 pairs of new Clogs, 2 red HandKerchiefs, and about I lb. of Tobacco :— two men, one about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, and is a carter ; dressed, when last seen, in brown cloth jaoket, cord trousers, clogs, and cap, which hooks down in front, and he usually wears a white handkerchief round his neck. Tne other about 19 or 20 years of age, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, very pale complexion, brown hair ; dressed, when last seeD, in black worsted coat ( far worn), cord trousers, clogs, and cap, and usually wears a white handkerchief round his neck. The Clogs have not yet been recovered. Pleaee cause every possible inquiry to be made respecting the above, and if any information be obtained communicate with Mr. Geo. Dalgleisb, Chief Constable, ASHTON- UNDER LYNE - Lou- street, October 3. Stolen by means of shopbreaking, between 8 p. m. 27th, and 8 a. m. 28th u'timo, at Blackburn :— six lad'es silver Alberts, fancy patterns ; a gentleman's gold Albert, out of repair in two or three places, had a Seal attached, with blood store on one side, and sardonyx on the other; ten gentleman's Hall marked silver Guards, curb and other pitterss, some had Medals attached to them ; three crown enamelled Brooches ; two half- crown Ditto ; several other Brooches, of various patterns, which had been left at the shop for repairs ; twelve silver finger Rings, various patterns. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Stolen from Bee Hall Farm, Burnley, on 28th ultimo :— a bay Horse with black legs, about 14 hands high, and very short stumpy tail, lame on near fore foot, 9 years old, in good condition, value £ 10. Information to County Police Office, BURNLEY.— Bow- street, October 5. Further information respecting the red roan waggon Horse, stolen from a field at Emstrey, near Shrewsbury, and advertised in Police Gazette of 10th ultimo :— The Horse has been traced to Bloxwicb, Staffordshire, in the possession of a man about 40 or 45 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark hair and whiskers, no moustache, clean shaven chin, stout build ; dressed in a dark jacket, brown tight- fitting trousers, black soft billycock ha'., an^ had the appearance of a carter. Information to Mr. Superintendent Edwards, County Constabulary, SHREWSBURY. — Bow- street, October 5. Stolen from Coldham Common, in the borough of Cam- bridge, supposed during the night of 24th ultimo :— a black Cart Horse, 8 or 9 years old, 14 or 15 hands high, off knee chipped, has a patch of white hairs on each shoulder caused by the collar, and in good condition. Information to Mr. Turrall, Chief of Police, CAMBRIDGE,— Bow- street, October 3. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Stolen at Moss Side, on 2Ist instant:— a lady's long black satin Jacket, two rows of black lace on bottom, tuffed lace- up front with bows, three rows of lace round neck, also lace on end of sleeves, lined with black alpaca, sleeves lined with black woollen cloth. By a woman, who lodged in the house a day and a night, about 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark hair, with fringe in front, pale complexion, and good- looking ; dressed in black dress, black cloth jacket, trimmed with black fur, larga black hat, with beaded lace, two bands of claret velvet round the hat, black feathers in front, white silk necktie, with silver brooch. Stolen between 6 p m. arid 6i p. m. 22nd ult., at Failsworth, £ 210s. in Gold. By a man and woman :— the man, a labourer, about 24 or 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, slender build, tattooed bracelet on both wrists, anchor, woman's head, and heart & c.; dressed in an old black round shaped coat, black cord trousers, old low boot->, and brown pot hat; the woman, about 25 years of age, about 4 feet 11 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, ver y slender build ; dressed in an old black dress, light brown ulster, black straw hat, with white feathers, and elastic- side boots ; she has a male child, about 10 months old, wrapped in grey, white, and black shawl, brown stuff frock, and new clogs, marked ' J. Barlow, Oldham'. Information to County PoUce Office, OLD TRAFFORD, Manches- ter.