No. 6977 WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1883. - Motle ® .— It if requested that all communication! for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed ( Senders, or stolon property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. O. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor mns& be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and • t Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Advertisements offering rewards must state clearly:—( 1) The amount of the reward. ( 2) The conditions on which it is payable. ( 8). The person by whom it will be paid. They should be signed or accompanied by a letter, signed by tne persons forwarding them. They should contain no expressions holding out any expectation of reward for the return of the property, without the apprehension of the offender. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AFD MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Description of WILLIAM RYAN and MARTIN McG& UN, who are charged upon a coronoi's warrant with the Wiiful Mulder of John Duke, in the borough of Bir- mingham, on 5th ultimo :— Ryan is 19 years of age, 5 feet 6 f t 7 inch s high, dark hair, sallow complexion, and thin build ; dressed when last seen in dark cut away coat and black greasy trousers ; a brass caster ; McGaun is 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, brown hair, fresh com- plexion, slightly freckled, well built, walks erect, cut scar on cheek ( supposed lef<), and speaks with a slow Irish accent. They absconded from Birmingham on 25th ultimo Infor- mation to J. Farndale, Chief Constable, BIRMINGHAM, who hold tbe coroner's warrants.— Bow- street, September 17. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Middlesbrough, between < 3 and 10 p. m. on 16th instant, by getting over the back wall and flipping the window- citch :— 1 Sovereign, 2 or 3 Florins, 3 or 4 Sixpences, an old lion Shilling with a hole in it, about 24 penny Postage Stamps, a navy blue or purpb coloured bjok Purse, medium size, in good condition, 3 compartments, lined with yellow, purple coloured e'as'ic band round it, roughly sewn together; an old black leather bag Purse, nickle silver clasp, 3 conrpirtments, middle one fastens with a clasps, and has yellow leather lining. Supposed by two men — lst, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 ins. high, slender figure, pde sallow complexion, dark hair, short dark whiskers aud moustache, and walks erect; dressed in a common snuff- coloured tweed suit and hard felt hat. 2ud, about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 7 iDches high, and stout figure ; dressed in grey- c iloured suit. Should the Purees be found upon them and the liou Shilling, please apprehend and communicate with Mr. E. J. Saggerson, Chief Constable, Police Office, MIDDLESBROUGH.— Bow- street, September 19. During the night of 10th or morning of 11th instant, the ' Cow Roast' public- house, between Burkhampstead and Triog, was burglariously entered and stolen therein :— about £ i woith of Bronze Money, a Sixpence, two Threepenny- pieces, and a pair of man's light lace- up Shoes with toe- caps. Supposed by tramps. Information to Mr. Supt. S. Chapman, HEMEL HEMPSTEAD, Herts.— Bow- street, September 19. Stolen at Hove on the evening of 16th instant, by means of housebreaking :— a lady's silver Geneva Watch, maker's name and number not known; a pair of gold Earrings ( round) about the size of sixpence, escallop pattern, with garnet stone in centre; a gold Brooch to match, with large stone in centre, and small ones round ; 2 gold Studs, buckle pattern at top, and £ 49 10s. in Gold. Supposed by a man about 40 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches higb, medium build, broad shoulders, light hair and dundreary whiskers, walks rather bow- legged : dressed in long black coat, dark trousers and flat topped felt hat, boots had a long cut on the outside. And a woman about 40 years of age, tall and thin ; dressed in dark clothes, aDd had a brown long- haired doe in her arms. Information ( o Chief Sapt. Breach, Town Hall, HOVE.— Bow- street, September 19. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Shrewsbury, between 10 p. m. on 15th aud 6 30 a. m. on 16th instant, by means of entering by a kitchen window :— a grey Coi » t, much worn, man's size, lengthened at sleeves about 5 inches, with a different material, and has been repaired under the arms with same material as coat, has 2 inside breast pockets, a outside left breas- t, and 2 hip pockets ; a table Knife, small size, black haft, blade much worn, maker's name, ' Robinson & Co., Shrewsbury'; a p~ cket Handkerchief, red ground, white stripes on edges, and round white spots in centre ; a pair of men's lace- up boots, with patent leather facings, recently soled, and has plates on heels ; a plaid Shirt, nearly new, with collar made on shirt of same material; also a quantity of Bread and Cheese. Supposed by a man about 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 iLches high, small dark side whiskers, large mouth ; supposed to be elressed in old cord trousers, old hard hat; left old pilot cloth jacket behind him, right sleeve torn from top to bottom. Information to Mr. Harrop, C. C., Shrewsbury.