— Bow- street, October 5, Charged with stealing from her lodgings, at Burton- on- Trent, on Ist instant, one silver lever Wwich, open face, white dial, No. 51929, and 5368 ou case, a silver Guard attached, snake pattern, appended a silver watch Key, and a Seal set with a red stone and a blanket, nearly new :— a woman, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, grey eyes, well made, inclined to be stout, respectable appearance, and fairly educated; dressed in a dark coloured mantle, dark navy blue dress, small black bonnet, trimmed with black beads, buttoned boots, much worn. In- formation to James Gilbride, Supt., BURTON- ON- TRENT.— Bow- street, October 5. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Norton on the evening of 2nd instant:— a silver Tablespoon marked ' E. A.' ; 3 plated Forts, large size ; 3 plated Forks, small size. By a man 45 yeara of age, 5 feet 9 ioches high, fresh complexion, blue eyes, stout build, sandy hair and beard. He lodged at the house for a week, and left on the evening of the 2nd inst.; dressed in a dark grey coat and vest, blue trousers and black stiff felt hat, old boots. Bepresenting to be fitting telophones, formerly a soldier, worked at Birmingham aud in Wales. Information to Mr. Supt. Farrah, East Yorkshire Constabu- lary, NORTON, Malton.— Bow- street, October 5. Stolem at Stockport, about 2 p. m. 30th ultimo :— a pair of man's black corduroy Trousers, patent stuil buttons, nearly new ; a man's black cloth doub'e- bieastrd Vest, black cloth- covered buttons, bottom one short, right side part worn ; a Cigarette Machine; a pair of Spectic'es, thick frames, old- fashioned ; and a Penknife, value 16s. By a man ( who lodged in the house one night), about 60 years of age, 5 feet 6 it ches high, ruddy comp'exion, sandy hair and whiskers turning grey, and stout build ; dressed in blue coat, brown trousers, lace- up boots, and black hard felt hat; stated he was a Scotchman, a widower, with one daughter, and a mill- warper by trade, but supposed to be a foundry labourer. He left beh nd him a Pocket Kuife, with the name ' T. rngham ' on the length of the blade ; aid a quantity of Papers, with pieces of Shakespeare's plays written in Scotch upon them ; and other pipers bearing the names of the towns Darlington, Cadiwhead, and Durham. Information to the Borough Poliee, STOCKPORT.— Bow- street, October 5. Absconded, charged with Embezzlement :- ALEXANDER STRACHAN, 30 years of age, 6 feet inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair and moustache ; dressed in black coat and vest, light mixture trousers, and bla- k felt hat; a hosier and hatter. Wife rasides with her mother, Mrs. Latham, 19, Christopher- street, Sunderland. Warrant issued. Information to the Director of Criminal Investiga- tions, GREAT SCOTLAND YAP. D, S. W— Metropolitan Police, October 5. The Watch stolen from a cottage at Whitfield, on 16th Augn- t last, and advertised in Police Gazette of 22nd and subsequent dates, has been recovered, and the thief appre- hended. Stolen outside the White Hart Inn, Northwick, on 24th ultimo :— a pair of man's dark tweed mixture Trousers, fly- fronts ; a pair of white cord Breeches, large pattern, fly fronts with Leggings attached, both tew. By two men, both about 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high ; dressed in dark clothes. No further description can be given. Information to Mr. Supt. Critchley, SODBURY, Gloucestershire. — Bow- street, October 5. Wanted on two charges of Fowl stealing at Earley, Reading, on 27th ultimo :— a man 36 years of age, 5 feet 6 ins. high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, sandy whiskers and moustache ( short), hazel eyes, oval face, proportionate build, lost tip of forefinger left hand, ' S' tattooed on right forearm. A chimney sweeper, is well known at Hanbury, Oxford and Aylesbury. Information to Inspector Atkin, County Police Station, WOKINGHAM.— Bow- stree', October 5. Charged at Liverpool with embezzlement:— AUSTIN MOORE, a clerk, 22 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, slim build, dark complexion and hair, no whiskers or moustache, has a peculiar twitching atthesido of his mouth when talking, and fond of debating against atheism, is a native of Longport, Staffordshire ; dressed when last seen, in an old black frock coat and vest, grey tweed trousers, aud hard felt hat. Infor- mation to Detective Department, LIVERPOOL.— Bow- street, October 5. Further information respecting the gold Watch stolen in Dudley, on 18th ultimo :— a lady's gold lever Watch, No. 82,799, open face ; a long gold Chain, small plain links, been broken in two or three places, and tied together with thread. By a man about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark whiskers and moustache lost one leg ( supposed right), and has a wooden one ; dressed in a suit of black cloth clothes, and high black hat. Information to Mr. Chief Supt. Burton, Borough Police Office, DUDLEY.— Bow- street, Oct. 5. Stolen between 6 and 6.30 p. m.,' 22nd ultimo, at Fails- worth :—£ 3 10s. Gold. By a Man and Woman who lodged in the house : the man, a labourer, is about 24 or 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark complexion and hair, sleider build, tattooed— bracelet on both wrists, anchor, woman's head, heart, & c. ; dressed in au old black round coat, black cord trousers, old low boots, and brown pot hat; the woman about 4 feet 11 inches high, dark cimplexion, black hair, very slender build, and ahout 25 years of age; dressed in au old black dress, light brown ulster, black straw hat with white feathers, aud elastic- side boots; she has a male child about 10 months old, wrapped in a grey, white, and black shawl, brown stuff frock, and new clogs, marked ' J. Barlow, Oldham.' Information to the County Police Office, OLD TRAFFORD.— Bow- street, October 5. Stolen in the Great Park, Windsor, on 29th ultimo : £ 1 12s. 9d. iu money ; a silver Geneva Watch, No. 25734 *; a lever hunter Watch, No. not known. Description of THOMAS PIGG, who absconded from Minsterley, Salop, on 28t 1 ultimo, charged on a warrant with embezzlement:— he in about 24 or 25 years of age, 5 feet' 3 or 4 inches high, stout built, and a Uitla bow- legged, swaggering gait when walking, fresh complexion, red face, sandy hair, cut short, and small moustache ; dressed in dark tweed suit, the coat round, Bac make, brown hard felt hat, or may be wearing a dark cap with peak, his boots are worn thin, he has previously worked at Llanwddyn Waterworks, Montgomeryshire, whei e he is now supposed to have gone. Information to Mr. Sopt. Edward*, Couuty Police, SHREWS- BURY, or to Sergeant Higgius, MINSTERLEX, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Hrno-* treet, Dctober 3. Description of private EDWARD FARMER, 11th Hussars, suuoued at Ureat Brook- street Barracks, BirmiBg ham, wanted at Birmingham on warrant, on a charge of stealing £ 19 13s. 8d. the monies of the Regimental Paymaster : — he la at out 27 years cf age, 6 feet 6i inches high, thin build, sharp features, dark hair and moustache, hazel eyes, fresh complexion, speaks quickly and stammers, native of London, and has a cockney accent; left in . regimentals, but his since returned them to Barracks, belongs to Bethnal Green, London he will probably be found in tome low public beer- house or brothel. Wanted under a warrant for stealing Potatoes from a shed at Monmouth, on 20th ultimo :— JOHN W ATKINS, 26 yrs. of age, 5 feet inches high, fresh complexion, stout build, blue eyes, staring, rouud face, and shows his teeth when he smiles, a mason by trade ; supposed working at Birmingham with a hrother.. Information to Captain Berthon, Deputy Chief Constable, MONMOUTH.— Bow- stre't, October 3. Absconded on 17th ultimo, charged on a warrant with stealing £ 100: — AUGUST E SAMSON, late of No. 29, Charlotte- street, Portland- 1 lace, London, a solicitor's Jerk, about 36 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, hair ( cut shoit) whiskers and moustache black, floridcomplexioD, aquiline nose, high receding forehead; dressed respectably, a Frenchman, speaks English with French accent. Information to Inspector McWilliam, Detective Department. City of London Police, 26, OLD JEWRY, E. C.