— Bow- s. reet, September 19. Stolen from the dwelling- house of John Morgan, Tre- goyd Common, by housebreaking, at mid- day on 13th inst.:— a silver lever Geneva Watch No. 44440 ; a steel Guard with Seal and Key attached ; Half- a- sovereign in go'd ; about 9s. in silver ; 8 or 10 Farthings acelone Half- farthing; one drabbet Jacket, pockets on hips; one single- breasted black cloth Waist- coat. By a tramp, about 45 years of ,' uje, 5 feet 9 or 10 iuches high, dark complexion, proportionate build ; dressed in along dark blue coat, old grey cloth or cord trousers, dark cloth cap with psak, turns up at sides and' button on top, may be wearing the stolen jacket and waistcoat. Had the appearance of a labourer at iron works or fireman on board of ship. On the night of 13th instant, the counting- house of Mr. T. Twaits Balls, at Burwell, was entered by forcing a small window, and the following Cheques, drawn on Messrs. Foster, Cambiidge, with 8s. in penny postage Stamps stolen from an iron safe therein :— one for £ 311 8s. 9d., crossed, payable to Foster and Brickett; one for £ 70, payable to A. R. Bagg ; one for £ 15 18s. 9d., payable to Anderson ( draft due 18th instant); one for £ 14 8s. 6d., payable to S. Murrell; one for £ 10 19s. 9d.. payable to Robert Dyson ; and one for £ 4 7s. 6d., payable to D. Mansfield. Information to Mr. Sup". Charles Long, Police Station, NEWMARKET.— Bow- street, September)- 17 Stolen by means of burglary fiom the dwelling- houfe of W. F. Hallett, Esq., Parkhouse, Hurstbourne Park, Whit- church,! between 9 p. m. 10th and 6 a. m. 11th instant:— two Table Knives and two Forks, white handles, knives marked on blade— a crown, ' Y. B.,' and ' Francis Townsend, cutler to Her Majesty,' forks marked ' Steel' on shanks; two pint earthenware Mugs, imitation hollyleaf and berry in blue out- side ; an ordinary stable Shovel; a garden Sjrade, marked in fpencil on eye'Loyton'; and a square Bass Broom, long handle. Entrance was made by breaking a pane of glass in the scullery window and uuhasping tbe catch. Information to Mr. Inspector Duke, Hants Constabulary, ANDOVER.— — Bow- street, September 14. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Description of JOHN SPARLING, charged on warrant with stealing a bay Horse Pony ( recovered) from a fie'd at Easingwold, during the night of 9th instant :— he is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark brown hair, beard and moustache about a month's growth which he may have shaved off, dark eyes and complexion, scar on forehead, and proportionate figure : a native of Tadcaster, has served in the army, and is of very diity appearance ; dressed in an old dark mixture coat, torn at right shoulder, small check vest, cord or fustian trousers, black hard felt hat, and old lace- up boots; a labourer, but occasionally gathers rags and bones he frequents the East,, West, and North Ridings, aud may be found in common lodging- houees or outbuildings Informa- tion to Mr. Supt. Wright, N. R. Constabulary, HF, WORTH, or to Inspector Archer, EASIXGWOLD, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, September 19. Stolen between 5 p. m. 11th and 6.30 a. m. 12th instant, from a field at Lordship- lane, Tottenham :— 2 Horses, one is a light bay van Mare, 7 years oil, 16J hands high, switch tail, set high on rump, cleau legs, long body, short legged and curies head almost level with rump ; the other a dapple grey Mare, aged, 14* hands, white mane and tail, rather broid across head between eyes, very large jaw bones, has been blistered for spivin behind, aud both without hind shoes. By 2 men : one is from 40 to 45 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, clean shaved, and dressed in pepper and salt mixture coat, c > rd trousers, and hard felt hat; tile other is 30 ytars of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, stout, heavy moustache, and wore black bowler hat and leggings ; both had the ap- pearance of horse dealers. Can be identified. Information to the Director of Criminal Investigations, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, SW.— Metropolitan Police, September 19. 13th instant (>- upposed to be stolen):— Light bay horse, aged, 13 hands high, chipped on both knees, runs a little lime on near hiod leg. white mark on back from saddle pinch, long tail, recently shod behind, and in good condi ion. The man who sold it. took a ticket by the 12 noon train for Kings Cross, London, from Blunham Railway Station, and is of tie following description :— about 30 years of age, dark com- plexion, whiskers, and moustache, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches higb, and diessed in grey coat and trousers, rough red aid striped waistcoat, light coloured handkerchief rouud neck, felt hat, and Hide- spring boots. Said his name was CHA3. SEDG- WICK ( supposed fictitious). Information to Mr. Supt. W. Bedlow, Police Station, BIGGLESWADE, Beds.