— Bow- ttreet, October 1. Absconded from Devonport on 20th ultimo, charged with stealing £ 30, and embezzling various other sums of money :— JOHN PIDWELL, a butcher and salesman, be is 28 years of a^ e, 5 feet 6 inches high, slight build, pale coai plexion, sharp features, light brown ha; r, small light mous- tache, no whiskers, leans his head foiward when walking; dressed in blue ribbed cloth coat and vest aud b! a ; k trousers ; has been seen in London sine? he absconded. Information to John Lynn, Head Constable, DEVONPORT, who holds warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 1. Charged on warrant, with others in custody, with steal- ing a Rick Cloth ( recovered) at East Knoyle, on 26th ultimo : — WALTER DAVIS, a native of Standerwick, Somerset, about 25 to 28 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, dark hair and slight whiskers, and pale complexion ; dressed in a light cloth suit, aud hard bowler hat. And HENRY PIKE, a native of Rudge, Somerset, about 28 to 30 years of age, 5 ft. 6 or 7, inches high, light complexion, bald on top of head, large prominent nose, high shoulders, small light whiskers on side of face ; dressed in light suit, and hard bowler hat. Both men are low horse dealers, generally attend fairs in Wilts and the adjoining counties. These men have aosconded and m » y be found iu company with the Saiusbury's and Willis's, horse dealers, with whom they are well acquainted. Infor- mation to Mr. Supt, Bull, Wilts Constabulary, HINDON.— Bow- street, October 1, FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Description of WALTER GOODE, a farm labourer, charged on a warrant with committing wilful and corrupt perjury, at the Police Com t, Holy Cross, Pershore, on 3rd July last:— he is 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh com- plexion, light brown hair, grey eyes, first finger of right hand injured and contracted, is a native of Langley> near Stratford- on- Avon ; he is likely to join the Army, or to obtain work as a navvy upon some railway. Information to Mr Supt. Kemp, i? ERSHORE, who holds a warrant for bis apprehension.— Bote- s'reet, October 5. Wanted on warrants at Dtoitwich, for obtaining £ 6 in Money, at Elmbridge, under false pretences, on 15th ultimo : — two meD, one about 40 years of age, 5 feet fi or 6 iuches high, medium build, light complexion, inclined to be sandy, cleaned shaved ; dressed in light grey suit, and black deer- stalker, had a ring on finger, carried a parcel, wrapped in brown paper, containing a linen sheet, afld some patterns of flannel, & c,, and signed his name ' J. Jimes'; the other about 30 y* ars of age, 5 feet V or 8 inches high, medium build, very dark complexion, dark hair, dark moustache, at. d supposed small dark whiskers, on side of face ; dressed iu dark blue or black suit, " black deer- stalker hat, and had a ring on finger, carried a bundle, wrapped in oil- cloth, containing cloth with a strap round. These two men travel the country, calling upon different people, stating that a Mr. Thompson, a large tailor wad ( draper iu a neighbouring town, is in difficult iea, asking for the loan of a few pounds, and leave cloth, which they represent to be worth double the amount ed the money they obtain, say they wiil fetcb it m a day cr two and return the money ; after having obtained the money, they disappear, and the cloth they leave behind, is found to be useless rubbish. Absconded, charged, on a wurract with unlawfully obtain- ing household furniture under false pretences;— FREDK. WM NEAVE, about 5 feet 5 inches high, 22 years of age, no whiskers, very slight moustache ; usually dressed in small black. and white check trousers ( tigttt fitting), sb © rt round jacket^ black low hard felt hit, has the appearance of a well-; to- do groom, and has a very slight cast in one eye. Is well known at Sandown, I. of W., also Walton- on- Naze, Essex where he has been until recently. Photograph can be obtained on application. Information to Deputy Chief Constable, AV. E. Remanded at Burslem, charged with stealing a silver Geneva Watch ( recovered) :— DANIEL IIOOPEH, of Smalltborne, puddler. 27 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, with shoes, dark complexion, hazel eyes, dark brown hair, slight moustache, medium build, blue mark on ripht eyebrow, native of Bound Oak, Brierley Hill, married ; dressed in brown hard hat, grey tweed jacket, dark tweed trousers and vest, elastic side boots, states he left Brier- ley Hill, about 5 years ago, and has worked at Silverdale and Smallthorne, for the last 5 yearp. SARAH JANE HOOPER, wife of the above, tai'oress and potter, 21 years of age, 5 fe- t 2 inches high, iu shoes, dark complexion, dark brown hair, blue eyes, slender bii'ld, native of BHurley Hill; dressed in white straw hat, trimmed with black satin, brown ulster, blue striped cotton dress, and elastic- side boots.