—' Bow- street, September 19. Stolen during the night of 17th instant, from a field at Colemen's Farm, Theydon Mount :— a black nag Mare, aged, 15 hands high, two white stripes across the neck, acd one across the forehead, as if caused by a piece of string tied round at some time, hog tnane, short tail, and in fair con- dition, value £ 15. The thieves had a pony and cart with them. Information to Mr Supt. John Lennon, Constabulary Office, EFFING, Essex.— Bow- street, September 19. Stolen from the Plantation Farm at Littleport, IiJa of Ely, either on 11th or 12th instant :— a 3 year old bay Cart Colt. 15 hands high, with four white legs, and star in fore- head, is in good condition, and been worked. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Smith, ELY, Cambs.— Bow- street, September 17. Supposed stolen from Kents- lane, Silverdale:— a bay Horae, aged, about 16 hands high, sore on back caused by saddle, and bad on fore l; gs. Information to Mr. Supt. J. Hall, TUNSTALL, St^ ffoidshire.— Bow- street, September 17. Stolen daring the night of 13th instant, from a field in High Leigh :— a Horse, about 15£ or 16 hands high, rough mane caused by rubbing against trees, white mark on tor of back where saddle tits, small white spot on one of the hind legs near the hoof, about 10 years old, when the horse is trotting he keeps his mouth partly open, and if he has no bearing rein on he carries his head very low. Information to Mr. Supt Le'ghton, Constabulary Office, ALTRINCHAM.— Bow- street, September 17. The bay Mare, Cart, and Harness, reported stolen from Hempstead, Essex, on the lst instant, have all been recovered, and the thief, ALFRED DRANE, has been apprehended, and committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions to be held at Chelmsford. - Bow- street, September 17. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT! Description of ROBERT COOK, whose apprehension is sought for embezzling very large sums of maney : — 35 years of age, 6 feet high, fair complexion, large blue eyes ( olood shot), oval face, brown hair, whiskers aud moustache, shaved on chin, awkward gait when walking ; dressed respectably. An agent. Known in Birmingham Warrant issued. In- formation to the Director of Criminal Investigations, GREAT SCOTLAND YARD, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, September 19. Description of EMMA SMITH, and CHABLE3 RUS3EL, charged with stealing at Wirksworth, on 15th instant, about £ 60 in Notes and Gold, amongst which was one £ 20 Note : — EMMA SMITH, 27 years of age, light complexion, light sandy hair, straight nose, dimple on chin, 5 feet 3 inches high ; dressed in white straw hat, white feather, black cloth jacket, trimmed with figured silk, plum- coloured velvet dresp, muslin necktie, tied in bow, wore gold bevelled buckle ring on left hand third finger, and has been living at No. 2, Park- grove, City- road, Hulme, Manchester. OH A RLE 3 RUSSEL, 27 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark brown hair, long sandy frizzy moustache, brown eyes, ' oDg features ; dressed in daik brown suit, one breast and two side pockets iu ciat, black necktie, with horse- shoe pin, walks rather stooping; states he has served in Grenadier Guards, and talks of layiog under canvas in India, his mother is living in Brook- street, Charltori- on- Medlock, Manchester. Description of JAME3 YOUNG, charged on warrant with stealing an old cotton Bag, containing £ 5 19s. 6d. in Gold and Silver, from the trousers pocket of Wm. Hariison, at Fawdingtou Lodge, near Huly, during the ni^ htof 13th inst.: — he is about 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh complexion, full eyes ( supposed blue), long nose, dark brown hair, lightish moustache, no whiskers, proportionate make, and walks erec' ; supposed to have been in the army, a tramping bricklayer or mason, and supposed to be a native of Lancashire ; dressed in a plain shabby black cloth shooting coat, no vest, grey or brownish mixture trousers, repaired on the leg with cotton cord, torn at seat, grey woollen shirt, grey cloth cap with two peaks and ear flaps, and light lace- up boot?. Wanted on warrant, charged with embezzlement, EDWARD ELFORD, late Station Master at Nanp^ n : — he is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6, inches higb, slight build, sallow complexion, black hair, turning gr. y, black whisktrs and moustache, aul generally wears eye glasses ; supposed to be dieised in a suit of blue cloth cr grey clothes. He is ajuative of Bodmin, where he has relations residing ; he was seen in Plymouth on 11th instant, and t o doubt'will endeavour to g « abroad. Information to Mr. Wm, Thomas Ma ton, Supt., G. W. Absconded on 24th ultimo, charged by warrant with embezzlement : — ARTHUR HON BURY GODFREY, a clerk in parcel office, 25 yens of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, dark bair, incliuecl to curl, and b mhed book to meet behind,, lad little side wli kers, no mou t^ cae, hangs his head a little on one side when walking ; generally dressed in dark clothes, with a Laid felt hat which he wears at the back of his head He has been at sea as a stewaul has had a superior education. £ 20 reward will be paid by the Cheshire Lines Committee to any ptro i that will give such ir formation as will lead to his app ehension.
